Anyway, I'm trying to work out if it's a global STO issue (do Windows users have this problem?), a Mac/WINE issue, or something unique to me. Also, can anyone help me generate more useful debug info from WINE, and let me know where to find it? I've tried running in debug mode/test-run but I don't get any information about the crashes from that.
its probably Wine... STO used to work under Wine much better, but every update they do causes more problems.
Lastly, what's everyone's performance like versus Bootcamp? I'm on a dual quad-core 3.2ghz Mac Pro with 10gb RAM and the NVidia GeForce 8800 GT (512mb), so performance is actually pretty good under WINE running at the first notch on the slider, with lighting on high, high-detail objects and post-processing switched on. I can run some areas on higher graphics settings, but I'm let down any time I visit a busy area (can't help but wonder if it'd run better without all the other players :P)
Under Bootcamp I can run on much recommended settings, again I can run on higher but not if I want to visit crowded areas. So the performance under WINE is a bit behind compared to some other games, but not too much. I'm wondering if there are any recommended video features for running under WINE; for example, I find I get slightly better performance if I limit my framerate to 30 fps under the Troubleshoot heading, it also eliminates my GPU's annoying fan.
its rare for a directx game to run better under Wine, its usually worse since it has a whole Direct3D->OpenGl layer that slows things down.
I installed and patched everything fine last night. Today when I try to run the app, I get a blank window with nothing at all coming up. Not even the delta shield "Loading" graphic.
I'm running OSX 10.7.3, and my Wine screen settings are:
Override Settings: Rootless (windowed)
Virtual Desktop at: 1280x800
Installer Options: Force Normal Windows
Override Wine control of Screen Settings? Override
Other Options: Auto Detect GPU Infor
And the Extra Gamma correction is at the default value.
Where are the options to set fps? I'm not seeing it anywhere. As an added note, I've not had a single issue yet running STO on my iMac. I love it and have been using it for over 500 days now! But, if putting it at 30fps helps me in crowed areas, I'm all on board. Just tell me where.
Also, I just noticed that you're now at version 1.3.2 and I'm still on 1.3.0. Are there any significant reasons I should upgrade to 1.3.2 if I'm not currently having any issues?

Under the video tab scroll down to the bottom and click the "Troubleshoot" heading, it'll expand to give you some extra options. Some of these are changed automatically as the game is running, or are enabled by the basic slider, but the frame-rate one seems to be very useful set to 30 fps as it may actually be smoother, and is certainly easier on your system.
Actually, does anyone know frame-rate can be set to any other value, with an in-game command perhaps (since we can't edit the prefs file in safe mode), as I was thinking I might try values between 20 to 24 fps as well, since STO isn't really a twitch game so extra frames aren't a big deal IMO.
Oh, on the subject of video settings still, I'm encountering a weird issue with the "high" setting for lighting quality. Most of the time it actually runs better for me than low quality, and of course looks a lot better (characters especially). However, I'm finding that one effect in particular, the shield emitter ground ability, is causing all kinds of horrific distortion and triangle stretching all over the screen. It's inconsistent, but it seems to be only that one ability, which seems to suggest there's something weird with the shader used for that shield generator's area of effect. Sometimes it works okay, but a lot of the time I have to switch back to low-quality lighting so I can play ground areas then switch back later to try again. Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar?
The wrapper has worked fine for me up until the latest patch. Now the launcher freezes whenever it attempts to patch; I have tried to reinstall to no avail. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?
Can someone help me? I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to stuff like this, and I don't know what I'm supposed to download from the "retail disk or the torrent" Is that Windows software I'm supposed to have, or some STO software I'm not aware of?
I know, I know, I'm dumb, I'd appreciate some help if anyone can offer it up

you have to have a copy of the actual STO game... that is what you install.
The confusion comes in when you go to download it off the website here... they do NOT have an option to download the game. They only have to option to download a program that downloads the game for you... and that will not work right in the wrapper.
If you search on Fileplanet.com, they have a full version download.. its like 4GB in size so it takes a long time.
So, are any of the newer WINE versions any more stable? One of the recent STO patches seems to have made it crash more frequently, though I'm not sure if that's WINE specific

you can test some out.. I tried one of the 1.4 RCs a few days ago but only for a few minutes.. but it was running good.
If you want to update this wrapper to a 1.4... you'll need to get the newer engine through Wineskin Winery, change the engine out through Wineskin.app, then before you run the game, since sound problems are fixed with 1.4, launch winecfg and go to the libraries tab and remove the mmdevapi entry. If you leave that entry in there with a stock 1.4 build, there will be no sound.
So if this is a stupid question I apologize in advance. I'm pretty new to MMOs (this being the first I've tried). That being said I'm fairly computer-literate. I installed the game on my 13-inch Mac Book Pro, and created my character with only minor problems. When I click "play" at the end of the character creation screen however, I get a message reading "Got Empty Game Server List." Has this happened to anyone else, or did I miss a basic MMO-universal step? Any help would be appreciated.
you really are to be commended. this works great. i had a few problems at install and couldn't get the game start at the beginning, but somehow it works
in the name of all mac users: thank you very much for making it possible even for us to play STO (shame on cryptic for excluding macs...).
Turns out it was just a server issue, and last night's patch seems to have fixed it. Thanks for this, and all the time and effort everyone has put into this support thread. I'm a graphic designer (ergo, I love Macs), but I'm also a pretty big Sci-Fi buff who loves games like this, and the rampant exclusion of the Mac community by the gaming industry has made it really hard to enjoy titles like this.
p.s. Just a minor bug report. It's nothing major and it seems to clear it self up after about 20-30 min of playing, but the sound is a bit glitchy. Bursts of static pop up every few seconds behind the game sound. It's really nothing that has any impact on the experience, just thought I'd mention it.
Anyway. Thanks again to the original poster and all who have contributed to this thread.
After getting fed up with the drag-related crash I switched the engine to WS8Wine1.4-rc4 and it does run very smoothly, specifically a lot of interface actions (including dragging) a less jerky than before.
I do still have some weird issues with lighting quality set to high, which is a shame as the game looks a lot better. Something to do with shield generator shaders appears to be the culprit.
Thank you for this. I just got STO installed on my Macbook Air, and it works great!
I do have a small nitpicky question though. On the login page, it defaults back to a login type of Perfect World each time. Anyone know where the config file is where it stores that bit of info? I have a Cryptic login, and don't want to have to flip that switch everytime.
STO on my Macbook Pro worked fine two days ago, and now whenever I load it up, it progresses to about the Trek logo loading screen for 5-10m, flickers, and the program crashes. Activity monitor says there's disk activity, so it seems to actually be loading, but never starting up.
I'll troubleshoot it a bit more, but I find it funny that the same revision of the game that had been tested to work great now crashes every single time. Anyone else having this issue?
I am really excited to get this all set up and started. I have dowloaded the Winery and went through all of the directions that you gave. However, I am unable to find the setup.exe file in the download file that was supplied by STO. I tried start.exe but I just got a black screen with an "X" for the cursor. Could you please help me out. Is there a specific location of the setup.exe file? I am computer literate just not as savvy as most of you out there. Any help will be much appreciated!

This has been covered like 10 times in the last 20 posts here...
you need to download the full game... the download from this website is NOT the full game, so there is no setup.exe. The download here is just a program for Windows that downloads the game for you, and it will not work.
Go over to fileplanet.com and search for the STO client, and they have a full download you can do.

How do you change the engine?? I dont see any option to edit the wrapper.

The easiest way is getting Wineskin Winery... and downloading a new engine. Whatever you download in there will show as available when you go in the wrapper's Wineskin.app to Advanced, Tools tab and press Change Engine.
I just tried the 1.4-rc5 engine, removed the mmdevapi, and tried it. It seemed to work except the mouse does really strange things in ship mode / sector space. I looked around for any mouse related options that seemed like they might help but to no avail. Any ideas?
EDIT: 1.3.37 does not exhibit this mouse issue. (STO UMV 1.3.2 final -> use internal wineskin updater to update to wrapper 2.5.4 and engine 1.3.37(requires wineskin winery to be installed), remove mmdevapi from libraries).

Hello, this is my first post on this forum so I hope I'm doing it right.
I'm running STO on a Macbook Pro, specs are as follows:
Intel core 2 duo 2.4 GHz
2GB Memory
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
I originally ran the game through Parallels using Windows XP S3 and it was working... not well, but it worked, up until the most recent patch a few days ago. Then I spent all day yesterday trying to find the proper drivers and such, pulling my hair out because I really wanted to play this game!! (it was giving me a D3DERR_INVALIDCALL error, whatever that is)
After many hours of frustration, I finally decided to try the Wineskin route. The game installed just fine, but then it patched about 6gigs worth of stuff. So I waited hours for that to finish... Then the game worked perfectly! But then, after a few hours of playing, it shut down giving me a fatal error again. Because I was out of hard drive space. The game had somehow swelled to 13.9GB. Can somebody help explain this?
I just checked the file size again and it is now 9.46GB. What's goin on?

maybe its downloading the Beta client too, and not just for the live server? Thats the only time I've seen it get that big... did you click on log in to change to the non-live server?

I didn't even see that as an available option. It's gotta be something on my end, because I restarted and all the free space is back, and the game is down to 9.47GB like it should be.
Only now it's giving me a fatal error message. I log in and it loads the cryptic logo. It puts up the Star Trek Insignia loading screen and sits there for about 5 minutes, then a windows error prompt shows up and it says GameClient.exe has encountered a serious error and needs to shut down. :[

try starting STO once in its safe mode option... and make sure all your graphics settings are correct.

Just a general tip concerning hard drive space: It is recommended to always keep at least 10% of the drive free at any time. OS X does not like to be left without hard drive space at all. I have no idea if lack of hard drive space has contributed to your issue, but I thought that I'd just mention this

I also leave it at 30 fps max, it seems to help.

Any thoughts on why this is coming up blank?

All of my Captain's (VA) skills have been reset and I have to re-distribute all the skill points. Is this normal?
Thanks
Edit: I just noticed the skills have been changed. I guess I missed a lot in these 4 months. I'm going to have some catching-up to do...
