Meh, if you REALLY grind as hard as you can you can get it done in 12. :P It's not really a gift... I don't understand why people expect it to be free....
ummm, cause they have always been free, the "anniversary" event has always been a thank you, not a look, heres more work.. but I have a feeling your trolling so yeah...

It used to be a free gift every year. Now they still call it a free gift, but no longer free and no longer a gift. Hence the whine.
If you're given a gift, then told to either pay for it or work it off, would you not be offended?
Cryptic wouldn't have taken so much flak had they just been honest and said "There's no free gift this year, but here's another rep grind for a ship we wanted to test out."
ummm, cause they have always been free, the "anniversary" event has always been a thank you, not a look, heres more work.. but I have a feeling your trolling so yeah...
The first anniversary event didn't have a ship reward.
It wasn't until the second that the "free" ships got added. Even then it was a pretty long mission. It wasn't like you just got given the Oddy/Bortas. You had to work for it. :P Then the third one, it had a ship, but it's not a very special ship. kinda boring really. The mission was loads of fun though, that was the real "gift" from the third anniversary.
It's free in that you don't have to pay any in game resource for it. And it's quicker to get than a Chel Grett.

yes, but you could complete the 2cnd year in a day, in one sitting, in one mission..
you could get the ambassador in one mission, one day, one sitting.. and the mission was designed more for story, than the grind.. I bet the mission (s) youll have to do 15 times is pretty lame.. as is all the super grind repeater missions..
Until I read this thread I didn't know that I could get last year's anniversary ship on my other alts by running the storyline because...I've been so busy with all the other GRINDING.
I understand that they want us to log on for 15 days. Fine, have some other promotion. But don't do it to the anniversary.
So, what storyline is this, how do I access it, and what was the reward? Can we still do this?

Being difficult or not is not the point.
We have to grind all years (fleet, rep,...). We have to grind for the ship in winter, and in summer. Fine.
But during the anniversary, we are used to just enjoy a single mission, and have a reward for it. It's a break in all the grinding we have to do. A way the devs have to thanks the players.
Transforming the anniversary into a grind make it cheap content instead of a "thank you". And I don't like it. Will I grind ? Yes sure, but as I said, that's not the point.
It's like offering a blender to your GF. Most of them will hate that, because it can be seen as a way to tell her "you should cook more". I feel the same way with this grindversary, I'm offered a "gift", but in the end, it's not really a gift in the dev's mind, but a way to add content.

grinding costs nothing but my time. my time is more valuable than money. I don't get why games became jobs for players. It's supposed to be fun, not forced boring grinds over and over, on top of the existing daily grinds already in the game (plus the horrid christmas grind we just finished). All this grinding to get an anniversary ship that wouldn't even exist to begin with, without the loyal playbase. They should be giving us the ships for free without the time cost or anything else, and saying "thank you players, for keeping us employed by playing our game" If they want more money, make more clothing, ship materials, HAIRSTYLES (really need these) and put it on the cstore.

Yeah all that you said and the stuff I said too. I remember when Atari was in control, in Champions Online we got new costume parts all the time and other things. When Perfect World took over.. well the last outfit i bought years ago, is still the newest outfit.
On a side note, I wish they'd make some of those new hairstyles the romulans have available for everyone, there's a couple long ones I'm specifically thinking of,.
Although you could come up with 20k fleet credits, 4 fleet modules and access to a T3 shipyard and get the Fleet version

Either way if they change the mission parameters to acquire the anniversary ship or not, I think the communities response after additional Dev blogs come out on Monday should be interesting reading.
people keep moaning about grinding, I just don't see it.
I have done fleet stuff and all the reps and events and none of it seems like a grind to me.
all I see is playing the game for fun and getting rewards in the process.
if I just got all of the rewards without having to play for them there wouldn't be much point in playing the game in the first place.
the c-store giveaways are a different matter, these are items that you would normally have to buy and thanks to their generosity they are giving them to us free but all other stuff that I have from the game I have had to play to get in one way or another.
weather I play a mission once or 100 times is no matter its just playing the game for a set reward and when I play I have fun no matter how many times I have to repeat a certain mission for a certain reward.
the summer and winter events were no different did we not have to repeat a task to get those ships and I am sure there are plenty that would say they had to grind to get the Christmas gift so how is this any different,
so repeating a mission to get a gift is hardly unprecedented.
so last year they give us the reward for playing through one mission that took me about 1 hour from start to finish per character with loading and travel time included, so this year they have given us a mission that will take 5 minutes max that we do 15 times that's 75 minutes max most likely a lot less per character I hardly think that is anything to get wound up over.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
As already stated by branflakes, this anniversary will not be a grindfest. On completion of the FE once, you will be rewarded with 400 free marks, leaving only 600 more to get. Q's mission on averageon an underpopulated in-house test server will take no more than 3 - 5 minutes to complete where upon completion you will receive a further 40 marks, meaning it will only take 15 out of the 25 days of the event.
Reality may trump in house testing when thousand of players try to get into the limited number of Academy instances to run the Mini-Q mission, hopefully the other mission will not be at the academy also.
Grinfest maybe the wrong word but Limited-time availability to receive the ship means scheduling time to run the necessary missions on as many characters as you want the ship on before it is no longer available. though there usually is the option to spend real money and obtain the ship if say you were unable to log in for 2 weeks which has happened recently due to game glitches I believe. Honestly if the ship was available anytime during the next couple of months using the quoted criteria I don't think most people would be so annoyed by it.
like this currently randomly occurring Glitch kinda hard to run any mission when that occurs.

Here is my response to the anniversary "not grinfest" grind; 1800 lobi sitting in my bank. I will do the story on three toons and the lobis to close out, then write off this anniversary as a non-event moment to be quickly forgotten. No purchase of the ship when it hits Z-store (which it will) and no fleet purchase of this not grinfest grind ship

This year it's 1 episode of undetermined length for 400 + 15 missions of undetermined length for 40 each... if it follows your example, that would end up at 60 minutes + 75 minutes, for a total of 2 hours 15 minutes per character. So, if you're F2P you'd have 3 character slots and you'd end up spending 6 hours 45 minutes of your game time doing missions just so that you could go do the missions you actually want to play in the new ships. If you spent some Zen to buy more character slots, say +4, you'd need to spend another 9 hours of game time to get those characters the ships too...
That's the real crux of the issue... and the reason some folks would rather pass up the ship and go play the actual game. For some, it's simply not worth taking the single-mission Anniversary Event from prior years and adding 15 days of running the same little minigame mission over and over. Having this follow on the heels of the Winter Event just makes it less inspiring, since we just got a new ship with 10 consoles and a new mechanic.
I'm just fine with last year's single mission for a 9-console ship plus paying for Fleet Ship Modules if I want the "full version", but adding the 15 days (12.5 if you milk the cooldown) just took the ships from amazing to meh. The Dev Blog about the ships' development was interesting, though, and the Pre-Anniversary Giveaway is nice whether or not I already have the toys they hand out... but right now I just don't have the time or even inclination to do another grind. To those that do, I salute you.
With each passing day I wonder if I stepped into an alternate reality. The Cubs win the world series. Donald Trump is President. Britain leaves the EU. STO gets a dedicated PvP season. Engineers are "out of control" in STO.
Like most everything else in this game, it is free and all you have to do to get it is play the game for a bit. If you have a multitude of characters to get this stuff for, that is your business and not really Cryptic's problem.
"So my fun is wrong?"
No. Your fun makes everyone else's fun wrong by default.
I really dont mind a bit of limited grind for it. I would much rather get them after playing the episode alone, but at the same time a short 2-5 min daily is not going to bother me. They dont have to give away free ships at all, and these one have a few bells and whistles on them.
This game is still a business, and during the anniversary they are giving away a free episode, a free 8.5 update, a star trek VO and 3 free ships with new game mechanics plus what ever else comes with the anniversary and no one has to pay a penny if they dont want to. How much does all that cost to make? a lot i guess and they are going to want some kind of return on it.
How many people log in get all that stuff and then log out? probably quite a few. If they cant force people to pay then the next best thing from their perspective is to get people to log in multiple times. There is probably some metric that supports it and shows they then get people playing more, and subsequently paying more and helping the game in the long run.
from a business perspective, it makes sense. yes its going to be might annoying for people with 10+ characters, but ive never understand why people feel the need to get a ship on every one, especially when they know they wont use it on all. You dont have to own something on every characters because it is there.

I guess part of the reason people feel compelled to get those limited-time ships is exactly that, limited-time. It creates a sense of urgency, much like those tv channels that try to sell you useless kitchen appliances and go on about having only 50 left......
I'm sitting on 20 characters now, of course I have no plans of using those anniversary ships on all of them, right now I'm not even sure I will use even one, but still, I can never go back and get the ship later on.
The Amabassador deal was sweet, I got a subpar ship for free which ended up in my bank and then I got the fleet version. That cost me 4 modules. I'm fine with that.
Even the Obelisk "deal" was acceptable, if not ideal.
I have to say I'm disappointed somewhat with the fact a grind has come to the anniversary. I won't grind the ship unless it's magical abilities includes making me pancakes while giving me a massage. I didn't even grind the winter event and have grinder's remorse for grinding the Risa ship.
On the other hand I can sort of understand why they keep calling it "free." It's as free as you are right now. You have freedom of speech but you can't say certain things on these forums or in game without getting banned. It really depends on what the meaning of the word "free" is.
Still, it really is a sour note that the Anniversary is getting a grind so close to the last grind. And Q was just here. He's supposed to be a special guest. But his overuse is really wearing down his special factor.
Cheers from Antonio Valerio Cortez III, Half-Celestial Archduke of the Free Marches Confederacy.

I wouldn't mind the grind if the missions were at least fun. But given Cryptic's track record with these, it will be as boring as watching paint dry after the first few runs. I suspect we'll have the shell game again, which was boring as well as mildly annoying last year. I'm sure whatever the other mission is will be more of the same.
Unless this thing has at least one Hanger, I personally won't even bother with running any of the Anniversary missions even once. I've always preferred the "pet class" in any MMO I've tried and carriers best fit my personal play style in STO.
I'm usually one of those who dont use the forums, or if at all only "lurk" and read, but this has me miffed enough to leave a short reply.
Gonna keep it short because if i post half of what im thinking it could get me into trouble.
So i'll just say this, Way to go Cryptic for turning what was in past years and should continue to be, a celebration of STO and longevity of the game into "work" and a "grind". Nice way to suck the fun out of something.
I'm also wondering if each of these new Science Hybrids vessels will also include there Factions unique abilities?
Meaning will the Romulan version come with the Battle Cloak and Singularity Cores?
The KDF version come with a standard Cloaking Device?
Will the Fed version not have any of the above :P
Has I've stated in some of my past post, I would not have a problem with grinding for these new vessels if it was not made part of the Anniversary Event.
We Grind out so much stuff in STO year after year with new Grind being added all the time.
The Anniversary Even has always been a nice break from the Grind with a mostly story driven FE and a nice reward upon its completion that I've always viewed has a thank you for sticking around from Cryptic.
Grind your Reps, Grind your Star Bases, Grind your Spires, Grind your Mines, Grind the clothes on your back and now has a thank you for all that Grinding you can also Grind your Anniversary gift.
I'd rather have a small gadget or outfit along the lines of Worff's band, or the yesterdays Enterprise-belt, than having to grind(!), even only for one measly character. A ship? Meh. for celebration of STO, I wouldn't mind something smaller trivial thing.
Grinding... ...just the word alone... ...well, at least it is a grind, not about dilithium or marks. Oh, wait...

Give me fun, and makework is never fun.
Gonna keep it short because if i post half of what im thinking it could get me into trouble.
So i'll just say this, Way to go Cryptic for turning what was in past years and should continue to be, a celebration of STO and longevity of the game into "work" and a "grind". Nice way to suck the fun out of something.
Grind your Reps, Grind your Star Bases, Grind your Spires, Grind your Mines, Grind the clothes on your back and now has a thank you for all that Grinding you can also Grind your Anniversary gift.
ain't nobody got time for that
Grinding... ...just the word alone... ...well, at least it is a grind, not about dilithium or marks. Oh, wait...
