You were proving that it is possible! I just played the old tutorial on redshirt and it was awesome!
So, is there any chance we might see a permanent early build shard?
I would really really love to see one of these:
- A permanent V1.3 shard
- "Time Travel Shard" (Versions progress (only stable builds) as it really happened in the past)
- A permanent pre-S9.5 shard
- Voting Shard (Starting with the launch build, every month players can vote a holodeck feature that get's ported over)
If you'd do ANY of that, you shall have my moneyz and I'd get a sub again or even LTS.

I would like to see redshirt turned into a launch date, to season four content server. I would love to spend some time playing and just checking out the state of STO in its early days.
I would rather see dev time be used on anything else than what OP has in mind. Also Red Shirt and Tribble are needed for testing. Getting a fourth server just for "Rebirth" sounds like a waste

Well, they could reset the Rebirth server on Tuesdays and give everyone something to do when holodeck has the unexpectedly extended maintenance periods. And wouldn't really require any dev time, just set it up and let it run, no updates.
Oh and to monetize it, make it available to subs only.
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.
What's my position?
That people should know what they're screaming about!

The game is awful and dead. The only real, viable way I can see Cryptic saving STO is doing what they've already done: reverting back to when the game wasn't awful and complete poo.
I'm not talking about replacing holodeck. I'd like to have another alternative game shard, so what's the problem with that?
And pls don't say stupid things like: "I don't want the devs to waste their time and resources" ...cuz that's what they've been doing since S8.
I don't, have a problem with the idea. The codes already exsist, its not like they are creating new ones. "Waste of time, and resources" argument doesn't fly, because reinstalling old codes on a barely used shard should take minimal effort.

There is four shards all in use. You may not like the use but that is the simple truth of the matter. Turning a shard into something for roughly 50 people is an awful idea.
Also, if SWG,WoW, and Asian MMOs fans can all make private servers why can't you?
I have always found the use of "Holodeck" as the prod server to be kinda weird...shouldn't the word "Holodeck" represent a simulation, a la a test server like "Tribble"?
Yeah yeah, I know, it's a video game, blah blah....

1) They could easily add a 5th shard.
2) Redshirt is in use? Srsly? This server is rotting all year long, noone really cares for redshirt.
3) There'd be way more than 50 people in there - I bet it might even be more popular than holodeck is now.

Because cryptic never published the source code for running a server nor was it ever leaked, or am I wrong?
1)How do you know that?
2)Again how do you know that?
3)Maybe there is more than 50 people I would not think for a second it has more people than holodeck

huh you seem to of assumed a lot out of me saying "hell no".
as for the resources thing if that's true then they wouldn't be working on revamping the skill tree's they wouldn't be working on the sector space stuff they wouldn't be working on new content and they certainly wouldn't be brain storming for new consoles.
of course not they are clearly wasting their time...
whether you like it or not it would be a waste of money and time and that's not from my prospective it would be from a business perspective, sure they make a lot of money but we have no idea where that money goes or how much of it goes to perfect world nor do we know how much it actually costs them to maintain the shards and various other services they provide, asking for such a thing is completely and utterly stupid and ignorant of the potential financial and time consuming repercussions of doing such a thing.
Sorry but its the truth.
they also wouldn't be able to add more content to it because as they add content they would need to update stats, items, everything..which means that everything you want from the server will slowly revert to what we have now on holodeck thats the problem with what your suggesting, there is no income for them there, only fan-service which unfortunately is a premium in business.
The only way Cryptic would do this is if no future development is done on these nostalgia servers. Transferring a copy of an old copy of STO to Red Shirt is relatively easy, but the Voting Shard would be difficult to do and would affect future development of the game. Implementing specific features takes some work to do which would require some dev to make sure it is working properly and result in them not working on new content.

If i remember correctly, holodeck was originally going to be the test server, but something went wrong with the intended live server before launch. I could be completely wrong, but i think i remember something like that.
I wouldn't mind if they kept the Nostalgia game around, but reset it monthly. Keep the experience new as possible for those who nostalgia hard and for those just wanting the experience once, without getting ruined by those unable to leave the past. Also ensures that players don't get caught up there eternally, just like they can't get caught up in Tribble eternally.
And while they're at it, open up a PvP server that copies everything from Holodeck over, but disables traits, skill points*, Specializations**, and Masteries, leaving it exclusively to equipment, ship setup, and ship type. Call it Temporal Colosseum or Azure Nebula Server (the site of plenty of temporal crossing; thus conveniently explaining how multiple ships end up there). Not quite Vanilla PvP (they can enforce their own PvP if so desired, without alienating others).
*Skills points could be left in if players do need things like Subsystem Repair, Warp Core Efficiency, or PartGens to deal with the holds, disables, etc.
**Only applies to the player's specializations; Specialist Boffs are permitted. However, there will be a few arenas where they will be excluded.

I understand this. Holodeck is their money making shard. Mirror universe is the Dev shard. Tribble is the testing shard. I think Redshirt could be repurposed to run the first four seasons. At the studio's leisure to load them. As for creating additional shards, I agree, it just not cost effective for them.
Hey guys.. original no TRIBBLE STO is there.. just go enjoy it if thats what ya want to do.
I'm gonna play on my Delta recruit.. and on occasion visit red SHirt to remind myself why I might wanna try and keep complaints about the state of the game to a minimum... *grin*
If the MMO hadn't of been Star Trek....geeeez!
I got LTM with a month after the game went live.. it was an act of faith. Game went places I wasn't pleased with.. and the KDF still about 16 missions, and about 4 sci Klingon not KDF Sci ships short of where i would prefer it to be, But its way way way better then it was...

Then go away and stop trolling the forum...seriously who takes time to post on the forum of a game they feel is dead and not worth their time?

Anyone with any type of mental function left on these forums. I'm sorry my opinion, which is shared by at least ninety percent of the player base, triggered you and that you have an awful enough personality to think of my posting as nothing more than a means to provoke angered reactions from people.
I would suggest stepping away from the keyboard and calming down before you reply with any sort of response.

Someone who has hopes that cryptic might support the idea of bringing back an old school shard that provides all the cool features this game had in the past.
Also, how is this trolling? A lot of people really prefer the game how it was in the past. Especially all the PvPers, cuz right now, PvP is literally unplayable.
