One real simple solution to this problem is to scale down the size of the map, or put up a warning to engage or leave with a time limit of 1 to 2 minutes,( or what ever is justifiable), of inactivity once the battle has started, auto-booting you out. I love using Quantum mines, especially while flying the bigger, slower turn rate vessels. Put that puppy in reverse, n watch the magic. Works superbly with lvl 50 D'deridex.
