I noticed when doing a mission , other ships shields bubbles were black or see half a black bubble on one side of the ship.

Checking the video setting , mission to defeat the Klingon was very dark space mission, almost went to get a flashlight to see, lol
I copied over my game from my bootcamp and placed it in my crossover folder. Then I drop in the file that doh123 provided and followed his instructions and able to play the game.

I noticed 1 mission where some grate textures were solid black... but there are similar texture problems in Windows at times, so not sure what it is. First thing you should do is a full STO scan of your files in case you have anything corrupt.

Hey, whenever I select the installer EXE for STO it brings up the install screen with the starbase then says it had a critical error. I just downloaded the EXE from the STO site. Can you please help?

Try installing it on bootcamp first in a windows environment, then copy over the files to your mac, and then drop in the file doh123 has provided.

That method work flawless for me and enjoying STO right now

Thank you so much Doh123. this has been a lifesaver. :D
This is one less thing I dont have to reboot into my windows side anymore. This is working wonderfully, I will see about doing something like this for all my old PC games like Evil Genius. The less I have to reboot into the windows side the better I like it. Having to reboot into windows side is just a pain and those that suggest you just reboot dont understand the real pain when you have to work with windows and re-setup another OS to do what is easier on the mac side.

    Running:
    MacBook Pro 3.1, 15.4 inch
    Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.2ghz
    DDR2 SO-DIMM, 4gb (667mhz) Ram
    Western Digital 2.5, 500gb HD

    Time for more bug reports:

Weird one this time. Beta 3.1 had flawless sounds as far as I can tell. Beta4 however starts to drop sounds, kinda like trying to play too many sounds at once, and the ones playing gets dropped. Not sure if you changed something that handles the sound.

Will try to copy my sto folder from bootcamp and try again with beta 4.

Excuse me if I missed something. But downloaded and copied folders as specified.

Have 2 monitors, so set startup to windowed, 1280x1024 just to see it run.

    However, get errors as follows:

2/7/10 12:44:18 AM [0x0-0x139139].Star Trek Online.Wineskin.prefs Wineskin: finished shutting down

From discussions I understand fullscreen with multiple monitors does not work.

    Thanks

no sound changes... no... the Core Audio driver for Wine isn't the super best thing int he world... so yes when it gets too many sounds a few might be lost... that hasn't changed in any version I put up.

I am however getting a bug when landing on K7.. not on planets in general, just station K7. It kicks me out with a crptic error message. I switch back to pc side and am able to hoof around on K7.

check your files.. or copy the Windows version back over.... K7 is running just fine, you might have messed up files.

Hm, I think I must be missing an elementary step. The launcher never seems to render - just a white window and the STO System Tray in the corner. The only thing I can spot in my console logs:

The Xquartz X11 server, and Wine are running fine if you got a white window and a system tray icon....

what Computer is it? CPU, GPU, ram, OS version? How did you install? Are you running it in fullscreen mode?

1920x1178?? are you attempting fullscreen with that? it sounds more like a reduced Y size for a rootless window running without a virtual desktop, which can cause problems. Make sure the screen options are set to run fullscreen at your current resolution, just to see if it works, then try other settings after you know it works for sure.

the user needs admin rights only because the wrapper is a fake .app and has to read and write everything inside of itself, and use create and use a symlink in /Applications. On a personal machine there is little reason to not run an account that has admin rights... which is why the default is admin rights. Yes if you do TRIBBLE up and run a trojan is more likely to cause more extensive damage, but even from a limited account that can be done since there are still some user escalation bugs around... I've been trying to work on a way to make it still work like a normal .app and not need admin rights, but its a bit tricky.... but it only needs admin account rights, not full root password or anything...

    Hey Doh123,

This is a minor issue. So I am playing on the 1st gen Unibody 15" MBP. When I am at my desk, I have an external monitor which runs at 1920x1200. Thats a bit high for the game, graphics aren't smooth. So I set up wineskin through the app to run at a lower resolution. Works great, game lowers the resolution for me, life is good.

Now when I am not connected to the monitor, my display is 1440x900 (laptop resolution.) Bet you can see where this is going. When I launch the game, it launches at 1600x1000 (the lowered external monitor display) and everything is cropped.

I can switch it myself in wineskin, but was hoping for a better idea?

    Thanks,

    J

well, if it attempts to run a resolution thats higher than your screen can go.. it'll just run at the screen maximum. If you log all the way into STO and change STO resolution down to 1440x900 (if it picks it up as available) or another size, it should scale correctly to your screen.... Its only off screen cuz STO is running too large for your monitor, and Wineskin doesn't prevent it... it can't really since its using work-a-rounds to lack of resolution changing support in Xquartz.

If STO isn't picking up 1440x900 as available... which it probably doesn't since it cannot detect video correctly... you'll just have to always set the Wineskin setting back each time.... or just run both screens at 1440x900.

Would it be possible to have a small script run and detect the screen size at startup, and then make sure the resolution setting isn't bigger than that?

You need to change your resolution in STO.. if you have it set to one of the smaller 4:3 resolutions, its going to use black bars on the sides of a widescreen monitor.
    NetSlut wrote: »

the problem isn't Wineskin detecting screen sizes... its what STO detects.... in STO under Wine it will pretty much just detect your desktop size (set in Wineskin) or 800x600, and 1024x768.... any maybe 1152x864...

Fullscreen has to use a virtual desktop mode in Wine to draw and change sizes correctly. Wine doesn't limit a virtual desktop screen changing sizes by your computer.... so it will make it bigger than your screen and you'll only see part of it.

If STO picked up th screen right you could just log into the game and switch it 1440x900 and it would change.... but I cannot do anything to alter the games detection.

I can test some about using fullscreen without using a virtual desktop, but in most games is very unstable.

    EDIT:

thinking about it more.. I could probably modify Wineskin to not launch a Virtual Desktop starting resolution as higher than the Max size of the current screen.... if it was bigger than max, to just launch it as max, then whatever game (including STO) is ran, would see the monitor max size as an available resolution, instead of the larger size it was trying to run... sounds like a good thing to add.

I'm thinking that there may be a combination of things we might be able to set that might help.

For instance, if STO were set to use current desktop size, then we would "only" need to create a desktop of the right size for it to adapt each time it ran.

I understand that the Wineskin can't fix this issue on its' own...

I've added in my bug list for Wineskin fixes....

if the resolution setting for the virtual desktop of the fullscreen mode (or windowed mode) is greater than the current resolution of the screen, to use the current resolution of the screen instead...

this should fix the issue, and be a better way to handle it for most all games.

collecting bugs and issues still to do some upgrades to Wineskin when I get time.... always helps having people testing things so I can add all the things I never think of.

Just found this thread, and downloaded 4. Here's to hoping I won't have to boot into my Bootcamp partition again. Running at 1280 x 800 with the game settings around 75% on a new Macbook 13" 2.26 ghz with 4 GB ram. The only problem I'm having beyond the ones on currently listed is that STO is running a little dark. The brightness slider in STO's options does nothing at all to increase or decrease it. Nothing bad enough to keep me from playing in OS X though.

    Thanks again for your efforts!

Ok, so thus far I've tried everything I can think of, bar Bootcamp, to get this running. I'd really hoped Beta4 would do the trick, but it hasn't. I've tried installing from the disk with Wineskin and also just copying the Cryptic Folder into the c_drive but they crash at the same spot. I'm probably overlooking something really simple, but I can't think of anything. I have a MBP 4 with an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, I'm running fullscreen, and it still crashes at the loading screen with the Cryptic Oops! popup. It also crashes in the Crossover app, if that's any indication of something I'm missing. Anyone have any clues? I read through this thread a few times, but I'm still stumped.

First off ill say that i am running mine in rootless mode which can cause some issues.

However, since it crashed at launch sometimes, it does fix itself after a few crashed.
I just keep launching until it does not crash, then it will be fine.

How many would you say is a few crashes? I'm going on #20 something crashes. I've tried windowed mode, I've tried fullscreen. I don't even know what to try at this point. I'm just doing the same things over and over with the same result.

crash.log is a screen full of

    100207 21:17:45 20 MasterControlProgram[1]: Shutting down: C:\src\Core\CrypticLauncher\StartingScreen.c(637)

and other messages yell about variations of

    ideas?

I've never used dual displays or any other than the standard MBP screen, although I'd recently installed and then deleted Parallels. Could that be doing something strange with it all? These most recent attempts are fresh installs with the wineskin install button.
