My changing of Sivar's post was in response to that post being the typical "Cryptic is doing fine" spiel that is simply not true.
I read the points of the pro-Galaxy X referral people and counter every one, meanwhile you sit there complaining about people being angry with it.
Tough. It's a bad decision. We have every right to be appalled.
I'm just as angry as you are about this who situation. I'm just trying to see both sides of the issue here with a level head.
The problem here is that, and this happens on both sides, is that when they counter your points, you counter them with the exact same points that were given to counter them in the first place. The other problem is that when they other side counters your points they counter them with the exact same point that they first used. Egro both sides not listening to each other.
And you know what else? I have every right to be just as appalled by this whole situation and the conduct of everyone involved, myself included. You don't like that? Tough.
I said this in my previous post.....I've rarely seen a more boneheaded marketing department than Ive seen here with Cryptic.
Cryptic.....Your Marketing Departments schemes are driving people away! You need to drive your Marketing Department away! They are counter productive! They FAIL almost every week, with almost every idea!!
Wonder if putting in a complaint to CBS about STO violating canon by the inclusion of a NON-existant ship class from a non-canon timeline would solve this situation...
Get the Galaxy-X removed completely = Everyone is equal....
...Everyone is ticked off even more. Since everyone wants that ship. Suddenly having the opportunity to acquire it it being snatch away is only going to make matters worse.
...Everyone is ticked off even more. Since everyone wants that ship. Suddenly having the opportunity to acquire it it being snatch away is only going to make matters worse.
The opportunity is nonexistant to a lot of us.
It would be extremely petty, and unlikely to work since they greenlit the Olympic which has never been seen in the "real" timeline either.

The USS Nobel, Olympic Class starship, served during the dominion war.
This Referral Program including the ATG-Galaxy not only is a marketing mess. It also divides the community and makes the active playerbase fighting each other at personal levels.
The simple fact it causes critical discussions in dimensions like this proves the program to be a horrible concept and contra-productive. Did anybody within Cryptic ever think about the concequences of offering REWARDS LIKE THIS before announcing it?
What do you think is a new players impression when he visitss the forums the first time looking for help?

These forums were filled with Cryptic hate and 'STO is dead' posts long before the RAF program was announced. So nothing there has really changed.
I can see the Warship Voyager stuff being a C-Store thing or something they never include, as it was a fictional depiction of Voyager anyway.
I think the uber-exclusive Voyager counterpart would be this.
To be completely honest and logical, every Federation Starship should have Ablative generators by 2409 after the USS Voyager NCC-74656 brought the technology back with them in 2378.
Also, yeas the "Warship Voyager" was fictional, but we are in a time of war with not only the Klingons to deal with, but the Borg, the Undine, the Romulans, the Dominion and many more, so don't you think it's about time Starfleet started fitting the "big guns" to the new Starships on the line?
We should be able to park our Starships in a Drydock facility at Sol or go to the Jupiter Ship Yards and refit our Starships with al kinds of crazy but canon stuff from the show, including Borg enhancements from salvaged Borg components, Alblative generators, new weapons like the cannons from the "Warship Voyager" and the Galaxy-X.
We should also be able to upgrade Bridge Stations, upgrade hull strength but that would need to be limited and balanced. I'm sure there's much more we could do with a "refit" feature, but I think I made my point.

Oh really? Cause I see people who have been long time supporters of Cryptic angered by this, and people who've genuinely tried to tough it out and give positive feedback say they'll quit over it.
Some people genuinely think that because people have complained befrore, Cryptic can do whatever they like. Because we're all malcontents anyway, right?

Cryptic can do what they like, because it's their business, and their game. While they CAN listen to player feedback and suggestions, they are not required to, nor are they required to make any changes the small subset of players that post on the forums demand.

The exact same argument I heard with regards to SWG so many times.
History repeats itself because nobody remembers our mistakes.
Here's My problem with this whole thing (and no i did'nt read every post so there may be something about it already) I dont play Fed i stopped when i hit Lt6 cause i wanted to play klingon... So is there going to be a Klingon ship i can get for referring 5 people cause other wise this completely pointless for me to refer people seeing because i dont play fed i dont get a cool new ship... Already breaking canon with the Galaxy X ship so why cant ya make from scratch a kickass new Klingon ship for doing the same thing.

And SWG is still around, and still has enough subscribers to hit whatever goal SOE has for them. Besides, trying to compare a RAF reward to NGE is disingenuous, one is a ship for a RAF reward, one redid the bulk of the game.

SWG is a shambling zombie with a minute playerbase. Lucasarts is replacing it with TOR. When that comes out it'll finally be dead, unloved and not missed.
Do you really want that fate for STO? Years of shambling non-existance? Really?
And if you think the NGE alone undid SWG then you haven't done your research.
By the time of the NGE SWG was already teetering on the edge due to a litany of horrible decisions that alienated their players.
Sound familiar?

This is a valid concern with the RAF reward, if you don't play Fed at all, you can't use the 'big' reward. I'd like to see a Klingon equivalent reward as well.
dstahl, just a suggestion here as I kind of agree that the Galaxy-X should be difficult to get as it's from an alternate timeline, but getting 5 to subscribe for one whole month does seem a little bit much, how about 3 or 4 friends?
Also, if you're going to make the ship this difficult to get a hold of, please make sure that it will be able to Saucer Separate in Combat and Out-of-Combat and that's like a demand or something, but I have no hostages. LoL
I've never demanded anything from the Devs before, but you're going to have to make this Galaxy-X so totally worth it, if you're going to make it so difficult to attain and I know you can do it, this Starship won't be able to be customized like the rest right?
Which means you can make it Saucer Separate (In and out of combat) because it doesn't have to connect to any other in game ships right.
Lastly, maker sure the Galaxy-X gets more power to all systems by like 10 points or something because that 3rd Nacelle isn't stuck on her back just to make her look pretty, so overall, my point is, Devs if you're going to do this you're way, you better do it right (please).
Oh really? Cause I see people who have been long time supporters of Cryptic angered by this, and people who've genuinely tried to tough it out and give positive feedback say they'll quit over it.
Expendable seems to be talking about me. If you check my profile, I never felt to post in the forums about balance, lack of content or the usual complains. My fleet and me we just played and had fun. Until yesterday when we were informed about what is going to happen with the ship-model we already demanded in early beta polls!
I can assure you: I'm writing here in representation of my whole fleet of about 25 active German players, because my english language skills are good enough to translate our attitudes and translate Cryptics answers to my friends in Vent.
We were Crpytic fans since early days of CO Beta, we bought lifetime accounts and C-Store items even if we didn't need them. Just to have a "complete collection" of costumes and skins. We were the kind of crazy fanboys spending money for their fun. But with the new Referral Program we >all< feel cheated by Cryptic, because we have to recruit about 125 new players and additional subs to get everyone the ship skin we demanded in beta.
Cryptic boldy went were no one went before: Turning 25 loyal all-time-fans into 25 angry customers who just helplessly bring their mood to the forums before they leave the game in near future.
I know, not everybody is a fan of the Galaxy-X-model. For us, it's a gamebreaking feature not to have the opportunity to get it. The next wave will be the EXCELSIOR as a exclusive reward for NEW Lifetimer-Subscriptions. Followed by the NEBULA-model as exclusive in a new "platin"-edition-retail. You think I am overstating? Just wait 6 months and think of my words.
Alright, since management is aware of this thread...
Throwing my two cents in.
Short Comment: Make the ship non-exclusive to this referral program. Make it a C-store item, Vet reward, whatever.
Long Comment: We're in a really crappy economy right now. People are scrimping and saving more than ever. Star Trek Online is a very state-of-the-art MMO, and while my complaints with the game are nowhere near as exhaustive as others I've seen on the forums, one of the problems I did find is... it's -too- state of the art for some people. Mostly my own friends who are in the 18-28 demographic who simply do not have computers that are prepared to run a game like Star Trek Online. Most of my friends play older MMO's with less-advanced system requirements because they -cannot- afford a major system upgrade, and the subscription fees alone are a 'luxury' cost. To my friends? Me inviting them to Star Trek Online might be a nice gesture or gift... but the fact of the matter is, their computers are simply not up to the task of playing a game like this. Is that their fault? Well, sort of. But if the games they play have less of a demand on their computer, then there's no real reason to upgrade, thus save money, thus make long-term subscription more feasible. I have exactly ONE person positively identified into letting me invite/refer them to STO. And he has an up-to-date computer and plenty of MMO experience. I have maybe twenty other friends online with 'gaming' computers. None of them advanced enough to run STO without serious performance issues. But for the games they play? They work just fine. This is not a dig at Cryptic, Atari, CBS, whatever. I personally love the fact it requires such an advanced rig to run. But when you get right down to it, everyone's friends are different. They may not devote as much income into their computers as the current subscribers do. For them... they wouldn't just be paying for a subscription. They'd also be paying for the game. And in some cases... major hardware or in some cases, a completely new computer in order to run the game. All of these things are factored into an economy where people by in large are running short on cash, at least in my area. Referral programs are not BAD, or anything. But I think marketing should take another look outside the window, and realize this is not a few years ago when people could -afford- to subscribe to multiple games, upgrade their systems regularly, etc., especially if their friends were all playing one type of MMO. This is 2010, the old marketing strategies may not be as effective as they used to be before the economy took a dive. And the playerbase of STO has every right to feel being pressured into being salesmen and pitching the game to friends and family they know may not have the money simply for a new bell and whistle for their own 'luxury' cost. Because honestly? And this is just me... I'd rather not pitch the game to a friend I know can't afford it (and any system upgrades or overhauls) simply for my own Galaxy-X class ship, but I know a lot of unscrupulous players -would-, and honestly... the cost of friendship is not worth an 'exclusive' or 'special' item. And I think Cryptic should be the 'better' company by not pressuring their players into thinking it's okay to sacrifice their own friendships for profits (for Cryptic) and a new toy (for the players).
SWG is a shambling zombie with a minute playerbase. Lucasarts is replacing it with TOR. When that comes out it'll finally be dead, unloved and not missed.

1player having fun to every 247 not happy with it.
.
Most forum communities for an MMO represent about 10% of their players in total.
The biggest reason someone posts on a forum, makes a comment on a page or sends an email is to complain
Ask yourself this - how many times in the last 12 months have you visited a company's website of a product you use (note: this includes soda, hair gel, sneakers, etc) to leave positive remarks. Now, how many times have you complained?
No forum represents the voice of the people. Only when you drill down out of the top layer forums into the specialized ones do you see players helping each other, discussing builds, tactics, etc.
The only thing I find here are those fanatically dedicated to themselves, or the game. Mostly the former.

Most of those decisions were based on directives from Lucas Arts.
Don't expect TOR to end differently. They've already made obscenely similar statements to the old LA QQ about WoW: TOR claims they need 1 million subs.
