Lucasfilm has a much more lenient policy. And they're doing just fine, even as part of Disney.
White-knighting is a charged term here. The point is that the intellectual property is theirs to do with as they please. They are free to set whatever terms they like. Yes, they could be less stringent. They chose not to go that route.

And I am no fan of Disney, but it's hardly any worse or oppressive than what we had with Lucasfilm.

So is acting like a mod. Nobody said they couldn't set their policy to whatever they wished. They said it was drastically severe. But few seem intent to pointing the fingers to other companies in order to give more credibility to Paramount. That's the point.

Maybe because they have been very lenient not to file a suit against long Star Wars fan films exceeding the guidelines in a court.

Maybe there wasn't a Star Wars "fan film" that raised over $1 million and produced nothing but a 20-minute short and a small scene of an alleged unfinished movie...

Maybe, and probably because they are in the middle of releasing their movie and TV series. I am sure Disney would send a cease and desist if someone was making a feature length film to rival Rogue One in support and budget.

I already had this discussion on Google+ so I'll paraphrase what I said over there. I don't agree with the new policy, but, A, I can't really blame them for going nuclear over Smart Aleck Peters' misbehavior, and B, as a fiction creator myself (and not just fan fiction, underline; I've done some original writing as well) I understand and recognize the right of a fellow fiction creator to do whatever the hell they damn well please with their intellectual property.
Let's get some more points of comparison out here. Do you know what Anne Rice, Archie Comics, Dennis L. McKiernan, Irene Radford, J.R. Ward, Laurell K. Hamilton, Nora Roberts, P.N. Elrod, Raymond Feist, Robin Hobb, Robin McKinley, and Terry Goodkind have in common?
They're all fiction creators for whose works FanFiction.net will not accept submissions, at the creators' request.
That's what CBS/Paramount could have done: ban all fan works in the history of ever. Instead, written fan fiction, audio plays, game mods, art, and a number of other categories of fan works are completely untouched by these rules.

Yes, Disney would snuff out a fan film that raised that much money. And they have every right to do so.
They could of, but I don't think it would be wise business strategy to alienate your entire target audience.

Well, I wasn't going to make it personal. Just illustrating that in the grand scheme of things, nobody gives a TRIBBLE about Axanar or Alec Peters or fanfilms in general to really put any kind dent in CBS Studios or Paramount.
I'd even go as far as to say 9 out of 10 people who see the new movie or upcoming TV show don't even know who Alec Peters is.

Disney, nothing. Warner Brothers once sent a C&D to a bunch of guys who were making a Middle-Earth mod for Skyrim, as if a mod for a single-player RPG is remotely similar in practice (not content) to their MMO Lord of the Rings Online.
Games Workshop is more like CBS. They enthusiastically supported a German Warhammer 40k fan film until somebody realized there was a problem with German copyright law that would cause 40k to pass into the public domain if they allowed the film to go forward, but they wouldn't let the creator of the 40k webcomic Turn Signals on a Land Raider sell a book of the comic so he could afford to keep making it (and it's a parody comic, so there was actually a decent fair use justification here).

I've been souring on Trek for a while now, though for the most part hanging in there.
I wasn't paying attention when this came out but now that I've looked into it I'm going to do what little I can to support Renegades and Axanar. Sometimes they are corny but they have heart. 100x better than the crapverse new garbage that is being done now. We saw the Renegades premier in Vegas last year and donated a tidy sum. Not sure what else I can do?
I see the crapverse stuff coming to STO as a harbinger of larger rumblings between cbs and paramount. It may not be the case. It may be that STO paid for a one time promotion. Time will tell. We'll probably know by September. The nature of the new show will reveal all. If it is set in crapverse I see a full on purge of real Trek to be replaced by new garbage. And a strict enforcement of these 'rules.'
I can tell you from personal experience how quickly threats of lawsuits sour you on a beloved book or movie. It was something I should have taken to court but had too much to lose at the time. I hope Renegades fights them and the fans watch as Walter and Nichelle are dragged into court and told they can't play their characters anymore.
Edit - will be a very interesting convention this year. I wonder what the Renegades will have to say on stage when they are asked about this? Will creation be ordered to silence them?

The first one's actually a pretty interesting story. GW was totally on board with Damnatus until they realized the copyright law problem and regretfully told the team to stop. Which was right after the film was finished. The team agreed not to release the film, then deliberately put the file on an unsecured computer so someone would steal it, and it was promptly uploaded to MegaUpload, and GW took no action because legally they had defended their copyright already.
Unfortunately the hosting site itself got hit with a big e-piracy indictment in 2012 and I haven't been able to find out if it's been re-uploaded anywhere.
On the other thing, that was different from Axanar: The author of TSOALR actually did ask for permission and was denied.
