"similar" as in recruit only 1 friend and get an awful looking zebra type MOUNT with no special game-changing abilities.

STO version: recruit 5 friends, have them pay for a months subscription EACH, and get an entire SHIP with a special ability making it distinctively better than any other cruiser in the game.

now do you see the difference?

    Hardly......

So they are going to offer people rewards for furthering the player-base of the game, big deal, time to get over it because it's not going to change.

Much of the items in the C-Store are by the special request of the player-base, i.e. US, and they are offered in order to keep up interested in between content releases and bug fixes. They can't just add new missions for the game everytime they come out with a bridge pack or new Emotes as they wouldn't get their main goals done.

are YOU so blind that you can't see this?

Your information is out of date. The Zhevra is no longer available; it's a flying mount now. Furthermore, it increases your XP gains, and lets your friend grant you levels. That has a game effect. It allows you to summon each other. That has a game effect.

You are making a HUGE assumption about the power of that ship that is not supported by ANY evidence. All similar past items have fit in appropriate slots; if this weapon fits in a weapon slot and does less damage than a beam, it might actually make the ship weaker. You have no reason to believe it makes it "distinctively better".

The TOS Connie was marginally better for a few hours of play at the low end. Big whoop.

There's a whole threadnought on errors in the models in-game, from inappropriate time eras to details.

Basically, the complaints with the origina Galaxy model were:

    1) No front torpedo launchers accounted for on the model
    2) Warp pylons not being flush with the rear of the engineering hull (visible seam on the top)
    3) Incorrect nacelle placement
    4) Missing phaser strips

Sauer issues - well, it depends on which saucer you mean. The working miniature (depending on which model you're talking about - the 6-foot original model, or the 4-foot shooting miniature) had two different saucer configuration. Subtle differences, yes - such as the height of the saucer rim - but there nonethless.

Don't forget that lack of a Captain's yacht.

The implication I've gotten so far in this thread is that the T4-to-T5 upgrades mentioned would have some sort of special abilities. I really hope they don't come off as gimmicky; that was one of the things I disliked about ST:Armada and ST:BOTF. Phaser cannon would be okay, I imagine; a Corbomite Device? Yeeek...

How about everyone wait for the specifics before jumping to conclusions? No one outside the development team knows the full details of what this will be, so getting all worried about it when it may turn out to be nothing is kind of silly if you ask me.

Sorry, wasn't trying to come off as jumping to conclusions. Just expressing a hope that they don't go the one-gimmick-ship route. I'm not worried so much as jus' sayin'. =)

I wonder if one day all the made up junk will outweigh anything left that is remotely canon in this game.

Actually, it does have the bad-TRIBBLE phaser cannon on the underside of the saucer - it is a unique power that comes with the ship (ie not a weapon slot) and fires a narrow cylindor beam that (I believe) will be capable of hitting multiple targets.
That's a joke right? Your adding a weapon from an alternate time-line that Q obviously pulled out of hi... out of thin air as an actual in-game ability? Cosmetic TRIBBLE is one thing, but this is ridiculous.

I have absolutely no clue, syber. I'm not talking about WoW. I've never played WoW (with the exception of about a half hour in their trial, at which point I decided I'd never play it again).

That said, however, apparently WoW has the ability to do it because it's such a popular game. It's got to be popular for a reason. I don't know. Probably it has the five or six years of content to be able to sustain its 11.5 million subscribers, and have some of them refer friends who don't find it as mind-scrapingly dull and empty of content as STO.

Oh, and they only have to refer one friend.

That could be why. But I'm just guessing.

Well I don't want that either, but in my opinion this new era looks like so much TRIBBLE (visually)... so far.

For example, out of all the Cryptic specific Ship Designs I only sort of like one (Typhoon Battleship), and only few specific parts from customizable ships. I'm not saying my tastes speak for anyone but myself, but I've been disappointed that I haven't found much of anything likeable that is new is this era so far.

The 3-Nacelle Future Enterprise config will be an exclusive variant of a T5 Galaxy ship we are planning to add to the game as we increase the skillcap at various points in the future. In fact I see plans on the schedule to add T5 versions of the Galaxy, Intrepid, and Defiant class.

So yes - the Future Enterprise - 3 Nacelle config is an exclusive "variant" and may be the only T5 Galaxy for a while, but there will be ways to get similar ships in the future - they just might not have the 3rd Nacelle - or front mount single phaser cannon.

Heres an idea, how about you add that T5 Defiant, Galaxy and Intrepid that the ENTIRE playerbase can acquire before this exclusive deal, eh ?
Does this T5 Defiant come with a Cloak
Does the T5 Intrepid come with batmobile armor ?

I dont think so because these T5 ships are meant to be balanced within their own Tier thus mr. Exclusive Galaxy X gets an enhanced Phaser Split-Beam cannon power while everyone else gets nothing.

What about everyone else, what about people that want an exclusive Tactical ship or Exclusive Science vessel ?
Is it going to be a universal station ship to allow BOTH T5 specailties to be fully explored or is this going to be the first in a new T6 class ?

The latter just means those who get this offer will be in T6 cruisers before the rest of the playerbase can get them. I'm sure that wouldnt be a source of imbalance if perhaps a ship thats for RA10 is available for RA5s while everyone else is flying around in their current form.

Leaving aside the disgusting marketing practice being used here, its a stupid reward. Your only going to be able to take advantage of this reward to the FULL extent if:

Your an Engineer - Might change if they allow tradeable boffs that way you can get boffs with high skills from other professions.

Your a cruiser pilot - Escorts and Science pilots can get stuffed apparantly...

Your a Federation player - Sucks to be a Klingon, Romulan... [insert playabale race here]

At least the Tribble and Holo BO are UNIVERSAL rewards that everyone could use equally. This ship should be a C-Store item AT BEST or replace the captain's yaht as the Vet Reward. Along with 2 other special Vet Rewards for Science and Escort at the same time. That way EVERYONE benefits.

...you like the Typhoon? It looks like a tongue depressor, and then those weird kinda-clustered nacelles...

On the other hand, give me a Hope/Horizon hybrid any day, Space Whales are my friends, the Polaris is all spiky like it's got antennae everywhere, the Hephaestus is truly worthy of being named for the God of the Forge...

It's not just WoW. Most MMOs have some type of Referral Program. LotRO, Aion, DDO, and CoH, for example, give you 1 free month of play for each person you refer. WAR gives you 30 free days and pets and in-game items. EQ2 gives the 30 days and various free items. Referral Programs are extremely common in the industry and have nothing to do with the size of the fan-base. Ultimately every MMO wants more players whether it's WoW with its millions of subscribers or everyone else.

The fact that other MMOs pull stunts like this does not give everyone else a pass to try getting their players to participate in a pyramid scheme. it's still bad form, and overtly predatory on your customer base.

And the Galaxy Refit is pretty much the one 'canon' ship from the time period Cryptic's chosen that players have wanted since before launch. Restricting this ship to shills and spammers is something more like telling a WoW player that playing as an Elf is only unlocked through referrals (Or something outrageous like that. Never played Wow, don't care to learn about it). Or telling a SWG player that you unlock the Millenium Falcon through referrals.

I think far more people are interested in a T5 Galaxy, Intrepid, or Defiant refit then they are the once-used AGT Enterprise. YMMV

I think SpikeTV is running Voyager some nights really late. I was up pretty late last night and the first episode was on. I didn't watch it as much as TNG or even DS9 for that matter before but can't remember when it "jumped the shark" for me but I know it was during the first season.

It runs 2am Eastern on weekdays. I know for a fact because the internet/cable provider for the bulk of Kentucky and southern Indiana froze overnight at 2:35 am, and I had Spike on when I turned off my TV to go to work Saturday morning. They didn't get everything back online until 12:30 this afternoon.

Or Cryptic could stop nickle and diming every chance they get and actually come up with legitimate ways to keep players playing their game, like making it an STF reward or something (from the upcoming Terrordome?)

But I suppose that would be considered good game design, and they seem incapable of that.

I agree with your first point.

The just assume there's no other way than spamming new joins.

We still don't have clarification - other than everyone will be getting access to some T5 galaxy, intrepid, and defiant apparently.

I am going to repost this since it was lost rapidly:

First off, I'd like to apologize to dstahl if this has become a riot. That was not my intention, I didn't want this to become a full blown riot like the salegate fiasco was. Riots are bad for the game, as they get people quiting, and all I care about is improving the game. This was intended to be a petition, and if you guys can't keep the posts civil, please leave the thread.

Now, let me gets this straight. The AGT Galaxy will have a unique power? What happened to the previous statement about exclusives not having lasting affects on gameplay. You said this back when people were worried about the effects preorder exclusives would have. At least those were low tier items that weren't useful at the higher levels, this is an end-game ship, where players spend most of their time. How is this power supposed to balance in PvP without becoming unfair? This was bad enough when an elite group of players were getting an aesthetic skin. Now they're getting unique powers?

Also, the statement about T5 versions of the Tier 4 ships is both exciting and disheartining. Though I'm happy to see lower tier ships made available at higher tiers, I had hoped for a full blown refit system, instead of just one tier getting bumped up.

Thanks for the quick response dstahl, and thinks for shedding some light on this mystery.

Unique mechanics don't mean game-breaking ones - which is what they're trying to avoid, if I understand them correctly.

For example, a Tactical Turret (from Steam Preorders) can use a tactical slot.

However, you get better DPS by having other items there in the long run.

We can only react to what's been put in front of us. If someone wants to come by and correct or clarify what's implied on the Referral page, that'd be a good idea. At the moment, however, all we have is DStahl saying that there will be an upgraded Galaxy at some vauge future point in history, but that it will not be the All Good Things refit.

I'm not opposed to Cryptic marketing the game or finding creative ways to bolster subscriptions. However, getting 5 friends to subscribe is impossible for some people including myself.

As a fan of all canon ships, I'm very disappointed that you saved one of the coolest for this latest marketing strategy. You're basically asking us go out and sell STO door to door. Some of us have already done this with buddy keys. And some of us don't have friends who are into Star Trek or even computers. You locked us out by default.

Buying the Galaxy X-Class for 8000 Cryptic Points is more plausible than trying to get 5 subs. Please please, offer alternate methods of getting this ship.
