I have to say I am one who does not appreciate the mixing or crossing over of Sci-Fi with the Star Trek Universe, but I did laugh when I saw the "USS Baby Jesus" in sector space.
I have to remember that there is a diverse range of people who play STO, and some are Star Trek purists like myself, and some see Star Trek in the same universe as anything with space content: Dr. Who, Babylon 5, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, Space 1999, etc.
I can understand a historical or non-fictitious figure such as Abraham Lincoln or Carl Sagan as a ship name since the premise of Star Trek was designed to be the future of our Earth. After all, our US Navy has many ship names after Presidents (USS George Washington), admirals (USS Hyman G. Rickover), locations of battles (USS Iwo Jima), etc.
One very good point brought up earlier in this thread was that other members of the Federation and KDF had explorers and leaders too. Some canon Star Trek has presented key characters from other worlds like Vulcan (Sarek), Andoria (Shran), Klingon (Gorkon), and others.
STO actually gives the players the liberty to creatively explore other cultures not widely publicized in the series such as the Gorn, Bolians, Letheans... and many others. This certainly would not justify the "USS Yo Mamma" coming to save the colony on Genus IV.
While I encourage creativity AND something that fits one's character, personality, and game play, it is nice to see creativity that respects the traditional values of Star Trek canon vice trying to rip off something from other space venues (even as high quality as they may be) such as Star Wars, Andromeda, Stargate, Firefly, and any other content that may or may not have anything remotely to do with Star Trek other than taking place in space with a sci-fi component.
Light Cruiser - U.S.S. Fehervar
Heavy Escort - U.S.S. Budapest-A Heavy Escort Carrier - U.S.S. Budapest-A (personal canon is it's the same ship, but refit to add the hanger)
Not to nitpick, but the Akira class already was a carrier. Cryptic just didn't bother to add that little detail prior to the Armitage's introduction.
I named my Odyssey Star Cruiser USS Leif Ericson, reasoning that the name theme is about famous explorers, mythical or historical. (well technically, Odyssey wasn't an explorer >.>)
I named my Odyssey (that I used to only fly during TTU) USS Discovery, for the ship from 2001.
Wait...what? People don't really ask the opposing team in PvP to stop killing them, do they?
Actually, the optimal ker'rat run is to start a private match and coordinate the match between team captains so that both sides perpetually farm the borg by splitting up targets. I hear you can get some lucrative Mk 12 drops that way.
Back in the day you could get away with some of the licensed names if you played around with it a bit. Shortly after game launch, I had a connie named USS Chekov, and was surprised that there actually wasn't an in-game Chekov yet. I mean what happened to poor Chekov - Sulu got all the props! I also managed to name my assault cruiser USS JL Picard after playing around with that as well, not sure if they've locked down some stuff over the years or not; has anybody managed to name their Defiant after Sisko or anything like that? I also had a toon I managed to name after Bashir and Dax and the system took it, but after a couple of seasons I found you could no longer name characters after them.
My engineer, Justy Ueki Tylor, has always either been in a Soyokaze or UPSF Shuttle. While not original, it's definitely esoteric and uncommon enough that those who do get the reference are amused enough to not get mad.

I get it, and I am amused. Most people probably won't get the reference.

You need character building lessons in responsibility!
"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.
Sometimes, I consider "originality" based on how the rip-off of something else is used...
For example, "SprDmntnlFort. 1" on a Tholian Recluse. Vowels cut due to character limits, I so wanted "Super Dimensional Fortress 1" - Named after a certain Anime ship that was large, "appropriated" from a hostile power, required a rebuild of the interior, and launches fighter-craft type stuff... Said ship really could use the Vesta's "phaser lance" console as a main gun, but until then the Isometric Charge console does the job...
Then there's the "ripping off of song titles", something I've been doing since someone else did it back in the days of SFC. Trick to this one though, is to use semi -rare and -unknown songs - my favorite (aka most abused) song name is "Little Paradise", but I tend to use a lot of other ones "Windscry", "Fallen Angel", "Cry Tough"...
Otherwise, admittedly, my most "blatant" ripoff was taking the toon I've patterned after one of my "dragon" characters and naming her fleet after the standard D&D Chromatic Dragon lineup - Brass, Bronze, Copper, Gold, Silver, Bahamut (story had her patterned after a silver dragon, hence the slight "power" swap having the Silver as the T5 when it should have been Gold).
If anything, my second most "original" name also happened to be a bit of a possible insult and was definitely meant much more for PvP - "Gre'Fer's Bane" on a KDF Raptor, since renamed to the possibly slightly mis-translated "Kinshaya Bat'leh", aka "Demon Sword".
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

I've been seeing a lot of USS Serenity or names like Mal Reynolds lately. One even in the same DSE together like they were holding hands or something.
That's something I don't like about some die-hard Trekkies and science fiction fans - they let the TV do the thinking for them. Nary an original thought pops into their heads.
I fly the I.K.S. Millionation, I.K.S. Cliche, and I.K.S. Moo. Can't remember my Fed ship name though.
At least that's kind of original.

Somewhat unoriginal but I will put more effort into the name of the next ship.

My Fed fleet is the Lone Star Fleet. We have a gentlemen's agreement to name our ships after places, things, themes in Texas, as well as famous Texans through history. My first captain, has commanded a line of ships all named the U.S.S. Karankawa, an extinct tribe from the South Texas coastal region. They were giants of their time, most men averaging over six feet in height, when the average European was around 5'4" tall. My newest captain is commanding the U.S.S. Quanah Parker, the last of the great Comanche chiefs, a fierce warrior in his youth, and a honorable diplomat and statesman in his later years.
As far as my KDF captains go, well my Klingon language skills are a touch rusty, so I just hit the random button til something that looks cool pops up. My current captain, and leader of our sister fleet, mob Hov yo' (translated - Lone Star Fleet) commands the I.K.S. M'Chor.
I have to agree, seeing names of fictional captains from other genres or series, as well as butchered ship names, does tick me off sometimes. I'm not a hardcore Trekker or Trekkie, but I was pushing for more strict naming conventions all throughout early development, into closed beta. And don't get me started on the garish colors of uniforms, been long opposed to that as well.
They make a wondrous mess of things. Brave amateurs, they do their part.

You know some of us do what we can; I have six mains, 3 of each faction...
My Tac flies a Defiant Refit U.S.S. Resolute Named for the desk in the Oval office, My Sci flies Intrepid Class U.S.S. Knightheart... That name is just something I cooked up. My Eng has a Galaxy Class U.S.S. Providence named for the State! As for my KDF ladies they all have a Bird of prey I.K.S. Kahless Ro, Because I liked the Video game Bridge Commander!

Sometimes, if I don't have a name already and I'm not feeling the stuff the name generator spits out at me, I bang on the keyboard, and whatever comes out is some famous mountain on Trill or something
One of my characters has all of their ships named after Norse Valkyries.
My other character's ships are named after animals in the Choctaw language. 'Cause she is a Choctaw Borg who, for whatever reason, does not allow pure organics on her animal ships.
on my Older L50 Federation tacitcal who's last name was Desdinova (Blue Oyster Cult song reference) I went with Imaginos as my ship name, my Runabout was named Cuyahoga (a River near my RW home of Cleveland OH) I've later used musical references for some of my Other ships. on my Engineer I'm going with Zones from city of Heroes.

Just fitting it in with STO canon, which says that the Akira was just a regular escort, until the escort carrier concept was redone in 2409.

Not yet...but now I know the name of my shuttle when I get one
You should give the shuttle the proper loadout so that it is purplish.
