Let's remember what episode it was in..
Oh yes: The last ever episode of TNG!
The one with an alternate time-line the Q Continuum created that no longer exists since Captain Picard passed their test (or whatever you want to call it), yippee.

Hey while they're seemingly adding things that don't exist in this games... reality, how about those future uniforms and combadges that were not only seen in the above mentioned last two episodes, but appeared in future during this time period on all 3 Star Trek TV shows.

Ooh what about that one episode where Worf was jumping around Quantum Realites, as I recall there was an interesting combadge or two in those realites.

The AGT uniforms, alternate combadges and other things like the "Yesterday's Enterprise" uniforms would be excellent additions to the c-store.
But Cryptic are so bent on shilling us wholesale that even the c-store isn't enough for them.

While that timeline no longer exists, its entirely plausible that the engineers who designed the refit could carry on a similar timeline and make the same designs.

Or what if Picard described it in his reports and Starfleet engineers were like "Ya know...that would be SWEET. Lets make it!"

Perfectly said. Why would it be so unbelievable for the Engineers to come up with this refit in the other reality?

Look at the new movie for example. The Enterprise of the Original series looks a little different then the New film however it was still created and made very similar. Im sure they could always say picard had a helping hand in the refits creation too, just for fun's sake.

The bummer about this, is that I've already gotten a few people to play this game, without any kind of referral. :/
I might be able to refer more, but I don't want to make work out of getting people to join. Why not have it be available on the c-store?

No offense but i wish people would stop asking for things to be put in the c-store. Why wouldnt you want it as a drop or something you can make IN THE GAME for Free? They can still make them super rare.

    WOW. Just WOW.

You not only make one of the most demanded ship-designs exclusive for players who get you profit of at least $200. You go one step further and make it a player's dream by granting it full functionality with the special weapon AND the cloaking ability shown in the TNG-episode.

    WOW!

So much designer's love for one ship which a huge bunch of players demanded.

Your marketing dudes love to play Russian roulette, do they? If this works, you will get a lot of wealthy players buying themselves 5 retails and subscribing them 1 month. If you are lucky, this will compensate the loyal players you lost due to your tactics...

    WOW!

I was a Cryptic Fanboy since CO beta and now I am just stunned.

I said this in my previous post.....I've rarely seen a more boneheaded marketing department than Ive seen here with Cryptic.

Cryptic.....Your Marketing Departments schemes are driving people away! You need to drive your Marketing Department away! They are counter productive! They FAIL almost every week, with almost every idea!!

    THEY "just don't get it"......

This. If a a couple of rich kids subbing 5 times is preferable to an established playerbase to these people, STO is going to sink to the bottom very, very fast.

Cryptic Suit #1: Not to worry! Our new pyramid sche.. er.. referral program will make up the lost subscribers! Bunch of malcontents anyway!

    Cryptic Suit #2: Too right!

Cryptic Suit #3: We'll be printing money!

Cryptic Suit #4: But the players we lose were willing to stick with it for the long haul before this and believed in the game. These new subbers will either be some rich kid buying multiple subs for one month or people pressured into subbing for one month by an overly eager referrer. Sure our investors will be pleased temporarily, but most of those subs won't last and we'll be in a worse situation than we are now.

Perhaps we should concentrate on making the game appeal to new subscribers on it's own merits! Who's with me!

WoW requries less subs for "prizes".
WoW has a million different mounts and a myriad of ways to get them.
WoW is bigger and more established; they can get away with things STO can't.
Mounts don't affect gameplay like "the first of a new generation of t5s" would.

But please, continue to blindly support this pyramid scheme. I'm sure Cryptic will thank you for it next year when the servers shut down.

In looking through several threads about this I can only agree that this particular item should not be exclusive to the Referral Program. I'd be ok with a Cryptic Created ship being used for this... or even another one of those "let the player's name it" sort of things... but not a ship most of us really do want but will never have access to because of how it's being implemented.

I can't imagine the Devs thinking this a good idea so I'll just focus my eyes, as a Dev said already, on the management. I think your workers probably have a better idea of what we want than you do... even though we understand that you're in it for the money. But this is not how to go about it in this case. One player's opinion anyway. :)

I still think that 5 subbers is far too much, it should reasonably be one or two subbers, or 5 ACTUAL REFERRALS (as in, bought the game, no sub).
Aside from that again I have no issue with the other prizes, of course there has to be an incentive. I'd love to have a holographic crewman but okay, let them have that. Let them have an exclusive Cryptic designed ship too.
But the Galaxy X? Not only an iconic design from a popular episode, but the first of a new brand of t5s? Under this kind of ridiculous exclusivity?

    No.

This is closer to reality than most of us would like to think.

Except I don't think there IS a voice of conscious in the room at all. Keep in mind this isn't the first or even second shotgun blast to the feet that marketing/management has made with STO.

Clearly they are incapable of learning from past mistakes and keep doubling down on them.

The big difference to Blizzard's Referral Program:

Blizzard made a game which wasn't finished in 2005.
They completed it and added lots of free stuff to the game for the next two years.
They made their players like the game so it was referred by them to their friends.
... and THEN they added rewards for the most loyal recruiters.

If Blizzard would have added a unique Armor Set only four months after WoW-release in exchange for recruiting 5 retails signing 5 additional subs, they would never been so successful. Because they would have lost the loyality of almost every rational player at once.

And that's exactly what is going on here.

    Wow... feel the hate.

I think at this point, the main reason I'm reluctant to bring people to STO is the fact that there are about two dozen loudmouths inciting riots on the forums who don't get moderated enough to keep from obscuring the constructive posters.

Someone pinch me when the team decides what unique thing the people who are so riled up to demand stuff for a game they refuse to support DON'T want that I'll be getting for supporting the game.

    I stand by my statement.

If you want a Reward, go recruit people.

If you don't think the game is worth recruiting to, then stop wasting my bandwith with your demands for devaluing exclusive rewards in a game you lack faith in.

My biggest gripe is not that those doing the Referral to get a new ship skin, but said ship gets special abilities that are not available to other federation ships of the same tier. If it was just the ship skin, and behaved like a tier 5 Cruiser in every other way, I would not have a issue with it. But having it have the cannon and maybe the cloaking device is to much for something that cannot be achieved in game.

But Cryptic can't win in this situation. They can't put it in the C-Store for the same reasons that having it in the referral program is not a good idea. If they make it a raid loot/achievement, then there will still be complaints about people not being able to get the new ship. I would just put it as a Season 2 ship for RA6-10, and add some snazzy Klingon ships to boot but I am sure that would cause some to complain too.

No he had it right the first time. That's really what this is about.

Nope. Sorry. It isn't. This isn't recruiting. This is selling.

Recruiting is: "Hey, do you want to try out this game? It's great."

Selling is: "Please buy this game and purchase a one month sub so I can get the shiny nobody else can have."

    Maybe this will happen.

If so, you should hope the new "recruited" customers compensate the losses. For me and my fleet, we will leave once this Referral Program goes live and the first Galaxy-X is seen ingame. We made this decision after a long discussion about it in Vent yesterday. Although I am a LTS and Cryptic wouldn't care much about me, there are at least five active subscription they lose within our fleet.

But maybe there are enough rich freaks to buy the retails and 1-months-subs so Cryptic will not care about the loss of a dozen loyal fans.

Make a game that your CURRENT ACTIVE playerbase LIKES and works reasonably well. That way those players may JUST be more receptive to spreading good word of mouth about STO to their friends who will want to join.

As it is, one of the underlying problems of this ****ing referral system is that STO is NOT worth referring in its current state. Even if by some magic you can entice people to try the game, it will not take long for those folks to see this game is lacking and barren. Once they see that, they leave and very likely not come back WHILE telling all THEIR friends how TRIBBLE STO is.
