I've been waiting since I was beta testing for a romulan faction. so thank you. it's also made a bold statement about the game and it's future. adding the much wanted and needed romulans, put an end to them dishonourable kdf cry babies and much much more in a huge update. i'm very impressed with what is coming in may. I actually can't believe that there is still some negativity out there about something that is 100% good for the game. I seriously take my hat off to your hard work and I hope it all pays off!!
So... I really want to know who those new aliens from the Beta Quadrant are!
Speculations, guys?
My guess is the Dewans are back.
From the STO wiki on New Romulus:
The Dewan Civilization
With the Iconians gone, the surviving Dewans formed their own civilization.
Thousands of years later, as the Dewans were preparing to launch their first starships, an abandoned Iconian Gateway was found in a subterranean cavern. Tempted by the possibility of instantaneous travel, the space program was abandoned and all resources were thrown toward making the Gateway operational again.
When the Gateway was ready, it was connected to geothermal power taps to provide the necessary energy. The Dewans failed to realize the bombardment millenia ago had made this dangerous.
When the Dewans activated the Gateway, it triggered massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that wiped out most of the population and bathed the planet in a killing cloud of radiation.
The surviving Dewans retreated to caves to escape the radiation and the nuclear winter, but ultimately their resources ran out and they died off.
Speculation: They did manage to launch some ships and the information was wrong. Now they are back.
Another possibility: The HurQ.
These ancient Klingon enemies vanished, and are now believed behind the return of the Fehkliri.
The KDF are supposed to be getting content along with the Romulans- could the returning Hur'Q be a common threat that they face?

I think at least from the Klingon side of it all, Some people just aren't ready to believe cryptic will actually come through. There has been three years of unkept promises and various excuses. With that kind of environment, It is not surprising that some people aren't going to believe cryptic will deliver, until they actually do.
Otherwise, I think there are just some people out there who will never be happy unless they can find something to be unhappy about. :P
So... I really want to know who those new aliens from the Beta Quadrant are!
Speculations, guys?
Well, one my understanding is they are necessarily from the Beta Quadrant, but they are terrorizing the Beta Quadrant. Basically it sounds like they are a predominantly Romulan Enemy Faction. At least that is what I took away.
As for who. My guess from the screens is they are an original concept created by Cryptic and thus a previously unseen enemy.
Now, you're gonna make massive UI changes, trait changes, add content for the KDF and add an entirely new faction. I pray to god this is on tribble Fri or by next Fri otherwise it'll be an utter disaster trying to get it live by May 21st...
Well with changes to the UI, I hope thats not just color. The chatbox would be nice if it could flip and hide t the side.. or be part of the side somehow.. and maybe add avatars of the character on the chat channel?
Well it's been a big wait for a expansion... It looks really good I hope we have a lot of content to play with. I'm not just excited about the Romulans being playable it is also the Klingon 0 - 50. I hope it is delivered properly.. The game has come a long way since launch.

The Feddie cry babies (they are not all the Fed players just a minority, but a majority on the forums here) who want everything for their faction has damaged this game more than KDF players who just want fairness and equality. Faction uniqueness has gone the way of the dinosaur since cross faction consoles etc became standard in the lotto boxes.
Just pointing a finer it's always good to first look in the mirror and get off the pedestal you've set for yourself.
Support the Game by Supporting the KDF, equality and uniqueness for all factions!

Most of the KDF whiners whine about "more stuff only for us now!" while the Fed whiners whine "Give cruisers and science ships 20 thousand dps per second beams, we cant have escorts deal more damage then us!"
Both are very annoying.
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.

I just added this wallpaper to my Kubuntu 12.10 (linux) desktop. It looks just as cool as it does on my Windows desktop. Now if I can just remember how I got STO to work under the previous Kubuntu version. I had to do a fresh install of Kubutu 12.10 as I messed up my upgrade. I forgot to uninstall a unsuported graphics driver before I upgraded and that caused multipile problems. The ubuntu Intel driver they have won't work right with my Intel GMA 45 Express GPU. STO is a big black window without that!
Empress Sela, was assimulated by the Borg drone named Tasa Yar!
1) Is this going to be worked in as a patch?
-no/ Is this a separate program?
--no/ Will it change my existing characters?
---yes/ Do I have to restart my characters?
--yes/ Will it be compatible with the current STO?
---no/ So we have to start all the way over?
---yes/ So its an expansion that works with the existing base?
-yes/ Can I expect major changes in the operation of the game?
--yes/ What kind of changes are we looking at here?
If someone could answer this string I will be very happy!
It should be no different then any other season. They are only calling it an expansion because it is much bigger then any season they released so far and so they dont want people to expect the same amount of content calling it season 8 so they call it an expansion instead.
Gene Roddenberry says the TAS is not canon, when he dies, CBS says it is.
I'm more inclined to follow Gene's line then CBS, since his is the last word on the matter
You know Gene has said (possibly) things are non-canon that we as fans consider canon?
It is reported (but not officially confirmed) that Gene Roddenberry said before his death that he considered Star Trek V and VI non-canon. If this was a true statement would you be saying they're not as well?
That is just a rumour, it was never official confirmed though. Just ebcause Gene said something was non-canon doesn't mean it isn't non-canon.
He died before the later half of TNG and all the way through Enterprise, wouldn't that technically make them non-canon because he wasn't alive to say so or not?
The general opinion is that there will be One Free Slot added to all accounts when this hits...
In order to accommodate the F2P folks...
Silver accounts already get two free slots... One for Fed and One for KDF...
It certainly logical that Cryptic will add a Free Romulan slot as well.
There is nothing confirmed yet as to when the BOff alterations will be added to the game.
It doesn't not seem likely this will happen with the Romulan Expansion.

Which is why I stick to the "if it didn't happen onscreen, it didn't happen" rule.
People can say all sorts of speculation and mistatements, but at the end of the day, tv show rules all.
And really, citing the Caitians are true canon because they got like 30 second appearances in this movie or that movie is a pretty weak argument.
By that logic, we should be playing as humpback whales and have humpback whale boffs/doffs, because they got a whole movie based around them!
Which is way more then the Caitians have ever had.
My system rates canon species by time onscreen/depth of story/length of story.
Caitians rank extremely poorly in the first category and have no rating for the next two categories.
Bees like honey, they don't like vinegar.
Everytime someone makes a character that is an copy of an existing superhuman, Creativity is sad

Buddy I hate to tell you this, but you can't have a "system" for canon. WHY are people not applying facts to the definition of canon?
You are NOT entitled to your own rules. For your own role playing purposes sure, but you are NOt allowed to dictate canon. Canon has legal terms.
The catholic church has canon lawyers for fighting arguments in interpretations of canon "law" for a reason.
Caitians ARE canon, Gene died and the IP RIGHTS went to CBS, whatever CBS says is canon IS CANON, there is no "opinion" there is no "my system for canon", it is an absolute FACT of legal law what is and is not canon by the IP rights holders.
Gene died, his rule went to someone else to decide canon. And even IF he did say the TAS was not canon? It is "overridden" by what CBS says NOW and nothing you say can change this as FACT.
So "your argument is pretty weak" statements are actually "weak", because there is no argument. Caitians are canon. Get over it.
Star Trek canon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Star Trek canon is the set of all canonical material in the Star Trek universe. It is usually defined as comprising the television series Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, and the motion pictures in the franchise.[1]
Another thing that makes canon a little confusing. Gene R. himself had a habit of decanonizing things. He didn't like the way the animated series turned out, so he proclaimed that it was not canon. He also didn't like a lot of the movies. So he didn't much consider them canon either. And ? okay, I'm really going to scare you with this one ? after he got TNG going, he... well... he sort of decided that some of The Original Series wasn't canon either. I had a discussion with him once, where I cited a couple things that were very clearly canon in The Original Series, and he told me he didn't think that way anymore, and that he now thought of TNG as canon wherever there was conflict between the two. He admitted it was revisionist thinking, but so be it.[4]? Paula Block, 2005
Sooo if you are using Gene's retraction of TAS as canon, you have to also exclude TOS from canon. Wait what? I didn't think so.
Did you know Gene decided Wrath of Khan wasn't canon also?
Films
As of 2011, all Star Trek films produced are considered canon.[1] However, much like for TV series, this policy fails to note which version of the films is canon. This leaves unknown the canonicity of scenes missing from the theatrical version of a film but included in home releases or director's cuts. Such is the case, for example, of a scene revealing that the character of Peter Preston was the nephew of Scotty in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.[12]
Adding confusion to the issue is the fact that Roddenberry is quoted as saying he did not like the films, and "didn't much consider them canon".[4] There exists no definitive list of which films in particular Roddenberry disliked, or what elements in them he did not consider canon. For example, the reference book Star Trek Chronology states that Roddenberry considered elements of Star Trek V and Star Trek VI to be apocryphal, but it does not specify which particular elements in the films Roddenberry objected to.[13]
The canonicity of extra features found on home DVD releases, such as deleted scenes, has never been explicitly addressed.
I am super excited for this expansions. Romulans are my favourite face (maybe tied with cardassians) but I love their ships. I've wanted a D'deridex since day 1.
The rest of it sounds interesting. The new UI looks great, that new enemy race seems really interesting It will be great to have Denise Crosby back, and I'm hoping there is plenty of missions/events/adventure zones for all 3 factions to play.
On top of that Im sure the Romulans will be opened up for foundry missions, so i look forward to creating something there.
Buddy I hate to tell you this, but you can't have a "system" for canon. WHY are people not applying facts to the definition of canon?
You want hard facts?
Fine, here is one:
Outside of TAS, there has not been one single episode or movie dedicated to the Caitians.
If they were truly canon, they would have been mentioned somewhere, anywhere in the tv series.
The fact that they are more or less ignored by every single writer in Star Trek says it all.
They're no more then a guest cameo appearance in the live movies and that's all they will ever be.
I'm assuming this is because of financial restraints, to make a Cat costume is expensive and not within the budget of a tv series.
Also, the physical complexity and overtime involved in preparing/applying a costume of that level increases the cost even further.
In any case, as relating to the Romulans, I'm don't think Cryptic should fabricate yet another non-canon animal species.
If you feel the need to add another playable race for this faction, I would suggest Flaxians
They have had dealings with the Tal-Shiar and it is hinted at that Flaxians are used for assassination or espionage purposes when the presence of a Romulan would be too noticable.
Given that they freely travel through Romulan space, it is likely that they are a subject race of the Romulan Star Empire.
Bees like honey, they don't like vinegar.
Everytime someone makes a character that is an copy of an existing superhuman, Creativity is sad
Well, ignoring everything that's been said so far...
The May update will be my absolute deadline for this game; to see if any attempts will have been made toward balancing this game, or whether I should quit in disgust instead.

Larry Nivens had a script outline for season 5 of Enterprise with Caitians and Kzinti that never made it due to the series cancellation.
Yeah, I know that doesn't count, but you are right in that makeup was a factor. But the Caitians are in Into darkness, Kirk sleeps with two females, they WILL be on screen again.
They don't have to be "named" on screen to as Caitians to be canon. Anyways, they are in STO and the only canon I care about is the game canon, since it's why I am in this forum.
