This entire conflict feels like theatrics. Jorat wanted to make a point to the galaxy that the Romulans were a force to be reckoned with. Now that point is made, has anyone noticed how his forces have halted their advance?
The whole point of this was to scare the entire Galaxy onto their arses - to show that Romulus was not a Federation puppet or a minor power - to show that they were not a broken race.
Now they've done that, they'll pull back - build up their forces for an inevitable conflict with the Federation.
Did you notice that? His speech referred to the Battle of Charon, one of the United Earth Starfleet's defining battles - the decisive battle of the Earth-Romulan Wars from which it would take the Romulans over a century to recover.
They are looking to make Romulus strong again and to retake what they once held. We have nothing they once held, so they'll leave us alone while they prepare to engage the Federation.
If we're looking to defend ourselves... the Republic has sent a draft of a Military Alliance to us. The Republic is the one Galactic Power the Romulans have never dared to cross.
Besides, the way the Galaxy's shaping up, it will be divided between the Federation and the Republic. Sooner or later, we'll need to pick sides. Better the side who won't dictate policy to us like their way is the unquestionable right.
