That was rather unkind. Moreover, totally uncalled for. What should I have told the OP then? That he was right, and Cryptic is a horrid money-grubbing company, and how dare they pull an April Fools joke?!
Sorry, but not gonna do that. Sometimes people just need to snap out of it, and with a healthy sense of self-relativism, laughingly realize they fell for an April Fools Day joke. No harm, no foul (except maybe the lingering harm from persisting in their thinking they were horribly wronged).
SHAKE IT OFF! is still the best medicine. Taylor, ftw!
What cryptic just did from a PvPers point of view:
Imagine you are a little boy who is disabled and cannot walk. You don't have cloths and nothing to eat. You're doomed to dwell in a dark pit that you cannot leave on you own.
For many years, you've been telling your parents that you would love to have some warm cloths, something to eat, some light and a way to leave the pit or at least be able to move a bit on your own. But your parents keep on telling you that they can't afford helping you and nothing ever happened, and it's getting worse and worse and worse...
Then suddenly one day, on april 1st, your parents show up and they bring you:
- some warm cloths, 2nd hand and slightly worn down - but still better than nothing
- some cheap rice to cook - nothin special, but still better than nothing
- some candles to light up the place - not many, but it's at least some light
- and finally even a wheelchair - an old one, but still it will improve your life a lot!
You enjoy these things all day long and think to yourself: "Hey, life could be worse, I'm finally starting to smile again and have some fun!"
On April 2nd, your parents visit you again and tell you: "HAHA, april fool! You cannot keep any of those things!" And then they start burning all the stuff to ashes and walk away leaving you hungry in that dark and cold pit.
And that's what cryptic just did!
If the launch build wasn't actually on the server. It just would have been a bad joke. But it was there, they were proving that what lot's of people hope for is possible. But they didn't do that to make us happy, they only did it to laugh at us and to show us what we cannot have!
That was rather unkind. Moreover, totally uncalled for. What should I have told the OP then? That he was right, and Cryptic is a horrid money-grubbing company, and how dare they pull an April Fools joke?!
His position is too weak to withstand a debate so he resorts to insults to silence people.
Sad really.
If I were a dev, I'd want the following conditions met:
- A separate monthly subscription regardless of account Gold or LTS status.
- A contract where subscribing players will subscribe for a minimum of one year.
- A minimum of five thousand players willing to subscribe.
- A clause in the contract which outlaws any demands for any features to be added. Any breech of this clause will result in a permanent ban on user's account with the subscription fees for the remainder of the year charged in full at the time of the ban.
- A clause which states there will only be bug fixes aimed at sever stability and game breaking problems. Anything else will receive no attention, with further requests resulting in a ban and subscription charges paid in full.
- The ability to shut down the "rebirth" server when less than 50% of all subscribers fail to log in daily for a minimum of one hour. Subscription fees for the remainder of the year will be charged in full to all accounts at the time of the server shutdown.
- A new contract will be signed yearly, subscription fees will be raised by 100% from the previous year.
-The ability for the provider to modify the ToS at any time for any reason.
All of that is to make such a venture profitable. Since there's nothing new to buy, and boredom will set in killing subscriptions within two months.
Sometimes people just need to snap out of it, and with a healthy sense of self-relativism, laughingly realize they fell for an April Fools Day joke.
I still fail to see how doing exactly as advertised is an April Fools joke. They said Redshirt would be reverted to what the game used to look like at launch (I don't remember noticing any announcement as to when they'd revert it, mind you), and they did exactly that.
If anything, the part about Holodeck being retired in favor of the Reborn version of Redshirt was the joke, not the actual presence (however temporary it may have been) of Rebirth.
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
By this post I can determine you have the worst opinions in everything, aside from terrible Korean-grind MMOs such as Star Trek: Online.
I hate the cash grabs, powercreep and grind they added, most of it recently (DR, I look at you).
But quite honestly, the game back then was terrible. So terrible, not enough players was playing it to sustain it.
The spec tree was garbage. No really, you had to spec in the weapon type, the damage type, the ship class... and you were pretty much stuck with it, because, no respec !
The endgame content was ridiculous. Forget all those queued missions and STF.
The Klingon was not even close to be a fraction.
As for the glorified 1.3 pvp, it was a bunch of klingon cloaked and waiting for a poor fed to split from the ball, so they could gank him. Wonderful time indeed.
About half the abilities were useless. Auxiliary to .. Useless. Emergency power ? Useless.
Then I don't remember. Was it when escorts were king, or before they were buffed, and they had the glass from the glass cannons, but without the DPS ? Anyway, no powercreep perhaps, but no game balance either.
Oh, and all the DOFF and stuff, not ingame. Sorry.
As for grinding, well, do "mark of valor/exploration/whatever" ring a bell ?
So yeah, recently we had some terrible decisions. But even so, the game is still better than it used to be back then.
Pretty sure if they made a permanent server like this, it would be deserted in the following month. Pretty much like STO back then.
April fool's jokes are not like "2 days" long. and why the hell would they be Talking about fixes for Download bugs... Plus... it was looking like it would die soon.. But THIS?
Well, I suppose Cryptic did its job when the "announcement" was made about STO: Rebirth... people were really fooled into thinking it was real...
I miss the old Gorn textures. They are a lot better than what we have now, in my opinion. They have a lot more of a TOS look to them, which really makes them amazing!

Unfortunately I can't play the nostalgic build on redshirt - it gives an error message and refuses to start I'd love to have it around, though, with a monthly reset even. I like the idea
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^
"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh
"A filthy, mangy beast, but in its bony breast beat the heart of a warrior" - "faithful" (...) "but ever-ready to follow the call of the wild." - Martok, about a Targ
"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou

I think it was removed. I was unable to play it either. And now I have a 15go patch. I wanted to have the "Where is Sulu ?" feeling again, for fun.
How much you want to bet that the same people whining about this April Fool's prank were some of the same people harassing people with Party Amps on Vulcan a few weeks ago and mocking them when they were asked to stop.
Yeah... I can't really see why people liked pvp in season 0. The skill system back then stank, and there were no cool toys. It was like rock-paper-scissors.... boring.
It would have been nice to keep it around for a few days. By the time I got home from work, realized it was there, and got all 10 GBs downloaded it was time for bed. I got to play for all of 15 mins
The unfortunate thing is, STO has become somewhat of a joke these days.
TRIBBLE poor badly fubared Season releases, the lag monster, maintenance **** ups, the inevitable swing and miss nerf bats and PR relations which really are a standing joke.
Even the CDF is having it's work cut out stemming the tide of negativity from the great unwashed.
Ahhh , but jokes can be cruel sometimes ... , even when that's not their intent .
... and with the half-truth that this started out as , it didn't bode well from the beginning ... , and it ended up about as same as dangling a treat in front of your pet only to snatch it away ...
I think it was awesome that Zero got it to work in the first place. It could have just been a joke for the dev blog but she actually followed through with little to no support.
+1 to zer0niusrex and I hope that she can make an event of it in the future

cryptic in a nutshell

Sad really.
I think he was trolling. It's a well known fact that noone likes the current STO.

Take a look at the submissions since DR - game = dead, noone likes it anymore.

You made a statement of fact, not opinion. "If you honestly believed it was true then the fault is your own."
My character Tsin'xing
You're now on the list
This was actually a ton of work to get this old build functioning on our servers. And even then, we had to disable chat and a bunch of other stuff.
There's no way we'd dedicate server space full time to an old build, let alone support it in anyway.
It was a fun gag for a day or two, but that's about all we could reasonably do.
Sorry. . .
Actually, it's "Engineering."

From myself personally I think you can't speak for everyone as I currently enjoy the game so. . . .
And that graph proves what lol to me it looks like summit you just knocked up on excel lol
Well, you've all heard it right here. STO is dead. Any idea how much longer you'll have your job, Taco?

Hyperbole out the backside, mate.
If you don't calm down odds are STO will out live you
