Here's something that may or may not have occurred to Cryptic: the Galaxy-X as described would majorly hurt PvP and drive casual gamers away. Leaving the "BFG" on the front would have a lot of the casuals refusing to go into space PvP to avoid coming up against that thing. It'd be like throwing a Scimitar into the mix.
Hey, if people have that much money to spend, thats their prerogative and not really any of yours or anyone else's business. Its no different than the people who bought every version of the game to get each different promo item from the different retailers. That said, I dont think this particular item should be tied to this particular promotion, but should be availible through the C-store.
Exactly. A canon ship shouldn't be turned into a promotional item.
Exactly. A canon ship shouldn't be turned into a promotional item.
I think that's the problem, and in a roundabout sorta way, the solution.
Basically, it seems that the general concensus is that canon items/ships/races/etc. shouldn't be limited to people who are fortunate enough to be able to meet the criteria for a certain promotion. That's fair enough - one of the main attractions of this game is the freedom to experience all the fan-favourite elements of 40+ years of Trek in as 'hands-on' a way as possible. Excluding Trek fans from certain elements (the AGT Galaxy, the Holographic BOff) unless they meet what could be insurmountable conditions is only going to work against that, and it stops people from doing the thing that makes this game so fun - getting deep into the various nooks and crannies of the Trek sandpit.
On the other hand, I can understand that people who CAN achieve the criteria for the promotions (which are still tough) want something to make it worth their while, and not something that'll just get shoved into the C-Store later, thus undermining their hard work.
There's not been this sort of problem over things like the Holographic/Borg tribbles, or the Lifers' commbadge - IMO, that's because they're not things taken directly from canon. I'm wondering what the reaction would be if Cryptic put out an original design, such as the Nomad or Imperial (complete with the upgraded in-game stats and bonus powers that the AGT Galaxy will apparently have) as the referral reward - I'd hazard a guess that there wouldn't be half the upset that there's been over this issue.
So that's my (tentative) compromise - original content only for promotional rewards. That way, players who put in the time and effort get something decent to show for it, yet casual Trek fans don't feel that aspects of canon are rendered 'out of bounds' to all but a lucky few.
I reckon that'd suit most folk - what do y'all think?

I'd still be fourm-*****ing until my fingers bleed over the powers. Then again, I wouldn't care in the first place if they offered just the Galaxy-X skin and no special powers, so w/e.

This whole deal rubs me the wrong way.
As a person who actively recruited his friends into this game when I saw its potential, its just a raw deal. Where is the gratitude to the players who brought others in at the outset, when stuff was really rough by comparison?
It really stinks that I recruited back at the outset, and brought in the people I know that would want in this game. Then they bring out the refer a friend promotions, its just a real kick in the teeth. To grant special items to people who are now doing what I already did.
I love STO, great game IMO, the reviewers are just a different mold of gamer than me i guess. The people I have brought in (one of whom is a fellow lifer now) also enjoy the game. Just wish the early adopters were not being shuffled to the back of the bus (Oh we already have your friends... too bad no unique items for you, but hey we have new content coming so have your cookie and be happy).

Hey, I feel for you man, I really do. I'm really not sure what any of that has to do with my post that you quoted though
No, it shouldn't remain exclusive, it should be purchasable at a shipyard with any other T5 ship. Save Cryptics non canon ubercruisers for referral rewards and whatnot.
lets have it fire when cloaked and get 10 bridge packs and travel to the past to just end the klingon once and for all and then all you feds can go and fight the NPC klingon then maybe you could threaten the empire. Or maybe some how all you GOOD fed player will understand how important it is to have good opponents in battle.
I would like to point out that lots of games do this type of reward program, while using a vvery popular ship is not the best idea, it still will make people go out there and get friends to play, is it really bad that you can't get it unless it in game, would be be any different of the rest of T5 ship. No, then why all of this whining?
At this point they would be in for too much grief not to feature this ship as an exclusive as many of us have already put our devious plans of acquisition in motion.
exactly there would be backlash from those that put forth effort to get what we want if half the people that sat here and whined about it put half that effort into getting the ship they might have the 5 they need by now

Considering the Galaxy-X is from an alternate future timeline, created by Q? I'm not so sure having one here, now, in this timeline, isnt already flagging it as a "non canon ubercruiser"

*shrug* If it was just a skin, I'd be right there with you.
But it's not. It's mechanics. That shouldn't even be in the C-Store, let alone walled off behind $225 worth of payment that you can try shilling off to someone else.

By that argument, you must be livid about the TR-116 pre-order reward... Which does in fact do a good job of dominating low-tier ground PvP.

I was uncomfortable about it, and it's my fault for not protesting more vocally and believing that they'd just stick to stuff with 'minor effects' 'early in the game'.
edit: And I feel foolish for vocally supporting the C-Store on the basis that "anything sold in the C-Store that affects gameplay will be available in-game", with the C-Store species that have unique mechanical traits.

I cant argue that. At least this is T5...
The one thing that eases my concerns about the X's actual abilities is the fact that they have made it clear this is not going to be the only "special" top-tier ship in the game, and represents only the first one we'll see. I'll have to dig a bit for where, but I distinctly recall there being mention that other ships with similar advantages and uniqueness will become available as in-game achievement rewards (or something).
So while the Galaxy-X may be limited to Referrals, I'm expecting to soon after see other ships with other unique abilities based on popular examples - Defiant cloaking, Prometheus multi-vector, Pegasus interphase cloaking, Chang's prototype BoP firing while cloaked... Who knows!
I, personally, get tired of all of the <whining, whinging, QQing, complaining, insert your word of choice> about exclusive items.
For cryin out loud, if you want the ship bad enough go recruit some some people, geez.
I think stuff should remain exclusive. Trashcan all the 'fair' talk.
People complain because of perk rewards...
People complain because their copy of STO didn't have X... or enough of Y...
People complain because Mirror Universe uniforms were only available to CO lifers...
"Let Cryptic demonstrate their customer service skills by listening to our demands."
Theres no telling what steps Riker had to do to get that ship.
We know Sisko had to jump some hoops just for a name change.
That ship was singularly unique. Let it stay exclusive.
how about this quote: "If everyone's special, then nobody is special."
Seriously, enough with all this.
I enjoy seeing a handful of Mirror uniforms or the occasional Pakled/Ferengi/whatever...
Just for the record, I dont have alot of these exclusives... the ones I have, that I wanted, I went out and got.
I voted No, that it should be available as another means.
If it means it gets special powers and cloak...I don't think it should be offered at all.
I know it's been said elsewhere before, but allowing a special ship/equipment or pwers that will have an effect on gameplay in a real and mechanical sense would be bad for the C-Store.
With that said I dont think it should be for RAF either ... another way to say no to it at all if it is going to be more than a skin for a ship.
You COULD however offer it as a new T5 ship with perhaps....and its a weak perhaps, extra slots or more energy output, but not necessarily allowing to have equipment that is not also available (ie special weapons, cloak consoles etc etc) to other ships.
Havent really fleshed out the whole idea but you get the picture

Yes, vague promises about future ships. Meanwhile rich kids will be tooling around in Galaxy X's breaking balance with their cloaks for who knows how long?
So while the Galaxy-X may be limited to Referrals, I'm expecting to soon after see other ships with other unique abilities based on popular examples - Defiant cloaking,
Yeah I wonder what they'll ask for that one?
Get your friends to sign up to a lifetime sub maybe?
Prometheus multi-vector,
I'd like to see the game engine handle that one! It would probably break down and cry.
Pegasus interphase cloaking,
There's no collision detection in the game, so this would be a pointless.
Chang's prototype BoP firing while cloaked... Who knows!
why do we have to be rich kiddies im not rich by any means i work hard for my money and this is what i choose to spend my money on if you don't want to spend your money then don't
why do we have to be rich kiddies im not rich by any means i work hard for my money and this is what i choose to spend my money on if you don't want to spend your money then don't
IF you can spend $75 for a single ship in a videogame, you're richer than I or not very responsible with money.
where'd you get $75? if you wanted it bad enough, assuming it works, you'd have to spend more like $225 to get it yourself....operationg under the assumption you can't convince/have no friends interested in STO to sign up.
again assuming you can start accounts yourself and have them count towards recruitment
and rich is a relative term.....someone having a few hundred dollars they decide the can throw at a game does NOT a rich man make. And responsiblility with money has nothing to do with spending money on a game, unless that money should have gone towards bills......if you have extra cash floating around responsibility has nothing to do with it.
If i have more money than you im rich? $75 dollars isn't alot of money these days. Check my sig I bought several copies of the game to get the various exclusives, I bought lifetime and times that by 2 I have 2 accounts. So far I have prolly $1,000 into this game and still like it yes to some that may seem like alot but I guarantee there are people that have spent more than me on this and other mmos I had a friend in swg had 5 grand wrapped up just in cards from the tcg people spend money on what's important to them if this isn't that important to you that's ok but don't put down people that can afford to buy things
I've spent about that much as well, and that was me getting all the pre-order bonuses to boot. I had to work long and hard to be able to afford it too, but I felt it was worth it for this Star Trek MMO.
Exactly star trek mmo and being on ground floor its worth the money to me no matter what the shiny is i have heard if it was any other ship than this one or its iconic star trek evrything that was in star trek that was exclusive to star trek is iconic no matter what the shiny is some will get it some won't those that dont will whine and complain not fair etc. trying to get what the rest of us either paid for or worked for

second it sounds like this isn't just limited to do it this week or you miss it you have time

fourth why do so many people feel they are entitled to everything in game
