Dont believe the naysayers, this is a step firmly in the right direction.I've found that feeling coming back, you know, the I cant wait to log back in one.The Romulan faction may just breathe some much needed passion back into a long time vets jaded perception of STO.
The only problem I have with it so far is that I'm stuck with the Ha'apax at T5 unless I grind up a large quantity of zen.
This is the only major point of contention I personally have with what's been released and discussed so far, especially with the legacy pack being pushed as hard as it is by PWE and Cryptic. I can only imagine, having played MMO's as long as I have, when LoR goes live and all the people who don't follow forums, read dev blogs and test server/patch notes, find out about this "it" is going to hit the fan.
Somebody getting uppity about canon? No problem! Just take a deep breath, and repeat after me:
well ive played through to the cap and what can i say ...
this is going to be the best mmorpg ever bar none hands down, ok im a trekie so i might be a little biased but even if this game did not have the trek hook im sure i would feel the same.
this new story line is awsome, it hooks you and reels you in like no other.
the star fleet and klingon storys were very good but pale in comparison to this.
where the other offerings were mostly episodal with some extended storys playing through this far has been more akin to a full blown mega feature movie, i just cant wait to see what the rest has to tell us about the romulan struggle for power.
now down to bugs in the game, very sorry didnt spot any at the moment there may be a few i didnt notice or maybe i was just very lucky and none cropped up but i found the overall gameplay to be very stable and never spoted any flaws in the charactors or scenary, if it was interactive as in a console or person you needed to use or talk to or just cosmetic stuff it all seemed to jell very nicely as far as i could see.
i would just like to say thanks for giving me the chance to test this update out and also in advance for giving us this new expansion to the game.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
the new romulan sub-faction is ace ive not found that meny bugs yet but i might do if i re-do missions n go off n have a good look around the ace new maps. all missions lvl to 21 are of a higher grade then at lest half of the missions on holodeck.
ill get the starter pack this week if its sale does not end before thursday uk time.
Welcome to bugs online were we only fix the bugs you like, and will ignore the ones you hate. These are the voyages of the USS Farmville. Her 5 year mission is to boldly farm where everyone has farmed before.
For what it is worth, all the missions I've done so far are very nice. The story is well written and there is a good mix of objectives. It almost seems like Cryptic outsourced the story to professional short story writers. Clearly a step up over pretty much everything in game presently IMO.
If you are looking for an excellent PvE fleet consider: Omega Combat Division today.

Would be a great courtesy if all the major financial supporters of this game -- lifetime members and other -- were let in to the beta. The invitation alone would be meaningful.
Seeing as the Romulans will have a C-store ship option for both T1 and T2 they actually have more varied content than us in the KDF  (science ships excluded)

Yeah the story driven missions are a real, cutscene-rich improvement over "Go there, shoot stuff" missions.
Imagine if all fed missions were like Doomsday device, and all KDF missions like Alpha (The hirogen one in the jungle?)
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.
I've been testing the new content and have got my Romulan tactical officer to Subcommander and have completed all the story missions available and I have to say that I am quite impressed by both the quality and variety of the missions when compared with what is already in the game currently on holodeck.
***Sausages for All*** Federation - Mirel II, Tala Lyleh sh'Ezlem, Vro'kul, Jahrel, Giweatu, Jhrol th'Ezlem, Katariina Rebane, Eleftheria Palaiologou, Surel, Saimon, TheEfficientSaurian KDF -Mirel I, Anirez Norai, Talash Romulans - T'Lara, Makath 'The Needle' Ayailat, Mirel III
I am excited to play the new content, though I haven't been invited yet. I like the quality of life upgrades to the ui on tribble though, glad to see that perfect world isn't just focusing on cramming in a new faction.
"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
I have had an invite for the closed Beta - thanks btw - and have thoroughly enjoyed playing the story missions so far. (I have reached Centurion 5 to this point.) I loved the tutorial in particular for the story line. I loved the cut scenes involving the new enemy ship which attacks the colony, and the cut scene with the reveal for the T'liss warbird.
This has really raised the bar in terms of writing standards for Star Trek Online. Cant wait to play the rest of the content and get behind the wheel of that D'deridex.
Also, worth noting that this does "feel" like a totally separate faction, despite having to ally with the Federation or Klingon Empire.
Of course Romulans will have less ships at launch, they have a "free" ship we havent seen its stats at T5 but that is not really that diferent from KDF that only have 4 or even Fed that have 6.
KDF players get a choice between a BoP, a raptor, a battle-cruiser, and a carrier. Four free ships, for four different playing styles.
Fed players get a choice between two escorts, two cruisers, and two science vessels. Not only do they get a choice between three different styles, but also a choice of secondary focus in each of those styles.
Romulans get one, which judging from Romulan ship progression prior is a dreadnought. No choice, one style -- the style, mind you, which is the least popular among the player base.
"Not really that different"? Yeah, if you believe that, I'm Mary, Queen of Scots and I have some great beachfront property in Montana to sell you.
Somebody getting uppity about canon? No problem! Just take a deep breath, and repeat after me:
Okay, so I bought the legacy pack, BUT unfortunately I can't test as I haven't gotten an invite yet.
If I may make a suggestion, I would suggest you include beta testing as a perk of buying the Legacy Pack.
I think that would be kinda a nice idea for those that drop the change in advance.
You can't use the items from the packs in the Beta 1 Testing...
They will apparently be available when it goes live to Holodeck.
STO Member since February 2009. I Was A Trekkie Before It Was Cool ... Sept. 8th, 1966 ... Not To Mention Before Most Folks Around Here Were Born! Forever a STO Veteran-Minion
Luckily seemed to have gotten an invite ( no email but allowed to make romulan char it seems)
Not played STO for a year, cameback for LOR
Little dilemma tho, not sure if its worth testing now only to spoil it for me when it comes out for real:/ - are their test rewards for this other seasons before?
About the invites, it is my understanding that they were sent to people which have been previously active in testing. For example, I and a few others I know that have been invited have been doing testing since the start - continuously.
For what it is worth, I think LtS people should have been invited as a matter of practice but I'm not running Cryptic sadly....
Anyway, The tutorial is likely in a class by itself and I do not state that as a token expression. To date with over four decades of video game playing under my belt equating to countless tutorials, this is the first one I've ever played in which I found myself wondering 'when does the tutorial begin?' It is fluid play, solid mechanics and progresses at a consistent pace with a climatic ending worthy of your time to say the least.

Well done Cryptic, keep up the good work.
And being a lifetime member thats a slap in the face.

There's a few people raging as expected, but there are a lot of people talking about how awesome the expansion is too.
