Almost every mac out there dual boots os x and win xp/vista/7.. so why even bother trying to emulate this in OSX? The performance will just be degraded. Just boot into win to play the game, and when done boot back into OS X.

I used to have mac, but I have PCs now.. and my PCs boot both Win 7 and the latest OS X. Aside from the bios, macs and pcs are pretty much identicle now a days in HW. Just depends which OS you want to run

Of course! Why didn't I think of this before?? I'll just pop into the garden and retrieve some fruit from my magic money tree to buy ANOTHER operating system.

Im agree with that... too more people think bootcamp is the magic solution... but it's not... the investissement is too important for be a nice solution for everyone...

    Windows 7 = 150 €
    Firewall + Antivirus = 30 €
    STO licence = 45 €

that make a little expensive only to play to one game... especially if we hope a full life account...

That is not an investissement i wish... i prefer wait a mac version, and it's why the work of Doh123 is very important for me, i want to play to STO, but i don't want to be force to install windows and lots a lot of money for it...

Time for a silly question :

    I'm wondering,

Is the wrapper will work with the version for the opening like now the beta is over?

    and

Do we will have to install from the cd box, or we can use the beta version of the software already installed in the wrapper? :D

they haven't said yet... but if its like most... the beta version will work fine, it will just have a big patch... so most likely you wont have to reinstall anything. I'll find out for sure on Friday when I try to play though.

I can understand not wanting to shell out extra cash for a copy of Windows for one program but Cryptic have already stated there is no plan for a Mac Version. What happens if a patch breaks compatibility? WoW has gone through at least two graphical tweaks in its life time it would be myopic to assume STO will stay static in any way. what if the OP quits and or decides it not something he wants to deal with anymore? What do you do then ? Personally I would rather shell out a one time fee for a copy of Win7 Home premium rather than deal with hours of frustrating "it's never going to work like it should" second rate Wine transgaming port its just not worth the time and frustration. Cryptic could be ******s and not support BootCamp but I doubt they would it is real Windows running on generic PC hardware with nothing in-between which would qualify you for support should you need it.

BTW A good quality AV (firewall if you must though the build in Win7 firewall is adequate) will cost you exactly 0 as in ZERO Nothing Nada (in the US at-least)

what is "worth" something to someone is completely subjective.

If its not worth it to you, thats great, don't use it... to many others it is worth using....

I've made it rather simple to use....

Is it possible in the future it may break, and not work, or not work for awhile... sure. Is that any reason to not use your computer the way you want? Its possible in the future you computer will just die and they you wont have a computer until you get it fixed, or buy a new one.. so you might as well just not buy it in the first place...

I get your point, but your opinion on things are very different than many others. I'm not forcing anyone to use this. i made it because I wanted it, and decided to share it for others... I have WIndows 7 installed on my machine as well, which is how I played Beta at first. But If I can run it and play it just as good with just as much fun without having to give up my entire computer, or use Windows all the time, then thats fantastic.

I'm sure people who use Windows all the time do not understand.... so picture it this way.

You use Windows, all your games, or programs, IMs.. everything is all on Windows. Some super game comes out that you really want to play, but its Linux only. So everyone tells you just to dual boot, which you do... but now you have to actually start using Linux, switching to new software if you want to do more than just play the 1 game... if you want to just stick to the 1 game, then anytime you want to play, you cannot be in Windows or use your computer at all anymore... no multitasking...

I have hundreds of programs and other games I use... I do not want to completely close them out and not be able to multitask, just for 1 game... when its actually rather easy to use my version here.

Hmm, I can't get it to work and I can't find a WineskinSettings.app in the contents of the file. When I tried to unzip the downloaded file, it gives me an error message. Just something about the archive extraction failed. I don't really know what to do. I am thinking that the WineskinSettings thing being missing might have something to do with it.

Will this be affected by the head start program?

it sounds like your download was corrupted.. you might try downloading it again.

it should work just fine for headstart as well... dunno why it wouldn't. I'll find out on Friday when I try to play.

Well, the only problem with that is that I have downloaded it 6 times now. Exactly the same each time.

I'm checking the download... I have TONS of stuff on my Mediafire account there, and have seen things get corrupted before.. let me make sure the file up there is good for sure.

    EDIT:

I double checked the download.. downloaded it to a new machine and unpackaged it and used it.. and it was just fine....

let me put up the MD5sum...

you know how to check that?

    the download MD5 is 9da681e55cee18528b43c9bc6d2135eb

you have to check in terminal... in the right folder..
heres an example on how to check your download, assuming you have the zip file on your desktop, just copy and paste the following lines in Terminal.app.
    cd "$HOME/Desktop"
    md5 "STO Unofficial Mac Beta2.zip"

the answer it comes up with should exactly equal the MD5 I gave above... if its different, than the file is corrupted. If its the same... something else weird is going on.

extracting should give no errors, and it should make a Folder called "STO Unofficial Mac Beta2" in it has two things, Directions.pdf, and Star Trek Online.app. You right click the .app and select "show package contents" to see inside of it.

Hmm, it is coming up with that, but for some reason BetterZip and StuffIt both won't extract it right.

EDIT: Yeah, I know about the looking in the show contents area. Like I said before, it doesn't seem to have the WineskinSettings.app for one. I have copied my install folder over like you said and run it, but it just sits there with the icon in the dock forever.

Ok, that finally worked. It took a few seconds to start up, but it did come up. Unfortunately, I forgot that the OB closed at 8 my time. :) Guess I will have to wait. Headstart beings when? On the 31st?

I am still thinking about buying the lifetime subscription. Do you guys really think its worth it?

i used archive utility to make it... never seen anything not be able to unzip it... I just right click and hit "COmpress" ... I thought about making it a 7z which I like more, but I had a feeling people would get confused since the OS doesn't build in an extractor for that.... I guess I could put it in a DMG so its more "normal"

    glad ya got it...

yes I think the lifetime is worth it.. I'll be playing this forever.. even if after a few years it gets down to only a few times a month. I've had MMORPGs I've played for well over 4 years.

and Head Start for pre-orders starts on Jan. 29th at 10am pacific.

Thank you very much for posting this. I was able to install with no problems on my 15'' pro, the launcher worked fine but of course i couldn't get past the main login screen in-game.

The real treat here is that on a hunch i threw in my datafiles from champions online, changed the .exe and that worked perfectly with no changes needed! Heroesbane is once again cleaning the mean streets of gangs and come tomorrow Capt. Roderick will be exploring brave new worlds.

One i have spent more time with STO i will post my feedback

Thats great.... I was pretty sure that Wine build, and the extras done for the launcher/patcher would work for Champions too, but I haven't ever worried much about the game... wouldn't be that hard to throw together one just for Champions I guess, or one designed for both of them... but I'm more of just an STO fan.... I still like CoH much better than Champions.

I don't know... probably not, but you can try it and let us all know :-)

not surprised.. I don;t think a GMA950 can handle it....

but on the good news.. the release (head start) is running just as good as the beta.... so its still good to go.

Doh123, do you have the issue where if there isn't a mouseover window or other window open in sector space, it will just keep redrawing over and over until the screen is white?

Great news coderanger, thanks a lot!

Doh123, Gatewayy, inspected the fleet creator and we need 5 of us in a team before we can create one. We will have to arrange a time to get together and create the 'Federation of Macs' :)
