I was just about to give this a try when i discovered that Codeweavers announced 3 days ago that they have an unofficial version 8.2 that runs Star Trek Online.
Its not a "supported" build just yet but I've been playing STO with it today with no problems on my 27" iMac Quad Core. Graphics quality is a little bit lower than playing under Windows XP and Boot Camp but it saves from having to do the boot camp reboot.
Running the Beta 3 release on a early 2009 Mac Mini and it is running great. The only issue I'm having is that ground movement controls are a bit sluggish, but I haven't yet tried tweaking thinks to see if I can resolve that. But it is completely playable.

yes, theirs is basically the same thing.. except it replaces Crossover Games, which breaks support for some other games people might have played... and its a Demo unless you pay to license it. Mine works the same, a bit easier in the end, and is free :-)
beta 4 doesn't normally allow running normal windows in rootless....
if you do what you say and get it running that way, and set STO to run in window... you cannot ever switch back to fullscreen without crashing... resizing the window doesn't always work, and occasionally makes you have to quit and start over....... I had to switch to fullscreen by manually editing STO preferences file.... its safer, even with an annoying mouse cursor.. to run in a virtual desktop.
you can, by switching the wineconfig first. but you have to leave the game and re-enter it. if you accidentally fullscreen it, click in the top right of the window and if you get it right it'll go back to windowed. for some reason switching to full only causes the graphics to stop working, but the maximise button in the app still works if you know where to click. I'm using Beta 3 any reason to move to V4?

if 3 is working... no not really any reason to.
I never thought so many people would wanna play i a window.... i just play fullscreen at my normal desktop rez

Most people probably don't. I tend to browse the net or talk on IM while playing. hiding the game is possible but I like being able to see what's going on

That's how I play too. I always have a browser and IM open while I'm playing. I can't stand fullscreen.

I do all that and hie fullscreen just fine.... when hidden it still makes noises.. if you get a message or get attacked you hear it... means I gotta put in my hearing aides to play... but fullscreen is still nicer when playing :-)
It does the same thing on my laptop and desktop. I was playing on my laptop when the servers crashed, but that really shouldn't affect my desktop at all. I copied the Cryptic Studios folder into a Crossover Games bottle and was able to launch it there. Not sure what is going on with the Wineskin client.

I'm still trying to find a good way to make Wineskin run under a single Icon...
under normal usage the main program you run is just a luncher... so you'll notice you get a second icon on the dock, if you launch it from the dock. Since the first one keeps bouncing, the launcher is getting hung up....
I'm not sure how exactly... the only loop it could get stuck in would be the X11 one.. if it was trying to run with a stuck processes, but I put an error check in for that, and it should prompt you saying its already running and ask if you want to kill it... so not really sure why its just hopping. Kill other win apps (Crossover) and X11 apps or anything you need saved.... go in Terminal and type all these lines....

not sure it will help, but thats really odd that it just started doing that on two machines.... not sure what to tell ya.
Excellent! You helped me figure it out. On both machines I had launched it and set it to "Keep in Dock". When I tried relaunching, I was running the shortcut in the Dock. Launching from the Applications directory has fixed the "problem" and I'm back running again! Thanks!

duhh!!! i shoulda thought of that :-)
now I know for the next time.
there is a fake app inside the app that is what actually runs, cuz the dock icon and top menubar name actually come from the X server, since Wine doesn't do anything like that.... it cannot run by itself, it has to be launched by the launcher in a very specific way.... then the launcher also handles getting Wine started and monitoring everything....

Does the Codeweavers one fix either the alt key or the mouse cursor issues? If so, is there anything we can learn from their implementation?
I just gave this a try after some frustrating issues with dropping framerates in Bootcamp mode, and I am thrilled! I get better performance at a higher graphical setting now than I ever did in Windows on my iMac! Thumbs up!
I did have to change my mouselook sensitivity from the default of 2 all the way up to max, not sure if anyone else had this issue but I could barely turn my character at all on the ground. In space the default setting seemed to work fine.
One question: screenshots - is it possible to take screenshots in-game? The Mac controls don't work, I guess because STO is running in Wineskin?

I haven't checked... they probably do. It doesn't help me any though, as my problem comes from Xquartz X11 server. Codeweavers custom made their own X11 server they use in Crossover. It also handles switching from window to fullscreen much better, because its really nice for Wine and not the bare minimum that Xquartz is. Wish I knew someone who could write me a custom X server, or add proper RANDR and fullscreen/rootless into Xquartz.

no idea on the mouse control thing... never had that issue.
I haven't tried taking screenshots.... whats the normal way to do it in STO in Windows? is there a screenshot key?
I grabbed a couple of screenshots the other day, but they were planned, and it was slow, cuz I used grab.app timed shot.
EDIT:
I just tried some and the two following commands seem to work... it stores the screenshots inside the Cryptic Studios folder in the Star Trek Online/Live/screenshots folder...
Don't know if it's been posted anywhere, running out the door quick so can't check, but the latest version I downloaded (Feb 6) works great. I am however getting a bug when landing on K7.. not on planets in general, just station K7. It kicks me out with a crptic error message. I switch back to pc side and am able to hoof around on K7.
Everywhere else worked fine tho. Space, landed on the guardian planet, the kilingon space ship etc.
This is incredible. I may just install this on my MBP once I get some time
& inclination. Thanks for doing this. I really like the idea of being able
to play this game on my laptop.
Installed this on my iMac 27" system last night. So far running without any major flaws. Well report any problems that I come across.
Like to say this blows away the PC side, the graphics are beyond amazing. I was thinking this was due too, it was 2am and lacking sleep. But this morning after firing up the game was still blow away by the detail and the performance of the game on the mac.
Thank doh123 for all your hard work and also the people from Codeweavers
has anyone tried installing this under crossover games?
I have both crossover games and crossover mac pro
I have found codeweavers to be a good solution to dual booting, I run LOTRO with it plus some of my other windows apps I must have on my mac
the only thing I use vmware fusion for is my quickbooks pro 2007 lol and thats because Crossover doesn't seem to support the later versions of quickbooks yet
I much prefer my mac to my windows xps m1710, it has better hardware and more horse power and the OS makes better use of the hardware available ...
anyway, just asking, since I use my mac primarily for the business, wanted to check on this before I went ahead and used up 15gigs (approx lol) for another game on it
thanks!
I copied over my game from my bootcamp and placed it in my crossover folder. Then I drop in the file that doh123 provided and followed his instructions and able to play the game.
Thx for the great work, doh! I got a MBP and an external monitor but cant seem to get the game running on the external monitor (except windowed). Any suggestions?
has anyone tried installing this under crossover games?
no normal version of Crossover can run this.
There is a special build of CX Games 8.2 that Jeremy White put together that can run STO though... but it has some problems with other normally supported games.

I've got a lot more than that open and still play fullscreen
what do you mean by stopped launching? need more details. You should still be able to see the log in page...
Here's a screencast of what I'm talking about:

i got so fed up with vmware fusion, i decided to go with wineskin and it works
"it just works" :P
vmware might be great for...non-gaming purposes but this is awesome...
THANK YOU!

Checking the video setting , mission to defeat the Klingon was very dark space mission, almost went to get a flashlight to see, lol
