Also an important note, as this really offers nothing to those players who are Klingons only. Something that has been somewhat ignored up to this point.
Im just glad management is aware perhaps this means something will be done........
They've been aware of the problems with the skill cap, the lack of 'kill everything in sight' missions, the lack of general content, the lack of any Klingon content since before launch. Being 'aware' of the issue isn't anything to tack your hopes to.
Specifics would be. Instead, management's decison seems to be to start corraling the 'feedback' on issues like these to subforums where it won't scare off people from general discussion...
How did the thread fall off this much? Keep the fight alive. I can only get on once a day now since my PSU died in my main computer, and looking through today's posts, I saw no good news about this program. All I saw was a screen of the ship that just makes me sad since I won't be ale to fly it. I intend to never give up when it comes to fighting this terrible marketing decision. Stand strong everyone.
Oh no.. is this about the Galaxy X? I'm assuming yes...
Well... if its any consolation... I've made a huge stink about the Galaxy X threads in internal meetings and have even talked directly to the the CEO John personally about it and for now it remains an exclusive reward for the challenging task of recruiting 5 friends.
From talking personally with the ship designer - I've been trying to express that other similar ships are intended to become available in game as part of the next "tier" unlock at level 51. (considering you get ships at each rank - the plan would be that there is a new set of ships coming whenever they raise the cap to the next tier)
And honestly - person to person - if I didn't have a few laughs while reading these boards - I'd be super depressed from reading some of the anger people direct at the STO team's work. I understand - but agree I should be more serious sometimes
I've heard a rumor that the referral program was intended for players who love playing STO in the hopes that they would have a cool incentive to share their love of the game with their friends. The more subscriptions the game has - the more headcount we can support and the more headcount we can support the more content I can plan for in each update. So I personally, am all for the referral program.
I don't think it was intended to be a "one time cash" bump. That really doesn't get us much. What helps is when more and more people play over time. If the Galaxy X gets more of that - then I'm personally all for it.
It's over. The decision has been made, and finalized. The community has lost on this one.
Wait... so the uplift refits are coming some time way past Season 2 when the level cap will actually go above 50? So there's no chance whatsoever that the unique mechanics assosciated with the Galaxy-X (minimally the forward laser) are going to actually be coming into the game alongside it?
What's done is done. Time for the community to focus it's efforts onto the next battle. We shall see what becomes of this in the coming months.
LOL, its not done at all. Just because the program starts tomorrow doesnt mean people have to stop asking for the ship to be added to the C-store or through some other means. The "battle" can last as long as people want the ship
But apparently the CEO of Cryptic said no, so that's the final word on the subject for now. I'm sure the ship will be added to the c-store at somepoint, but I have a feeling that it's not going to be added during this month, or the next month, or the next six months, or even the next year. It's going to be a long time before this ship end up in the c-store unofrtunately.
Realistically at this point the energies of the community would be better spent on other topics for a while, like the lack of content the Klingons currently have and making suggestions about that, or even propose content to cryptic about the upcoming Romulan Faction.
It's over. The decision has been made, and finalized. The community has lost on this one.
I will continue to fight it any way possible. It's sad that they'd do this to themselves, it's going to come back to haunt them eventually. People may not quit this game over it, but I for one will be boycotting all future Cryptic games if this foolish decision isn't remedied before it's too late.
This needs to be put in as next week's poll. When management make decisions this controversial, they need to take the final decision to the people.
They've claimed that their new business model is to go to the fans to see what they want in the game, but it seems they will bend their own policies at will when it serves them. This annoys me greatly. It's a bad sign when many of the most respected forum members, and those that were pro-Cryptic, stop liking their decisions.
This isn't enough to make me quit this game, but the company has lost one fan today.
I seem to have missed this information. What is the source?
**edit**
I found the post that mentions the CEO, though it didnt actually say he said "no". It just said "for now it will be exclusive". So basically we'll get it another way eventually

We shall see shik. I'm not happy about this decision either, and I wasn't planning on buying any other cryptic games to begin with. So I'll be wary of what Cryptic is up to in the future.
What really pushes my buttons the wrong way now is the fact that an elite group of players will be getting unique gameplay mechanics that will make the game unfair for others. Terrible decision Cryptic. Before this, I had thought Cryptic's CEO was a nice guy, since he was one of the two main people at Cryptic fighting for Open PvP zones, but now, I've lost all faith in him, and if Cryptic were democratic at all, I'd probably call for his impeachment over this.
I wouldn't say the community lost today. i'd say Cryptic lost hundreds of subscribers if this is their attitude.
I'm out, no really, that's it. i'm over this. My subscription will burn out and not be renewed, and i'll be encouraging what few friends i have left playing this game to do the same thing.
It's not about the ship, the ship is just the latest problem here. And it's done.

Unfortunately cryptic is a business and as a business the CEO John has to do what he thinks is in the best interests of the company. To do otherwise would be unethical on his part. We may not like it, or even care for it, but that is what it is. I still think he is a nice guy, I just think he had to make a tough choice.
I honestly didn't want to do this, and have done everything I can to avoid this becoming a riot. I personally thought the salegate rioters were fools for making a mountain out of a mole hill, but this is in a whole league of it's own. Unique gameplay mechanics going to a group of elite players. I will try to make sure this doesn't end up being a riot, and though this decision could cause one, it may be the only option left available to us.
I may be contacting media outlets, just as the salegaters did. Doing that was what caused Cryptic marketing and Atari to remedy their mistakes during the salegate fiasco. Letting the media find out about them giving unique, unbalanced, gameplay mechanics away to an elite group could hurt their image enough for them to fix the mistake. I really don't want to do that to them, as they are already struggling with their image, but they've left me no choice. I give them 2 days to fix the problem on their own before I go public with it. I'd really hate to have to do that. Please reconsider your decision.

Cryptic is not going to change their minds at this point, and certainly not in two days. In a few months to a year maybe but for now the decision has been made.

I'm having difficulty actually internalizing this. Especially with the new clarifications by dstahl which I hope are a massively confused error. If the ships mentioned that the Galaxy-X is supposed to be similar to mechanically are really a tier higher than what we have in-game now rahter than a diversification, and for level 51+ which is on a time horizon past Season 2...
Again, I hope there was major miscommunication because this does NOT compute.

It would also be unethical to make his company reverse promised policies.
But he was at Arthur Anderson before SOE, so why am I surprised?

It would be more unethical for him to break his oath as CEO of the company if he didn't do everything in his power to make as much profit as possible. He's stuck in between a rock and a hard place and I don't envy him.
So, Cryptic is never allowed to reward anyone in the game with anything for anything unless they give it to every subscriber for free? Really?
So players who master the hardest content in the game shouldn't get items that people who play one hour a week don't?
People who are loyal to the game and subscribe for a long time shouldn't get any reward in return?
People who go out and spread the word about the game, bringing in more subscribers WHICH BENEFITS EVERY SINGLE PERSON PLAYING THE GAME by way of increased revenues and development resources....
....these people can't have a pretty ship?
This community, seriously, is the worst bunch of whining, entitled casuals ever.
I thought WoW couldn't be surpassed in that category, but it has.

So... misleading people is fine for the sake of profit?
The issue is about much more than a pretty ship at this point. Well, I think it's an ugly ship but that's immaterial.
Imagine if WoW gave away some set of leet raid armor for referrals instead of a taxi.
According to the devs, the Galaxy-X is getting unique game mechanics behind it, including the centerline laser and possibly a cloaking device.
It was further described as being similar to a new batch of ships that is being cooked up... which were later described as being for level 51+ instead of just diversifying the current Admiral batch. Season 2 is only unlocking to 50.
So right now the indications are this will be pretty damn 'uber'.

So you think giving unique gameplay mechanics to an elite group of players is ok? I'm all for rewarding those that bring in new subscribers. But why are C-points not enough. Why make it a 5 referral reward so barely anyone can get it (when no other MMO asks for so many referrls to unlock something)? Why give an elite group of Federation players cloaking abilities and a unique canon no one else can get. All new gameplay mechanics just to reward a lucky few. All this just promotes jealousy, as this elite group is sure to act like they're better than others, just as many lifers did when the blue name fiasco happened. It is entirely against Star Trek philosophies .
This isn't about us being mad that a pretty ship is being given as a reward to an elite group of players. It goes far deeper than that.
I see once more that STO is efficiently pulling in all of the flack that usual Star Trek properties do, as fans who erroneously think they OWN the property start demanding this and boycotting this and blah blah blah.
So what if you ASKED for the Galaxy X? You think they NEEDED you to ask for it? They saw the episode, too. And even if they did run off your requests, who are you to say that they can't offer it as a special program to help bring other players to the game?
The other thing that strikes me is that every single person who is complaining about this and the (current) need to recruit other players in order to get this ship seems to think that their life is over, and they'll never be meeting any other people for the rest of their lives that might like to play a video game called STO. You don't have to have the ship in 2 months, people. Slow it down. Work on it for a few years. Try to find someone who might be interested every 6 months or so.
I don't recall anyone saying that the program is going away or is only for a limited time. Did I miss that somewhere? It does say "while supplies last", but we have no idea how many they have set to be available. Obviously the faster you can get those 5 people who will resubscribe the better, but what the hell? Wait a month or two until episode replay is in and Season 2 is in (or even Season 3) and then try to tell a few friends.
And if you think the game is so horrid that you don't want to recommend it to anyone, what makes you think you deserve a Galaxy X in the first place?
