I am sure I can guess the answer to this question, but I will ask anyway.

Will this version work on PowerPC Macs? I have a 15" Powerbook G4 that, well it can run WoW pretty well. I am running STO on a similar specced windows laptop right now because I have no other choice. If it this version would run on my mac I would be one happy camper.

One issue, for me the App doesn't launch consistently. I get the bouncy icon and I have to force quit it. If I open the package and run Wineskin and launch it from the 'Test Run Wrapper' button, it works much more often. Usually I need to kill all packages once or twice to get it going... Didnt seem to have this issue with beta 1.

I haven't been able to find out why some people are having issues like that with Wineskin... might be a conflict with some 3rd party app... or something... I have no idea... a couple people have reported the same thing, but I cant usually get enough data from them to narrow it down, and I cannot reproduce it happening on my own...

Running from the Test Run button wont change anything... has to be coincidence when it works. The code that handles any of that stuff is identical in all the STO versions I've put up... If you get it bouncing in the dock and doesn't run... it most likely has some stuck processes, which will make it tough to run after that. best to open WineskinSettings.app and go in to advanced and tools and kill all Wineskin processes. There are a couple of places t could get stuck in a loop... and it would take a minute or two to figure out its stuck and kill itself. It shouldn't be able to get stuck in them... but not sure how to narrow down the problem just yet, hard to do when it happens to only a handful.

Wine does not emulate anything.. including a processor... it will only work on a x86 processor... sorry

No worries, I run into this problem a lot. But as I got the mac for free I can't really complain.

Guys, doh123's clearly spent a bunch of time on this and has it working almost 100%.

Can I humbly suggest that everyone who's using this configuration *and who wants to*, donate $10 in an attempt to get doh123's Lifetime subscription back?

I hope he won't have a problem with me asking this, but I'm sure there's enough of us who really appreciate his efforts that it wouldn't be hard to donate a little. This isn't a case of trying to force money or embarrass anyone, so no need to comment if this is not for you, this is purely for those of us who choose to.

If more than a couple of us are interested, maybe doh123 could give us a paypal address or equivalent?

While I do not normally ask for any type of donations, or payment, from my hobbies... I do not really expect anyone to.

If you really want to.... any donations should be made for my Wineskin project, which I (and many other people) use to make "unnofficial" ports of games (and other software) to Macs... working hard whenever I have the chance to make it better and better... got some really cool stuff coming up for the last release candidate (hopefully) that I hope to have up in the next day... so maybe I can release a good working 1.0 version soon.

There is a donation link if you go to the files page at Sourceforge.... it goes through paypal.

Done. Sorry for calling you 'he' :-)

Thanks again for your efforts, it certainly saves me time putting this together, and it saves me lots of hassle of switching into Boot camp whenever I want a quick STO fix!

doh123, this program is awesome. I played the open Beta version a PC but just got in a Mac Mini. I spent a couple hours trying to slipstream a version of windows XP sp2 so i could install it on this new Mac Mini... needless to say I failed miserably. Then I came across this thread and figured I'd give it a try, was a little hesitant at first since there aren't many mac mini users on here!

Awesome program, I have no issues with it at all. Font isn't that bad, very readable and graphics are incredible, cheers for all the hard work!

I'm running the game on a Mac Mini 2.26ghz intel core 2 duo, 4gb ram, 160gb hd 5400 rpm, NVidia GeForce 9400 256mb

I copied my working STO install over from my Windows Vista disk and followed all the instructions. However upon launching the ported version, I only get crashes. The crash happens in the same place every time I try to launch the application - during the loading screen after login to the game. I get an error box ("CrypticError:Oops!").

I revised my installation and browsed the error log. This is what I found:

I have checked and none of the files are actually locked - I have both read and write access to all of them, despite what the log wants me to believe.

Unfortunately I have very little time on my hands to do much testing this week (working night shifts away from my Mac and won't be able to even start playing before Friday). However I'll try to give you the info needed to solve this issue here, hopefully it might be of help to anyone else running into a similar issue.

    My specs:
Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008), 2.8 GHz x 8 cores, 10 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB, 4 internal hard drives, running Mac OS X 10.5.8.

are you on an admin account?

the files might have gotten messed up in the transfer... sometimes they get locked copying off a read only folder. I know you said you checked the permissions, but for the heck of it.. you can go inside the wrapper, on the Contents folder, and change it to be full read/write and hit "apply to enclosed items" so it'll re-write permissions to every file in the wrapper.... but its more likely something else... might want to set the Cryptic launcher to do a full file check.

    Thanks again for everything Doh123

This is interesting, ive been playing on an 17" 2.8 2009 4GB Ram MacBook pro on the high end 9600GT graphics card. I have just also tried the integrated 9400 low end card using the same specs @1280x800 and the game played the same. No real difference in frame rate, quality of textures etc.. (everything set to hi)

To be sure I did the Starbase Fleet Action on both cards and not difference as far as I could tell expect the 9400 ran a lot cooler. I find this strange considering how much more I get from Call of Duty 2 (mac wrapper port) when using the 9600GT over the 9400. If I try the game crawls to a halt on the 9400 unless everything is set to low.

Now ive read you are having trouble with the graphics drivers, AA etc... and cards not being recognised. Im not well informed in the process you are following but do you think maybe both cards are getting a lower default setting in the game due to the wrapper?

Im going to install Windows 7 to see what the 9600GT is capable of under real conditions to see if it is really getting held back.

I doubt the game is scaling back what its doing... Wine sure isn't.

the 9400M is not that slow.. its great for integrated graphics. I have played this under both my 9600GT and my 9400M, and while the 9400M does run it very well, it does NOT run it as good as the 9600GT. Its most evident on ground missions, but to even get the same frame rate, I had to turn down a bunch of settings. at 1280x800 there wont be as much of a problem since the 9400 will be able to keep up better. I've been playing at 1440x900 on the 9600.

The antialiasing working is nothing to do with how they game is detecting anything. I can easily set up Wine so that the game sees AA and the option is lit up and you can choose 0 to 16x.... it just doesn't actually do anything. This is an issue in Wine, as its not the only title with AA problems. I left the AA disabled, so it would be grayed out, so people wouldn't have to worry about it being there... since it doesn't work.

    Hi all...

Much thanks to doh, coderanger and everyone helping out here!

I'm actually having a problem starting up the Star Trek Online.app. Looking at the logs, it looks like the XQuartz/X11 startup is failing at keyboard initialization. I re-extracted it from the distribution zip file, and copied in my Cryptic Studios folder into drive_c/Program Files. Does anyone know what I can try to get past this error?

I tried downloading Wineskin RC6 standalone, and trying to run a Wineskin tool like wineconfig or regedit, but it produces the same keyboard init failure in the Wineskin RC6 X11 log.

    Thanks!

Just installed this on my 10.6 Core2Duo Hackintosh. I'm getting better framerates than I do in windows 7 x64! Go figure. (Oh, it's probably because of no antialiasing, hmm.)

Now if we can just get fonts that look better. :)

    Excellent work!

the keyboard config Xquartz switched to.. I could not get it to work in anything but a hard coded location. Most libraries I can have fallbacks set, so if its not in the right location, then its fine.... the keyboard config, I never figured out a way.... (yet). Xquartz was never designed to be movable like this... so I had to figure out how to work around some of the hard coded limitations.

What you may be seeing... currently Wineskin can only run if your on an account with admin access, which is a normal default account for most home users. This is because you need to have full read/write access to the /Applications folder. It creates a symlink from /Applications/.Wineskin (the location X11 thinks its running from) into the wrapper... just for a moment. It only uses the symlink so that the keyboard config can find its config file correctly....

So long story short, the only time I've seen that error, is when you do not have an account that has write access to /Applications folder, which is usually some type of limited account that isn't allowed to install software.

I'm still working on ways to get around these limitations... for non-admin accounts, and still be portable, but its kinda been back burner.

There is just no Font AA in the game which is why they look messed up when they are small. (as far as I can tell). Its probably due to the same reason AA wont work..... fonts in there look fine at large resolutions. Its not a standard Windows font issue, since I have those fonts working fine... its because somehow STO is using their own built in rendered fonts...

    Hi Doh...

Yep, that's probably it. I'm running it using a non-admin account (my normal account for security considerations). I do own the box, so I can create a symlink manually, if that will suffice. What (relative) path/subdirectory is it expecting /Applications/.Wineskin to point to under Star Trek Online.app?

    Thanks again!

I jumped the gun. I have no alt key access - i.e. the default bind for "Transwarp to starbase" is alt+1, but hitting that attempts to fire my main phaser array (as if I pressed 1 alone)

Logitech G19, with option and command swapped in OSX keyboard pane (alt on keyboard = cmd, windows key = option). Neither option nor command trigger 'alt' behavior.

    Control works. Just not Alt.

I have the same problem: I figured it wouldn't be high on the list to fix so I moved everything that used ALT to a macro key.

    Hi Doh...

Yep, that's probably it. I'm running it using a non-admin account (my normal account for security considerations). I do own the box, so I can create a symlink manually, if that will suffice. What (relative) path/subdirectory is it expecting /Applications/.Wineskin to point to under Star Trek Online.app?

    Thanks again!

as long as you never move STO you can make one... and it should work... maybe? haven't tried...

/Applications/.Wineskin needs to be a symlink pointing to... [inside the STO app]/Contents/Resources/WineskinEngine/X11

Just not Alt.

yep... just saw that its not working.... probably something in Xquartz config... maybe... I know I have it mapped so Alt+Click is same as middle mouse button, and that works... so its seeing the key, its just not passing it as an alt to STO.

Going to troubleshoot it a bit.

Also I think I found a much easier solution to the graphics bug than using /renderscale .... after some ore testing I can put up a way to do it in beta2.. and I'll have it available easier in beta3

    Whoa.

There's a 24GB log file created in the application bundle. Jeebus.

It appears to be stuff like this repeating over and over for 24GB.

    fixme:d3d9:D3DPERF_SetMarker (color 0xff0000ff, name L"Shaders_Processed/D3d/Sprite_2d_Sm30_Unknown_Vendor.Phl") : stub
    fixme:d3d9:D3DPERF_SetMarker (color 0xffff0000, name L"Shaders_Processed/Preloaded_Sprite_Vertexshader.Vhl") : stub
    fixme:d3d9:D3DPERF_SetMarker (color 0xff0000ff, name L"Shaders_Processed/D3d/Dist_Field_Sprite_2d_One_Layer_Sm30_Unknown_Vendor.Phl") : stub
    fixme:psapi:GetProcessMemoryInfo inbound cb 40, outbound cb 40

Wowza. That's a lot of logfile!

    "LastRunWine.log"

I could zip it if you want a copy <3

Thanks a lot for this! It works very well, and the instructions were easy to follow. One problem I did run into was that the launcher does not show in full screen mode when external monitors are connected to my 24" iMac.

I read somewhere else on this thread that multi-monitors would be a problem. I have my iMac connect to my TV so that I can stream TV shows on hulu and the like while sitting on the couch. Running STO in windowed mode worked fine, but left me with a smaller than desirable viewing area. As soon as I unplugged the mini-DVI jack, STO launched in fullscreen mode without a hitch.

Now if I can just set the keyboard options so that they are more friendly for a Dvorak user.

    Hi again...

Just wanted to report back that launching with a user with admin priviliges did launch everything fine. Thanks for the help! Can't wait for the official launch!

The log file should replace itself every run, not get bigger and bigger... maybe you meant 24mb? still seems awfully large.... but its possible to get pretty big if you play like 20 hours straight, sense it contiunely writes everything Wine is saying in there as its being used.

the next version, using upgraded Wineskin (I'm finishing up) doesn't create log files anymore unless its launched for debugging....

Just having some keyboard issues, where its not mapping Alt right in anything, not just STO... trying to find a fix for.

If I can fix the Alt issue soon, I'll put up a beta 3 that doesn't have the log files, switches fullscreen resolutions on its own properly, and has an easier setting to fix the graphics bug.... just xkb... keyboard config for X11 isn't playing nice with Alt at the moment.

No, trust me, I said 24 Gigabytes because it was 24,000 Megabytes. I'd played for three hours at best. I gzipped the log down and managed to stuff it into a space of 421 Megabytes, if you want to figure out why it was thrashing so bad. What made me discover it is when I quit out of the game, the application bundle had jumped from the 8gb range to 33GB. I went sniffing to find out why and found that logfile.

If my math is right, that means it was writing about 2.2 megabytes of logfile per second. That's a little extreme. If it does it again I'm going to symlink the log path to /dev/null.

It was working fine this morning before the server maintenance. After the update, the app was crashing shortly after each map change (space to ground / ground to space). I tried reading the log files to find a clue, but it just said something to the effect of a bunch of dlls and .exe files were locked for writing and could not be read back.

I waited to see if anyone else posted similar issues, but it appears not in the past few hours since the update. I decided that the best course of action was to do a fresh install. So I trashed the old one and started a new install. Installation went through fine, but when connecting to the server to patch it now is downloading 10GB of patches for the .hogg files. After the patch runs through, I'll make sure to backup the .hogg files so that should I have to do this again, it won't take hours of download time on my DSL line :)

I had read that someone else was having the same problems that I was a couple days ago, but it was on Windows and their solution was to fix the permisions problem they had encountered with the STO folder (which I didn't find any but attempted to set everyone to read & write access of the STO.app folder) and delete all the .hogg files. They also had to download 10GB. Hopefully this works.

    Thanks again.

I have a new 13" MacBook ( 2.26 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, NVidia Geforce 9400M) and the ONLY reason I've kept Windows on it was for STO. I want to thank you for putting the effort to make this Mac compatible,
The fonts are a little wonky (still legible tho) but everything else runs just fine, sound and everything! So the fonts are just something I'll deal with.

Now I can finally get rid of Windows for good!!!
