If G-X got cloak for free, nothing would change. The ship is still subpar in current STO.
"Cryptic Studio’s Jack Emmert (2010): Microtransactions are the biggest bunch of nonsense. I like paying one fee and not worrying about it – like my cellphone. The world’s biggest MMO isn’t item based, even though the black market item GDP is bigger than Russia … microtransactions make me want to die.”
I think they should make the cloaking device something you can buy for all factions at the Romulan rep store
except in 1 ship it is mostly useless - that being the B'Rel
Most Feds complaining about the clock are just basing their experience off of what happens in Ker'rat
In 9/10 PvP matches against Fed players - KDF players come at them uncloaked
Not many KDF players use the cloak in PvP - so I don't think most Fed players know how useless it is.
If they did some Fed vs KDF PvP they would see.
Ignore Ker'rat - it's just a silly zone.
In instanced PvP while flying BoPs or Raptors, I generally cloak, move toward enemy, attack in coordination with others, and just stay uncloaked. Only time I re-cloak regularly is if I'm against a not-so-good team. Most of the time, trying to get away to re-cloak is a waste of time, and you'll probably get chased anyways. Not worth the risk.
Ker'rat is where the cloaking devices thrive, and only when Fed players don't know enough to keep an eye out and keep using sensor scans and whatnot.
My PvP toon is Krov, of The House of Snoo. Beware of my Hegh'ta of doom.
Keep the cloaking devices for the Klingons, but it would be nice if they'd take the console away and just make cloaking an innate ability for the Gal-X and Defiant Retrofit. They did the same thing with the Excelsior's transwarp drive.
On a different note it would be cool if we got a ship with a phasing cloak console some time, that's an actual canon cloaking device that the Federation developed. A short-term cloak with the phasing invulnerability that the Kar'fi has, basically.
I dont know if it has been mentioned - but the Enterprise eps of the mirror universe the enterprise has a stolen cloak which they use to sneak into the Tholin base holding the TOS era Connie - Defiant.
One of the best episodes of ENT and what the STO anniversary FE was based on.
Still the cloak is not as useful as Fed players think it is.
Outside of Ker rat - you will barely see it in use.
STO made clear the Treaty of Algeron is in effect, the only exclusions are the Galaxy-X and the Defiant ... you want a cloaking device, buy one of them.
I find the cloak useful, in khitomer and cure you can ambush spawns.
Just park up your defiant or gal x, cloak and wait for the spawns, when they get into range hit your tac abilities, cloak and give them the surprise of their life as you fire as you decloak, which incidentally boosts the damage you inflict.
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

I think we should be thankful for the short term Cloak from the Romulan tier 5 active power.
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.
What's my position?
That people should know what they're screaming about!
(paraphrased from "The Newsroom)
The rest is irrelevant as well, novels are non-canon and so are videogames.
The USS Revan used a multi-adaptive shielding to avoid being detected by the Borg (that dont go look out the window to see if there is something following them).
End of discussion.
I wonder what startrek online is hmmmmm. Videogame? naaaaa couldn't be :P
Second its raven revan was a sith lord from starwars lol

They're mindless NPCs, you can't 'surprise' them. 'Surprise' only works in PvP.
Also, that attack boost is about 5 seconds long. Useful for the initial alphastrike, but not much more than that. I don't bother cloaking in PvE unless I'm trying to shake off some aggro.
My PvP toon is Krov, of The House of Snoo. Beware of my Hegh'ta of doom.
Honestly I don't care about the cloak one way or another. I don't really PVP so for me it is just a wasted console slot something more effective/better could be slotted there.
As to the Federation, it's pretty clear the Federation in this game has taken on a more military type role. Overally it's pretty stupid on their part to be worried about what the Romulans/Klingons care about if they have a cloaking device or are able to get their ships to cloak. Both factions would just be pissy because they no longer have that edge in battle/surprise. From a strategic/tactical standpoint, the Feds are a bunch of idiots for not having their own cloaking technology.
I am strictly speaking from a strategic standpoint, I understand the canon of the game and ST in general, just saying it's incredibly stupid for the Feds to auto-gimp themselves by honoring the treaty in the first place and even now that the planet has been destroyed.
Another curious thought at this point now is why haven't the Borg learned to cloak their ships? You would think after all this assimilated tech they would know how to do that. Imagine a fleet of cloaked Cubes...but I guess that would be the end of STO as we know it.

The question isn't whether or not they can. It's whether or not it'd be an efficient use of their resources to do so.
The Borg probably wouldn't try and cloak their giant Cubes not because they couldn't, but because, why bother? It's still a Borg Cube, and putting aside the game for the moment, that's still a very powerful ship in it's own right.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.
Dunno why everyone wants a freaking cloaking device.
A) The only cloak thats really worth a TRIBBLE is the BoP's battle cloak. Which is exclusively for those ships and they sacrifice quite a bit for having it.
There are many far better and beneficial consoles to use in that slot over a cloak that you can only use when out of Red Alert. And if your cloaking a lot, then your not doing much work.

Good point with the BoPs. The class sacrifices a fair bit in the stats in order to justify having a battlecloak, which isn't even all that awesome in most situations. It's why I'm in favor of boosting a few select stats (speed modifier being one). It only really shines in Ker'rat, because it's a free-flowing PvP zone, not an instanced zone with a strict limitation on number of players.
If the Federation players want a battlecloak, then it should be on a ship that's gimped in a similar manner to the BoPs. Less hull, less shields, fewer weapon slots, etc.
My PvP toon is Krov, of The House of Snoo. Beware of my Hegh'ta of doom.
This thread is always amazing. Take one power of very, very limited use. Give it to one side. Give an even more limited version to the other side. Watch both sides fight vehemently about how broken things are/would be, even tho they are talking about the weakest ability in the game...
If cloak was worth a damn, people would load MES. They don't. The only thing it is useful for is the short lived damage boost. There are plenty of other damage boosts out there, the cloak one is a non issue. If you aren't a BoP you get it once per engagement. If your a BoP you risk death with your shields down.
Cloaking is fun. Cloaking is cool. Cloaking is about as useful as mammaries on a male bovine. Give them away I say, fun > all.
I once again match my character. Behold the power of PINK!
Because D'Tan isn't a secretive douche who would rather turn down help than give something in return. Also this is the NEW romulan faction not the old one which is all menacing and stuff you guys can't seem to get that apparently.
Wait... they're adding a Romulan faction and it won't be the least bit enigmatic or menacing? Fail.

It's not breaking canon. It's 30 years in the future, and a lot can happen in that time.
As to the Romulan Empire, there's no real indication that a new faction would be the same one D'tan is part of. There are still plenty of factions in the Empire, and I doubt most Romulans would want to follow someone as benign anyway. I have a few reasons, too.
1. If the playable Romulan faction is led by D'tan, then there is no viable reason for Fed vs Romulan or Fed vs Klingon pvp. D'tan has asked for help from both, and existing players are doing dailies there and earning rewards with that reputation system.
2. D'tan does not speak for the entire Empire, and those of you who have done the Reputation rewards know that he is already receiving opposition from both inside and outside the Empire. The Reunification Movement is equivalent to the hippies of the 60's. They may have had a lot of visibility, but not everyone liked or agreed with them, and a lot of people hated them.
3. The Reunification Movement does not have control of the majority of Romulan resources. That's why they need the Federation and Klingons to help them, because the fleet is controlled by Admirals or Senators, or whoever it is at the moment.
Whoever leads the Romulan faction will need to either be Praetor / Emperor, or at least an Admiral (such as Admiral Quinn for the Federation). D'tan doesn't really fit the role in character, or in the amount of power he wields.
As to the Romulan Empire, there's no real indication that a new faction would be the same one D'tan is part of. {snip}
Hello, Captains,
The topic is cloaking device. Please stay on topic. If you have a different topic you'd like to talk about, please feel free to start a new thread.
If you'd all like to stop talking about cloaking devices (I know I would) then letting the thread die a natural death would be merciful.
Thank you!
