Let me know what you think about this system It has the dual core amd black edition cpu that can be unlocked to be a quad core depending if my motherboard lets me, but i figure i wont do that just upgrade the processor at a later date.

Not a bad little setup. MSI NF980-G65 should be able to unlock the AMD Phenom™II X2 550 lock cores.

Now the PSU seems to be a bit of a over kill. Unless you are planing on some serious SLI in the future.

Memory - Get the Corsair Dominator for the extra $39 you get those large heatshink. Great for OC.

Oh, on the case beware of anything with bright lights. Especially if you are sleeping with it.

I see, I did read about it being Quad core but two cores were locked, but I would have to pay extra for a Motherboard that had the ability to unlock it though (for certain anyways) and even then I read it was not guaranteed to actually unlock them and have them work.

I was thinking of just leaving whichever CPU I was to get as it was, or just overclocking the Phenom normally without core unlocking.

Phenom sounds good either way, thank you very much for your help, and thank you to Pike1701A for your response also.

    Hi White Knight,
I see you use a GTS 250, and I'm thinking of getting one . I have read some nice reviews about it , but have seen there are two types Green Edition and standerd. I have sussed the lower power bit  but are they both the same speed/performance?
Plus how do you find it? nice performance?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Im getting parts for a new computer at the moment, the cheaper board is a Asus M2N68-AM 2000MT/s (NVIDIA 7025) but from the list I read from I would have to get a Asus M4N78 Professional 5200MT/s (NVIDIA 8300) Motherboard instead to have the ability to unlock the locked cores, it would not cost me that much extra, but I was not sure if it's worth it for the 'chance' of unlocking the cores?

    What do you think?

Thank you by the way for your on going help.

The Asus M4N78 Pro is a better board. That alone is reason enough to get it. Nothing venture, nothing gain.

You can always go Gigabyte. They have a every high success rate.

Ya i think I like this setup better than the last, also I went with a higher power supply so that i could sli later.

I am hoping that nvidia releases some type of new fan tech that cools downs those cards so that it would be easier to sli them without burning up your system and we all know heat takes the last ability out of your system.

This mother board has triple sli eventually maybe about 3 or 4 years from now ill probably try it out.

Ya i am going with the corsair memory. How much memory is enough? Like I know at a certain point getting more memory is just a waste? So what would be good for STO above recommended specs?

Case: Im probably going to go with a different case let me know what you recommend from that website thx.

You can always use after market GPU fan/heatsink.

4GB is the sweet spot but a lot of people are going with 8 GB (4x2GB). 16 GB (4x4GB) is just too expense.

Corsair Obsidian Series 800D Full Tower is not a bad case. Good cooling and cable management.

The GTS 250 is a 9800 GTX+ but 10% faster. It handle Batman AA with no problem. You did not list model for the green card so I can't commit on it. But Green means lower power so it can't be OC and in really, really damaging 3D area it the game it might not be able to keep up, lag.

I need to try Mass Effect final Big Boss Battle with this card. My old 9800 GT had big lag.

Last I heard would be $14.99 per month but paying multi-months at once will drop cost, but that was not determined yet how much.

    Most MMO are something like $15 / 30 days, $13 / 90days and $11 / 180days

When you get your beta key you get the instructions. Do a search first before asking these kinds of questions. It be ask and answer a lot in the main forum. This thread is for helping people with getting their systems ready to play.

Yes, it will play but that ATI Radeon HD 3200 will only let you play a low settings. I would upgrade it.

    Run STO test.

Here's a list of GPUs. Make sure you PSU can power them. You made need to buy a new one.

    Graphic Gaming cards:
    Entry level:
    ATI HD 4650 and 4670 cards only needs a 400 W PSU.
    Nvidia Geforce GT 240 needs a 350 W PSU
    Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT needs a 400 W PSU.
All four of these cards usually do not need a 6 pin PCIE cable. Always check the box for system requirements.
STO Gaming level med. Price ranges on these cards are under $100.00. The ATI's usually a better choice here on a price/performance.

    Mid Level:
ATI HD 4850,4890, 5750, 5770 and the Nvidia 9800 GT, 9800 GTX, GTS 250 needs a 450 to 500 W PSU with one 6 pin PCIE cable. Always check the box for system requirements.
STO Gaming level High. Price Range: $100-230.00.

    High End:
    ATI HD 5850, 5870, 5970. Nvidia GTX 260, 275, 295 needs a 550 to 750 W PSU with two 6 pin or 1 6pin and 1 8 pin PCIE cables. Always check the box for system requirements.
STO Gaming level Very High. Price Range: $250.00-600.00.

I think my wife and I both need new laptops to play. If I could go the desktop route I'd just build something, but lifestyle-wise laptop is the way we need to go. The decision is driving me nuts.

I had hoped I could knock this out in a couple of hours today... I've been wrestling with this 6+ hours. The GPU, resolution, and i7 vs. Core2Duo debate is killing me -- along with the wide range in prices. I can use some advice!

    Current setups:
    Core Duo Processor T2300, 512MB Radeon X1400, 2GB RAM
AMD Turion 64, 256MB GeForce Go 7200, 2 GB RAM

    Looking at...

    ASUS G60VX-RBBX05 ($899)
    1GB DDR3 Geforce GTX 260M
    2.13 GHz Core2Duo
    4GB RAM
    7200 RPM HD
    16 inch display, 1366 x 768
    DVD

    ASUS G72GX ($999)
    1GB DDR3 Geforce GTX 260M
    2.53 GHz Core2Duo
    6GB RAM
    5400 RPM HD
    17.3 inch display, 1600x900
    DVD

    Acer aspire AS8940G-6865 ($1349)
    1GB DDR3 Geforce GTS 250M
    1.66 GHz i7 720M
    4GB RAM
    5400 RPM HD
    18.4 inch display, 1920x1080
    BluRay

    TOSHIBA Qosmio X505-Q875 ($1729)
    1GB DDR5 Geforce GTX 360M
    1.66 GHz i7 720M
    6GB RAM
    7200 RPM HD
    18.4 inch display, 1920x1080

Anyone of these systems would be great. GTS 250M will let you play STO at high setting but you may have to lower the resolution a bit.

The GTX 260M STO of Very High.

The GTX 360M (Which I haven't hear of till today) should give you the WOW factor. Meaning everything on Very High. Plug this into a large monitor and be amazes.

This GPU is so new that there are no reviews on it yet. Notebookcheck has this to say about the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M which is the step down from the GTX 360M.

The GTX 360M should be near the top of the Class 1 GPU. Somewhere near the GeForce GTX 285M.

    http://www.guru3d.com/news/geforce-gtx-360-and-380-benchmarks/

With the choices you have selected I wouldn't worry about the CPU. The i7 are the best and most expense cpu's on the market today. As a gamer you wouldn't notice the performance boost from a Core 2 Quad. But the GPU that's another issues. If you can afford it get the TOSHIBA Qosmio X505-Q875. You will be the envy of everyone.

And get the large battery. On any of this laptops the battery life will suck. You can also use a USB Battery pack.

Thanks so much for the quick response, White Knight. It's a huge help! The 360M threw me for a loop as well. I'd love to spring for the Toshiba, but at least it is good to hear I won't be disappointed if I go with an Core2Duo.

    Star Trek Online: Tech Check
When talking to the developers we learned that the engine is optimized for dual-core systems - additional cores are not or only slightly utilized. DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 are not supported. FSAA or SSAA can be activated directly in the game. The physics engine is a self-made structure that runs on the server as well as on the clients. But we couldn't make out more than a few flying pieces of debris in the ground battles. Don't expect ripped of warp nacelles or scraped saucer sections.
    Star Trek Online: Benchmarks
The PC of Namco Bandai which we played on was equipped with a Core 2 quad Q8300, four GiByte RAM and a Geforce GTX 260. Taking a look at the Windows Task Manager after a longer gaming session confirmed what the developers told us already: Two cores were fully utilized while the remaining two cores weren't. Since only one test PC was available and we had limited time only, we stuck to benchmarks with highest and lowest graphics settings as well as FSAA and AF. The figure respectively our ship weren't moved to make sure the scene is reproducible

Then the GTX 260M is better.

Again, I really have to say thanks... Your advice has been incredibly helpful. I'm going to see if i can pick up one of those 17inch ASUS laptops right now!
