Odd, can you dump the full command line getting run? Might be a quoting issue between cmd.exe and wine.

As a Mac user playing STO via Bootcamp ... who is very happy to play WoW and City of Heroes in OSX ... I heartily endorse this effort to bring STO to the Mac Side.

I downloaded and moved a copy of STO into it...... It worked without a hitch. It's a bit slower than bootcamp but it works.

Amazing. Fantastic. Could you do the same for other games?

Another amazing thing is that you did this on your own in just a few days without Cryptic Tech support and their own Devs can't even make a decent camera after years of mucking about.

I will... I'll have to look through the Wine debug channels and figure out which one to turn on that will give the full info.

EDIT: looks like there is a winebrowser debug channel on its own... so I'll turn it on and try the links again.

    EDIT2:

ok.... I've played with all the debug channels and messages... this following is the only thing I've found useful.

you can tell from the URLs you do see that I clicked through the top URLs and the buddy key claim one thats up right now.

I have no idea why it has the windows\\system32 in front... other than system32 is where winebrowser.exe is.... but it still looks fishy. I might try asking on the Wine forums, this isn't something I've really messed with very much.

EDIT: this is just the last part of when I clicked the buddy link by the way...

    of course...

I have a list on the wineskin homepage (http://wineskin.sourceforge.net) that I know exist that used Wineskin.... There are also hacks of Crossover and Cider used for many games too, but I prefer using normal Wine to keep it legal. There are hundreds of Windows games that have wrappers floating around the web for them to run them in one of these ways. If you looking for a Mac gaming community that is basically all about running Windows games on macs without Windows, take a look at the forums at http://portingteam.com

yes, the game runs fine on Linux with Wine... Wine 1.1.37 and 1.1.38 are reported to run it just fine on Linux. i use standard Wine builds in Wineskin by default... and my new test version of STO is using a stock 1.1.38 (the current one I have up here is not running stock, cuz I made it before stock Wine could run it... but the guys at codeweavers are great on getting patches and fixes and making Wine great for gaming.)

it should run a lot better on Linux than it does on OSX... cuz Linux distros use X11 as their default windowing system, you aren't stuck with having to use Xquartz like I have to on Macs.

My Macbook Pro is a 1920x1200 resolution and I'd like to run it in a lower resolution to increase framerate. For some reason the wrapper does not offer me any widescreen resolutions (just the 4:3 ones and my default desktop resolution). Any thoughts on how I could get 1440x900 or 1680x1050 as an option?

you need to run WineskinSettings.app inside of the wrapper... and in its Screen Options set it to start in a resolution that you want to start in. STO isn't detecting the hardware right, so has no idea what resolutions you can use. If you start it up with Wineskin set to like 1440x900, then STO will be able to use it since its the "desktop" resolution.

It's trying to resolve as a program, against %PATH%. Goodness knows why. You might get more mileage out of stracing it.

(If you still can't figure it out, I'll take a look)

Here is what my settings look like... most are grayed out near the bottom save a couple....

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4486028/STO/STO%20Settings.png

There is a settings file located in the game folder... at "Cryptic Studios/Star Trek Online/Live/locadata/gameprefs.pref" I have not tried it, but I'd guess if you deleted this file, the patcher would re-download a default one....??? maybe? you can maybe try renaming it and see what happens.

I don't know if this was in response to Chris-Papa or me, but my setting looks identical to yours except that I can't put my Max Lights per Object setting to higher than 2. I'm not sure if that's the reason my starships aren't lit up or not. Basically my starships (and everyone else's starship for that matter) have dark gray boxes surrounding where the ship portholes are. And the starship name and registry number on the saucer aren't being lit up by anything. The only light on my Original Constitution class ship is on the impulse engines and the bussard collectors.

I find it fascinating the number of people wanting to or running STO on a laptop. I feel like I am in the minority by actually wanting to run it on a desktop machine. Why is there such an interest in running it on a laptop? Wouldn't you rather want to do it on a desktop that has a little more power?

Because a majority of macs sold are laptops.

I play STO on my desktop and my macbook pro

because i have no interest in owning a desktop.... if gaming was my main focus of a computer, then I might consider it... but it would be hard to give up the portability.

I agree with you doh, I need the portability for work and the game runs fine on the laptop - so I see no reason to not play on it.

A follow-up question doh, you said that the wineskin may not have detected my hardware properly, I have the Nvidia 8600M-GT (512MB) in my MBP and when I started the game it said some warning about the video card not having the right 'capability' - but in windows everything works fine (bloom etc). Is there a way to force detection of the hardware or will running that WineSettings.app do the trick?

There are just as many Mac users as there are PC users.

    Um, no there aren't.

Wine actually detects the graphics card fine... it just STO isn't able to get the information correctly from Wine. They added some Wine detection, but it doesn't figure out video cards.

It doesn't really matter if it has that error message or not, you just run default and its fine.

I've installed the Mac wrapper and been playing for a few hours today. It's been a lot of fun and great cause I can use both my monitors (which I can't do in BootCamp).

I've only noticed one thing and it seems that at points the depth seems off. Like I'll be fighting an escort and it looks like it's in front of me but it's really above me or behind me.

Am I crazy or is anyone else seeing this?

    I'm on a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo iMac with an X1600 running 10.6

I just played for a couple hours and the only issue I see is that I get a double mouse cursor of sorts. Basically two cursors one on top of the other (one an arrow the other the STO symbol). When I move the mouse the arrow is faster and the STO symbol lags a bit. Basically behaves like mouse trails - not a big deal and usually I don't notice it because I use the keyboard for most stuff.

that isn't anything to do with this.... that is because it turned Software Cursor on in STO.

Under video options, you can scroll down and click on the troubleshooting section title, to expand it, and disable the software cursor, then it should run fine.

I was in a similar boat with my ATI card until I pawed around inside the wrapper to enable GLSL (directions elsewhere in this thread) - once enabled, lighting and textures were beautifully improved.

Okay, tried that, but now the game is crashing before I even get to the character select screen. Are there any more steps I should take before I try loading it again?

EDIT: Okay I've come to the conclusion that the game will always crash with the GLSL ENabled and will always load with the GLSL DISabled. Am I pretty much screwed? I just hate playing the game with subpar graphics when I know they can look so much better.

Hey guys, I'm having problems installing STO on my 13in MacBook Pro. I was going to try a buddy key, and just finished downloading the client via a torrent. I ran the installer just now through StarTrekOnline.app, and it went on for a bit until it tried to execute the DIRECTX installer. It stood still there for over an hour, I think, so I canceled the installation.
Since then, I can't get the option to install STO from the setup.exe again! =( When I start StarTrekOnline.app, it shows the login screen, but naturally I can't do anything from there since STO is not installed. Any suggestions on how I can "reset STO to uninstalled"?

Many thanks for any advice, and eternal gratitude to doh123 for this awesome workaround! (At least I assume it's awesome :P I'm counting on being blown away once I get it working!)

It can be VERY SLOW during the setup.. My whole setup from disc took well over an hour, if not an hour and a half... not totally sure why.

If you want to try the setup again, you can right click Star Trek Online.app and select "show package contents" and run WineskinSettings.app you find in there.

If you can get the log in screen and patcher.. it should also work from there but it will have to do some major sized patching that could take a very long time to download everything its missing.

I too am trying this, with a friend key.

    Macbook Pro
    Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz
    OS 105.8
    GeForce 8600MT
running to an external monitor with res @ 1920x1080

    Went thru install fine,.
Launches, and seems to patch fine.
When I hit engage it goes thru the Cryptic and Atari screens fine...then crashes when the Trek Logo shows up for loading.

I've gone into the packages and changed the resolution to 1280x800 to see if that helps any.....which it didn't. (I noticed the patchnig phase sems to have frozen this time, so I hit cancel and it got to the launch screens)

I'll be reading more thru the thread for ideas or settings, but if anyone happens to see this before I get back, feel free with the suggestions :)

EDIT: Reset to "Current Resouliton" and edited the user.reg to enable glsl
Patching bar zoomed thru this time...
trek logo is staying up longer...though I'm not seeing a progress bar..if i'm supposed to...And I'm in now!...
