saying "it's not done yet" or "the design isn't final" or any other excuse is all just BS. if something isn't done, or doesn't look good...don't release it yet. but if you DO decide to pump out TRIBBLE just to meet a deadline, then you deserve every bit of hate you get for how it looks. the "first impression" of this show will always been "that ship is ugly". and thats their fault for giving people a low quality presentation.

So nice to see instances of open-mindedness still happening in the STO forums...

Might we actually start having the "hate & rage' being focused on something besides JJ-Trek for the foreseeable future...

The ship just looks bad. Yes it could grow on me but the ship looks like two different ships designed by two different species welded together because the originals were broken and the crews needed to work together to get home.

Basically it looks like a bad kitbash.

I still say its TMP era. The registry fits the timeframe, there are several design elements which match other ship design elements from that era... but IM, the biggest clue is the glowing blue deflector. Prior to TMP you had physical dishes... by the time of TSFS the glow had concentric circles of purple, blue, and white with a distinct golden spot in the center.

The windows on the saucer match the "Type 1" horizontal rectangles. The number of windows suggest a smallish ship--but not Defiant escort small, perhaps 5 decks in the saucer and 10 decks total... by the time of TUC, most ships were noticeably larger. The Constitution-refit being quite average in size.

You can also see the blue stripe down the nacelles and the red buzzard collectors, both items that 1701-A lack most 2280s vessels support... indicating, at least to me, that DSC fits somewhere between TMP and TWOK.

The odd shape of the secondary hull tell me that Discovery is a multi-mission ship--probably a frigate of some kind... not quite as Jack-of-all-trades as the larger cruisers, yet less specialized than a single-hull science ship. Capable of being self-sustaining. Its definitely not a support vessel that's part of a larger task force, but not nearly as prominent as a ship-of-the-line.

what is your malfunction? no, "everyone" is not going to change their mind. there is nothing wrong with not liking something.

True. But some posters pretty much don't like everything about Star Trek. And continually post about how they hate x, y AND z.

Not sure why they bother with Trek anymore. The stuff they like is available on Netflix. And the entire franchise is moving onward from all that (both in the new films that they so aggressively hate as well as now the new television show that they seem to just as aggressively hate). There's no real need to participate in the fandom or the community at this point since their tastes are frozen in amber.

I haven't seen anyone say they hate the show, I've seen a lot of relief that it's Prime universe. The only hate I've seen has been directed at that abomination they call a starship. I've only ever seen one fed ship that was uglier than that thing, the dyson destroyer.

I've seen hatred directed at every rumor about this show since go. Including now the CGI teaser released showing this ship.

That's a ton of hatred for something that is going to be the new Trek series that the same people claim they are diehard fans of. It's like I said, their tastes are trapped in amber and now that the internet is here, the hatred is going to be on full display in a way that no other Trek series has ever had to experience.

The fans' ability to hate everything new and different about this show may cause a lot more damage than they realize, but hey, there's still the reruns on netflix! REAL TREK FOR REAL FANS OF THE TRUE STAR TREK!

Won't be long until we see a thread discussing how they hate Fuller Trek and how its not Canon and its an abomination.

Of course it's going to get a lot of hate it's the "new Trek thing" and that means everyone in the "everything new is terrible" fanbase must hate it for being new. They will nitpick every single flaw the new series has and use those nitpicks to justify their hatred even though every series and movie is guilty of the same mistakes from bad writing and plotholes to terrible science.

Someone will find every single instance of the new series which contradicts a rule or story point from a previous series and say it makes a mockery of everything that came before it, despite the fact that once again every series ToS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT contradicted every previous series, even TOS contradicted itself on what rules it wanted to follow from episode to episode and from season to season.

that is absolute BS. i have seen plenty of people who love everything they have heard about this new show EXCEPT this ship design. look, i know "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but it seems most people dont really like this design. some designs just aren't good, and that doesn't mean the people who feel that way just "hate everything that is new". some designs are just BAD.

JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Willing to give the CG a pass since as it's said it's just to get something out....but you'd have thought that if they actually cared it probably would have seen more polish/etc before showing anything. I'm not a fan of design itself so I do hope they tweak it a bit.

Still interested to see where they'll go with the show, hoping it's good regardless of the ship's look since while it's important, it's the people and stories that really matter.

NX-01 had a blue glowie for a deflector too, as I recall...

That was because linguistics was all we had to talk about in order to keep the thread afloat. Now we know something about the show - which, of course, means that some folks are going to hate what we know now, in accordance with Anderson's Law, and are going to assume we all secretly agree with them so they have to keep blasting their hatred loudly for us.

Me, I think the ship looks like a fairly primitive take on what would one day be - think of it as a Constitution-class as designed by Red Green. Instead of finesse, it employs brute force to make itself work. Rugged, rather than graceful, you know?

I like it, mostly. I don't much care for the finish, it looks oily. Odd to talk about hope and optimism and a guiding light and then make the ship such a sinister colour, it looks like it belongs in DS9 among the moody lighting; and I can't think of a reason for it, given that both ENT and TOS-era ships were using the mainly-white paint jobs if I remember rightly. I prefer the last picture (from the original old concept?) where it doesn't have that. But I like the rest of the design.

That great wide rear section made it look to me as if it's designed for founding new colonies or carrying cargoes, like there's the saucer section with the Starfleet crew in it and then some huge payload being towed behind? Don't know if that's the intention, though.

It's unfortunate that the saucer looks exactly like a giant hubcap, though, they'll have to do something about that before they send it out or everyone will be joking about it :D

@jonsills NX-01 had several, vertical white-blue lights behind a physical, oblong shaped deflector dish, but the deflector itself was not the glowing blue of Discovery and 1701-A.

Since the release of the first trailer. From what we have seen is it possible that the rumours, or at least one of the, may be true and that it was mentioned before not to be true just a lie and to increase excitement?

I agree. Not every bit of criticism, as early as it is, can be dismissed as being "fanboy hate". The ship design does look very rough, not helped by the rather low quality CGI used. We don't know anything else and hating on speculations and rumours is of course a bit far fetched. But right now I do think they need a pretty good explanation for this ship, especially the colours pig-2.gif

Well, what I've seen of the ship so far looks pretty bad... and I'm less than optimistic about the possibility of another prequel after the way ENT played out. (On that note, having started rewatching that series, most of the first season seems pretty decent - even the oft-hated 'Dear Doctor' is manageable once you shut out the more stupid parts.)

Still, we're going home. That's a start.

Poor CGI I can forgive it is is so early on. I'm suprised they'd release poor CGI though. I hope they "hone" the design a lot. Like, into a different one. Though most new ships I've hated at first and they've grown on me so perhaps I should reserve judgement this time until I've seen a lot more of it.
When Trekmovie.com asked Kadin if the teaser for Star Trek: Discovery featured the final design of the ship, music, and logo, she laughed and said “NO! I was surprised Bryan didn’t say that, actually. I mean, we had three weeks to throw that together. We wanted to show fans…we’re super-excited by the score that this amazing composer, Fil Eisner, threw together as an audition and he did an incredible job. The concepts of the ship are totally what we’re going for and they’ll be honed up until, I think, the day we deliver.”

Interesting. NOt what I would consider an attractive ship, but it could have its very own, unique character.

Reminds me of a pizza cutter and I do not like the design. I can see if they are trying a different route, but the Klingons and Federation was very heated up to STVI. I would have to say that this might happen after STVI and why I am interested in seeing this, the ship may cause me not want too.... I just hope this was an idea and not a final video they showed.

I'm not. It was released at comic con. Just last week at the big Star Wars thing in Europe I was watching a youtube interview with the director, artist and voice actress for Ahsoka Tano and they had all of this pre-production work, sketches, and even a fully non finished scene with Ahsoka that was fun to watch but was completely base polygons.

Same thing here, they're showing an in production bit to a group of fans. It's a sneak peek. It's cool that they show us this.

I thought the Nautilus was the pizza cutter design? How can this be one too?
