Hey gang!
As part of our ongoing testing of our new XMPP feature, we are now enabling Star Trek Online's Tribble users to make use of the feature!
NOTE: You must be a Gold Member to be able to use this feature.
I've been using this for quite sometime now, and have been having a blast with it! Right now, this feature is only in beta, as such, it's possible that there could be frequent outages, or unplanned maintenance could be performed at any given time, so please bear with us, and pardon our dust, this feature is still in its BETA phase.
Below, you'll find the instructions for how to connect to our in-game chat server using Pidgin, which is the IM client we use here at Cryptic, however, this should also work using Trillian, or any other client which supports XMPP chat.
We will be keeping an eye on this thread to gather your feedback, and will be working with you to help ensure that the experience improves and is nice and stable for when we enable this functionality for all our users.
If you're not currently signed up for Tribble, and wish to check this feature out, you can sign up for Tribble
here.
If you have any feedback, or questions about this feature, please leave it in this thread so that we can find it easily!
Thanks,
Stormshade

FAQ
Q: Why can't I see my friends?
A: In Pidgin your offline friends do not show up by default. To make them show, choose Buddies -> Show -> Offline Buddies
Q: Why does my account name show up in chat instead of my handle name?
A: Some clients, such as Trillian, show your account name in your chat window, but other users will see your handle name.
Comments
You say it's a IM program so I'm guessing I have to look for it externally, outside of the STO website right, so is it best to just Google it or is it linked into the site some where?
I read your entire post, I'm only realy familiar with MSN and Xfire, so I honestly thought the first place I look is "My Account" on the frontpage of the STO website, but I guess not.
EDIT: Is this what we need to download?
http://www.pidgin.im/download/
connection manager (preferences - identities and connections): add new connection
choose Jabber/XMPP
first spot: <your account name>@CrypticSpace.com
second spot: <your account password>
note: to have yourself shown by another name other than your default computer name, go to settings, Connection. under XMPP check the box saying "Override default resource name with:" and put whatever you want your name to show as in the box.
to join channels right click the purple jabber icon and select either "browse for confrences" or " join a conference"
Issue/notes:
Automatically everyone on my in-game friends list AND my fleet showed on my offline contacts list. However; they are alll showing up twice since all of my fleet is also on my friends list (easier to invite to team from friends list than from fleet list).
Very nice so far I will be testing this, so far a great addition for a Fleet Admiral.
Much like mXo when WB still owned it and used AIM as an ingame chat client. Bravo I say!
tlhInganmaH!
will we be able to join channels like TTS or the pvp in game channels?
EDIT: Answer is YES! wooot.
much prefer connecting to those channels from my IM client than trying to monitor them in game.
wish I had this option for other MMOs.
Yes that is it... is is one of the most popular multi framework opensource IM clients around... it used to be called GAIM before AOL sued to change the name.
And my CO account has been cancelled for over 3 months now.
1. With Adium in the foreground, go to File -> Add Account -> Jabber
2. On the Account page, put your game username ID as the Jabber ID. Password is your game login password.
3. On the Options page, put CrypticSpace.com in the field for Connect Server. Resource can be whatever you desire (XMPP/Jabber supports multiple simultaneous logins; The Resource ID dictates which login gets which message.)
4. Click OK.
Enjoy!
I'm able to send whispers to my fleetmates individually, but I don't seem to be able to join the actual channel. However, I believe that this is the limitation of the client itself. My IRC app doesn't seem to support XMPP (anyone know of one that does for Android?).
This is limited to Tribble users only, not just to Tribble. What this does is allow a user with an XMPP client (such as Pidgin, Trillian, Jabber, etc.) to connect to our global chat server and be able to talk to their in-game friends while they are not in game.
Right now, this feature is only available to users of the Public Test Servers of Champions Online and Star Trek Online. In the future, everyone will be able to use this feature regardless of wheter or not they have signed up to Tribble.
You can join any custom created channel using this protocol. I like to recommend joining community watch for users just looking to try it out. I can even be found in there from time to time!
Thanks,
Stormshade
One question though, if I am logged in on Pidgen, can players in game see that I am Online to chat to?
Turns out this is why we had our max channels bumped.
Can't join any chat channels and the only two chat channels that show up when I click "Room List", then click "Find Rooms" are my Fleet on Holodeck and the Tribble Testing Fleet, but I can't join either of them.
I can't seem to join Community Watch either, but maybe I'm doing something wrong, I don't know, but I do know I really like this IM program and the fact that I can chat to players while out of game.
service unavailable
doesnt seem to work for me atm.
Sorry to break it to you JCSWW, but this seems to only be for text chat from what I can tell from using the Pidgin IM client, but others may allow Voice Over IP, Pidgin may also but so far I can't find the feature if it does.
This is what I did and all you have to do is click on Buddies > Join a Chat...
Then look to the right of where the window states 'Server' and you should see 'guilds.crypticspace.com' and what you need to do is change the word 'guilds' to 'channels' so the text reads 'channels.crypticspace.com' and then...
Look to the right of where the window states room, you should see an empty space to type into, you can type in the room / channel name, such as tts or communitywatch (lower caps / no spaces).
Doesn't that just suck! We need some sort of voice chat.
On second thoughts, who's responsible for implementing this?
Ok I may forgive and understand why you disabled S2S connections.
I forgive you a little less for using ejabberd (if you do).
But still it's very nice!
Pidgin on Windows doesn't yet support Jingle (media P2P -- voice and video over XMPP), because it misses the necessary codecs that I'm aware of (as I know one of its developers/contributors).
Only XMPP client which supports Jingle on Windows is PSI atm.
