  • Lightmaps are pre-calculated textures/decals, nothing more. Most of the rendering and game engines I have ever worked on allow designers to set receive and cast shadow flags on individual objects. Details that are static and not being acted upon by dynamic lighting in a dynamic way (eg. moving light sources in the…
  • It is static, that's kind of the point here. I don't recall ever seeing the exchange consoles and walls get up and walk around.
  • Are you honestly saying that of two visibly static shadows that look identical, you'd prefer the one that uses more system resources just because you know it's being calculated in real time?
  • The two aren't mutually exclusive and have been used together frequently. Killing performance by making every light and shadow dynamic is just lazy design.
  • It seems silly for static objects to have dynamic shadows. Those should be baked-in lightmaps.
  • Radiosity makes a huge difference in that shot. Very nice.
  • If your CPU supports VT-d and you have two graphics cards installed (one dedicated to the guest, one to the host), you can run Windows through a VM at nearly native speed. With VirtualBox seamless mode or VMware unity mode you can even have the Windows taskbar integrated directly into the host OS and run Windows binaries…
  • Heh, I thought the same thing. It looks heavily inspired by the Centurion from Privateer.
  • I haven't seen all of the before and after images, but the latest "after" image has a colour problem. The original had a sort of cold, whitish, bluish look to it which seems a more accurate (though not completely) colour temperature for the area being shown. The after has a warm, golden glow, as if the starbase were on the…
  • Antitrust (Microsoft) and Rootkit (Sony)
  • There are also Holtzman engines from the Dune novels that allow Spacing Guild heighliners or No-ships to fold space to any point in the universe instantly. They do require Guild Navigators or Ixian navigational computers to work successfully though. My favourites are probably the hyperdrive and portal spawner from Star…
  • It's a problem that has been around for some time. In fact, I think it's gotten worse recently. I had gotten into the habit of automatically clicking tray items a couple of times before, but now it seems that doesn't work half of the time and I have to repeatedly click four or five times on things until I can visually see…
  • It would be nice if ship gear that emits sound had a "Disable audio" option in the same way that gear which changes appearance has "Disable visuals". That run-down, badly looped refrigerator noise that the Breen and the Sol Defense engines make can get old.
  • I can confirm as the same thing happened to me the first time through. When the cutscene kicks in, I would hear the warnings, ie. "hull at 75%", "hull at 50%", "hull at 25%" until my ship exploded. It was clear that my ship was being picked apart by the enemy ships and did not explode due to the time portal (scratch the…
  • Unless I have something else to do that requires the resources being used or I have to go somewhere and need my computer. Continuing to run and initiating large downloads when told to quit is not appropriate behaviour for any software.
  • The game should really prompt before it starts patching upon exit. When I exit a program I expect it to stop running.
  • And here I was thinking OP was referencing something far more risque, akin to the third place submission in the Bioshock Cover Art Contest. Warning: If you are easily offended, you may not want to look too deeply into the origins of said submission.
  • Yeah, I have to agree. For a text heavy game like STO I don't think it makes much sense to use an HMD, unless you want to strain your eyes. Even for FPS games where it adds to immersion, the state of "VR" at this time doesn't feel like much more than a novelty. Just like the previous push for VR and all of the HMDs that…
  • Have you tried using Vireio Perception? I've not tried it with STO or Oculus Rift, but I've gotten it to work with some other games and my Cardboard setup.
  • Very nice and good choice of tunes.
  • This is what I do. If someone is really abusive, they get added to my ignore list. Some people have really twisted priorities and/or entitlement issues (see first world problems) and treat the game as if it were a life or death matter. It's best to play the way that is most fun for you and disregard anyone who tries to…
  • I seem to recall a similar problem and solution with the version of PhysX used in Mirror's Edge. I haven't experienced this issue with STO, but you could create a batch file that deletes those files from the STO directory (which should make the game automatically use the ones installed by the Nvidia driver) or copies over…
  • Another one I noticed is that the fleet bank log now shows withdrawals as deposits.
  • I experienced the same thing. I wasn't sure if we were doing something wrong, but we must have destroyed a couple hundred ships before I gave up and warped out.
  • It sounds like you only use your computer for entertainment and consumption. I use my computers for work, meaning I am privy to sensitive information. A backdoor that I welcome into my systems can not only expose data that could be used against the companies I do business with, but could also land me in legal hot water due…

  • I don't think I could say a thing that better demonstrates your ignorance than this right here.

  • I run a custom AOSP-based ROM on my smartphone, without gapps. I would also like to point out that "Google does it too" isn't a legitimate defence. If I were to use Windows 10, I would not have a choice as to whether or not Microsoft obtains data from my PCs, since not everything can be disabled (device data, telemetry and…

  • Wow, that is good news, I'll have to give it a go. Thanks for the heads-up.
  • I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro and within twenty minutes had started the rollback to Windows 8.1 Pro. There are just too many privacy issues and lack of user control to sit well with me. Windows 10 isn't so much an OS update as it is a marketing platform, which is why it is the first Microsoft operating system that is being…

  • You know what you know and if you won't read, that's all you'll know. Just don't be surprised if your poor security practices come back to bite you.
