And this is all STILL better than the Atari days... At least now they tell you there is downtime not the servers going down for hours and them still telling you everything is working just fine.
Ermm, I've only been playing two weeks but during that time the servers have already been down intermittently a dozen times without warning and then several more times on top of that to fail to "fix the problems" that are causing the previous downtimes... -_-
and again and again and again, oh do forgive me for what is it trolling or something? I mean if they can shut the servers down everyday it only gives us reason to
But the funny thing is it's going to happen any way.Its a matter of fact that sto needs its own servers.Sto is a large game.
and i'm saying they ARE on thier own servers.. as i said the other night i was able to play sto WHILE NW was down for a small beta patch.. the only server that they share is the chat server as all PWE games do they take both down at the same time to reset both for stability
do you really consider us so un-educated for saying that?
that comment is so 1990's
of course not....
all we are saying is there should be separate servers for the US side and at least 3-5 server for the rest of the world side.
it's obvious that the current setup they have is not working....
I do indeed believe they are trying to run multiple games on one network that's why it keeps crashing.
yes in fact I do. Not everyone, mind, but people who literally say "buy another server, all running on one won't work." (and similar).
It is obvious that some improvements are needed to be done, sure, which is what they're working on. Networks was my guess, and appears that's what they're looking into indeed.
I disagree with having separate systems for US/EU, even though I'm in the EU too. One large environment guarantees there'll be always people around (from my PoV now), whereas EU would not necessarily have that large amount of players (of course would be easier to see if Cryptic would release player numbers and location). It also simplifies many other things across the boards. It may be useful, if not existent, to have synched machines in EU DCs to provide STO to EU players within the larger environment (w/o separation, as it is now), but that's a topic for another day.
Yea I saw that, checked the calander and was like " damn they're gonna shut the thing down tomorrow again. the I got booted.. first thought.. "oh good the rage show is gonna start' Seriously people your dissapointing me, 52 min and we'r not even up to page 20... -sighs-

"Ragers, You tiny little ragers, You precious little ragers, Where are you?"
lol i feel no rage, I'm expecting lots of downtime and telling others to expect it too. I will play no matter how bad pwe manages their games and hosting. They will eventually get it right.
"The goal of this maintenance is for additional network performance optimizations to help avoid the outages we saw today."
How many optimizations does it take? The downtime last week was for this. The one last weekend was for this. the few this week was for this. Today it's for this.
I guess my question is: is their network hardware even capable of being "optimized"? At what point is it at it's limits and requires *new* hardware or something?
I'm *not* an tech person or "IT" programmer, just a player who has enjoyed STO the last 3 years. the last 3 weeks...not so much.
As to people going on "Buy a new server, don't run all three games on one server.", do you really think there's one box sitting in an office corner somewhere serving all three games?
It's an old dual-processor Pentium 450 with 4gb of RAM, sitting under Branflakes' desk. They put it there so that while he is monitoring the forums, he can respond to user problems by rebooting it as needed (that is why you sometimes get the "server not responding" message when changing maps). Also, when they need to do "maintenance," he can just reach down and put in the floppy that the devs hand him into the drive and let it run the patch.
the site and launcher did not say sunday just may 13, when releasing information to thousands of people its good to double check it's right.
Exactly. That "mistake" at that spot and for that long time it was up there is TOTALLY inacceptable. And it was not even the first time this happened. The person who is responsible for that would be fired if it was my company.
Before they changed the date this morning, there was a message saying the servers would be down this morning due to network maintenance and it would last about an hour. Then they changed the date to tomorrow for the same reasons. So, please...calm down.
I am not saying that mistakes may not be made, butt after such a weekend of fail, this just may not happen. Sunday meowntenance is very unusual, so I look for the date and if I read 13th, then I mean 13th.

They need to put never winter on another server altogether, this one already had bugs anyways, its not even worth trying to download the ptr for the bonus hour thing because why ? you won't get it anyways the server will be down, and the worst part about it is I'd actually like rubber banding in the game then not being able to play it at all, you can atleast reset doffs

lol cant fire someone for making a mistake, they just need to take more care to properly inform their customers and more care in upgrading their hosting network to handle the load of a new game and expansion.

I have to agree...the "Public Face" of a company HAS to be perfect at all times. I may not have fired the person, but they would definitely NOT remain in the position to embarrass the company again.

When you say 'floppy', please tell me you DO mean the 5,25 inch? Because that would just be awesome!

It's back up, Im in game now
Young pup - floppies are 8 inches.
I'm sure that it has both a 5.25 and a 3.5, and they use whichever is appropriate to the size of the patch that needs to be installed.

Holodeck or Tribble? Tribble keeps telling me server is still unavailable at this time.
