This game is rated T, so, those kids shouldn't be playing it. Also, they are required to get written permission from their parents first anyway because there are laws against collecting personally identifiable information on anyone 13 and under.

From the ESRB's site:

"TEEN
Content is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. May contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent use of strong language."

About CO:

"Other:
Includes online features that may expose players to unrated user-generated content"

"Players can customize their female characters with provocative attire/accessories (e.g., garter belts, bikinis, and thigh-high stockings) or outfits that barely cover the breasts."

There is no excuse for being offended by a name like Major Cleavage because anyone playing the game can easily look up ratings information and see what they can expect.

His name is within the game rating. Other people with similar or the same name have not been told to change their name even after being reported, suggesting an unequal application of the company rules. If you remove everything that offended someone, no one would ever be able to make any kind of media of any type because there is always going to be someone who is offended.

This isn't a freedom of speech issue this is an issue of unwarranted moderation according to the games own ToS, kids under 12 technically aren't allowed to play this game, and nobody is sexually harassing anyone.

FYI - My geologist friends exact reply when ask if Major Spathic was funny was...
It's funnier than "igneous hematite."
Which was an off-handed reference used only once by Doctor Who when Tom Baker played the role. He then told us "there is no such thing." Being good friends we use an IH reference any chance we can and now in the age of internet and e-mails he gets links every other year or so when any sciencey article uses the phrase - igneous hematite. Like this one.

That last line will cause him consternation. Not unlike an English teacher when confronted with a 10 Items or Less sign.

1st of all, everyone loves cleavage. Especially the 13yr olds playing the game, they're not dumb. They know what's up (pardon the pun).

2ndly, I agree with majority of ppl. Name should be allowed. PWE is simply trying to get a fix for their power high. Again.

Nor should it surprise anyone that PWE run games have the classic issue of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing, let alone what that half of the brain is thinking.

The fact is CO is not an adults game, the only 18+ MMO I can actually think of that isnt just a sex game is Age of Conan, which once long ago was full of potential to be more then a bad WoW clone, had maybe every mature minded gamer gone for it who knows. So while this may be a case of long delayed generic, and may not be the only one out there, the only real issue that matters is if even ONE other player online saw that character, and found it offensive, by the rules, such a name is genericable. An offensive name is simply put intolerable as it may drive off even one potential customer. Reasonable adults should be able to accept their pun was a step to far and move on, not come QQ on the forums like a butt hurt child telling all the kids how dad spanking him is child abuse.

It was a silly arse name OP, let go and move on. Community grow the frell up, and being able to make a big breasted babe is not the same as calling her boobs macgee.

This isn't a children's game, at least not intentionally, except people like you are what's making it seem like it is with this whole "I'm not mature enough to not giggle at 'naughty' words which are actually innocent" mentality.

You mentioned before, your character who was once called the Drapist was renamed as a result of someone not understanding your concept was literally about drapes, draping over people, and yet here you are.. championing the side of immaturity, stupidity and ignorance.

I just can't believe how you give in so easily to this absurd notion that we must avoid using ANY word that contains another word in itself or another meaning all because "kiddies might see it!" Heck.. if all it takes is for a word to have such a thing,, you better not ever go see a therapist.

The game isn't meant for anyone under the age of 13, and no I don't want to hear about how easy it is for any kid below that age line to play the game. That's due to lack of parent supervision and not any of a player's or the game's fault if a kid gets exposed to sexual themes in the game.

Oh yes, it's perfectly alright to make a highly-seuxalized female character with huge bon bons but noooooooooooo let's not make any textual reference to that even when the visual one is okay!

Double standards for the win.

It's not a children's game as already explained, and this is a case of a female character consensually giving herself a name that references having a large pair. If that's the case then she shouldn't be offended when someone walks up to her and praises her in such a manner.

Also, in-game scenario != real life scenario.

What is it with the people in this thread that are all "Oh, a GM commanded it, so you should duck your head and walk away and hide! Obey the rules, even if you feel an arbitrary mistake was made!"?

The "rule" is a highly variable judgement call. There's nothing wrong with appealing to a higher authority.

EDIT: And just for the record, I haven't seen the OP "QQ"ing at all. He seems much more confused about it, to me.

As an X-GM from "Another MMO" I have to say I agree with this completely. I've had to enforce the rules before and some people haven't always agreed with them...so they reported me to my dark overlords who reviewed all the logs(yeah, we actually kept those) and I never actually got in trouble but the point here is that we should have that right and exercise it whenever we, personally, feel the need arises.

A competent GM should welcome challenges and criticism because they have faith in the actions they have taken under the rules they enforce. This does not, however, mean we're 100% correct all the time and anyone can learn something new at any time. In this case I feel the action taken is incorrect and I would be a liar if I said this was the 1st time I've heard of incorrect actions being taken by Cryptic/PWE. At the end of the day GMs are human just like the players and in such can make mistakes.

The actual problem that's been mentioned in the past is that with the mostly anonymous GM/CS System in CO(Penndragon tends to sign tickets and I've seen Navi's signature on some) it is entirely possible, and has been documented/mentioned in the past, for the person whose judgement you are questioning to be the very person who replies to your appeal. It is for this reason that I suggest, should you choose to appeal an action like this, that if you either do not get a satisfactory reply or you get some kind of "canned reply" that you immediately reply to the ticket with the phrase, "I am requesting that this issue be escalated to the next tier of Customer Service." Alternatively you could put in an appeal ticket and then send TT a forum message with the ticket number and politely ask him to look into the matter. In my personal experiences TT is quite friendly and usually willing to help(although sometimes, rightfully so, he cannot discuss all of the details of something with you).

Ok, that's what I've got here. Guess you could say I had to rack my mind for this one

Indeed, that takes up like most of the bottom of the box of Champions Online its pretty hard to miss. Even the "newer" boxes that have smaller warnings state TEEN ,12 or depending on the country the box is from 16+.

Champions online is not a child friendly game, it handles some pretty dark subjects. The destruction of Detroit, The Apocalypse and crazy stuff like DEMON POSSESSION!...anyone that thinks CO is a childs game is utterly delusional.

That action in itself is also on topic. It shows what one person finds an interesting topic another would find offensive .

For the OP to have his or her name changed because one player moaned is beyond a joke, but I reckon in my personal opinion no player complained. It was changed for reasons that have nothing to do with the TOS of this game.
In my opinion the OP's name should be restored and an apology made to the OP on the forums.

This is nothing but bad PR and new players hearing of such double-standards and such actions will most likely stay clear of this game.

Not good for business.

My last thoughts on this subject are this.

Put aside the fact that this thread has over 3000 views and over 100 replies, most of which thought the name change was well over Hey Listen's remit. We are as a whole are a rather tolerant bunch that cracks down on sexists, racists and bigots when they dare show their face here. Its fair to say if we don't find something offensive its not offensive .

Because to be honest we are a bunch of lefty tree hugging hippies that takes offense to almost anything.

Major Cleavage was not offensive and was a toon that was about well before Hey Listen! was.

No, I'm atheist, but even if Demgoddess was as well, it wouldn't matter because atheism only requires the disbelief of God, not demons. There are several atheists I've known in my lifetime that actually practice magic, so not all atheists are scientifically minded. And even if they were, it would be difficult to deny the existence of demons in the Champions universe when any practitioner of the magical arts can call one out of their home plane.

Well, if A. Clarke is correct - Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic .

Maybe it just looked like magic.

I really don't need to meet them to know that they don't practice "magic", lol. They just delude themselves that they do.

This is my last word on the topic, I'm not gonna argue about something so ridiculous AND ridiculously off-topic, that's your forte.

Knock yerself out mate.
