If people were even 1/4 as intellegent as they think they are they would never say anything so stupid, as they would know that America or China, or freedom of speech, has nothing to do with anything relating to private property; which these forums are.

No, son. You do not have the unfettered right to free speech in a privately-funded forum, any more than you can walk into someone's house uninvited and start shouting at them in their living room. The staff represents the people who pay the bills, and as such have every right to be as arbitrary and capricious as they like. If we can't live with that, our only recourse is to leave and not come back. I say that as someone who has received some warnings himself. It is what it is. *shrug*

hey I'm a proponent of Free Speech myself; but private boards can do what they like, as long as they follow the 'Terms of Service' they outlined (and which you agreed to when you created an account to access their board.)
I'm definitely not a fan of the impending ARC software; and will just quit playing and remove STO should PWE/Cryptic make it 100% mandatory; BUT there's never a call for foul language, and you should be able to state a grievance without resorting to things that are rude, offensive, etc.
If a poster can't manage to do that, I think it speaks more about them then any actions taken against such a post by PWE/Cryptic.

PWE ARC Drone says: "Your STO forum community as you have known it is ended...Display names are irrelevant...Any further sense of community is irrelevant...Resistance is futile...You will be assimilated..."
It will also contain data mining software and report your habits back to PWE so as they can target you for better advertisements and services "YOU" want according to your habits !
No thanks aint interested, if it is mandatory well I wont be having it !
Amen... I have the NSA for that. I don't need PWE doing it more than they already likely do.
...If you believe everything that corporations say then you have a lot to learn.
Seriously though: I can get some notable lag from time to time and a program running in the background would not help this at all. I have to tip my hat to the folks with bandwidth restrictions as well because that is a big problem and when you want to run things like voice chat programs in the BG + STO then having even more drag on the resources of your machine and your bandwidth is really unwanted.
The spyware aspect is almost never wanted either so that only detracts further from this thing. Also some machines with good security systems may actually block Arc altogether which would mean that either you would have to intentionally weaken security (bad idea) or find a way to make a loophole for Arc (honestly just as bad of an idea).
However... I think everyone can rest assured that PWE is going to show their M.D. in Proctology and shove this into our game rather we like it or not. Furthermore, there is not likely ANYTHING Cryptic can do about it. They may be able to tell PWE that their Player Base does not want it but I suspect the answer, assuming they bother responding, would just be "Too bad!" and with that Cryptic is out of the loop. So grab yourself some KY and assume the position.
Except it is a big issue if you're on a limited data cap because of this:
Uh . . . if you have a limited data cap then 1) Your ISP is like a decade or so behind the times no matter what country you are in and 2)the actual MMO will make whatever a launcher uses for data look like absolutely nothing.
Also, if anyone is worried about more than that running in the background, basic . . . and i mean VERY basic knowledge for beginners on any PC includes how to manage your processes and it takes a few seconds to do so.
However if it bugs you that much then - hey, it's free to play, so log off and enjoy!!! Nothing spent - nothing lost - and there are LOTS of F2P games out there that are just as awesome
Just letting Cryptic know if you force people to uninstall and reinstall to play on arc a cretin percentage of players just wont bother to reinstall. Make an option to update the game so we don't have to uninstall to use arc!

I'm not thrilled to install another piece of bloatware just to play STO... I've already got Steam. I'll install ARC, yes, but the OP brings a valid concern for others who really hate this sort of software, and will just say "no way" to STO.

I won't lose sleep over PWE making an effort to bring all their games under one unified launcher and hopefully opening the door to inter-game socialising, achievements and what not. The sooner the Cryptic launcher is consumed by our PWE overlords the better imo.
There's a huge thread on this already. (Two actually).
Re:Steam, they say it won't change. They also say that they don't know how this will be achieved.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
Arc is PWE's answer to Steam, basically. At the moment it's not much more than a launcher launcher. The plan is that someday it will actually be a unified launcher for all PWE games.
I'm running it now on my new Win 8 laptop and honestly can't say whether it's causing any issues or not. The game itself seems to run fine, and I try not to use the built-in "browser" any more than I can help it.

So you call some people "cretin" but you don't even know what is ARC? Go fetch some information...
About ARC.
As long as is there a CLEAR and TRUE option to stop those "annonimous" information collectors, I'm fine... also... we SHOULD have a way of not using that P2P process that runs behind ARC.
Cryptic/PWE, remember that you're dealing with a player base that have a good portion of people that knows their stuff in IT...

i would prefer a better answer then this being put on my plate, to my way of thinking, i dont use these sorts of launchers, EA has origin, Gearbox has Steam and PWE has ARC and all may help make things easier but they run actively in the background collecting information directly for my computers. now should i have to sacrifice my personal privacy to play this game? or is it not like that? how will the ARC service run in the background? will it be invasive and collect all the information on my computer?
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
I understand the concept behind it. I use it and I have no problems with it on my desktop and laptop. Though if I played more PWE titles, I would like it better because all it is an launcher to bring up the STO launcher. Basically, an unnecessary step.
For all of those individuals who are preaching that this program is the end of STO, please give some examples of this program doing what you claim it does.
I'll see if I can't work around it first. Install ARC. Disable launch on startup. Use ARC to DL and patch the game. Then close it, and just start the gameclient directly via a link on the desktop on all the non-patch days.
If that doesn't work, then yeah...
Season 8, not that great.
I just don't trust/like these people enough to have their TRIBBLE running on my computer 24/7.

"Answer to Steam"? Multiple companies have an Arc-like launcher for all their games. Steam is superior to all of them.
There will be a "backdoor" enabling us to run STO without Steam or Arc or any other such launcher-program. I can run STO now without Steam, in fact. If PWE attempts to lock out that option, it's going to be nasty, because many gamers simply don't want excess stuff (read: unnecessary garbage) on their machines (especially when it comes with some TRIBBLE like Akamai).

Well... hearing that they don't plan to mess with Steam makes me feel a little better. But not knowing how? They'd better figure it out.
Arc is just a fool hearty attempt to get us to play their other games. Which the majority of us won't do, with the exception of the other Cryptic-made games like Champions and Neverwinter. IMHO, PWI would get better chances to get their player base to try out their other games if they had cross-game promotions than forcing it right down our throats with Arc.
But most STO players don't want to get anymore involved with PWI anymore than STO because of their absolute horrid CSR and that their games is nothing but grindfests and not fun at all (which is what STO is now).

Gamers complain a lot. But in the end, they do nothing. Remember steam when it was launched ? It was the first, they asked an online connection to play the solo part of half life 2. They were big brother, and they still are. Inspecting screenshots and saves, checking our gamers habits etc...
Almost everyone complained. They complained again for Diablo 3, and now they complain for arc.
Now, steam is some kind of white knight. They just had to make a lot of games for cheap, and just buy us. They are like some defenders against the evil Uplay, arc and origin. In 10 years, those same evil things will just be another steam, and everyone will love them and complain against somlething else.
Complain all you like, everyone knows ARC will come, and will stay. And we all know the vast majority of players will stay.
I complained about steam. It was useless. In the end, even I have steam on my pc. Cheap games were hard to resist. I still hate them, but they have my money, they doesn't care about my opinion.
Big Brother won. As always. The cretins are not the ones that will not reinstall STO when Arc will come. The cretins are all of us, that complain, and make threats, but never act on them. If we did, we would never had Steam, Origin, Uplay, Diablo 3 or COD:MW2 the way they are.
