"Diversity" is not an end unto itself. I personally do not care about anyone's desire to be a unique little snowflake, and I'm actually really tired of stupid n00bs experimenting with sub-optimal builds in STFs.
Although, to be fair, this is how you find something truely magical that works.
Ever since one of my "sub-optimal" builds worked out I've enjoyed critting borg cubes for 300k+ as an engineer. I just wish I had a tac captain I could put the build in the hands of lol .
I rate the OTT survivability of escorts as a problem. As do a lot of people. As does almost any escort pilot who is being honest.
Great! Then let's do something about Escorts, and not drag everyone else down in the process (and yes, I fly escorts too).
Besides, as I already outlined elsewhere, I still believe the true problem with Escorts -- or the game at large, rather -- is not that they can defend themselves, per se, but that every ship, from very small to very big, can use the same weaponry, with the same DPS, and the same accuracy. I tend to bring it up often, but in EVE they solved this much more elegantly: big vessels, like battleships, can dish out tons of DPS, with bigger weapons, but they are less accurate against smaller targets. And, vice versa, small ships, like frigates, use smaller weapons, thus doing less DSP, but are highly accurate against smaller things. Because STO is basically a dummied-down version of EVE, we're de facto now seeing the adverse affects of having Escorts being able to fit the same weapons as cruisers, as 'smaller' no longer matters. To picture it: a human carrying a bazooka is fine; a mosquite packing a same-sized one is ludicrously disproportionate.
Snivel to me about my engscort's survivability when I can rely on every STF pug team to have an aggro tank and a heal boat. Until then, I absolutely need the amount of self-reliant resistance and healing I have.

Do you though? I fly engscort too any I must say I almost never use Aux2Sif or Miracle Worker. I think I have too many heals.
I don't run AuxtoSIF, and Miracle Worker is my rarely-used "oh TRIBBLE" button. But that 3-piece borg set with hull and shield heals, that was my bread and butter.
Do you though? I fly engscort too any I must say I almost never use Aux2Sif or Miracle Worker. I think I have too many heals.
I fly engscort too (love that word, btw), and there's no doubt it can tank way too well. The occassional critting invisitorp notwhithstanding, word in missions is "Kira doesn't die!" And I can take my Mobius to Wave 7 of No Win, and *still* live to tell about it. And, come to think of it, I don't even have the Borg set on it, lol (full MACO, currently, as I wanted to try out the Heavy Graviton Beam in practice).
So, yeah, let's whack Escorts with the nerf-bat a bit! But don't harm everyone else, just to get to the Escort.
I don't run AuxtoSIF, and Miracle Worker is my rarely-used "oh TRIBBLE" button. But that 3-piece borg set with hull and shield heals, that was my bread and butter.
I'm not trying to be offensive but that is exactly why it needed changing. I suspect you were getting all the benefits of using the borg set (the incredible set bonus heals) without having to pay the price (using a low capacity / kinda sub-par shield).
I think the shield being fairly poor was always supposed to be the balance for getting the nice set bonuses. In reality the set bonuses are practically TSS 2 and HE 1. I know you cant choose when they go off but a set that gives any ship an extra lt science BO slot really should have a serious drawback.
Your ship healing / damage capabilities are supposed to be dependant on your BO and captain skills. As it is with things like Borg 2 piece set bonus hull heal, Borg 3 piece set bonus shield heal, Brace For Impace Doff heal etc no one actually needs to take heals on their BOs, which you should if you want to survive long enough to do any damage.
And since running 2x Tactical Team is really only practical on ensign positions (can't really expect people to sacrifice things like THY2/BO2, just for having shields), we're *again* looking at a major nerf.
Its a skill that should have never existed as it is... the dev that created it should have been fired... oh wait ya he quit before the patch even hit. lol
Call it NERF what ever you want... people cry nerf nerf thinking its some horrible word that will auto win them an argument.
Tac Team is bad for the game as it is right now... bottom line. It needs to have its effect reduced. Call it a nerf if you like... the word doesn't offend me. It also doesn't make people think your right cause you use it like a curse word. lol
The question is, of course, why? Why do you want everything nerfed so much? Is it some sort of resentment/mockery towards 'carebears' who have it too easy? I'm asking seriously, cuz I don't really understand where this desire to purposely harm people's game comes from. And yes, from crippling the Borg set, to decoupling shield distribution from TT, to gravely reducing the effectiveness of shield distro doffs, this nerfing streak will hurt the game *incredibly* so (now you understand why I'm so set against this Borg set nerf, as it's part of a whole unnerving nerfing packagge deal). Maybe it won't harm you. Word goes you're one of the most skilled pilots around; so you'll probably be fine. But for the other 99%, merrily doing their PvE thing, with Cryptic already turning up the DPS heat, in preparation of Season 7, all this severe nerfing just means people will die a lot faster. Now, where's the fun in that? Can't we just stipulate you're the better pilot, and would survive most nerfs (no sarcasm intended), and then you just stop trying to break the game for everyone else at every turn?
Honesty the game existed for almost 2 years with... tac team that did not auto distribute... with out shield distro doffs... and with out a borg set.
People did just fine... and to be quite honest the balance of Dmg Vs Healing skills was much more in line... good matches with good teams and great healers lasted about 30 min... now the same matches will simply not end. (That is no exageration... in the last month alone I have been in at least 5 matches that we have simply called at around the hour mark with scores like 3 2... and honesty those matches aren't even heal heavy both sides had at least 2 escorts... its honesty a joke... 2 teams that understand what they are doing will drag matches out to a point no one wants to be there anymore.)
I don't mean to ruin anyones game and frankly I don't see how bringing the stuff that is obviously causing the issues into line... No one needs tac team for stfs no matter what they think. (well ok its nice to clear assimilated debuff lol)... I have also don't want to see those skills leave the game... I just want to see them adjusted so that one ship can't load 3 doffs + 2 lowbie skills and tank better then the games dedicated tank. That is what happens with BFI + BORG + Tac team... my escort rocking 2 ensign skills and nothing else can tank gates, tac cubes, and entire 5 man focus fire for far to long... frankly its boring. Its also a major imbalance that destroys the team game for both pvp and pve.
Trust me we will all be fine with out Borg 3 Piece + maco... honesty I threw an aegis set back on my bop today to play around with it and forgot how much I love that set. I completed a round of STFS... a couple arena matches... and spent a couple hours in kerrat in between.... I respawned a total of 1 time.
Borg + Maco was to good yes, and toning it down slightly (lets be honest the loss of the shield heal with out the shield on isn't game breaking) isn't going to mess up anyones game really.
Great! Then let's do something about Escorts, and not drag everyone else down in the process (and yes, I fly escorts too).
Although the issue right now is magnified by the escort... it is no less an issue for cruisers and sci ships.
Honesty if they did something like building a -20% healing penalty into escorts or something... yes it would mostly solve the issue regarding escort tanking... however I think if where being honest we would all simply realize it would just mean ships like the galor would be the way to go... 90% of the escort dps with out the penalty.
No the only way to correct the issue is to solve the real issue... and its simple.
3 years of power and item creep has upset heal / dps balance to a point where real heal ships are pointless in PvE... and in PvP, a team really only needs one to catch spikes.
The solution may be painful for some who like the builds they have the way they are... but I think if we are all honest with ourselves its clear what needs to happen... we have to pull out that naughty N word Nerf.... yes there are 3 Power Creep Items and Skills that need adjusting and I don't even think there is any argument about what 3 are the worst offenders. The only argument to have really is how exactly to reduce there effective values while still allowing the intent of the skill to remain.
I think Cryptic is doing a good job with the borg set... people can still run there hybrid combo and only really give up part of the heal set... and the heal set can still exist in its entirety if you choose... its a question of opportunity cost. I think it was an elegant solution... and I approve it 110%.
Tac Team and BFI doffs... more forum wars will happen over them... in the end Cryptic will do something about both of them pretty soon... so I hope no one is to shocked to see it happen when it does.

Low-capacity shields are all but useless on escorts. Even moderate spike damage will sometimes one-shot me if I don't run a high-cap shield. So, telling me I shouldn't be able to combine the borg set shield regen with a high-cap shield is effectively saying I should not use the borg set for shield regen at all.
I still have the hull regeneration, so it's not a total loss. But it's a load of fantasy land horsehockey to tell people in escorts that they should depend more on others for healing, because teamwork is so unreliable that there's no point in even mentioning it. So people who also want the hull regen nerfed just plain hate escorts for no rational cause.

You know in most MMOs you can't do any "runs" with out a proper team makeup... Pugging runs in most MMOs also ends up being not so bad. Mostly players adjust and learn from failure. To be honest STO doesn't let people fail enough. Even terrible rainbow builds will make it through STFS... and one good escort on the team will win them the optional.
I would like to see STO become more like a traditional MMO where even setting up a pug run would require a proper team at least somewhat... but thats a pipe dream I know... we won't ever get that game.
Wouldn't it be great though if the current Que System was thrown out... and replaced with a Team Finder tool... a tool that had a game wide chat... and a Auto team setup tool that would place people on teams based on what they set as a build description in there settings... Tank / DPS / Heals / CC ... Anyway again will never happen in this game, its a shame they didn't go that way 2 years ago though.
Its a skill that should have never existed as it is... the dev that created it should have been fired... oh wait ya he quit before the patch even hit. lol

It actually just needs to be removed outright, and they need to put a few more viable tac skills at the ensign level.
I don't think Tac Team is overpowered, the effect only holds for 10 seconds, and to get rid of the most things you need either science team or hazard emitters.
People did just fine... and to be quite honest the balance of Dmg Vs Healing skills was much more in line... good matches with good teams and great healers lasted about 30 min... now the same matches will simply not end. Oh, that's true alright. PvP matches these days are usually won because someone finally got bored and left the match.
Problem, of course, is: 99% of this game's population isn't in your PvP matches. With invisi-torps, and there already being signs of NPCs doing more damage now, people will need ere more tank than less.
Borg + Maco was to good yes, and toning it down slightly (lets be honest the loss of the shield heal with out the shield on isn't game breaking) isn't going to mess up anyones game really.
Perhaps not, but crippling the Borg set, decoupling shield distribution from TT, and gravely reducing the effectiveness of shield distro doffs, all of these things put together *will* dramatically impact the game, for the negative. We're not just talking about one innocuous Borg nerfie, but about you wanting to significantly reduce healing across the entire board.
Honesty if they did something like building a -20% healing penalty into escorts or something... yes it would mostly solve the issue regarding escort tanking... however I think if where being honest we would all simply realize it would just mean ships like the galor would be the way to go... 90% of the escort dps with out the penalty.
Funny you're making one of my earlier cases here: even just *talking* about nerfing X already has you set your eyes on the next best thing in line, Y.
The solution may be painful for some who like the builds they have the way they are... but I think if we are all honest with ourselves its clear what needs to happen... we have to pull out that naughty N word Nerf....
Glad to see we're finally back to just calling it a nerf again.
You know in most MMOs you can't do any "runs" with out a proper team makeup... Pugging runs in most MMOs also ends up being not so bad. Mostly players adjust and learn from failure. Lock people in a room, throw away the key, and maybe they'll start to cooperate and learn. In the PUG people won't, though: they'll just die, become highly frustrated, and leave the match (or worse, the game). In the end you'll have your glorious PvP matches, but *everyone* had to be crippled to get you there.
And STO is basically just a MMO in name only. Not to start a whole new topic, but it's the P2W model that intrinsically makes the game gravitate towards individualism: people just want to plunk down money to, erm, win (read 'win' here as: being able to do their PvE thingy comfortably, and not die every time, just so husanakx can have his cool PvP fights). As a result, there's simply too little true role-diversity in this game: every ship can tank, and every ship can fit every weapon.
So maybe this whole idea to transform STO into a true MMO really *is* a pipe dream you need to wake up from.
Tactical Team, Torpedo Overload, Torpedo Spread, Beam Overload, Beam Fire at will
Yeah.... looks like a variety of options to me.....
I hope you were being sarcastic. BFAW1 is so weak, dmg per beam is even weaker than what you normally fire (be it at an increased rate, of course). All Beam Target X ensign skills are pretty much useless, because of being on shared cooldown with things like BO. THY1 is what I usually fit when there's no other option (like on fleet defiant, with 'useless' third tact ensign station).
Some people just wanna run cannons... as much as I find that a bad idea. In pve you'd want 3 cannons and a torp, in pvp thats 2 cannons, a dbb and a torp for the alpha strike.
"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.
Glad to see we're finally back to just calling it a nerf again.
Its not a swear word... A bunch of stuff in this game needs to be NERFED... thats right I have no issues saying it.
A bunch of stuff I like to use needs to be NERFED.
Again simply saying thats a NERF... doesn't make something wrong.
Using the word NERF doesn't auto win you an argument. If something needs to have its effective values reduced cause frankly boosting EVERY thing in the game to its level would be stupid yes thats what you do. I don't think there are many players that don't accept that.
Yes the borg set is getting nerfed.
Yes tac team will be getting nerfed.
Yes BFI doffs will be getting nerfed.
If something needs to have its effective values reduced cause frankly boosting EVERY thing in the game to its level would be stupid yes thats what you do.
If only I had that kind of power! :P
Also, not entirely following your grammar in the above sentence, but if you meant I would rather boost the lackluster bonusses of some of the other sets a bit, yes, I would.
And even Borticus was quick to disavow any certainty regarding the fate of Tactial Team (although, truth be told, I think we both kinda know he was merely doing a meaningless pro forma diplomatic dance there). So you'll probably get your TT nerf.
Wrong, escorts are so tanky that cruisers don't need to protect them in 99% of all cases. Which leads the cruisers to not learning how to since there is no need for them to.
And scorts had to learn ways to be Tanky that cryptic didn't consider because cruisers never learned their role. I only used the 2 piece. Bfi doffs and flow caps skill were always the problem, not the Borg shield regen. Cryptic missed the mark again but I am not surprised.

No I was not saying other things should be boosted.
Honestly every other set in the game is fine pretty much exactly as they are.
There is only one set that is out to lunch... the borg retro... and it is getting a small change we'll see if thats all it needed.
No it makes no sense at all imo to change 20 sets upward... instead of one downward.
I think we all can admit every other set is pretty much equal... there is only one set that is not equal. No making 10+ changes to balance a set that can be balanced with ONE change seems like a real waste of time.
Yes tac team needs a nerf so your right we will see it cause ... frankly the current Cryptic devs are far less stupid the previous ones.
There is only one set that is out to lunch... the borg retro... and it is getting a small change we'll see if thats all it needed.
And you and Borticus will continue to watch set-usage like a hawk, and not rest until every set is about equal, right?
And the sad part is: you probably think your talk about 'equality' makes you very reasonable. You're not. Without there being a clear 'best' in the game, there's no longer any good reason to strive for anything else beyond what sets you already have; no need to pug thru hours of Elite STFs, cuz, courtesy of husanakx, why get just another set that's, meh, just about equal to the one you already have? Way to kill the game!
And scorts had to learn ways to be Tanky that cryptic didn't consider because cruisers never learned their role.
^^ This.
Personally, I *love* it when people find often very creative ways to tank. Some of these methods have become common practice now, so it's easy to forget what ingenuity fueled the original setups.
And it's really sad some devs watch what people come up with, only so they can nerf it (and no, I'm not even talking about the Borg set). And for me, that's a sure game-killer. It's like some dev looking over your shoulder, saying: "I love it how you all get creative and find ways to tank we never even anticipated! But should your setup ever get successful, we will nerf you!" Because then I'm like: Why even bother?
N.B. Out of curiosity, what's the alleged issue with flow capacitors? I have 9 points in them. And other than siphon energy working better, and my Assimilated Tractor Beam draining a bit more, this is the first time I've heard someone refer to flow capacitors being some sort of problem.

So instead of them fixing the defects first to see how the survivability affects escorts, they further nerf a working set that has already been nerfed instead of waiting to see how it performs after the bfi doff nerf. Again, cryptic missing the mark and why I am not surprised.

Hours of STFS?
The borg retro is achievable via 1.5 round of STFs... assuming you don't get a few lucky chip roles. lol I don't know about you but I have put a retro borg set on my newly leveled toons in a total of about 40 min of play time.
Yes though your right... the borg set nerfing will KILL the game... lol Cause it didn't exist for 2 years prior to the borg sets release. lmao

Problem, of course, is: 99% of this game's population isn't in your PvP matches. With invisi-torps, and there already being signs of NPCs doing more damage now, people will need ere more tank than less.
Funny you're making one of my earlier cases here: even just *talking* about nerfing X already has you set your eyes on the next best thing in line, Y.
Glad to see we're finally back to just calling it a nerf again.

No, the pont xantris made, is that he was looking for "viable tac skills at the ensign level;" not just the mere existence of options.
Anyway, we're getting side-tracked here.

Thanks for Harajuku. Now let's get a real "Magical Girl" costume!
Live with it... adjust or move on.

Yes though your right... the borg set nerfing will KILL the game... lol Cause it didn't exist for 2 years prior to the borg sets release. lmao
