This is happening on the holodeck as well. Started about 7pm est on saturday 8/5/13. This is getting old as well as all the bugs that have been reported but have yet to be fixed.

Folks, it is a gateway issue between providers, not a STO server issue. There is another thread in the PC, Network Issue about it.

There is a concentrated effort by said providers of the internet to bottle tight your connection to STO game server. Until the dispute is settled, there is almost actually nothing Cryptic can do to alter this.We *those affected* are at the complete mercy of this terrrible situation and it started in June of this year, and now has balloned to this...

Yeah, because my ISP is somehow able to tell which character I'm trying to log on. The problem is only happening on one of my characters, but the others log on fine...

All the traces show good connectivity between Verizon and PNAP. The congestion is on cryptic's leg.

    GG blaming it on verizon

Trace routes etc send VERY minimal traffic to do tests. However, since 99% of everyone on this thread is a Verizon customer, it's obviously a verizon issue. If it was a generic cogent issue at the main gateway then thousands would be complaining from numerous ISP's.

So yeah, it's pretty much on Verizon's head at this point ;)

A Verizon Fios Customer service rep that I called went to one of her Technicians and this is what she stated as to the reason for the connectivity issue. "We here at Verizion had placed STO on our black list." No reason was given as to why or if it would be taken off of their said black list. Hence, the game is banned from their internet service.

I have two characters stuck with this issue right now. When I went back to my ship and tried to warp to a new zone I got timed out of game and now I cannot connect to the server without a timeout, although the third character on my account can log in just fine. I have a hard time believing it's a gateway issue with provider because no one else in my house has this issue at all, nor do I have this issue on a second account. Only this one. If it was a provider issue everyone in my home should be effected equally since we're all going through the same provider, or at least my other account through this computer would have this issue.

oh if they get enough complaints they WELL have to take it off or fear loseing money cause this is total BS they need to give us a reason as to why they did that.

its affecting Champions too so odds are you got a bull**** answer from someone that didn't really know, trust me I work in tech support, and I deal with a providers first tier techs daily, it happens a lot.

There is a known squabble between Cognant and Verizon, cognant carriers sto, champions, likely other pwe game traffic, it also carries net flicks.

Most of us, considering its Verizon customers, are very sure this is all related to that squabble were Verizon is allowing ports to get congested because they don't want to pay to open more, they want congant to pay, since cognant is sending more traffic their way they are thiers.

several of the responses people have gotten from Verizon reps has backed up this assumption. So until one side or the other does something, we are all stuck in the middle.

I am also a Verizon customer, and have an...odd form of this problem. Unlike some, I actually can log onto STO. At least on certain characters. I'm not able to log on to Champions or to the Cryptic channels through Pidgin. I don't know why I can get on STO, in this case, but there it is. As a note, I have a lifetime account to both CO and STO, not that I think it has anything to do with it.

odds are not all the ports involved are completely congested to the point of uselessness, I wouldn't be surprised if some arnt seeing the issue at all, which would be all about the routing, but hey, you might just be simi lucky.

They dont need to send a lot of data to demonstrate existing congestion. For example, we can easily tell from the small data samples that the cryptic portion of the link is congested.

Verizon provides phone service to half the country, they are always going to be heavily represented in any sample.

Actually you have several problems going on at the same time, that are being lumped together. Some people cant connect to patcher, some cant login, some get unable to connect to login server errors, etc, but they arent all the same problem at all. I am a Verizon customer, and can login to the auth servers fine, and only have problems with chars left in system space. Verizon has nothing to do with that.

Only thing I find odd is everything else I do on the internet seems to work fine...including guildwars2. I may bring my laptop to a coffee shop to see if that change gets me back on but after a while, not sure I care which company is dropping the ball other than I'd like to know what service needs dropping. I just want stuff to work :)

Verizon FIOS, Lutherville MD. Called up Verizon, they insisted it was a problem on my end and remotely reset either my Actiontec or my ONT (not sure which). It's getting dropped between me and PWE. It's getting dropped by one of the hops through an ALTER.NET server, which looks to me like a Verizon enterprise-class backbone service. I've still got Verizon on the phone looking into it.

before getting on the phone with Verizon, everything looks peachy even though it doesn't work when I launch the game:

Actually most of the problems in here are authorizations failures with a few others interspersed, and given how the net works, its very likely some verizon customers wouldn't see the problem if they arnt running into the trouble ports.

If its Verizon or congants problem could be debated, personally I pay Verizon , not cognat, and their squabble, which some of their own techs support staff have back up this essentially, is affecting my ability to play, that makes me a unhappy customer, which in turn does make it their problem.

and again, congant handles cryptics traffic, so we come full circle to, congant and version squabbling over network traffic loads and who pays. PWE has already said in a thread on their tech support forums that they are talking to cognant, who apparently gave them some sort of shady, "dns issues, have them turn off their modems for 10 mins, try again." answer if that works for anyone, great, but last I saw no one was saying it was in that thread, and refresh or reset modem is a generic fix all for most providers, I issue them every day, and it does fix many problems, but the response is generic.

Yep you nailed it. Son of a !@#$%

Isn't it great that corporate greed is allowed to affect the basic necessities of life, and yes internet is NOW one of those things.

Sorry, I am frustrated too, being one of the Verizon customers on that other thread, and, yeah, corporate greed, but THE BASIC NECESSITIES OF LIFE? Talk about a first-world problem, especially since our phone and the rest of Internet access are unaffected. Seriously, this would be so very funny if it was not so very sad. Especially since at the moment, corporate greed is preventing access by millions to some truly basic necessities of life such as food, shelter, clean water, healthcare etc.

OK, well this is odd. I'm a Verizon customer, and I *HAD* been having issues for a month now trying to get online to play. Suddenly today, everything is working just fine. I can play again. Rubberbanding still occurs, but it's rare and very quick. Like, an enemy ship will jump for a second. But it'll be a few minutes before it happens again.

Definately an improvement for me from what has been happening.

Update: the Verizon tech tweaked something on their end, now the Launcher at least launches but I get 'Failure to authenticate:' as an error code when I try to login. Launching the game directly results in a login server timeout.

Hey folks so I merged a bunch of your threads into one big Cannot Login/Unable to Authenticate thread (and put a proper date so those that do dd/mm/year can understand it easier hehe).

From what I'm looking at it looks like it's a Verizon issue as most everyone here is posting that they have it. Sadly, there isn't anything I can suggest :( I know it's not anything anyone wants to hear so um...

I'm going to run away before everyone comes after me with pitchforks thinking I can do something about it *darts*:P
I am having the same issue and I using Verizon FIOS. I can log onto all of my characters except my main and since last light have had issues with the launcher patching (reinstalling the game didn't fix the issue).

I don't necessarily think that the issue is with Verizon. If it were Verizon blocking access to the servers as other have suggested then we wouldn't be able to log onto any of our characters. The problem is mostly likely one of Cryptic's main servers where most of us have our characters stored is having some sort of issue which is preventing connection.

 Please resolve this soon Cryptic as it is extremely annoying an frustrating to be locked out of our main character or any character that we want to play for that matter!

I spent over a half hour chatting online with a Verizon customer rep. I was polite but told them I knew about the feud between Verizon/Cogent, that this was apparently a throttling/routing issue, and copied/pasted the pertinent trace route and net test info I gleaned.

I'm a network engineer contracted to the USAF, and I know unless you can happily go looking anywhere you want on someone's network, that you can gather evidence, but it's still an extrapolation. In other words, I'm open minded because I know crazy stuff goes on on networks.

I let the customer rep reboot our connection at their end, and then I rebooted the Verizon router on my end. I was able to connect to the patch server and am now downloading the STO software, (I had uninstalled it to attempt a re-install). This is a lot better than I was doing before, which was the "cannot authenticate" error.

Am I logged on and playing? NO. But I'm better off than I was before.

I'm not trying to ruffle feathers or argue what IS or IS NOT the problem. I'm stating what I've done, and my progress thus far. Once the install completes we'll see where we go from there.

Someone who does not need to do a re-install can more quickly determine if having Verizon kill the ISP-end connection AND rebooting the home router might actually be a fix, or a wild goose chase. Hence, I'm passing on this information.

I make no promises, so don't blame me if it does not work. :D

    Regards,
    Mike

I do have a fast connection, and completely redownloaded/reinstalled the game (yay FIOS Quantum), restarted my router, and the Verizon tech rebooted the ONT outside. It's a node on Verizon's backbone that's dropping it for me (see my previous TraceRT results), it doesn't look like it has anything to do with a feud with Cogent at all.

The lovely part is FIOS support is claiming it's not a Verizon server that's causing the problem, even though Alter.net is controlled by Verizon Business/Enterprise. Absolute garbage.

BranFlakes already responded to me on Twitter hours ago to say it doesn't look like a problem on their end, which is how I ended up here in the first place. Bah.

Incorrect. Verizon has not BLOCKED access. It's throttled it's access to cogent. Meaning things might be fine and dandy then splat deader than a door nail or half working half not etc etc.
