Oh, sorry, I should've clarified a bit... this was a fan-submitted thing on the Trek subreddit. This isn't an official picture.

The only thing the fan did was take the still image of T'Kuvma, and added a TNG-style goatee and dreads. To me, this shows that the "different" look of the Klingons isn't that different at all. I don't think there is a need of bringing in a subspecies or subjugated species argument to explain the House of T'Kuvma... we're not dealing with Remans, here.

Take away his razor blade, and give him some updated uniform, and he looks like a Klingon to me!

Correct. Though even with the glabrousness i maintain they would not be given a second glance had they appeared as minor or even secondary characters in TNG/DS9.

I dunno, I always kinda hated watching the space orcs. I'd probably like Star Trek a lot less if most of the eps had Klingons in them. And Worf doesn't count.

Yeah, he's still an ugly Klingon, but at least he's recognizably Klingon. Although, strictly speaking, I bet you could put the same hair and goatee on anyone and they'd be recognizably Klingon. I'm not sure the makeup adds much.

I think that was the point of the fan who made this on Reddit.

It's not perfect, but having this picture in my head will make it far less jarring to watch these Klingons.

There is a ban of reviews, but there are advance viewings apparently, and people are still apparently allowed to tweet about it.

Till next week, I shall hate these people for their privileged life. :p

Grant's also a big deal in the world of Hollywood special effects - for instance, I think he was on the team that made BB-8 function in SW:TFA. He cut his teeth doing special effects of various sorts for Industrial Light & Magic, with a specialty in robotics and remote-controlled devices.

And of course it doesn't hurt that he's got a pretty substantial Twitter following...

He plays Sulu in Star Trek Continues. Vic and Michele were invited to the preview (probably by Rekha Sharma) it's not surprizing that Grant would also be included as their Plus One ;)

No, you see, they're not putting down the other show, so not 'hatchet jobs'. Specially Selected Audience where politeness near-guarantees favorable reactions, though, is a different matter entirely ;)

I would be willing to believe that they would be discouraged to say negative things. But I think forcing them to actually sell a TRIBBLE show awesome would be going too far.

As was pointed out - some of them have a financial interest due to their convention activity for Star Trek to remain popular, but if they turn out to be liars that have no clue what makes a good TV show, I think that would also hurt their convention activities.

So if you find that twitter-affine Trek alumni have seen this and write nothing at all, you might have a hint.

Either way, it doesn't really matter, because in less than a week, we can see for ourselves. Yeah!

Not really. I'm as nitpicky as all hell, but I'm excited by the trailers so far and hopeful from what I hear and read.

There is also the social factor involved. A lot of these guys work together on multiple projects and tend to be close friends. It is pretty easy to bruise egos and damage those relationships when given criticism of somebodies work. For better or worse the age we currently live in seems to have less tolerance for associating with people of differing philosophies. In the entertainment industry in particular there seems to be an inquisition of sorts going on to purge those who commit thoughtcrime.

This seems to be why the entertainment industry reacts so negatively to audience criticism as of late. I can't recall a time when writers, actors, and studio executives have been so openly hostile towards their audiences. Of course this might be a chicken and egg scenario, with social media simply exposing pre-existing anti-social attitudes.

Yeah... it's comments like "The Orville is more Star Trek than Discovery" that make me want to openly root for FOX to cancel it.

And, I truly don't want to do that. At worst, I want to simply not care about it. If you like The Orville, that's great. Go enjoy it.

I suppose there will be room on the Discovery bandwagon for all the naysayers... ready for the b**ching to end.

You have to see claims like that just as a sign that people like different things about Star Trek, and just because we all seemed to be one happy Star Trek loving family, we might not actually have liked it for the same reason and are more different than we thought. Heck, it could mean that what Star Trek is has actually changed over time, and you don't neccessarily like every change about it, but you still see the key to Star Trek as the one thing that attracted you first.
And of course, tastes change, too. I've been influenced by shows like Babyon 5 or Battlestar Galactica, too, and I think that affected my tastes and preferences and also how I see Star Trek.

TNG is still the show that taught me (my) humanistic values. But I find DS9 grayer morality and the harder choices they made more attractive.

Yeah... it's comments like "The Orville is more Star Trek than Discovery" that make me want to openly root for FOX to cancel it.

All of that is fine. It's the snap judgements of a show that hasn't even premiered yet that drive me nuts, LOL.

Sunday needs to get here, LOL, so we can actually start talking about substantial things about this show. Then, the comparisons and ratings of the show can ACTUALLY begin, legitimately.
