Had once 3 (or four? cannot remember exactly) USS Normandy's next to me.. my IFF System was confused :p.

Most of my Remaining Fed-Ships are named USS Tian'anmen (After PWE took over).

For my remaining Ships i have Names that would pass as a actual Shipname.

    Like
    RRW Vorta Vor
    RRW Centurion
    IKS Ferasa Prime
    S'task (Romulan Palisade)
    Claw (Gorn Hirogen Hunter)
    IKS Prowler...
Beta, LTA, CE, Multiple preorder Versions, all Addon Packs except AoY, nearly all KDF/Rom and ~50% of all Fedships, over 25 LockboxShips, Endurer of Atari's "Year of Hell", but...
    unfortunately:

    NOT LOYAL ENOUGH!!!

It's not so much emulation as homage. I've flown a couple USS Sulacos. I don't think I'm in the USCM, it's like a shoutout to something I love.

Not to mention there's always that tricky question of "what exists in someone else's universe?" I.e., are there star wars holonovels in the holodock, etc?

Also, with however many million ships there are in starfleet, they're probably running out of names. I wouldn't be surprised if there'd be a USS snooki patrolling somewhere on the rim full of the SF cadets who graduated at the bottom of their class.

but no, tell me more about how only you can decide exactly why someone's named their ship what they've named and whether or not it's acceptable.

My ships are named after Science Fiction writers, inventors or scientists... except for my Galaxy Retrofit, which is named after my son.

    USS. Asimov
    USS. Halley
    USS. Tesla

Those are examples of some of my ships!

    I personally focus on originality:
    USS Phlare 202
    USS Autilo Estre
    USS Ebulent Star
    USS Ebulent Cosmos

Edit: The Edynes would be proud of the Autilo Envious.

    I prefer thematic ship names.

My Defiant is called USS Gallant
My Vesta is called USS Schrodinger
My Sovereign is called USS Repulse
My torpedo T'varo is called Cheddarbox (Chatter / cheese box / troll ship)
    ...

But I do see some silly names. Not nearly enough to kill my RPing though.

Ive named my ships things like

    U.S.S. Apache - Advanced Escort
    U.S.S. Whitefall - Obilisk Carrier
U.S.S. Intercept - Tactical Escort Retrofit
U.S.S. Warspite - Patrol Escort Retrofit (Only one I named after another ship and I felt it fitting considering its task in the make up of the Fleet)
U.S.S. Mesa Verde - Yellowstone Runabout (Since Danube Runabouts were named after Rivers I figured a Yellowstone Runabout tradition would be National Parks.)

    My Other Characters have the

    U.S.S. Triage (Science Officer)
    U.S.S. Hephaestus (Engineer Officer)

I would rather see people using somewhat unoriginal names than completely ridiculous names.

U.S.S. Lexington may be unoriginal. But it's far preferable to U.S.S. ROTFLCOPTER-W.

U.S.S. California may be unoriginal. But it's far preferable to U.S.S. Mos Eisley.

U.S.S. Tesla may be unoriginal. But it's far preferable to U.S.S. Chocolate Rain Guy.

I like to give my toons themes for their ship names, for example here's a few,

A nausican who like listening to neil diamond songs while raiding has all his ships named after the singers songs.
A cardasian toon has all his ships named after Star Wars planets,
A catain who's a descendent from listers cat, has red dwarf themed ship names,

And they just get weirder after that, the last thing I want is to pull up to a space dock with a ship with the same name next to me.

Probably the most creative name for a ship that I've thought of is the Cataphract (a form of armored heavy cavalry used in ancient warfare). I got the name from the game Civilization Revolution, and thought it would be fitting for a cruiser, and obscure enough for it to be unique. :D

nebuchardnezzar may not of ever existed. i mean it could of been someones imaginings of someone making up a story and then you got the lack of proof either side.

if i see enough USS Fearless around my ship will be renamed to USS Kartmatu. estonian for fearless :P. slightly more original, but usually coming up with a completely new original name is hard because my mind goes blank after a few minutes trying.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

The name scheme I use depends on the type of ship and what captain I'm using. For example one of my Federation captains uses ships (mainly escorts and cruisers) named for mythical or legendary weapons. Another one's ships are named exclusively for modern spacecraft, starting with the NASA space shuttles (excluding Enterprise of course, that was replaced by the Constitution, the shuttle's planned name before Trekkies got involved) and then branching off to the Russian shuttle program, reusable spacecraft, and finally just spacecraft in general. Then my main's ships are named a bit more haphazardly, based on the ship's type rather than an overall theme, but she mostly uses science vessels named for astronomers and other scientists; the mirror Nova-class USS Hohmann is the latest addition.
Admiral Katrina Tokareva - U.S.S. Cosmos, Yorktown-class Star Cruiser
Admiral Dananra Lekall - R.R.W. Teverresh, Deihu-class Warbird
    General J'Kar son of K'tsulan - I.K.S. Dlahath, Vo'devwl-class Carrier

Right now my flagship is a Fleet Assault Cruiser Refit that uses cannons and turrets, And I named it the USS Horus after the Egyptian god of vengeance, sky, protection and war. So i thought it was fitting.

Mind you most of my ships are after raptors/birds such as the Kestrel. My carrier. (Also a slight homage to the ace combat game <3)

When I first played STO, I was up in arms about the numerous Enterprises, Voyagers, and Defiants with their respective Captains earning an ignore (I even had STOked's Chris on ignore due to his Christopher Pike character), but that all went out the window when they are started to introduce the playable alien ships, and then I was like who cares, and I rarely read another player's ship or name unless they are being offensive.

This game is a holodeck and we are playing our own personal versions of STO's history for 25th Century and when I took that approach, the game's immersion came back a little.

For over a year prior to f2p, I flew the MVAM USS Yggdrasil, and promptly renamed it after seeing that name crop up like pimples.

My personal favourites are people who name their ship USS X - A

Apparently they missed all those episodes of Star Trek where the letter goes on the ships registry not on the name.

    So USS Enterprise
    NCC-1701-D

    Not USS Entperise-D
    NCC-1701-D

I know what you mean, but I can understand why a player adds the letter where they do. Since your ship name has to be unique, not your registry, to keep the same name would requre renaming your old ship first, and then using the name again.

For some that may just be too much effort.

My Romulan and Reman name their ships Latin names, (Birds in Latin for the Romulan) because Romulaness; my Vulcan is a Earth music aficionado, so he names his ship after music types (ie Operetta and Nocturne), and my Klingon, being kind of a foody has named his ships after cuts of meat, and his T5 ship is the Grand Chef

I've been seeing a lot of USS Serenity or names like Mal Reynolds lately. One even in the same DSE together like they were holding hands or something.

That's something I don't like about some die-hard Trekkies and science fiction fans - they let the TV do the thinking for them. Nary an original thought pops into their heads.

heh and those are the ones you recognize. The well-read players have obscure stolen names/references from wherever. Heck even the game of thrones chars have been seen in space.

Its hardly unique to trekkies or sci-fi. The neverwinter game has about 3 thousand drizzits. Lotro has its fair share of fellowship names. You see it in every type of game.

I don't even watch tv and I have a throwaway character (grind rep, collect dil, delete) with a borrowed firefly name. Why bother to be ultra creative if the end goal is deletion?

My personal highlight was a "USS Bratwurst" (or something like that).

I mean come one, be a bit more creative and call your ship "currywurst" or "leberk

I gave up on thinking about names in a game. Even if my names were cool, 99% of all others don't fit the games world.

So I decided to pick only fun names on my characters and ships.

My Ferengi "Max Profit" is captian of the U.S.S. Serious Business
My PvP Tac: T'Pwn - U.S.S. Ownage Time
My PvP Eng Healer: Lyrion Tannister - S.O.S. Selfown

    etc.etc.

Im wondering, why struggle at giving your ship a name?
Instead of ruining the immersion of other people, just use the randomizer.

I mean you're not alone in this game.
