They ask, "Wouldn't the player database be separate from the rest of the code that's updated in a patch? If so, why would rolling back the patch affect anyone's progress?"
Well, I haven't seen anyone else bring this up yet, but I think I have a reasonable hypothesis for why this might be the case: Season 8 is coming very soon. This patch was pretty big, IIRC, and it might have had some of the updated architecture they'll be using in Season 8. That being the case, it is entirely possible that the player database had some significant changes in the last patch (e.g. placeholders for or hidden versions of new reputation tracks, etc., that won't be visible until Season 8 actually launches), and now a simple rollback isn't really a viable option without nullifying a lot of play time for everyone else.
If there are hidden placeholders or hidden new reputation tracks, do you know of anyone working hard to make progress on that Season 8 hidden reputation content right now?
Without knowing what is in Season 8, how can they work hard on hidden Season 8 content to be able to lose it? If it is hidden, how can they be angry for losing something that is hidden of which they know nothing about lol.
Like people here have been saying, there doesn't need to be a rollback of everything. They can re-release the previous patch which people didn't have any problem with and then take their time to find the problem without affecting anyone.
I think what bothers people is that up until Oct 2 the program was running fine and there was no problem with their computer hardware running it. Then suddenly Oct 3 there is a problem with their computer, that it is their video card, they are running conflicting programs, they didn't update their video drivers, they didn't run in safe mode, didn't run in administrator mode, etc, etc. That's a very big coincidence that a lot of people suddenly have computer problems exactly on that day.
If they push on through Season 8 without finding the problem now, it could be too late by then. The people having this problem will fall through the cracks into oblivion.

My point wasn't that people are working on hidden reputation tracks (or whatever) for Season 8 -- it's that the database itself might have had some substantial structural changes that make it no longer compatible with the previous patch. If that were the case, they wouldn't be able to roll back to the previous patch without also rolling back to the pre-patch backup of the database, thereby forcing everyone else to lose their progress they've made since 10/3.
It's just a hypothesis, but given the timing of how close we are to Season 8, it seems plausible: This is usually the time we start getting larger patches that "pre-load" some of the stuff that won't go live until the new season launches. (I could be wrong, but this patch certainly seemed larger than average to me.)
yep i think ur right they are uploading stuff for season 8 "The Sphere" as we are a few weeks away from being released. Last year Season 7 was released sometime in November I believe.
And yes if Season 8 is release before a fix we will fall through the cracks and might even be too late. This raises another point this problem might even give them a look at to what problems we might run into at Season 8

Alright that makes sense.
With the full steam ahead and not going back, some of us can have first hand experience with how it feels like to be on the receiving end of the Vulcan saying: the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

at least he told us... "Ya, we're not able to fix this, but we're going to do some server maintenance... that won't fix your problem, but hopefully fix the lag".
Hi Captains. I wanted to give you a heads up that we're still working on a resolution. Unfortunately, we most likely will not have one in time for our account server maintenance tomorrow (info), so we wouldn't be able to resolve it during this downtime. If this changes, I will let you know, but I at least wanted to keep you in the loop.
Cheers,

Essentially no progress has been made. It's day 5 and ya'll haven't a damn bit of progress. You'll keep releasing new stuff and forget about the minority. Essentially another "TRIBBLE you" right there. They keep proving they don't give a damn! All they care about is lining their pockets with "stolen" money.
Well I just tried again and it looks like the splash screen goes through and it was getting ready to start loading the Character screen mode when it crashes - so I seem to be slowly getting there

Which reminds me, there's a folder in Cryptic Studios/Star Trek Online/Live called 'prepatch' with a sub-folder called 'piggs'... it all appears to be stuff from the LoR pre-patch back in May... (Dates ranging from 5/2 to 5/20/13)
The catch is, there's a 'piggs' in "Live", too, filled with what looks to be newer versions of some of the same files (dated 10/3/13, interestingly enough)... could this somehow be related to the situation?
The reason I'm curious is the Live/piggs has files like bins2.hogg, bins3.hogg, character.hogg and object.hogg that have 'Last Modified' dates of 11/24/12, roughly Season Seven release, but Live/prepatch/piggs has those same files with 'Last Modified' dates of 5/2/13.
In other words, some of the files in Live/piggs are obviously the newest versions, but others are a year old and there are newer versions in Live/prepatch/piggs. Maybe something's somehow in the wrong place?
(Sorry, had Live/prepatch/piggs with 'LM' dates of 10/3, it should've been 5/2 - either way, still newer than 11/24/12...)

^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...

hehehehehe so it might be a pig (piggs) that is TRIBBLE with use sorry had to find humor after what our 6th straight day now
Every last one of you who is too busy complaining about Cryptic's 'lack of customer service' are really in need of a reality check and cooldown of your own. Seriously, they update this topic so people can find their latest responses.
Am I upset as I am affected? Yes. But I am not going to take it on out the people at Cryptic. How many of you are programmers? ANY form of Computer Programming is subject to Murphy's Law. It is also subject to looking good on paper but sucking in practice. Besides, if they tested this on Tribble...keep in mind that has a lower load then the main Holodeck server. Maybe it was something in the Main Server that caused the Patch to go awry?
I'm kind of dissapointed in kyledewitt. Its already in the afternoon and he has only had a couple of rants so far. There goes my enterainment while waiting for the patch from hell getting fixed.
I imagine kyledewitt mashing his button that yells out "KAHN" in Kirks voice.

Woah, hold it guys; this is getting dangerously close to harassment and trolling here. Why don't we just back off and ignore him? Just... ignore him.

Very well. I sincerely apologize to any and all members of this forum who may have been offended by my previous postings. My intent was to lighten the visceral mood that was prevailing in the forum not to harass any member. Again, I am sorry.
One day believe me you'll be sorry,
You're gonna feel this pain,
One day you'll see me and remember,
The promises you made,
Just wait and see how you'll be sorry,
One day your sky's gonna rain,
I've been having the same issue with it crashing after this last update they did... the only way it doesn't crash for me is if i let it go right to the character selection screen first before going full screen.
Good news! We're testing a potential fix for this issue internally, and once we're confident that it will be safe for a test server, we will push it there. If all checks out, the goal is to get this in the next Holodeck patch, so hopefully for Thursday.
I can't thank you enough for your continued patience, and I appreciate those of you in this thread that have been supportive of our efforts to resolve this. As mentioned, it is our top priority and we can't wait to see you back in-game.

since Redshirt is like tribble and u patch that when ever does that mean that we might have access to redshirt before we have access to Holodeck???
For those of you having trouble accessing Holodeck, you may want to check to see if you can get into Redshirt now, and if you can't, then see if you can after the patch that includes the potential fix. That would be a great help
