Most of those decisions were based on directives from Lucas Arts.
Don't expect TOR to end differently. They've already made obscenely similar statements to the old LA QQ about WoW: TOR claims they need 1 million subs.
Good luck with that.
Yes, and? Who cares who made the decision, the results were the same.
TOR may fail, it may not. That's besides the point.
Put a poll with a link from the launcher to it and a link to the referral page so people know exactly what the deal is.
Q: Should the Galaxy-X be exclusive only to the referal system or be availabe via the C-Store?
A) Referal Only C-Store Only
C) Both
Going to happen, nope because we all know Cryptic only listens to its playerbase when it benefits them. Despite of course claiming they want to make a game that people want to play and listen to their players in doing so.
the thing i don't get is, what's the big deal?if you really wanted the galaxy class you'd give forth the effort to get it. sitting and complaining about it being to hard to get just shows how little you're really interested in it.
personally i think it'd be more rewarding and you'd feel better about yourself if you convince 5 friends to join, think of the people you get to play with.

if cryptic doesn't listen, why are you bothering to waste energy pointing out the aren't listening? isn't that redundant?
Complete assumption on your part. The fact is, regardless of the reason, Blizzard started a referral program when they actually had a solid game to refer people to.
Also, the "encourage a friend to try the product you have" is not a new concept.
You completely missed the point of what I said. You'd been saying that Blizzard waited to begin a referral program, but I countered saying that they were the first to use a program that was based on a "recruit and reward" system as the one Cryptic will be using. You come back at me saying that it doesn't matter because they had a finished game that was several years into use.
Turn back the cloak and ask yourself if Blizzard would have started up a recruit and reward program for WoW several months after it's initial release, and the answer is they probably would have as it works. A huge number of people complained when Blizzard opened their own store and started selling in-game items on it, but that didn't stop people from spending millions to get the celestial mount did it?
lets make things far from an economical point of view, the 5 friends referal costs roughly $15x 5 (usd)
so that's $75 and lets say it's $7 for 500 points (roughly) soo... 75/7 = 10.7... or 11...
11x500 = 5,500 =o
ssooo, lets make the galaxy class a c-store item, but so the same ammount of money is paid weither we buy it as a c-store item or get 5 friends to pay a 1 month subscription, lets make it cost 5,500 c-store points to get >_>;
seems fair, right?
but wait! =o
if you refer 5 friends you also get 400 free C-store points, soo, we can apply this aswell..
400x5 =2000
5,500 - 2000 = 3,500
so lets make the galaxy class worth 3,500 points ^_^ (instead of giving you bonus points for purchasing the ship (like you would with a friend referal) the points are applied as a discount towards the ship instead :P.
thoughts? ideas? would you really pay 3500 points just to have ship skin?
Regular Galaxies have none of the gameplay features the X have. So no.
Considering the insane debates that took place months before release between which should be on top (the Galaxy or Sovereign), he's got a reasonably point. It won't be the exact same, but there were/are a significant number of people on these forums that wanted the Galaxy to be T5 and the Sovereign to be T4.

Whether they deliberately waited or not, the point is that it was started at a point where the game could stand up on it's own.
STO is not doing the same.
Yeah, it will reduce the rage... in the MONTHS it takes for them to come out with it while this Galaxy-X will be out by the end of this month.
This ship is the first in a new generation of T5 vessels. This is not just a ****ing reskin of a T5, its a brand new T5 with new stats AND new powers attached. The rest of the playerbase dont get THEIR next generation ships until later... I.E the regular galaxy, Defiant and Intrepid.
Players get something that is better than everyone else with new powers and no equivelent match... oh look unbalance.
That's good news, dstahl! Hopefully they'll see that we really want this ship in a different way, other than getting our friends to play the game.
Also: Can this ship go Warp 13 like it can in the episode? Would that mean slightly faster travel times in Sector Space? Because taht would be amazing.

The part that says that Cryptic is comfortable enough to risk their company and the game's future on this doesn't say anything to you? It doesn't give you the slightest hint of faith that Cryptic is getting to a point where they feel they can really start bringing people back to the game and attracting new players altogether?
Well, I have no chance of getting two people to subscribe, let alone five. (In fact, I don't know anybody who's currently interested in trying out the game.) So no Galaxy X for me. Fortunately I'm not enough of a Star Trek fan to care about that, but it does seem odd to tie an apparently popular item like that to such nasty qualification conditions.
Hope springs eternal that maybe they just might listen.
This entire forum is filled with redundancy, so why care about it now, eh ?
i just popped in now, and i care about it for the opposite reason then the forum >_> i'm FOR the referal only. it brings in more revenue/development costs for content then having it in the c-store (unless you apply my theory from my previous post)
i also like the idea of playing with friends and i refer friends all the time regardless of if there is a program or not, i see the referal program as a bonus for my efforts/desire to play with my friends >_>
i'm happy either way if i get the galaxy or not, and chances are i won't even use it =/

This misses the point entirely.
1) Referral is difficult.
2) Difficult deserves Reward (exclusive)
The issue seems to be this: People are ****ed the reward is the Galaxy-X. PERIOD.
If it was something like the pre-order tribble - something they had but "cooler" and exclusive, no one would bat an eye.
What do I think?
Swap the rewards.
1) 1 person = Galaxy-X model, NON FUNCTIONING.
2) 5 people = Photonic BO (with the same level of BOff coolness as the Borg one - Maybe a science off, Superior Astrophysics and a 4m use Photonic officer ability)
Then, make photonic officers available through an STF (or whatever) who do NOT have the same level of cool, but still have cool (give them one of the abilities, not both), and throw in the top-tier FUNCTIONING Galaxy-X for all through whatever is determined to be the best way to attain it.
If you're still in a tizzy, I cant help you. Exclusive rewards for support, dedication and effort are important, but must be tempered by remaining an exclusive VARIANT. If someone still has a "I deserve this despite no effort" attitude, I simply cannot be bothered to placate someone at that point.
I'm only here and grumpy because there is a dangerous overtone against exclusive reward.
Have your Galaxy-X, give me something (slightly) cooler and entirely exclusive and we both walk away happy.

the ship was shown once for 5 minutes in a single episode... i don't see how/why it's so popular other then people just want a teir 5 galaxy ship because they #1, don't want to fly a tier 4 ship as a RA5, and #2 are narcasitic and just want to look cool, without sacrificing states/weapon slots to do it. or rather hey want all of the good things with none of the side effects.
1) Referral is difficult.

only 1 flaw in your reasoning... if the 5 friend referal was for the photonic BO then people would be complaining about the photonic bo to get and should not be a "referal" only...
difficult deserves reward but the reward needs to be equal to the difficulty, the only way people would not complain about "exclusive" content is to make the content either a)none exclusive, which basicly makes the effort of recruiting pointless since there is an easyer way to get the reward. which would you rather, play hard mode to get reward, or play easy mode to get identical reward? not a hard decision. or b) something nobody really cares about or, to put it simply, a crappy reward that in no way comes close to the difficulty/effort given.
If they want to make referrals interesting they dont have to put the AGT out for it. They could put the Captains table, pre-order bonus, liberated borg, uniform sets and vet bonus rewards and shuffle it up so each person brought in gets the recruiter a reward. Thus there is a continual reward to the recruiter with an entire slew of benefits that have more chance of being useful.
Put the ship on the C-Store for 1000C or something and they get revenue from both the referral system and the C-Store.
Do this and you have provided those that wanted Pre-order items / liberated Borg / Captains Yaht / Captains Table / Character slots / Uniforms a means to get them and get money from those that wanted the Galaxy-X from the C-store.
Hell, put the Galaxy-X in the referral program, just put it in the C-Store as well. That way the bonus of referring is you get all that stuff IN BULK at a discount rather than having to get them all individually.
That way the Referral program actually appeals to EVERYONE rather than just those that want a single ship design. While they may be a considerable amount of people that want that ship those that dont want it wont be interested and thus have no reason to participate.
If Cryptic is looking to fleece their playerbase out of the most money AND get subscribers the referral system should be attempting to offer rewards than would entice EVERYONE to participate.
The part that says that Cryptic is comfortable enough to risk their company and the game's future on this doesn't say anything to you? They're greedy enough, they're looking at short term profit over long term establishment.
if the 5 friend referal was for the photonic BO then people would be complaining about the photonic bo to get and should not be a "referal" only
You're both right, people are irritated that they have to get off their asses and work to get the exclusive reward. After all, we're all nerds at our computers

I have repeatedly said I'm okay with the holographic officer, as are a lot of people.

In all fairness, Cryptic did put the Council on hold according to the interview on STOked due to the negative feedback that it got.
personally i think it'd be more rewarding and you'd feel better about yourself if you convince 5 friends to join, think of the people you get to play with.

Cryptic has proved that they will listen if theres a big enough outcry from the community, like with the 90-day thingie that blw up in their face.
