My Defiant is named the Serenity, I use the name because of the irony... that ship is less than serene, of course and I like the name personally... suck it hater.
My Odyssey is the flagship of our fleet, so its the Tribbles N Bits.
My bug ship is the Voldemort, since it was so rare and coveted it became the ship that shall not be named, and I thought the name fit.
I tend to name ships based on their role and class, science ships tend to have names from Portal, because if you dont like science than -bleep- you!
I dont do random, I also dont have a creative bone in my body... so I pay homage to the things I like.
Im the type that will usually change my ships name or registry if i see someone else with it, the Defiant is my exception... I even have a plaque my friend made up for me, and yes, the quote on the bottom is from Malcolm Reynolds... just look at my sig.
what I am sick of is the ships named Enterprize and the many variations of it... now thats bad.

It's like..seriously? If you have to butcher a name that bad, it's probably a good idea to use something else.
Ships from wolf 359 are still usable
i thought that like the enterprise they'd make another USS Melbourne, Tolstoy, ect
as such i began calling my primary ship Melbourne at all times, and giving the ancestors M Names, such as Manhattan. As an Homage to voyager and the episode pathfinder and exploration I named my Bellerophon USS Pathfinder.
Shuttles I use A names Acheron and Alpha Flyer(corny I know)
as for Klingon ships i usually make up Klingonese sounding names with know meaning.
I agree with the fact that there are unorigonal ship names. However i think many people just arnt imaginetive enough to bother.
I have 6 toons. Im always being told how good my toon design is. I made a big Santa fed toon using an alien toon of mine. Im always being stopped saying hes the best Santa players have seen. Look out for him hes rustiswordz full of Chrimbo cheer!
Names are the same. I get them from various mainly historical/ legendary locations.
Ie: Mithrandir, Lathspell (alt names for Gandalf) Seppuku (formal Japanese word for ritual suicide) Folkwica (a type of celtic weapon) Bakh Nagh (Hindu word meaning Tiger Claw)
Monkey see, Monkey do. Monkey flings Feathered Monkey poo...
As a self-proclaimed 'canoneer', I always try to do some research when I name my ships. For instance, Danube-class shuttles are named after rivers, Type-8 shuttles named after renowned scientists, Titan-class named after moons in the Sol System, etc.
The most unusual name I have used was for a cruiser, the U.S.S. Cabeza de Vaca. I got a number of questions regarding why I called my ship "head of the cow". Of course, if you are a Texan, then you hopefully paid attention during your Texas history class, and would know the significance of the name. Everybody else should just Google it hehe.
They make a wondrous mess of things. Brave amateurs, they do their part.
My primary Fed character has always flown the USS Trafalgar (I'm something of a student of the Age of Sail). My second character is a Romulan exile, all his ships have been named with Romulan words. Currently he flies the USS Khellian. My third character is a Fed Klingon from the 29th Century, all his ships have been named after actors who have played The Doctor (USS Tennant, USS Pertwee, USS Troughton, shuttlecraft McGann).
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
This character is why I don't play my Romulan any more. Tovan Khev is NOT my BFF! Get him off my bridge!
You of course meant the state of Rhode Island's capitol.
Oh of course, Rhode Island's capitol is right! As a side note I have just finished watching all but one Enterprise... It really wasn't a bad show, in fact it's pretty good. So I have taken to name my NX-Class U.S.S. Porthos... Yes this is a character that could have had his own story arc!
I get it, and I am amused. Most people probably won't get the reference.
I'm one of those who definitely does.

Interesting discussion, as me and my fleetmates have a habit of calling out particularly ridiculous ship names on our private chat when we see them. The most idiotic we've seen recently was the U.S.S. Riker's TRIBBLE.
I tend to go with the classics, typically either from Greek mythology or one taken from the name of a historical Royal Navy frigate (I'm a big fan of the Jack Aubrey books). My heavy escort carrier is the Agamemnon mainly because that was the name of Sheridan's first command in Babylon 5 though.
My main ship (Aventine class) is the USS Danu
My runabout is the USS Weser
My delta flyer is the USS Curie
My Peghqu' is the IKS Kri'stak
Most of my starter ships were named after English and American authors that were discussed at university when I created the character. Even though the first was the USS Tolkien.
FKA K-Tar, grumpy Klingon/El-Aurian hybrid. Now assimilated by PWE.
Sometimes, if you want to bury the hatchet with a Klingon, it has to be in his skull. - Captain K'Tar of the USS Danu about J'mpok.
Well, Prometheus is a Greek myth, while Mjolnir is a Norse God's weapon. The rest of the Advanced Escort classes were also all taken from Greek mythology.
Just sayin', not judgin'.
So he should have named it Zeus's Thunderbolt.
I usually either 1. Hit the random name generator, or 2. come up with something unique. The main ship for my new Char (Named "Obvious) is the "Common Sense"
I think I've posted to a thread like this before.
I live in Hawaii, and have given the ships flown by my primary character Hawaiian names: Liliuokalani, Kahekili, Kamehameha I (my assault cruiser), and my current Oddy, the Fort Elizabeth (the first and only fort raised by Russians in the Hawaiian Islands).
My tac officer named his ships after science fiction authors; I'm particulalry pleased with the Robert L. Forward. Then he got a bug ship, named the Jagermonster.
My sci captain got a Dyson sci cruiser, named the U.S.S Curiosity; she's Caitian, and her tagline is "Anyone who makes any comments about Curiosity and what it did to the cat will find themselves cleaning out the failed bio experiment in Science Lab 3!"
My newest character, a Romulan, has been snitching her names from other science fiction book series; so far she has flown the R.R.W. Wiitikin and the R.R.W. Mecheita. If she acquires the R.R.W. Ilisidi, she will have fully embraced her cunning yet honorable Romulan heritage
"Susse-thrai" had been the name bestowed upon her, half in anger, half in affection, by her old crew on Bloodwing; the keen-nosed, cranky, wily old she-beast, never less dangerous than when you thought her defenseless, and always growing new teeth far back in her throat to replace the old ones broken in biting out the last foe's heart. Romulans: left one homeworld, lost another, third time's the charm?
I've been seeing a lot of USS Serenity or names like Mal Reynolds lately. One even in the same DSE together like they were holding hands or something.
That's something I don't like about some die-hard Trekkies and science fiction fans - they let the TV do the thinking for them. Nary an original thought pops into their heads
I have a Galaxy Retrofit called Vlad the Impaler, a Cell Ship called Legate Damar, my Connie is called Hitman for Hire and I have one of my old leveling ships called Spooky Mulder. Just wanted to share that.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
For me, I'd say it's kind of a grey area between unoriginal and tribute. I can handle "Pegasus", "Yamato" (okay, be honest people... how many of you named your Yamato after the Space Battleship Yamato and not the Galaxy-class ship from TNG?), "Saratoga" (Noticed another SAaB fan in the thread...), etc.
It's when I can't cross a sector without seeing a half-dozen "Enterprize", "Interprise", "Enterprice" and so-forth that I feel a lack of creativity.
"If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it's not for the timid." -- Q, TNG: "Q-Who?"
^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...

I didn't like the idea of naming my ship after Mal Reynold's ship. I did however like the idea of naming my ship after the site of the battle.
I fly the U.S.S. Serenity Valley. Starfleet ships have long followed U.S. Navy tradition in name selection, and the site of a battle was common for U.S. Navy ships.

One of the favorite things in my fleet is to call out unusual or funny ship names in Sector Space.
For the most part I stick to things that actually sound like ship names. For example
USS Lexington
USS Caliburn
USS Avalon
USS Artemis
RRW Farore
RRW Din
RRW Nayru
AKS Sivar
AKS Stormreaver
AKS Zuljin
AKS Doomhammer
IKS Thrak'hath
I admit I do have a few ships with names like Science Cat, Pyro Cat, and Speedy Cat, but those are on my Caitian, and her main ship is the Avalon.
Sometimes I hear some of the more off the wall names and go "Who is naming ships these days?"

Although I reject your premise that I don't have an original thought in my head, I just love the franchise.
