I have a feeling the video card maybe going as I have been running the game for years with only occasional game crashes.
I don't really know... if your using the latest version... it could be something specific to your hardware.

    Hi therealdoh123,
I have a quick question. For some reason my STO launcher won't start sometimes. The icon just bounces on the dock and then stays still. Whenever this happens, I would have to reinstall and that means time and bandwidth wasted. This has happened twice, and this third time I've decided to ask you what is happening.
Do you know what might be the problem and what I can do to fix it without reinstalling the game and redownloading all the patches?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
    Jon
You'd need to go in Wineskin.app Advanced and do a Test Run and get logs... then post the logs somewhere like pastebin.com and link them here... so we can see what is actually happening when it doesn't launch.

Sometimes it may be something i the wrapper thats become corrupt, and just moving to a fresh version of the wrapper works, without actually having to reinstall. If its the game files getting corrupted a lot, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

I sometimes encountered the same trouble, I found that the best way to fix it was to open the package, open Wineskin, and go into Tools -> Advanced -> Kill Wineskin Processes. This is usually fixed the problem for me.

I have to say though that recently I upgraded the wrapper to running Crossover 12, and enabled the Mac driver (there are details on the Wineskin site here). I've found the performance generally better, though I had to trash my "C:/Program Files/Cryptic Studios/Star Trek Online/Live/Localdata/Gameprefs.Pref" file which seemed to fix a weird key command issue I was having (incorrect abilities triggering for the keys I pressed, even though I had no custom key bindings).

Anyway, I'm able to run on much higher settings (Recommended settings with a few things tweaked down like character draw distance). Whereas on X11 I really couldn't push higher than lowest settings or I'd get weird graphical glitches. I'm keeping the game limited to 30fps and 128mb VRAM though which seems to keep it smoother for me at least, your mileage may vary.

Basically killing Wineskin processes and dumping the game's (or the launcher's) preferences files will fix most issues. Though with the Crossover build of WINE I don't seem to have those troubles as often (fingers crossed).

nice to hear that the Mac Driver is working. I tried it, but I had tons of issues... I only tried it for about 15 minutes, but I couldn't even get the game playable.

Strange, did you try dumping the game's .Pref file to try starting "fresh", or enabling the Safe Mode option on the launcher? I found that it worked pretty much seamlessly; the only real issue is that Fullscreen doesn't work very well, plus it blanks out my other screen which I don't like anyway, but I found the game became really high contrast and slow in full-screen mode, but in windowed maximised it runs really well.

I suppose it could also be the machine; I'm on a Mac Pro with NVidia GeForce 8800 GT (512mb). It's not an amazing card but it seems to do well enough with STO.

didn't try much of anything... most of the 15 minutes I played with it was waiting to get past the loading screen cuz of a patch :-)

i downloaded the new launcher from a link in the forum and tried to just past it inside the "package" where "Star Trek Online.exe" is. dont know if i even can do that. nothing. i get just an empty window with wine-symbols on the top when i want to start the game. even the small window, where it should say "trying to connect to launcher" or smth like that is empty and has only a wine-symbol on it....
    hm...

hm... thats how i solved the problem: i reinstalled and repatched the game. i had a working "copy" of my 11GB on an external. delete the one on my mac and copied the working one over. updated (took a bit of time) and now it works. i will see how long... but there was a problem and i think doh123 should take a look at it.
    keep you updated.

I've installed and patched the game correctly, following the instructions in the pdf. but once I hit engage, the brightness of my desk top kicks up a notch and then just sits there. I checked the Activity Monitor and the app isn't using any CPU I also have wineskin open in the back ground just in case. The only thing I can do is force quit (regular quit by right clicking the app or crtl-q doesn't work), then the brightness returns to normal. restarting my computer nor trying the engage process multiple times helps. If anyone knows what's wrong, please help

i think i had the same problem when i started with the wrapper. i contacted doh123 and he sent me screen preference files, which i pasted into the package and then it worked. i played around with the wrapper interface (wine interface) but maybe it would fix your problem. i still have the files. if you pm me an email address i can send them to you.
    greets

Origin as in the EA gaming service? If thats what it is you dont need it.

In an other note, I wasn't able to find a setup.exe file that worked so I just removed all files in the new one and put in all the old files from 1.3.2. Its working, but I can't help but feel that the setup needs to be tweaked in order for the program to work better. A blind file transfer probably isn't optimal, is it? If anyone could provide screen shots of what the organisation of assets should look like I would really appreciate it, if its needed anyways.

I tried just putting in what I didn't see in there already, I.E. the program files folder, but that didn't work. Thats what put me on the setup.exe hunt. Really glad thats over.

The frame rate seems to be smoother, but I need to play more to be sure about all thats changed. One more question, in here some people say its better to have shaders on low instead of off, is that wise? (possibly misquoting, sorry)

There isn't much of a difference in speed from then and now... and there is really no reason to do a re-install if you already have an install that works.

doesn't use java in any way... have you rebooted since you tried? Guess something could have gotten corrupted in the wrapper... could move the installed game from the current one into a new copy

and there is really no reason to do a re-install if you already have an install that works.

Good news! Thats very comforting, and it makes sense too, slow down issues before a crash are not as severe, while the crash often takes more time to happen. Good stuff all around, thanks again!

I have the most recent app version - but after this morning's STO patch I am crashing after a VERY long Loading screen (10+ minutes on the Loading...screen, used to be at max 2 mins) to desktop. Gets through Loading, then crashes before the character selection screen.

I can't make a new thread so here is my thread in this whatever it is.

I tried to follow the directions in the linking account faq. I did as it said and tried to login with my cryptic account and instead it just told me I had failed to login. This was super annoying.

After that long now I have messed up my account by linking that one to a new perfect world account. All I wanted to have my display name from the other account.

I have messages out to support. I don't understand why their setup has to be so much more complicated than any other game out in the industry so far.

can you be any more descriptive? They should at least attempt to do something.

I'm running into a similar issue. I've grabbed the direct download exe from sto.perfectworld.com (ST.25.20121026a.8_EN.exe) but when I click "Choose Setup Executable" in Wineskin, point it at that exe, and let Wineskin work, it comes back with

"Oops! No new executables found! Maybe the installer failed...? If you tried to install somewhere other than C: drive (drive_c in the wrapper) then you will get this message too. All software must be installed in C: drive."

and I can't proceed with the install. Is there a specific exe I should be using for the Wineskin setup?

I'm having a lot of trouble installing it, I've googled how to do it and it is just computer talk that I don't understand. I think I've figured out what to do but I keep getting an error message that says "If you tried to install somewhere other than C: drive (drive_c in the wrapper) then you will get this message too. All software must be installed in C: drive.". What does this mean?

I suspect that the file you are downloading is not the actual STO but an installer wizard. I am having the same issue. We need to be able to download the actual STO that contains the setup.exe.

All these websites are supposed to update their version of the game periodically. I would not be surprised if none of them had the actual file we need and just carry the one thats given out. This will likely never change, I hate to say this but the skin needs to be updated to accept the FTP version of the game download. I could not even find a torrent of the old version.

guys... the installer EXE you download form this site is NOT the game... its a program that downloads the game for you. That program will NOT work... you need to download the full game before even trying ot use th wrapper. That means your download will be several gigabytes in size.

That means get an app like Transmission or anything else that does torrents.

    Go to the download page...
    http://sto.perfectworld.com/download
and click to download the torrent... Open the .torrent file to download it through the torrent programs (Transmission or BitTorrent or whatever you use). Once you have that full download, there is a setup.exe you can use with the wrapper.
