For the love of Scotty, please please please please please please please please please please please PLEASE (!) DO NOT PUT AUTO ATTACK IN THE GAME.
...
Trust me on this. Shooter fans do NOT want auto attack. Lazy, gold farming, WoW converts want it.
Yeah! Real shooter fans are all into hitting the Spacebar a thousand times each encounter! And let's be honest: Star Trek was always about captains spamming the Spacebar! Just some n00bs want to use tactical gameplay and put their focus on flying and positioning their ship, using their skills and such stupid things
I get it that people have preferences regarding game mechanics...
I don't get it that people condemn a whole game on a detail like that, threatening to leave if this or that is or isn't implemented.
It's not that death penalties or auto attacks or skill caps or the fact that female ferengi wear clothes that the game experience as a whole changes. Those are just details.
What matters to me personally is that I can live out my childhood fantasies of flying around in a starship instead of just having to watch captain Kirk have all the fun. As long as this game succeeds to do what it does now - in my opinion - and that is delivering a Star Trek feel (and not only a space game with a Star Trek skin), I'm immensely happy.
Cryptic has done a wonderful job with STO. You can see and feel the love of Star Trek they put in it.
Group hug!
Instead of employing the DP status to what you already worked long and hard on, why not just make it so that any STO paying members playing this gets a MARKER on their ship/player identity to show how many days they've stayed alive without respawn!
This is a great idea!
Someone repost this and pay attention to it. I am a big fan of this.
Speaking as someone who has played a few MMO's, I quit most of them because of death penalties. I HATE losing my XP because I died. That REALLY makes the game not worth playing. If you're not super skilled at leveling, and you maybe level wrong, as I tend to do, it really sucks to just die over and over because you didn't level the exact right thing back three missions ago.
Please do not instate a death penalty, or I have a feeling STO will also be going on my bookshelf of MMO's I no longer want to play.
To second what other people have been saying. Adding a Death Penalty would make the Deep Space Encounters unplayable. Too many of them have you warp directly into a firefight. I have been killed just entering an encounter. That would be terrible to have to do those missions, get there, and die several times. Especially since those missions give very little XP for completion.
Is there a way we can create a petition to get them to no instate a death penalty?
Please keep your sarcastic comments to yourself mate. Did you mother never tell you if you've got nothing constructive to say, don't say anything at all? This is a serious issue for some people. Honest to God, if you can't be bothered to press the space bar to fire your weapons, I pity you. I really do. I pity any children you may have (assuming your sperm can make it to the end of your urethra before keeling over with exhaustion) and I pity any woman who may be unfortunate enough to find herself betrothed to you because that is going to be one over-worked, under-appreciated soul.
Your reaction kind of speaks for itself, don't you tink? Trying to insult me or my wife or my children does not make your arguments more valid... And speaking of values that someone learns from his mother: your's most likely did not teach you to insult people if you run out of arguments, did she? I hope not...
But anyway: The reasons for and against autofire have been discussed even long before release and the statement I made in favor of autofire was one shared by most of the people here... Just go ahead and use the search...
@Jasper I quite agree, Cryptic and Atari have done a first rate job up until now. I'm just so worried mate, that they're gonna bow to the pressure of a group of trogladytes who are trying to re-map the game into something completely different, and in the process destroy what they've worked so long and hard to create.
Honestly, I'll probably cry if the devs can't muster up the guts to know when to say "No, you play the game we made, or you play something else."
And don't start with the "oh that's commercial suicide" rants because Eve Online was around for YEARS catering to a small niche market, and it's only since they started making sweeping changes to appeal to a mass market that the game went belly up in terms of playability and enjoyability.
I don't want the same thing to happen to Star Trek a month after launch, because you can guarantee that after the ADHD suffering "change game now plx0r or I quitzor" types have butchered the game and left, the devs won't put it back to the way it was before those fools showed up to wreck everything.
Just keep a backup of how the game is at present state (as of 2_26_10), Devs, because I think you'll need it one day in the not too distant future.
I played WoW for 4 years until this game was released and to tell the truth, with the state that WoW is in at the minute STO, for the most part, is a breath of fresh air.
I like the fact that you dont have to commit to 4 hours a night 5 nights a week to kill some rock solid end boss after hours of killing meaningless trash. I like that I can decide to play tonight or not, and I wont be letting my character or my friends down. A certain amount of commitment is not bad but the level I got to with WoW, it became a chore.
The crystaline entity, is a prime example of how fleet actions (raids) can be conducted without having to commit a huge chunk of your life. Except at the moment you do! The one problem your fleet actions have at the moments is coordination. Because you have very little control over who you join with you inevitably get one or 2 people who refuse to work as a team and follow a tactical plan, they dont read chat and there is nothing you can do about it. So you spend 30 mins trying to kill the entity, getting him to 30% then watching as he heals back to 70% then grind him back to 30% and watch as it heals to 70% again. All because 1 person insists on killing large fragments and wont put his engine power to max etc etc etc.
The remedy for this is to provide 1 or more of the following.
1) Fleet Grouping. Being able to invite 20 people you know and trust (and enjoy playing the game with) to kill the entity.
2) Fleet Commander. 1 person willing to organise the ships within the fleet (Starfleet wouldn't have got very far without a chain of command!) Having all the ships in the fleet singing from their own song book makes for a very long and unsuccessful encounter.
2) Fleet announcements (Raid warnings). The ability to place a small amount of text right in the middle of the fleets screen so that, even if they get tunnel vision and dont see the chat spamming, the fleet commander can give direction knowing that it will be seen.
These are simple things which other MMOs use to great effect when dealing with larger encounters.
The suggestions would not limit the fleet action to elitist groups but would give players a little more control over the encounter.
I believe with the implementation of the above, the crystaline entity fleet action (and others to come in future) will become much more enjoyable.
Your reaction kind of speaks for itself, don't you tink? Trying to insult me or my wife or my children does not make your arguments more valid... Listen mate, I can see you're getting a bit wound up. Point of fact I'm not even bothering to read your whole post, and the reason is that it was YOU who came in with the sarcastic attitude. I only responded in kind.
I don't normally jump into forum debates, but I feel strongly enough here to do so.
I don't like the idea of the death penalty. Death penalties are what they are, a waste of time. I put in a decent amount of free time into MMO's, and I like the fact that on STO I can come in and feel a light sense of accomplishment from busting an Orion smuggling ring or taking out Klingon raiders attacking civilians. The combat is fun and enjoyable, and I love that I have to be on a mission to be involved in it (Trek was always about the fights being in the line of duty, not a Federation vessel randomly gunning down ships).
The addition of death penalties starts to add stress to the whole input time get reward equation. I already have a thing in my life that takes 10 hours a day and involves stress and time for reward. It's called a job. Now I can't speak for why some might want to make a game feel like work, but if I wanted to spend my free time working, I'd be doing over time.
If people need more of a challenge, find a better way to add it, I wouldn't mind a few more missions that require me pulling together a full team to beat, but a death penalty is not the way to go here.

Quite agree, DP is nothing more than a (quite literal) waste of time. Especially, as one user mentioned, when you forever warp into insta-death in these deep space encounters. If they can sort that out it wouldn't be a problem but until then it's just gonna get on people's nerves.
Why not add something really useful like buff/de-buff timers?
Sometimes they just can't. Not everyone in the game speaks English.
It's hard to communicate a battle plan then, of course, or explain the crystalline shard concept.
I found that quite some times it's not maliciousness on part of players that don't follow the plan, but just a language barrier.
Implement the Universal Translator, Cryptic! Problem solved!

Then the great thing is that they don't have to do anything. You already have to wait for crew to regen, which effects your system effectiveness, and any powers you had up that were still in cooldown are now gone, but are still in cooldown. Playing a tank I can tell you that being away from my team and watching them get hammered by enemies is penalty enough when I fail at my role of soaking up the hits.
I saw someone mention using some kind of counter to show the number of missions that you've done without getting hosed that other players can see. I like that idea. Reward doing awesomely, don't punish people for something that will inevitably happen in the course of playing a game.

I see your point, as an arrogant englishman i naturally expect the rest of the world to speak my language!
However the problem remains...
There still needs to be a degree of control if these encounters are going to be more than a frustrating waste of time.
Using WoW as an example, the server I used to play on catered for over half of europe. Getting a PuG together to do sartharion wasn't hard tho as the raid leader asked for volunteers and invited them to a group. Once you were ready you went and killed the pesky dragon.
At the moment you enter a CE fight that could have been ongoing for an hour before you arrive, you have no idea who you will be there with, have no recourse should anyone be causing the attemp to fail (due to language barrier or maliciousness) so you keep trying, leaving, trying again, leaving again hoping that one day you will be lucky enough to get into a group that can work as a team.
And yeah the Universal Translator should be made your top priority Cryptic

You don't think it would be helpful to know how long your phaser turret has left before it pops, or how long you have before your shields stop being drained?
I can see your point, I guess maybe I've come to expect effect timers since they're in every single MMO I've ever played iirc.
Oh, I totally agree with that!
I even gave up on the Crystalline Entity just because of exactly that frustration.
I ended up translating English to French to German and vice versa, until I was killed so many times because of hand shortage  that I was tired of it. And in the end the CE went on regenerating anyway, because I don't speak Spanish.

Not to justify his response, but you're response to his concern was nothing less than a cheap personal attack. What indeed were you expecting him to respond with. A thinking person perhaps would have explained what specifically is bad about not having the auto attack. For example, in space, one might expect your tactical officer to continue to fire on the designated target... this is merely an example and may not be specific to the subject. But rather you insulted him and in turn got insulted right back.
Respect has to flow two ways something perhaps your parents may have hinted at in your development at some point.
Gotta go out now. Hope I haven't ruffled too many feathers, just thought I should speak up after seeing how badly auto-attack on the ground was implemented in Stargate Worlds.
But rather you insulted him and in turn got insulted right back.
Respect has to flow two ways something perhaps your parents may have hinted at in your development at some point.
Sorry... I don't see the insult in my statement... And I think my parents are loving and careing and have teached me to not start insulting people if they use Irony to spice up their argument.
Ok... My argument was: In my opinion (and in that of many people elsewhere on that forum) it does not really make a difference if one has autofire and the other one has to press and release the spacebar a few hundred times. Even in a regular shooter you can keep the mousebutton pushed to achive some kind of autofire - and that's one change cryptic has already planned to release (as you can see in the options menu). But if you have autofire you can concentrate on flying, using your BO skills, tactic etc.
That's all I did say with my statement... I never did insult him or began messing with his children, mother or whatsoever...
I was really polite even after he began mocking about me and my family... It might be a better and more pleasent discussion if we leave the whole speculation about someone else's education / parents / children etc. out of the discussion... My parents are decent, loving and fine people... thank you... I am off for today... geez...

Just before I do log off, Faenwolf, I'm gonna make it clear, that by saying I pitied any children you may have if your sperm could make it to the end of your urethra without keeling over from exhaustion, is not an insult aimed at your kids, it's aimed at you. By saying I pity any woman you find yourself betrothed to as she'll be over-worked and under-appreciated, I was again having a dig at you, because of the inherent laziness involved in automatic anything.
I never once insulted your family. And I apologise to the moderator who edited my previous post to remove said comments, since I've put them back on here, but it's only for the legitimate reason of clearing up the fact that I never insulted this man's family. I wouldn't stoop that low.
Hope we can all just agree to disagree, or even better agree to agree.

I just saw that your first post got edited
Well, I accept your apology... I see that misunderstanding and that we have reacted a little emotional here... since this is just a game and not worth getting mad at each other let's settle this... Peace indeed
I see your point and you see mine... end of line...
My biggest concern with Death Penalties are the Signal Contacts. Alot of the time when you zone into them you are immediatley under attack and in some instances by such an overwhelming force that you die before the mission even begins. I've seen people zone into them and their ships just...explode.
Before you rush into the whole death penalty thing, how about you fix that problem? Honestly why would anyone want to do signal contacts when you know that the first thing you are going to get 50% of the time when entering them is an almost instant death and a death penalty?
I'm not saying I'm for or against a death penalty, I'm just saying how about you fix little things like that first?
Thanks for the update. I just look forward to the potential of this game and hope it surpasses this potential.
Maybe more people are interested in a death penalty but I'm reading a lot of posts in this thread which state that they don't want it. Perhaps because the death penalty doesn't exist at the moment most people are not voicing their liking of it not being there. (Please remember that people are more likely to complain about something they dont want that exists or something that is missing than to praise a thing that they already have and like). I personally am not in favour of it. Certainly not with the current state of the game. It is too easy to get killed to often especially with being warped into the middle of a fleet in deep space encounters and not being able to get away from some ships to allow yourself time to heal without the enemy ship warping off and healing itself to 100%.
Perhaps with things like this sorted out and a difficulty bar not to mention a reasonable death penalty so that hours of play arn't completly wasted, death penalty may be good. Perhaps for those of us that don't have fleets or are joined with others to do missions the missions could be easier. This way people have more of a choice. it also means that those that have a fleet could come up against more opposition.
Someone mentioned in an earlier reply about surveys being put into the launcher. I am up for this because unfortunatly I don't get too much chance to log into the forums.

Peace.
I just saw that your first post got edited
Well, I accept your apology... I see that misunderstanding and that we have reacted a little emotional here... since this is just a game and not worth getting mad at each other let's settle this... Peace indeed
I see your point and you see mine... end of line...
Thanks once again
