No, trust me, I said 24 Gigabytes because it was 24,000 Megabytes. I'd played for three hours at best. I gzipped the log down and managed to stuff it into a space of 421 Megabytes, if you want to figure out why it was thrashing so bad. What made me discover it is when I quit out of the game, the application bundle had jumped from the 8gb range to 33GB. I went sniffing to find out why and found that logfile.

If my math is right, that means it was writing about 2.2 megabytes of logfile per second. That's a little extreme. If it does it again I'm going to symlink the log path to /dev/null.

No idea how it got that huge. I've noticed that under users there is a cache that gets bigger all the time, and I've set beta 3 to clear it every launch.

How ever that happened, it shouldn't happen in beta 3, since it only crests full logs if run from inside WineskinConfig.app

Updated post about beta3. Works better than beta2, and don't have to type /renderscale anymore with AA turned on.

Ok so I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. I bought the retail copy this morning. I'm on OS X 10.6 and I started up wineskin, selected the .exe straight from the STO disk. Currently says it's installing.

    Did I miss something?

Reason I ask is that it seems to be "stuck" at about 90% of the install. The install window is still cycling through all the screenshots, but the bar isn't moving. Just making sure it takes time to install rather than sitting here for hours only to realize I didn't do something correctly.

I've noticed that wineskin is producing huge logs (on the order of 10GB) when playing for a couple hours. Is there a way to turn this logging off or make it less verbose so my logs aren't 1.2x the size of the app itself?

Otherwise, excellent work so far. I'll need to check out beta3 tonight.

I'm downloading Beta3, I hope it has upgrade instructions as I could not find them in Beta2. :)

I do not have a retail disc yet to test with... so you tell me how it works :-) It should install just fine though... if not I'll have to figure out why, and modify things.

I have no idea why the logs were so huge.... but beta3 is made off a pre-release Wineskin RC7, which does not create the logs under normal running... so it should not have this issue.

Upgrade directions are in there... but its really easy. You open up the old wrapper, and go to drive_c/Program FIles/Cryptic Studios... and you take that whole folder, and move it into the exact same location in the new wrapper... and your done.... besides adjust screen settings if you had changed those before.

Thanks doh123 for doing this, really superb work!! You might want to take out your username from the client though.

At first it was a little choppy compared to Windows but then I realised that I was using the 9400m in my MBP and not the 9600GT! Super smooth now. I got the graphics smears until I switched AA on. I haven't tried it out yet on my desktop but I couldn't run it smoothly on just one GPU on my ACD anyway.

No AA isn't the end of the world really - especially since I don't think any Cider based games such as Red Alert 2 etc have had working antialiasing options in OSX.

The only thing that detracts from gameplay now are the fonts. Fingers crossed it works out!!

    P.S. Cryptic should hire you!!

yeah... forgot to pull it out of the registry this time....

think I'm gonna stick a new one up shortly that fixes retail disc install issues.. no one will have to upgrade it would only be for new users.... and I'll make sure I remember to take my log in out of there, but its not big deal :-)

So here's where I'm at, I made the mistake like a few others of grabbing parallels and a copy of windows 7 when I picked up my copy of STO today. I went through the whole process only to be hit in the stomach with "sorry you're screwed".

I am so happy this unofficial version exists however my parallels system seems to be attempting to open the sto launcher when trying to use wine and all I get is a black screen.

So... where might that leave me?

Ooop ok so its not parallels, I just attempted this on a seperate machine and had the same problem. Launch the app select the exe from the disc and black screen. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong here just don't know what that could be.

    ....fixed...

I was stupid enough to leave the launcher in full screen mode even though I swore I changed that... Ok installing now.

i just updated the first post about this.. beta3 fullscreen is breaking the installer.

here is how to install correctly...

when WineskinSettings.app starts, before doing the "install windows software" instead go in screen options, and change it from fullscreen to rootless.

at this point the Installer will then run (be warned I'm still in the middle of testing this and the install is VERY SLOW, but my DVD drive is on USB, so that may add to it)

The rest of the install should be the same as the directions I wrote up.

After Install, before running it the first time, the game will not run with those screen options.... before closing WineskinSettings.app, set the screen options back to fullscreen.
(right click Star Trek Online.app, and hit show package contents, if you need to manually run WineskinSettings.app again)

if you want to run in a window, in screen options just enable the Virtual Desktop for Rootless options instead.

When I get done testing this, i'm going to put up a beta 3.1 that automatically always launches the setup in rootless even with the fullscreen setting...

Unlike most Mac apps, I did not make updates happen automatically in WineskinSettings.app... though I've thought about it. currently if you don't hit the Save button, the info is lost.

Thx again for the beta 3 :))

the play run great and didn't notice for now more bug than the one listed...

oh maybe one, but i don't know if it's due to the wrapper, or the game itself...

on the commucation button, when you clic near the map on the starfleet symbol... the name of the contact are impossible to be read... it's write in code...
    same for the border name...

except that all is perfect :)

i will keep reporting any other bugs

So I'm still hitting my head against the wall a bit.

I've gotten through the install, I got to launch the game proper and I get an instant response of "Couldnt create D3D device" followed by a crash.

    current specs:
    MacBook2,1
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    10.5.8
    2 gb ram

    yeah... :-(

thats an older Macbook with an Intel GMA graphics processor... it will not run on that at all, has to be ATI or Nvidia.... the intel GMA graphics in older Macbooks aren't a supported card for WIndows running STO either... have to have a Intel HD, which is newer than the older 950 and X3100s.

Most likely you cannot play on that computer.

Installing from retail disc and had the 'break installer' problem saw these posts and the installer finally appeared and seems to work but is just sitting still in the install at this point "D:/directX/DXSETUP.exe/SILENT" ? Is it suposed to stall out here for like over 10 minutes or longer or do I need to install something else besides this wrapper that my system is missing like a directX something or other or Quartz app or whatever? Trying it on an intel macmini 2 GHz intel duo core 2 Gb ram OS 10.4.11

    ..... Nope.....

I have not done extensive 10.4 testing... though it should work...

when I did the setup from disc earlier, at stopped there a long time too, and the full install took well over an hour... I have no idea why yet... but eventually it got done.

Its not worth it in a mini unless your mini has a geforce 9400M... thats the only type of mini that can run this.

a geforce 9400M works fine... it wont give the error. Did you do a full install, or copy the files over...?
are you sure those are the specs...? double check in System Profiler? I haven't seen a way to get that error message except by having an Intel GMA.

950 in a Mac mini would be an Intel GMA 950.. which you said right the first time....which will not run STO. There is no way to upgrade that in a mini. If it was a mini with a geforce, the only mini made with a geforce are the current ones with the 9400m.

    Installed off the disk.

Those are the specs from the profiler.

Not sure where to go from here.

    SO HERE'S MY NEXT ATTEMPT

I'm removing everything and reinstalling from step 1. Hopefully that'll do something. Or I guess I could just buy a PC...

Well looks like my older mac mini does not have a sufficent vid card as previously stated but thanks for clarifing; but is this also incompatible; since its on my Macbook Pro and seems to crash when loading due to insufficent vid card too? GeForce 8600M GT If so can it be upgraded? and running in fusion 2.0 make any difference or upgrading from lep to snow lep?

Thanks for all the tech help on this too.
And even if i may not be able to use this wine wrapper beta right now it is a great thing to have done so WOOT to the guys involved and the creator double WOOT!

Geforce 8600GT can run this fine... it shouldn't crash... what exactly happens when you try to play, and what does it say?

and what are you doing with Fusion? VMware fusion? thats nothing to do with this thread... 10.5 or 10.6 should both run fine.. I am playing in 10.6 myself.

Tired so this is it but thanks for the help in figureing out some of this tonight. After I click on use the default rather than lowered setting it will crash right after the 2 logo names appear and pass and I get this Cryptic Error Oops!
Oops! Cryptic Application has crashed. To help us out, please indicate what was going on at the time of the crash, while we gather info. and a space for me to make a note and submit button. The wine system Tray shows up during this in the upper left corner. I have the wine set for rootless to get a windowed mode thats about it except at the defualt or lowered setting dialogue it sates I may have an insufficent video/graphics card or some such. Also is a desktop alies supposed to be created out of wine for this cause ive been trashing it though not this last try? Did not know why it was there at all.

it will not run right with Rootless and normal windows... you are running Rootless with a virtual desktop yes?

if you run rootless with a virtual desktop, and leave STO set to fullscreen, it thinks the virtual desktop window is the fullscreen, so it runs like a window on your Mac.

Desktop icons made from the game will not work... don't make them, or delete them... those are Windows shortcuts.

I'm running it rootless with virtual desktop with these settings current resolution at 24 bit and 0 sec pause. My Macbook Pro display is set at 1152 x 720 in millions. My os is ver 10.5.8 Processor 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and Memory of 4 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM with GeForce 8600M GT with VRAM (Total): 512 MB and Depth: 32-Bit Color with the rest of the graphics info here Displays:
    Color LCD:
    Resolution: 1152 x 720
    Depth: 32-Bit Color
    Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    Built-In: Yes

The 24 bit setting in the wine settings differs from the graphics 32 bit but otherwise i dont see anything and i would not know how to change the mac to 24 bit display or if that is adjustable?

I activated my retail key and tried again using both the default display and lowered display and bothtimes as before crashed. Perhaps i should start over and reinstall everything. Googled for driver updates for GeForce 8600M GT but found little or too complex for me to understand.

The lanuch screen always verifies like 98,000 files before i can click engage button but it seems ok then and click on default screen settings and still ok till after the Attare logo disappears and the Starfleete badge is all thats there then the crash dialogue window.

Maybe its something weird like a permissions thing or I dont know. Is there a specific location that this app must be? can it be in a folder on my normal desktop or Applications folder and would that do this?

I previousl got rid of some icon alieses and innitially when trying to install retail game disc into wine i messed up a bit and broke the installer ending up with a black screen untill isaw that post about how to do it from retail disc without breaking installer then it seemed OK finally but maybe the earlier attempts have left somekind of corruption or maybe i need somekind of esoteric driver update for my GeForce 8600M GT? Really worn out and too slow of mind to make much sense but any ideas for me to try tomorrow are appreciated. Maybe I should download the game from my account since i had a prekey and try that first?

24-bit is the maximum Xquartz supports. If your running rootless and its not 24 bit.. somehow... (Millions works fine) then I guess it could cause problems... but it shouldn't. The color depth is mainly only for fullscreen.
1152x720 is a very odd resolution. What are you setting the virtual desktop to any specific resolution? Maybe try something a bit more normal that STO might like better, like 800x600?

1152x720 is very low for STO, make it hard to play.. you may want to run a higher resolution.

hmmm.. its possible certain cards don't like the change i made for AA to be an option...

you can try this... run WineskinSettings.app, go in Advanced, and Wineskin Tools. Run regedit. in that go to current user, software, wine, Direct3D... and look for the entry labeled "Multisampling" and change the "enabled" to "disabled" then see if the game works... if it does you'll have to use the /renderscale fix for the graphics bug as AA will not be available. Make sure in that same place that useglsl is still disabled too... having that enabled causes a crash exactly like you describe.

shouldn't be permissions if it got that far... and location doesn't matter unless you try to move it while its running.

deleting the desktop shortcuts made for Windows is fine, they wont work.... the black screen install in beta3 wont matter, it wont break anything... it just wont work.... theres no driver update for your Geforce 8600 unless it shows up on Apple Software Update.

    Installed, pretty straight forward.

Everything seems to work pretty good. I do see the small text issue you described, and I get occasional artifacting during high-action scenes. pressing ESC x2 fixes it tho.

I also get a video driver warning as the game starts. I'll play with it more later, but I like it very much so far.
