I get the feeling that was a lot more mundane than it came across as.
It was completely pointless to include then. "This is a science ship" - "but there are armed guys with black badges" *dramatic camera pan on a black badge* - and immediately we never ever see a black badge again, nor do we see armed personnel in the hallways. The entire set-up of what Discovery "feels like" is completely forgotten.

I've honestly never liked the idea of S31 having its own distinguishable uniforms, it totally defies the point of a secret organization that isn't supposed to exist. It would be like if James Bond showed up at the bad guys night club with a military uniform on.
The same goes for them having their own ships. An agency like S31 shouldn't be using anything recognizable as Starfleet equipment. They should be using stuff that other powers are using like old Klingon birds of prey (which are apparently easy to get since the Ferengi have them) or modified freighters and such.

They will just expand the copyrights from 95 years to 150 years to 200 years etc until humans cease to exist or they no longer make any profit from it. Disney has until 2024 before Mickey Mouse becomes public domain. Of course, American Copyright Law has no meaning in other countries so if Russia or North Korea wants to create their own Mickey Mouse cartoon, then Disney can't do anything about it. Only when Russia or North Korea try to import their Mickey Mouse cartoon to the US will Disney be able to prevent it from entering the country.
I initially really enjoyed DIS pretty much all the way through. But recently I've been re watching a lot of the TOS and I realised that whilst a lot of all the other series (TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT and TOS) have episodes you would happily watch over and over again, DIS doesn't have any episode I actually want to watch again.
I can live with the ships in DIS, I love the uniforms and props.I like some of the crew (Tilly, Saru, Culper, Stamets) but am still on the fence with Michael Burnham, because I cant shake the feeling its someone RPing a Vulcan rather than a fully formed character.
Its very odd because I've realised there's something not quite right with it but I cant quite put my finger on it. I think that its something to do about the utter lack of exploration that is in all the other incarnations. Yes there was parvo, and yes I realise that the war was on but even DS9 had exploration even during the war.
I've realised that really I feel its up there with TNG series 1 and I really hope season 2 is better.

Absolutely. I agree with this wholeheartedly. This is a symptom of our time and may be due to the feeling of nostalgia one has for the things we watched as we grew up, but then again I can re watch the Marvel films again and again for instance so it can't be an explanation as simple as that. But I agree that DSC has no re-watchability in my opinion. At all. I can watch Daredevil (S1) on Netflix again and again, but there is absolutely nothing in DSC I even would like to take a second look at - ironically I'd even consider re-watching ENT episodes now and that is a show I've only seen once in my lifetime and didn't want to watch either. So maybe if the next show comes around I'd look at DSC again but I don't know.
A lot of modern films and shows strike me as that, just as many modern games have little re-playability. Maybe it has just to do with age and subjectivity but for what it's worth, I agree with the sentiment.

That seems to be the consensus for a quite a few Season 1s, then you have other shows where Season 1 is great, but it just goes downhill after the season finale.
Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 1: I didn't hate, wasn't great.
Babylon 5, Season 1: I didn't hate, wasn't great.
I would more considered Disco's season 1 awesome, but not without flaws. The conclusion of the Klingon arc just didn't feel satisfactory yet, and before that, I think Lorca's reveal was great, but his "political" view seemed weak and one-sided.
I don't know if they will be able to keep up the quality and/or if they will be able to smooth out the flaws next time. But I am looking forward to both rewatching season 1 and seeing season 2.
But for now, Jessica Jones has precedence.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
A quick story:
A friend of mine had head good things about Discovery and asked to use my account to watch it. Yesterday he watched it in one sitting and loved it. He texted me questions as he was watching. He's only seen two episodes of TNG and the Kelvin movies. As he was watching i was giving him history lessons. Thats Spock's father, Kirk's been to that universe...ect, etc,ect...
Learning all of this has made him marathon TOS.
The point is every show is someone's first Star Trek...including Discovery. Instead of shunning them and badmouthing the show...use it as a way to bring them into the vast awesomeness of Star Trek as a whole. I am not saying you have to like the show or even watch it. But we can grow or wither the fandom by how we treat new fans. Welcome them.

I voted Kobayashi Maru because I didn't have high hopes and after I watched it, didn't like it. It was a no win scenario for the show because I was partially bias against it before I watched.
The Black Badges being Section 31 insignia is certainly interesting and implies a huge connection between the USS Discovery and Section 31. The Section 31 guard on the USS Discovery in the beginning of the third episode wouldn't be wearing his Section 31 insignia if the USS Discovery wasn't related to Section 31 in some way. So the issues are what was he guarding that required Section 31 to protect it in the open and how many more Section 31 personnel are on the Discovery.
So if Section 31 was out in the open on the USS Discovery, then they have access to the files to create their own Spore Drive in addition to whatever secret projects are on the Discovery, but not shown.

yes, because we all know super-sekrit organizations have big, visible insignia they wear in the field like (comic book) Hydra, right? kinda like hte special camouflage uniforms the CIA uses for their covert operatives, or the KGB's fancy tattoos, right??
(only, they don't do that stuff.)
and of course, the neat special sooper-sekrit Delta Force leather jammies?
no.
Black Badges are probably (unless the creators are the hacks i already think they are) just something mundane, Starfleet's 'military police' maybe, or a 'marine' branch of some sort, not something that is instantly and immediately recognizable as "Hey, mister spy? you wanna look behind this door here because there's something AWESOME for you to steal!!"
the whole point of "COvert" in "Covert Operations" is NOT to advertise that what you're doing is covert!!!
Which is why it is extremely odd. We see a guard with a black insignia on the USS Discovery when Burnham first boarded the Discovery with her fellow prisoners, then we see a guy pretending to be a Trill give Empress Georgiou the same black insignia and says "Welcome to Section 31" in that 5 minute clip in the link. One of the prisoners mentioned never seeing a black insignia before so whatever branch it is, it is an extremely rare branch.
I am willing to believe that someone goofed up putting a Section 31 insignia on that guard when we have never seen it since until after the season finale. As far as Section 31 having its own insignia, it would make sense as long as long as it is only used at Section 31 facilities and when to talking to co-conspirators that know about Section 31. It is also possible that it is an insignia that can disguise itself as other insignias or uniforms. After all, we have a Section 31 uniform in STO even though spies shouldn't have uniforms.

Heh, intel officers have uniforms, they just don't wear them while trying to infiltrate stuff.
