TMP Klingons looked different from TOS Klingons not because Roddenberry wanted to introduce a virus that contained human genes which aggressively rewrote Klingon DNA, but because Klingons always looked that way.
It is a simple matter: when we're being told a story we each imagine the scenery differently. When different storytellers tell the same story they each tell it differently. When moviemakers tell the same story, not only do they show it differently, they go to great lengths to show the differences.
Compare the 1953 version of Titanic to the 2007 version. Under the premise of the OP, the newer version should look exactly like the older because both attempt to tell a story around the exact same historical event. But there are dozens of Titanic films of various quality, and all of them have a distinct look. Which one is right?
So the idea that a filmmaker would adhere to a design used in another's work is an idea which derives outside of real world experience.
And just because it looks different in the Historical Document doesn't mean it was different 'when it happened.' Their aesthetic didn't change, just the materials available to the historical reenactors.
I don't think the Titanic reference works well. In each film about Titanic the Titanic itself never changed to fit the times. By that logic the next Titanic film should star a Carnival Cruise line ship.
Ever see Poseidon Adventure?
But you are correct, and this is exactly the point I was making. The exact same ship was depicted differently in each movie. Even when seeking historical accuracy no two films did it the same.

I doubt they had to offer much. He seems to be happy to do stuff related to the brand. He's one of the actors who does regular con appearances.
He's a director. It's what he does for a living these days. All they need to do is offer him guild scale, plus possibly a small bump because he's good at it.
There's no more significance to Frakes directing episodes of DSC and Orville than there is to Joss Whedon directing both The Avengers and the new Justice League movie. You young whipper-snappers stay off my lawn! And back in my day Star Trek had three colors: black, white, and grey, and we watched it on our enormous 13" television sets which were built into a 4' cabinet and took a half hour to warm up before you could see anything, and we had to hold the rabbit ear antennas a certain way to get each of the three channels. And we liked it!
What were we talking about? Oh, yeah, my point was, the past needs to stay there. A clever homage to the past, as was done with the DS9 Tribble episode, is a good thing. But there's a lot of things from the past that can just stay there, thank you, and velour turtleneck uniforms are not the least among them.
We get our first look at Mary Chieffo, who plays Klingon Commander L’Rell, along with Chris Obi, who plays T’Kuvma, the leader of the Klingons (who we’ve seen before in photos and in the trailer).
The brief sidebar on Discovery from EW includes this new description of what the Klingons are up to:
This seems to be in line with previous accounts that the Klingons seen in the trailer – who are the subject of much discussion – are not your everyday Klingons, but specifically ‘ancient Klingons.’
Interesting...
Nah, that sounds too much like an explanation. Why do we want one of them when we can sob in rage about how much ST is now dead?

As long as you don't forget to trash CBS at every opportunity, and somehow blame JJ Abrams for it...
The Klingons will cause major intergalactic chaos in the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery.
The ridge-headed warrior race plays a huge role in the CBS All Access drama’s mysterious story, which is set during a Federation-Klingon cold war a decade before events in the original series.
Producers constructed a massive ship set, glimpsed here, that looks like an alien cathedral. At its helm is T’Kuvma (Chris Obi), the leader of an ancient Klingon house looking to unite his people, even if that means provoking a war with the Federation. By his side is L’Rell (Mary Chieffo), his Battle Deck Commander.
But the big question online that fans keep asking: Why did producers redesign the look of the Klingons?
Showrunner Aaron Harberts noted that original series showrunner Bryan Fuller was an advocate of updating the look of the Klingons and was involved in the redesign — and that the look of the Klingons has frequently changed over the franchise’s 52 years.
“In the different versions of Trek, the Klingons have never been completely consistent,” Harberts said. “We will introduce several different houses with different styles. Hopefully, fans will become more invested in the characters than worried about the redesign.”
In other words: BIjatlh ’e’ yImev! (Translation: Be quiet!)
Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead) as a brilliant Starfleet First Officer — the first human educated on Vulcan — who’s forced to make an impossibly difficult decision which impacts the entire Federation. The series also stars Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Shazad Latif, and Mary Wiseman.
So there's that...
Instead of helping set a consistent tone and look, they're pushing for more over-diversification.
At least they're doing it in a somewhat plausible way...
At this rate, the Klingons are becoming the Xindi-Light.
TOS Klingons were the Primates, What we know and love were the Arboreals, the Proto-Klingon Worf turned into was the Insectoid, and these are the Reptilians.
We just need a dead flying subspecies of Klingon to be the Avians, and a Pacific Islander Equivalent to be the Aquatics and we'll have the hexafecta!

No, we're not putting it down - we're going to send it to a farm upstate, where it can play with other superannuated tropes all day long!

1) "Planet of Hats" is a term that refers to a singular defining species characteristic in a fictional setting, such as the Roman planet, the Gangster Planet, or the Proud Warrior Race. It has nothing to do with ethnicities within that planet's dominant species.
2) I'm fairly certain that there are plenty of species that would like to contest the idea of no ethnic diversity, chief amongst them being the Vulcans (Spock vs Tuvok), the Xindi-Primates (Degra and his associate played by Tucker Smallwood), and even the Klingons (Martok vs Worf, who were light skinned and dark skinned Klingons, respectively).

The xindi are multiple species from the same original world, they are not ethnicities, an ethnicity is a variation within one species. Xindi aquatics & Xindi primates are not capable of interbreeding, every real ethnic variation of a species can interbreed.
Which is why I specifically mentioned two members of the Xindi Primates. Pay attention.
Planet of Hats also refers to presenting any species as an unending wall of sameness. All Romulans are sneaky lying & white skinned for example. All klingons are honor obsessed drunken & swarthy skinned warriors(and even the guys like Hertzler got a swarthy makeup job). Its just not any kind of a realistic portrayal of any species.
You just reworded the definition of PoH.
Also, swarthiness notwithstanding, there is a HUGE difference between the dark skin tone of someone like Worf and the lighter skin tone of Martok. You are intimating that the swarthiness (always loved that word, by the way) of Martok makes him ethnically identical to Worf, which is as ridiculous as saying that an Arab is ethnically identical to an African. It just isn't true.
Take out the obvious skin tone issues (because like it or not, they ARE vastly different), and you have the real Planet of Hats issue, in that the Klingons are largely portrayed as a culture of honor-obsessed warriors. Be upset about that.

I have to disagree with Azrael on this one. There's a big difference between ethnical diversity (which has been portrayed fairly prominently in various sci-fi settings before) and making a whole new (sub?)species. These 'Klingons' look very much like an attempt at the latter.
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
The Klingons have an interstellar empire just slightly smaller than the Federation. It obviously contains thousands of inhabited planets...
So perhaps, at some point, these ancestral Klingons interbred with other races enough to ever so slightly change their appearance (speaking of T’Kuvma here, who, despite stupid objections, looks exactly like every non-TOS Klingon ever and not L’Rell).
Alternatively the L’Rell style Klingons may be a subject race who would also be called Klingon (possible as they look significantly different from T'Kuvma and L’Rell's name isn't very Klingon) and I would easily expect everyone in the empire to be Klingons.
Or a second Klingon species on Kronos (like the Xindi species) who later became extinct whilst T'Kuvma's species survived.
Basically the existence of T'Kuvma shows they aren't just redesigning the Klingons for fun or else they would't have an instantly recognisable (except by idiots) modern TNG style Klingon around.

Not really. He has a wider nose. That's it.
The ridge design is well within line for TNG or DS9 as are the ears and teeth, the eye and chin details and overall colour is well within line for ID and above all they don't look anything like the far more alien TMP versions.
No exaggeration, give him a goatee and black lion hair and you would't bat an eyelid if he popped up in DS9.

Exactly. In addition, even if there was a situation where a cultural identity formed in such a way, it's still far from a monolithic culture.
The Klingons, as an example, pride themselves on their warrior culture. However, if they were indeed nothing but warriors, the Klingons would have died out a long time ago.
Why? Well, an army marches on its stomach, as they say. It's a statement that means a successful military unit should be well provisioned. If every Klingon was a warrior, who provides the food? Who builds the shelters? Who designs the weapons, armor, and ships? Who creates the uniforms?
Someone has to, otherwise we'd have a band of naked, unarmed, Klingons standing in an open field dreaming about fighting wars that they cannot even get to as they slowly die of starvation.
Basically, there is no such thing as a truly monolithic culture. Different roles must be taken in order make the civilization work.

4) For the love of Q please revamp Plasma Ground Weapons. They look like demented Supersoakers right now.
5) True Vanity Impulse and Deflector effects similar to Vanity Shields.
6) A greater payout for hitting T6 Reputations. Currently it takes more time and resources to get from T5 to T6 than it does to get from nothing to T5. Make that grind really pay out at the end.
7) Mirrorverse Refugee event similar to AoY/Delta/Gamma, complete with new Mirrorverse recruits for all factions.
8) Independent Faction, because yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me!
Things I want in STO:
1) More character customization options such as more clothing options, letting the toon complexion affect the entire body, not just the head. Also a true RGB color picker applied to all costume and appearance options, which would allow for true appearance customization and homogenous colors instead of "this same exact color looks vastly different on two different pieces."

It looks like that months old picture with the "Klingons" are actually Klingons even if they are from a few centuries or millennia ago.
Which is why I specifically mentioned two members of the Xindi Primates. Pay attention.

Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Aww, come on. You are being spiteful out of principle on that one, though. T'Kuvma has enough to resemble the known Klingo look but is different enough to legitimately question the same, that's not idiotism. Isn't there a healthy middle-ground to take?

I mean we have already seen it in history on a smaller scale, where isolated social groups and eventually villages that had their own local cultures and values eventually melt together and instead form a national cultural identity. So why not on a planetary scale?

My character Tsin'xing
