thanks for all the info about the UseGLSL being enabled fixing the crash.

Going to try to add in an option in WineskinSettings.app so people can easily click to have it done for them if it crashes.... when I can get to it.

Also think I'm gonna just put the full blown WineskinSettings.app in there, at least until we have more bugs worked out, so people have all the tools they may need.

Also, wanted to acknowledge NetSlut for suggesting we donate to your Wineskin project to show our support (for example $10USD). Due to some fat fingering on my part, I accidentally posted two donation messages. I'm happy to make good on both of them. Let me know if you don't get my $20.

Yes, the donation did sow up just fine through Paypal, I really appreciate it. Its a hobby and enjoyment for me to make WIneskin, but donations definitely help.

I have some plans on Wineskin I haven't really put up on the page...

I'm planning on trying to make Wineskin a more full featured program, and not just a wrapper to make ports with.

What I want to do is make a Wineskin.app that works much like Crossover, but more simple. Have a nice interface and keep it simplistic. Have multiple Wineskin Engines (Wine and Xquartz versions) able to download and install through the program. Anyone who installs a program and gets it working in WIneskin for their own use, can easily take the .app it makes and share it with others, and as long as they have Wineskin installed, it'll run. If they don't have the right engine installed, it'll prompt about it, and allow a download.... and have an easy to click option that will convert any of the apps made into a fully self contained package that can be shared and ran (like this STO one) without the main Wineskin package needing to be installed.

so in the end I want it to be a lot more like crossover, but simpler to use, multiple Wine versions available (not stuck with just 1, since 1 cannot run everything), and app wrappers that are easy to share with others, wether needing Wineskin installed to use them or not. And I'll still build custom Wine versions for it for certain programs, like the STO one in this.

I kinda use games like STO that i want to play as test beds to work on things and figure out more what is needed... and its all a learning experience (and fun).

All of this will take a lot of work from where I currently am, but I have all the main hard parts figured out and started :-)

Hopefully someday you can use it for many games you play, since gaming is my main focus, though it can run non-Gaming software as well.

What I wonder about now though is if this error I had, and others here too, is related to the nVidia GeForce 8xxx series. We all seem to use different kinds of Macs, but it looks like the nVidia cards are a common factor.

My Mac Pro is a 2,1 model with twin 3.0GHZ quad-core Xeons, 16GB RAM and an nVidia 8800 GT, and it's run all the Beta releases of doh123's app absolutely fine: I have the multimonitor issue of course, but in windowed mode that's not a problem.

Incidentally, for those of you missing the BOff ability icons, I just used the Rearrange HUD mode to move everything up a little -- even when I switch to fullscreen in Win7/Bootcamp now it doesn't look bad with things up off the bottom of the screen a little.

One big difference between the MacPro2,1 and later models, of course, is that mine has the 32-bit EFI and later ones have a 64-bit. The 8800GT for my machine only works in this model, and I can't use later release cards because this was the only one Apple ever modified for this situation.

I dont really get the missing icons and stuff at the bottom... it should only do that if your like.... running it in a 1440x900 virtual desktop on a 1440x900 monitor (or whatever resolution).... if its the same res as the screen, and in rootless and having to put the extra bars on the top, its going to push off the bottom. Normally you run a window app slightly smaller than the screen its going on.

Apple 4870 512MB cards work just fine in Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1. Although they're a tad expensive. If you can get your hands on to the right PC card though and buy a couple of power cables then you can easily flash them. I had two 4870 1GB XFX cards in my Mac Pro 1,1 using a couple of PCIe Y-splitter cables. Worked great with Crossfire in Windows. Ran them for about 9 months without issue. See here.

Yes, my Mac started with an ATI card, but I swapped it out for the nVidia.

I was saying that there are no nVidia cards later than the 8800GT that I can use.

all of a sudden know the beta 4 version no longer works on my mac. I have tried the enabled disabled thing you mentioned earlyer, except for mine has been crashing during patching not during loading.
Maybe you could post beta 3 back up for the people who were having problems with beta 4.

P.S. as soon as i can get this working I would love to join the "Mac Fleet" :D:)

how is it not working, what is happening exactly? whats the crash?

While the little loading bar says "patching..." the screen goes completely black, and one of the 2 windows that open while you play closes.

I know Macs switched over to a base Linux with its OSs, will this run on my Linux Mint 7 install under Wine? I'm not even that familiar with Wine but I've so completely had it with Windows I'm willing to try anything. I'll even (wow) buy a Mac if I need to but using Wine it sounds like I may be able to use my Linux install. What a great effort by Doh123 and the community, thank you!

Well, if you want to get technical Mac OS X uses a kernal first developed by NeXT and now by Apple. The userland stuff is BSD... Theres not much Linux (no kernal) in Mac OS X. Well, there is linux programs people modified to install on Mac OS X.... But linux is really talking about the kernal.... which OSX doesn't have.

Mac OS X is part of the big POSIX family. Which Linux is a part of, along with lots and lots of other OSs.... So if you want to say that Macs switched over to anything it would be BSD as they are more BSD like then Linux like... But even that is not precise.

    Sorry for being so nerdy....

I don't think you could use wineskin as its a .app wrapper... also doh has said xe uses xquartz ... So you'll need to rip that out as that only works on macs. So I think its safe to say that you will have to do some heavy modifing to get it to work in a GNU/Linux distro. It might be easier to start with standard wine and modify it to get it to work. I havn't googled it so not sure if somebody already has. But i'm sure you could use wineskin as a template to start from.

Somepeople have used crossover - so you might be able to get a version of that to play.

oh, one person says stock wine works

So that might be the way to go for you.

I think there were reports over the last few days that we now work with vanilla wine, so you can try that as a starting point.

The wrapper works pretty good for me. One question though, any possibility of getting the Post processing to be able to turn on? The graphics seem a little simple / fixed pipeline.

I've tried both "UseGLSL"="enabled" and "UseGLSL"="disabled" and in both cases there is no option to turn Post processing effects on. It just says "This option is not supported by the current GPU."

Is the glsl shader support in wine not up to par?

Besides that performance is great. I do get strange mouse behavior in windowed mode if my mouse swings out of the window, but that is somewhat expected.

    OSX isn't Linux based.

Nothing I have here will help you run it in Linux

    but...

I have tested 1.1.37 and 1.1.38 and both seems to run STO just as good as this patched up version of 1.1.36 in here... no better and no worse... so you should be able to install one made for Mint (or Ubuntu) and use it and run STO.

Using Wine on OSX is a bit more complicated, especially with the whole X11 thing... so I bundle it up like this to make it easy... but you should be able to install Wine and get it running... just winetricks IE7 on it first.... or all you really have to do is add the mshtml stuff in, but its easier to just winetricks on IE7

Update: Everything works great for me now after enabling UserGLSL...but ONLY in space. As soon as I dock anywhere it crashes constantly. I figured this out last night as I docked one character yesterday and it stopped working, so this morning I undocked him and played a bunch of patrol missions fine. As soon as I tried docking at D7 to do that mission I am crash city.

I have an 8800GS card in my mac and am running the beta 4, not sure what else I can do to help, but looks like I am stuck until I can get home to my windows machine tonight and get myself out of D7.

It an odd issue though as I have no problem with any of the patrol Risa missions I did. All those were in space though. Thankfully this was on my alt character and I guess I will wait until tonight to play him further, unless I missed a fix for this in the 40 previous pages of this thread?

Any ideas? Any more specific info you might want/need?

EDIT: Ok I found this earlier in the thread and it worked!! Thanks!
EDIT 2: for like 1 minute then it crashed out again. grr. guess I will be staying out of bases on my mac.
EDIT 3: Last edit, ok it seems like it plays for short periods of time with half resolution in bases. Out in space missions and any actual missions where I beam down it also works fine.

so you got into the game fully with Multisampling disabled???

the sector space smearing is the same bug as ground smearing when a pop up shows on the screen.. like every time you walk near someone.

log in and type in the chatbox .... /renderscale 0.9

then see if it crashes near people....

if you cannot login to your character without it crashing.... at character selection hit ESC, then go to Options, and under video set Half Resolution to On. this is the same as /renderscale 0.5.

    this might stop the crashing.

0.5 is ugly, you might wanna up to 0.9 or 1.1 ... anything but 1 or 0 will work.. the higher the better stuff looks, but the tougher it is on your machine.... up past about 3 or 4 you'll crash cuz its jut waaaay too much.... 2 looks really good, if your machine can handle it, most can't.

the special Crossover build is basically identical to mine in how it runs except they don't have Multisampling enabled.... and it has the same exact bugs.... theirs does use their own custom made X server though and I use a build of Xquartz.

are you sure its actually hanging? When I test installed from disc, it took well over an hour to install, and it sat in a couple of places for 10 or 15 minutes kind of like it was hung.

It is likely int he future that they will make a port that is Wine or Cider based.... but they will not ever tell anyone that until its common public knowledge. The chances of EVER having an actual native port is practically non-existant since the whole game is based on DirectX, and a Wine/Cider pot would allow them to do it cheaply, and use the same current codebase they use on Windows.

That said, for actual performance, the best way for them to go would be Cider... for one it doesn't rely (much) on anything X11 related, making it very fast... and all they'd have to do is write a Mac compatible Launcher/patcher and let Cider handle the main game... it would be near native, barely being able to tell the difference.

Wine itself is nice, but until it has a quartz driver and is always stuck with X11... its never going to be able to match Cider in performance, and integration to work like a native app.

I've only docked at two stations but it's definitely "crash city" each time I do. I don't have Windows to fall back on so I have had to get unstuck myself, and I have found that if I log in at non-peak (almost ghost town) times, I can move around stations and interact with NPCs. So I can log in at 4AM CST and beam to my ship real quick like.

Glad to see someone else with the same graphics card as I have is having this issue. It means that there will be a fix someday. :D

You're right it didn't actually hang but it took over an hour to get past that, and another hour to finish, but it runs well now.

The only gripe I have is the rotation of the 3D camera. In space it can get really bad when Im in combat and Im trying to look at my enemy, but it resets the camera for some reason when I get to a certain view. i don't know if this has been talked about before. I have this same issue under Crossover.

I'll third this one! I'm running an iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo with the 8800 GS. The game runs beautifully through the wrapper - until I dock at Earth Spacedock. Then STO crashes, and any attempts to re-log (since I'm now at Spacedock) also crash.

I'm delighted to report that my ATI Radeon 4870 responds beautifully to having GLSL enabled. Space and ground missions have been entirely flawless, graphics turned up high. I've got my bumpy textures back again! Haven't yet tried visiting spacedock, but almost everything else is super smooth (turning on anti-aliasing slows things down a bit, but I hardly notice the difference).

Nice work! I got this to work great not only with STO, but also Champions :D

Easiest way to launch Champions is to set the "Show all Games" option in the STO launcher (which you then need to restart). Champions will then be available in a pulldown list at the bottom. Select it, wait for the patcher to take a look, and then hit Engage =)

Is there any support at all in WINE for the XBox 360 controller? I prefer to use it in Champions, and right now (unsurprisingly) it doesn't work with this method.

I'll also report that it works fine for me both with and without the GLSL setting, but the visuals are much better WITH GLSL enabled because of the shaders. It does take a lot longer to launch either game the first time with this setting though while the shaders are compiled.

thats cool... not sure why the glsl being on crashes the game for me.. might just be a Geforce 9000 series issue.

Wine doesn't have much, if any at all... support for USB at the moment. I can use things already seen by the system, but not directly. I've never really gotten any joysticks or game pads functioning correctly.
