    Hi,

I re read the first page again, and the renderscale command stopped the smearing(should have read it properly first time).

Also realised that it was just the last weekend, not the last day.

One thing though, I have 2 monitors and it always plays on the left one, Is it possible to make it play on the other monitor ?

    Thanks.

    Toadguy

it *supposed* to go to your primary monitor.... but Xquartz doesn't always function very well on multi-monitor set ups... sorry. Wish I could do more to fix that in a fast time. Xquartz needs some serious improvements, but I'm kinda stuck with using it for Wine at the moment, no other viable option as of yet.

You could try changing your primary monitor and see if that worked... or you can just run it in a large window on the monitor you want...

What its probably doing is always setting to the top left... so you'd have to set your screens up backwards in System Preferences while you play...

I posted earlier about a Macbook (not pro). I was on 10.5.8, but it wouldn't get past the last STO loading screen with the star trek logo.

It seems to be working on 10.6.2 instead with the beta 1 build.

Great work, the loader now is much more stable and patching away. On 1/2 meg this could take some time, so I'm off for some food and will hopefully get a bit of time in before bed!

    Hi,

that's just what I did in the end. Working fine. THough the right monitor is my primary monitor(menu bar/ dock etc). And running it in a window means i can check email etc while playing(I'm meant to be working)

I have to say I'm very impressed with your work. If I didn't know better I'd be sure it was a native app because it works very well. If you as one person(admittedly obviously talented) can do this in a few weeks, why can't cryptic get it together to make a proper mac version.

Cryptic have said that they will look at it, but their first priority has to be getting it to launch, and they have every available person on that.

you can multitask with it in fullscreen... but if your running it in a fullscreen resolutin lower than your normal, it will be kinda yucky.

The easiest way to multitask in fullscreen is to use Cmd+H to hide the fullscreen showing.... expose works as well.

I use CMD+H to switch out all the time... then click on the dock icon to get back.

Cryptic can make a really nice supported version better than I can, since I'm stuck with just the full Windows version, no custom launcher/patcher or anything... I doubt they have anyone on staff that would be able to make a version good enough to charge for (mine isn't).. so they would have to outsource it to Transgaming, or Codeweavers at this point, which have very talented people (I'm just a hobbyist hack that figures out stuff on my own).

Cryptic has too much on their plate with bug fixing and getting it out. If they had planned Mac support early on, and made the game differently.. it might be a different story, but at its current state, once they have it out and running well, its more likely they'll look into hiring Codeweavers or Transgaming to make an official version. While I prefer codeweavers, cuz they are great and help make Wine great... Cider from Transgaming would probably be a better solution overall, which is why most game companies use it.... it can run on the native window system for starters, no X11.. which is the major benefit.

I have a new version I'm finishing up testing.. still have to use Renderscale and ugly fonts.. but the patcher/launcher is full working right (minus web links don't go anywhere)... working on a few more Font ideas.. and if I get it (or Don't) i'll put up a beta 2 soon at least with the fixed launcher/patcher.

    Hi,

you're absolutely right. I'm moaning about something that hasn't even come out properly for the PC yet. I guess they have to make sure the whole thing works, and having just 1 platform to do it on makes it easier.

It's just I've been dreaming of this sort of thing since I first saw a Star Trek Game on an Apple II when I was a kid(imagine a 10x10 grid of . (full stops) with an O for your ship and X for klingons or something like that, it was a long long time ago). I tried eve online but found it tedious beyond belief.

Not sure I really know that much about it, I'm sure there is TONS I do not know. I only got into it about 6 months ago, as a fun hobby so more people could play games on OSX, and just basically have been figuring stuff out as I went... recently changed my major over to computer science as well, but not sure I'll ever work in the field, maybe if Codeweavers is ever hiring? but.. planning on Medical School, so this might just stay a hobby.

    An Apple II -- luxury!

My first Star Trek game was on a PDP-4, using a teleprinter -- now that was painful!

I couldn't get on with Eve either. I'm loving STO, but do have to bootcamp it since Parallels won't run it just yet. I used to work on SoftWindows back in the day, (a pc emulator for macs and unix machines) but I haven't touched Wine since Sun made it back in the early 90's.

updated first post to reflect current Beta 2 I just uploaded for yall.

basically works the same as Beta 1, but the log in screen and patcher works pretty much like normal... web links wont work, but Options, and reading news and patch notes work... buttons change... no annoying white blank window on start...

Wow, I am seriously impressed by your work. I like the idea of not having to bootcamp into XP everytime I want to play very much.

    I gave your wrapper a little test run today on my March 2k9 24" iMac - Core2Duo 2,66GHz - 4GB RAM - GF9400GT

Under fullscreen resolution (1920x1200) it runs at about 10-12 fps with the details turned to nay zero ;) This will mainly be because of the overall performance of the system, but under bootcamped XP it runs noticeably smoother.

One problem that I've got: As soon as i want to set it to windowed Mode via Wineskin settings the program won't load anymore. I tried to set up a 1280x800 resolution / rootless / Virtual desktop and when I click the App-Icon it just jumps around my Dock like silly but doesn't start the launcher. When I go back to the Wineskin settings after killing the app, the resolution setting has reverted to "Always use current".
"Test run Wrapper" from inside Wineskin works even though my selected res of 1280x800 is changed into 1024x768  I'm a bit puzzled how this works but so far I enjoy being able to play it under Mac OS.

Thanks a lot and keep up the good work, hope my post is at least a wee bit helpful.

    Tante Edith fixed the typos...

I thank you for what you are doing for the mac community.
As soon as i've had the patience to transfer my crptic folder on the mac side of (the moon) the hard drive i'll test it and i'll test for CO too since i have it too.

    Keep it up!

    .

one thing that might not be very clear in the Wineskin settings...

there are 2 sections of settings in Screen Options. One is for Rootless settings, one is for fullscreen. Changing the resolution there under fullscreen settings will not affect in any way what happens when running rootless.

Basically if you want to run it in a window... Set it to Rootless, wit virtual desktop. it will launch in 1024x768. inside the game leave it set to fullscreen, and change the in game resolution to what you want it to be... 1280x800 or whatever, and it should change the window for you. The game can actually control the size of the virtual desktop.

Can you tell me what OS your using? and I need to know what is in a couple of the log files... it really should launch.... no matter if you try to choose a resolution or not.

I need to know whats in the 2 log files inside the .app at Contents/Resources/Logs right after it messes up ... so I can see what Wine is saying, and the X11 server. You can probably copy and paste them inside of here in a quote box.

    Hi again,
I downloaded your app and tried it with STO and CO
    First thing:
    - The STO launcher works and it begins to update, sadly i have an old version of sto beta in my cryptic folder and an up to date version on my steam (since i pre ordered it from steam) is it any hope for me to play it form the mac part or the fact that it is going through steam is dooming me for bootcamp? (the non-steam is updating smoothly on my mac now, since nearly no one is updating beta now it really goes fast).

    - I've tried selecting ChampionsOnline.exe as the exe needed with wine and when i launch the .app nothing happens, it is opened in the dock but no window appears and no black screen with a quarter used by launcher...

    so in anothers words:
    - Issue: Is there a way to use steam-binded version of game? (if not i can buy a retail standard version for install on my mac it won't cost much after the preorder and the lifetime sub...).
Actually it's a question for cryptic people. Since the client is updating after logging in, Could I use the beta client to play the full game after launch/headstart? I think I read so on outersites but not on the official one.

    - Semi-Issue: Champions Online doesn't seem to launch needs some tweaking? (Should i rename the .app Champions Online.app?

    Hi again!
    I'm running 10.6.2.
I think the Wine log is hardly of any use, it just displays loads of D3D errors (from the last fullscreen run i suppose) and its about 44MiB in size ;)
The X11 log could be more interesting:

to run the game, instead of double clicking the .app... go inside Contents/MacOS folder and run the 'Wineskin' program with terminal.app.... it will say some things about what its currently doing.... and I'll know what section it was in when it got stuck.

I know that its possible to play a lot of games in Wine through steam, so there has to be a way to get it to work... but I do not have the steam version to play with. I can look into it some more.

You don't need to work it out.
I just figured out that when you are connected on the CO official site you can download COclient, so I guess STO client will be downloadable as well upon release. So the steam question won't be an issue, since people with accounts can get standard client for free.

    This is simplier no?

Edit: Update is finished so I began playtesting it.

    My config:
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    2.93 GHZ Intel Core Duo
    4 G 1067 MHz DDR3
    ATI RADEON HD 4850

First thing everything runs smoothly (even the blue trace of the ship) BUT i'm very limitated in graphics, i've put everything I could on max and the game absolutely not the same than on bootcamp, there is no reflection at all (othing is shiny), textures are really rough.
It told me at the beginning that it wasn't recognizing my video card, am I doomed with the no mac-native-ati-driver-update-since-2007?

If there is a printscreen option i can show you the video settings and the results on screen.

    First off doh123 Thank you!
by far this is the easiest implementation of wine i have ever used

and 2nd Steam by default has the exact same files as the normal Star trek online beta. normally this files are located at "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\star trek online\" copying this directory into the .app and pointing the launcher at the star trek online.exe in this folder works fine

no actualy if you want to test it while in windows close steam and browse to the folder that holds it and launch it by it self ( i made separate icon to launch it this way so i don't get the overlay by hitting shift tab )

i did the same thing with Champions online and there are no ill effects ( aka patching and launching in steam doesn't cause it to re patch or freak out in any way )

is it just that the steam client needs to be installed in the app as well?

someone can try using the Installer inside of WineskinSettings.app to install whatever Steam has?

Alright, I suppose it was a Mac OS/dock issue, because after having changed settings, it didn't start in either mode. And when I pulled the icon off the dock and started from inside the Apps folder it works again ;) As if I couldn't have figured it earlier ;)

Almost every mac out there dual boots os x and win xp/vista/7.. so why even bother trying to emulate this in OSX? The performance will just be degraded. Just boot into win to play the game, and when done boot back into OS X.

I used to have mac, but I have PCs now.. and my PCs boot both Win 7 and the latest OS X. Aside from the bios, macs and pcs are pretty much identicle now a days in HW. Just depends which OS you want to run

so I'm supposed to give up all my programs and software and just turn my machine into a Windows PC and have to use Windows? thats horrible.... i'd just as soon not play it at all.... why have to lose my whole computer to play 1 game, when I can run the game 90% just as good and not lose my whole computer?

I'm sure a Windows lover wouldn't ever understand it... just accept not everyone has the same wants and likes.

if you try to run the "Star Trek Online.app" that is inside of the main app in the MacOS folder... the game will not function. Thats basically a fake little .app used for X11... it has to be launched in a special way by Wineskin, not just double clicked.
