~Using Wine emulator on Mac to run STO?

I've been a PC guy all my life but thinking about getting a Mac. But certainly don't want to give up STO to do it. Last time I checked they still don't support a Mac client. So I hear about the Wine emulator for Mac to run PC apps, will this work for STO? Anybody tried this? Does it work/look/feel the same?

Thank you

Hey there I can’t give you advice on that one as I don’t use it myself.

Still I also play STO from a mac, the second mac actually. What I did was simply install boot camp windows on them and launch STO from there.

I never had any kinds of problems with it.

I have played STO on a MAC since before the Mac client was even a twinkle in Cryptic's eye (and now killed).
It works fine. I run it on an iMac and on a MacBookPro. There used to be many helpful threads on how to do so.
There are quite a few different ways to do it. PM if you would like some help.

I started with this thread: http://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/1082923/unofficial-mac-version-new-thread/p1
be sure to run all the updates on the wineskin wrapper if you start with this thread's version.

There are a few other ways to do so and here are the links I keep handy:

    The software I use: http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php
I would start with this version if I were starting from scratch again, but over the years I've updated my wrapper to this as updates became available.

    Others:

    http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/
    https://www.winehq.org/

Of course Bootcamp if you like that or Parallels.

Has anyone had any luck playing on linux Mint or Ubuntu via an Oracle VirtualBox?

I don't use Mac or Linux, but good luck getting the game to run on them. I hope it works out for you.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.

Using wine-staging 1.9.11 on Linux here. Works right out of the box.

    It does work.
Using WINE on Macs works fine, I've done so for YEARS.
Apparently trekpuppy is using WINE on Linux to play STO, congrats.

I'm a Mac user, and I now Boot Camp to run STO.

Many others use Wine or PlayOnMac... it all depends on what you're willing to put up with, and what your machine can do.

I wasn't meaning to sound negative or to imply I didn't think it would work. Apologies if that's what it sounded like. I sometimes pick the wrong way to say things.

I was genuinely trying to be supportive. I know Mac and Linux users have difficulties running some windows-based things. I'm no expert on things computer by a long shot. I go to my son and son in law for that.

If your CPU supports VT-d and you have two graphics cards installed (one dedicated to the guest, one to the host), you can run Windows through a VM at nearly native speed. With VirtualBox seamless mode or VMware unity mode you can even have the Windows taskbar integrated directly into the host OS and run Windows binaries as though they were native.

I'm playing on ubuntu with playonlinux. It's very straightforward to set it up. But as with all emulation you will need a stronger computer than advertised.

I've already dropped all the games that don't have native clients. Except STO. It's a great way to save up on money lol...
