This fatal error makes me glad that I did not pay anything to this game for anything.

if you have an old 3d card (dx9 card), put it instead of your modern card. Installe dx9.0 c from microsoft, try to launch the game; if everything is ok. remove your old card and replace it by your modern card. Now your modern card should use dx9 properly. Don't even try to use dx11 with STO, I have an ati 7700 hd, and the ingame dx11 doens't work at all.

btw, you must remove and change your 3d card drivers, each time; I know this boring: you can use driver uninstaller: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

btw, I had the same problem before than I do what I have written above. (luck or not I don' know, i'm not a computer specialist :p)

so cryptic and perfectworld still haven't fixed this issue or even bothered to resolve it huh?

I just added the following in the Command Line in the options "add -d3d9" without the quotes and it started working for me. No more direct3d crashes since.

honestly i don't know if they have closed this thread or not but this direct3d fatal error issue is still affecting a lot of us and perfectworld entertainment hasn't bothered to even fix it no matter how hard we try to tell them about it. has anyone or does anyone have an honest to god fix for this for those of us who have older video cards and are using windows 10 so that we can actually get into game and be able to play without feeling as if we've been completely screwed over by cryptic and peferct world entertainment?

The "Device Removed" error happens whet you have dual graphic noteboks or PC with integrated gpu active and a PCI-e video card, you just need to disable the integrated one and it wil work, it seems the game cannot longer select the correct card, and create a shader cache for the incorrect video card, so, when the discrete card start the rendering process, wrong instruccions gets received and the game crash.

In every single computer i tried this it worked (except noteboks, you canot disable de integrated video card)

no idea what your saying here buddy and it seems like there is no fix mentioned so whatever you just said is meaningless

well, well, I still have this problem even if it occurs only in some locations; Kobali and now the mission Sunrise

    http://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/1218897/someone-has-this-problem

btw, dx9 doesn't work, if you have win7 64 with dx11 installed and also dx9.

quote from a closed thread, the content is more appropriate for this one :)

    my computer: (not a laptop)
    windows 7 64bits
intel dual core i3-3240 3,4 ghz
AMD ATI radeon HD 7700 (not overcloked by myself, but I don't know if the card was overclocked by the manufacturer)
    RAM: 8 go
@Seaofsorrows. It's definitely some type of driver problem, the best I can recommend without knowing more is to completely remove all your video drivers and start fresh. I would recommend you do this using a display driver cleaner program like Display Driver Uninstaller 16.1.0.0.

done, and I had the same problem, unable to finish "Sunrise", but no crash, the screen becomes black and I had to go back to my destop and close manually STO.
I tried with the safe mode, and I was able to finish Sunrise, but when I wanted to approach ds9, bam! black screen again. so, I use again my old gameprefs, and for now no problems. I was able to do "uneasy allies" without problems. however, i have lowered some settings (shadows, lighting, occlusion ...)
btw, like I used the more recent AMD drivers with problems, I use again the catalyst 15.7.1, because I never had problems with this driver.

I checked also my GPU with afterburner and kombustor. And everything seems ok, temperature always under 70°c, fan speed never over 50. the only problem was with AAA 8x ( a little bit of lag), so in game I have lowered this setting to 4.
@Seaofsorrows. If you're running on a system with multiple display options it might also help to disable the one you don't use either in your BIOS or in Device Manager. You can look in your Device Manager under 'Display Adapters' and see if there is more then one option listed (perhaps your video card and your onboard graphics.) If so, try right clicking on the onboard graphics and selecting 'Disable.' The Device Removed error usually indicates that the computer for some reason attempted to switch video output devices and failed to do so.

    i'm going to try, thx.
btw, the onboard graphics is not listed, I have only my ATI HD 7700.

    should I check the BIOS?

the strange thing is that I was able to do the mission "sunrise" and the 3 latest missions on kobali, 1 week ago; and now bam! problems; i don't understand while I have made no changes.

Yeah, I would look and see if it's listed in the BIOS. The CPU you are using has an integrated Intel HD 2500 Graphics chip, I'm wondering if maybe for some reason it's trying to switch over to that or getting confused somehow. Usually the graphics on the chip isn't a problem though, it's more common in systems that have integrated graphics in the MB Northbridge.

It is very strange that this just started recently, it seems on the surface to be a driver issue, but if the driver has remained the same, then perhaps it is something with STO since it's the only thing that's changed. I'll look around and think on it, see if I can come up with any more suggestions.

Quite the mystery we have here. :)

    from an othe forum:
    Integrated Graphics Configuration
Press <Enter> to enter the sub-menu.
    Initiate Graphic Adapter
Choose which adapter you wish to make the primary option
    [IGD] Integrated Graphics Display
    [PEG] PCI-Express Graphics Device
    Integrated Graphics Share Memory
The system shares memory to the onboard graphics. This setting controls the exact
memory size shared to the onboard graphics.
    DVMT Memory
Specify the size of DVMT memory to allocate for video memory.
    IGD Multi-Monitor
Enables both integrated and discrete graphics at the same time. When disabled, it
will default to Initiated Graphics Adapter selection.

    my settings are:

    initiate graphic adapter [PEG]
    IGD Multi-monitor [disabled]

the onboard graphics was already disabled, that means that the problem comes from something else. :s
I'll look around and think on it, see if I can come up with any more suggestions.

    thx.

even if I was not interested by the current event, I have a TOS toon, now level 60. I did all the missions without problems until now. like I said, this problem is occurred since the 2 last patches (july 6 or july 12)

wooho, something new. now I don't have errors, in fact i have nothing; the game freezes and that: http://imgur.com/a/vm75O

oh! no it is not a joke. when the game freezes, I have really a black screen on nothing else.
    - dx9, black screen every 5-10 mins, the game doesn't crash but it is barely playable
    - dx9ex, black screen, this can happen at every moment; only thing to do, back to the desktop, right click on the game client, and close.
    - dx11, direct3d error. big crash, PC reboot necessary

i don't know what you have done since 3-4 patches, but before them I hadn't problems
