Ah, the Jupiter... Long has she been a pearl to my eyes, from sheer size alone even
Regarding the ship characteristics, however.
Take a good look at the thing, its got this massive underbelly. What's it for? Its got an offensive classification that doesn't imply its a carrier, its some kind of heavy battleship. It doesn't have Cannon mounts... So must use beams. Its bulk suggests it won't turn very well...
The big underbelly could contain all sorts of neat things.. A huge Gatling torpedo launcher, escorts, massive numbers of boarding parties (troop transportation?), could be anything.
The ship is fairly mysterious really. Its only in sto so we can assume its a new design...
I just know its big and I want one. I like the ideas I've read here anyway
Awesome-looking ship but I cannot see this being much fun to fly. Ship interiors and space flight through the bridge would have to be considerably developed for the true scale of this vessel to be appreciated. If STO had a universe as big as say, EVE, then this would fit in perfectly.
For me to fly this I would have to have some superior functionality to keep me invested. I currently fly a starcruiser with the Nomad saucer and nacelles, and that is HUGE for starters - I just wish I could walk around it and interact with things and people on board. Currently I can only walk around it and do not a lot...
From a Starfleet perspective, this ship would be used to stage massive battles or planetary evacuations. It would have refugee centres, massive control rooms and sickbays, shuttlebays with deployable fighters, and no less than a Fleet Admiral in the captain's chair. It's weapons would have to be powerful and numerous and it's hull strength superior. Any filthy Klingon squadron would have to muster some serious firepower to even consider taking it on.
Also, the shape of this ship is all wrong. My starcruiser is as flat as a pancake when viewed head-on - there is not much opportunity for hull hits where the enemy is concerned. The Jupiter-Class has too much visible surface area!
This class of vessel should be only seen few and far between, and introducing it for player use would really ruin the spectacle I think, and I would hate to see these flying everywhere around the galaxy. Introduce it as a Tier 6 with a requirement for Fleet Admiral rank only Cryptic, please.
I tried hard to find a way to move the old thread here, but apparently there is nothing I can to to get the old info back (which sucks). So I'm starting the thread again, and hopefully it'll spark new discussion.
For those of you who don't know the Jupiter Class Dreadnought is a ship that is currently unplayable. It is one of the Federations Dreadnoughts and was actually in the game far before the Galaxy X Dreadnought.
Here are some images if you are not familiar with the ship:
After a LONG and arduous road; and the combined work of myself and a few other dedicated Jupiter fans, we were able to gain a response in Junes "Ask Cryptic" saying that the Jupiter and the Typhoon (another ship) were possibly going to be made playable around season 5.
Also during our time in limbo (when we knew not whether we would ever be able to play it) myself and a plethora of others came up with a possible ship build. This is the most popular one and by no means is representative of ALL the participants, nor is it my sole work; a group of us came up with it after much debating.
JUPITER CLASS DREADNOUGHT:
Tier 5 Cruiser (Rear Admiral Lower Half and up)
Jupiter Class Dreadnought:
The Jupiter Class Dreadnought is one of the largest ships from Federation design. It doesn't utilize the standard saucer sectionmain hull design that is common among Federation vessels and instead has a main hull with dual connecting pylons at the aft section on the top and bottom of the ship, which lead to the nacelles. The Jupiter is meant primarily for combat missions where brute force is needed but enough ships cannot be mustered to tend to the issue. The Jupiter Class Dreadnought has two small hanger bays to house support vessels to aid it in combat, because of this the Jupiter can launch small Peregrine fighters, as well as small shuttles to fix up damage that it may sustain or its allies. It has tremendous hull strength and crew compliment and if necessary can be self sufficient for extended periods of time. Unfortunately due to its size the Jupiter has a very poor turning rate and is typically slower than other vessels. To make up for the lack of maneuverability, the Jupiter has an automated point defense system of turrets on it's port and starboard sides. Those along with it's normal weapons truly allow the Jupiter to live up to it's title as "Dreadnought".
WEAPONRY:
Fore Weapon Slots: 3
Aft Weapon Slots: 3
Point Defense Turret (port): 2
Point Defense Turret (starboard): 2
May not equip cannons
ABILITIES;
Launch Support Wing:
-Summons a wing of 6 leveled Peregrine fighters to aid the Jupiter in combat.
OR
-Summons a wing of 3 leveled Repair shuttles to fix the Jupiter or its allies
This ability is usable once every 2 minutes and you may only have one wing launched at a time.
+5 Power to all Subsystems
+30% Hull Strength
Point Defense System:
The Jupiter Class Dreadnought, (in order to make up for its lack of mobility) has four automated turrets mounted on its sides (two on each). These turrets fire independently from the main weapon system and do not need to be controlled by the ships crew. The turrets are used mainly as a defensive measure and do not inflict serious harm to larger vessels, they do however protect the Jupiter from large torpedoes and smaller more agile craft.
Emergency Maneuvering Thrusters:
The Jupiter, (when necessary) can allocate power to their emergency maneuvering thrusters in order to come about more quickly. This power may be used once every 2 minutes and it increases the Jupiters turn rate by 3 to a total of 6 for 20 seconds. This ability puts a large drain on the auxiliary power levels and it takes some time for the power to be restored. NOTE: This power does not increase the Jupiters speed, just the turning rate.

the DEVS have stated REPETEDLY that there will be NO fed carrier, this is a fed carrier, only the kdf has carriers, we need a platform to neutrillize carriers, that would be a true battleship, no fighters, no defence turrets, CANNONS ! in place of your defence batteries, i propose the perminate mounting of 8 dual heavy cannon to BOTH port and starboard sides, w/ an LTcmdr tac station, now please think before you start flaming, w/ the 6 wpn slots the OP has intialy proposed in addtion to this, when you fire a broadside weapon pwr is going to drop like a free falling brick. this ship should also be restricked to tier 6. the dmg from a broadside from a ship of this type should also match that of the lance strike of the Gal-X, just not delivered all at once. with a broadside that can be buffed w/ SCTV or CN;RPDFR it would match more closely with these other ship types, the Gal-X and the Vo'Qov
The Jupiter would only be good as a playable floating wreck.
It has absolutely nothing going for it, other than it looks diferent from the design philosophy of all the other fed ships, and people perhaps like it for that.
They could perhaps use it as a template for an Andorian battleship or something but its pretty clear that as Federation ship the design is utterly fail and all those who support it should be summarily airlocked.
The Typhoon on the other hand is great and apart from minor texture tweaks its a good choice for a battleship.
Awesome-looking ship but I cannot see this being much fun to fly. Ship interiors and space flight through the bridge would have to be considerably developed for the true scale of this vessel to be appreciated. If STO had a universe as big as say, EVE, then this would fit in perfectly.
I have to agree with you that some changes and new bridges need to be made in order to allow for a full appreciation to the size of the ship.
Also, the shape of this ship is all wrong. My starcruiser is as flat as a pancake when viewed head-on - there is not much opportunity for hull hits where the enemy is concerned. The Jupiter-Class has too much visible surface area!
I have to disagree with you on this one, the Jupiter does not need to be sleek and hard to hit because of it's impressive warp core and hull. Weapon hits bounce off of it's shields and any damage done to the hull would be repaired quickly due to the large crew compliment.
This class of vessel should be only seen few and far between, and introducing it for player use would really ruin the spectacle I think, and I would hate to see these flying everywhere around the galaxy. Introduce it as a Tier 6 with a requirement for Fleet Admiral rank only Cryptic, please.

Agreed.

Overall I imagine the ship to be a tank, have tons of hp and impressive power to allot to various systems. The abilities that I described were not meant to be super weapons or larger fire power than normal, but rather abilities that help make up for the downfalls of the ship. The PDT (point defense turrets) are to shoot (independently) at small fast moving objects (ships, targetable torpedoes) that the Jupiter would not be able to outmaneuver. The PDT have a firing arc of 180* on the port and starboard sides and have the fire power of normal turrets (I was thinking half range though).
The ability to launch a wing of Peregrine fighters is also along the same lines, it is not meant to be a carrier and the wing would consist of only 5 or 6 fighters. They are also meant to give the Jupiter support against the more agile foes.
What about instead of giving it a set Commander station and making it a Universal. A ship this size is going to have to be adaptable to the situation and attractive to all play styles. Would be nice to be able to switch out that commander spot with a science or Tactical also. It would fit what I have read about the ship itself. A large ship doesnt necessarily have to be an engineering ship.
With your proposed support craft it would be nice to give it the ability to be a true support/healing ship along with the ability to dish out damage if needed.
I know people will be upset over this. Im just looking for a fun factor with yet another cookie cutter design when all ships should have the ability to have whatever layout they want when it comes to Bridge Crew.
Spock was a science first officer on a cruiser. And if anything the Federation didnt stick to a certain pattern in abilities, etc. You had captains with different background captaining different ships and different crew, everything was based off of ability not necessity to have an X amount of Engineers on board and X amount of Science.
I am inclined to agree with you on the universal BO layout. Ships can be better at one specialization than another, but that should not dictate who flies them. However, because there have only been examples of single position universal BOs and not across platform universals, it may be difficult to push for.
Perhaps if the two highest ranking BO positions were universal? It would allow for that "cookie cutter" design you spoke of, and it would not be as difficult to sell to the player populace as an across the board universal bridge officer layout.
Good work, OP. Lots of time went into your post. And it was very informative. I'll get it however it comes out.
Thanks, I've been working really hard for quite some time to get this ship in the spotlight, and even harder to get the Devs to admit it exists. Thank you.
I say no to the side cannon ports, as their's already a tac console for this. "automated defense battery".
Bump this up to 4 wep front and aft. Put 2 360 turrets one on front, one in rear. Your problem with small craft is over. If they would allow more than one "automated defense battery" Then bump the tac consoles to 4 and put 2 "ADB" their.
I would be ok with a special power, like fire at will, but just for certain weapons (in this case), but auto fire takes care of this as well.
I never understood people's idea of a war machine. Every idea of a war machine I've seen is seriously under powered in one way or another. This is for a game right? apposed to keep things fair? We wouldn't want a end game component. I'm sorry but that's what your suggesting with this.
I could hardly imagine these being Tier 5 ships. TBH, the Typhoon will likely be equivalent to Odyssey, sounds like they may end up Tier 6 or 5.5 at least. Just hope the Escort captains get something soon, that roster of ships is weak by comparison.
I do not have problems with a ship like this being in. Someone will fly it.
I think the fact that this thread has been active really since the beginning of STO, has never fallen below the first page, and as not only survived but thrived after a forum switch should be enough to convince cryptic that the Jupiter should be put in game.

Thank you, while I cannot take the credit for all of the work, the roads been a long one. Finnally it seems to be paying off. The devs have now admitted to a possible date for the implementation of the Jupiter and that's a start. However with the recent changes to Cryptic, the dates may be bumped back.

Going back to the purely aesthetic problems with the Jupiter, what do people think needs to be changed on the Jupiter to make it look better? (Personally I'll take it as is, but things could be changed to make it look even better)
My suggestions:
-Nacelles need to be beefier
-Pylons need to be further apart and possibly closer to the body of the ship.
-"Under-belly" of the ship needs to be wider.
Take a look at this photo for an idea of what I'm talking about: PHOTO
Now with the announcement of STO going F2P, I have even higher hopes that we will be seeing the Jupiter in the nearish future.

I say use it to put something new in the game. Make it a multiplayer vessel, with its strength scaling according to the number of players on board so that it's equivalent to the same number of Tier 5s.
Leave the details like how players dock and control the ship to Cryptic. Making it work is their job.
Just as long as they don't bring out an even bigger ship that makes the previous tier redundant, yeah? I don't want to be forced out of yet another tier of ships to stay effective. Maybe even let certain lower tier ships dock with it, so that they can have a use again as a strategic option for Jupiter teams.
If just we get MOAR weapon slots and boff slots and bigger numbers, I'll be counting the days 'til the other Star xxxx game.

Interesting idea, but I don't see how it could be done. Which player would pilot it? What would the others do? It may be simpler to allow it as a single player ship.
Now just slap a Carnival Cruise Lines logo on the side, and you got yourself a winner.
This, exactly.
The Jupiter looks nothing like a traditional Federation ship.
I realize we've got some non-traditional designs out there... but even the Star Cruisers fit the mold of identifiable saucer, secondary hull and pair of nacelles.
The Jupiter reminds me of some cross between the Planet Express Ship and a Star Destroyer.
I'm really not liking the idea of fleet command "superships" at all. There's absolutely no canonical support for it and if that's the road STO goes down we might as well be playing in that other popular sci-fi universe where a battle is a couple of massive mile-long ships parked and throwing fighters at eachother.

You don't have to see how it could be done. Cryptic can do more than just make more ships with slightly different stats. If the players let them get away with another Tier or another Tier.5, then that's what the players deserve and I doubt I'll continue being one.
They have people who are paid to innovate and enhance the software. Make them work.

I understand everything that you've said, and I'm not sure I would want a new tier, it would certainly make a lot of players mad. However, what I said was I didn't understand your idea of multiplayer ships. I couldn't even begin to fathom how to make one without fundamentally changing the mechanics of the game.

Well,
I would agree about the turning rate, but other then that, sounds like an interesting ship. With that BO layout, it would be impossible to kill, at least one on one. With that Lt. Cmd. Sci slot, you could use HE 3, ST 3, or TSS 3. I would be interested in flying it.

Well, I am not sure. It would be similar to the Star Cruiser because with the right setup, you can't kill it one on one. Except I think you could tank with this even more. Although the turning rate would be even worse then the Star Cruiser. I would agree with an earlier post, and maybe doing 3 engineering, 3 tactical, and 3 science console slots would be good. I don't like having just 2 tactical because then you won't do enough DPS to even dent their shields.
Since it only has 6 weapon slots, instead of 8, and the automated defense turrets don't do any real damage, you aren't going to be putting out much DPS. Instead, you will be able to tank like crazy, and keep others alive. I would increase the turning rate on it. Make it the same as the big Klingon Carrier. Other than that, is sounds like a fine ship. Like I said, you won't be able to kill anything, but nothing will be able to kill you either. You will just be a huge healer. Even more than the Star Cruiser possibly.
I also like the idea of having it as the Fed's carrier ( ) seeing as only the Klingons have carriers, AND they're getting a new flagship.
Want this ship to be equally tactical as much as engineering, and have the Typhoon as the main engineering one.
Also would there be an option on ship interior to be Small, Medium, Large, or for this ship; MASSIVE

I agree, as do a large amount of people who see it in-game as well.

They could create a secondary skin for the Galaxy X that would be the Jupiter.
And they could add a skin for the Assault Cruiser that would be the Typhoon.
Then later they could offer up "refits".
good enough for me.
That's not what Trek space combat is.

What would you suggest to make it more balanced?
-Quiiliitiila
Tactical : 1x Lieutenant, 1x Lieutenant Commander
Engineering: 1x Ensign, 1x Lieutenant, 1x Commander
Science: 1x Ensign, 1x Lieutenant
I also like the idea of having it as the Fed's carrier ( ) seeing as only the Klingons have carriers, AND they're getting a new flagship.
Want this ship to be equally tactical as much as engineering, and have the Typhoon as the main engineering one.
Also would there be an option on ship interior to be Small, Medium, Large, or for this ship; MASSIVE
