Unoriginal ship names

I've been seeing a lot of USS Serenity or names like Mal Reynolds lately. One even in the same DSE together like they were holding hands or something.

That's something I don't like about some die-hard Trekkies and science fiction fans - they let the TV do the thinking for them. Nary an original thought pops into their heads.

A true die-hard Trekker wouldn't name her ship after one from a different show.

In fact, a true die-hard Trekker would not only complain about people not finding enough original names, but also whine about people not having grammatically correct names, names that don't fit in the common scheme used by the random ship name generator (i.e. names that only matter to people who speak English and live in the western world), using NX- prefix on non-experimental ships, not having mirror universe ship prefixes for mirror ships, the presence of "alien" ships in Starfleet or the KDF, why their favorite kitbash from the novels isn't in the game, why transphasics can't pop elite tactical cubes in 1 hit, why Starfleet/KDF players would use any weapons EXCEPT Phasers/Disruptors, why the Defiant is not as small in-game as the runabout is today, battle cloaks for the Defiant and Gal-X, and all manner of canon offenses.

Then they'd loudly declare that they and everyone else is going to quit if Cryptic and "P2WE" doesn't do what they want right now.

I tend to name my ships for actual cities, geological formations or historically-significant (non-German or American) ships. And if the ships follow a name scheme, like the Danubes always being named after rivers, I follow that.

    Steamrunner's USS Kyoto
HEC's USS Soryu (It is a carrier, afterall)
    Danube's USS Mojave

A few times I've diverted from this, but again, uncommon names, names I've never seen reused.

Prometheus is USS Mjolnir (Following the Prometheus' theme of being named after myth)

It's exceptionally easy to come up with original ship names. People are just uncreative. It's like when Burning Sea first came out, every ship had black sales, had a toon named Jack Sparrow (or some butchering there of) driving it and was named Black Pearl...

Well, Prometheus is a Greek myth, while Mjolnir is a Norse God's weapon. The rest of the Advanced Escort classes were also all taken from Greek mythology.

    Just sayin', not judgin'.

My Caitian science officer's first ship was the USS Gealic. As he progressed, the ships went with the generic A, B, C, etc suffixes. When he became a Captain, it changed.

    USS Bebhionn
    Lunar Class

Bebhionn is a moon of Saturn. Named for Bebinn, the Irish goddess of birth. So the new name fit both the Celtic type and the Lunar class naming structure.

So what's the name of you're original ship that no one in the world thought of?

STO and Mass Effect 2 released in the same general timeframe of 2010.

Since then, there's been more Shepards flying around in a U.S.S./I.K.S. Normandy than I can count. It has calmed down a little since.

Not to mention I've probably seen, ballparking, six different 'Nebuchadnezzar's and only one of them managed to spell it right.

If you're going to crib a popular name, folks, at least Google its spelling before you wind up being snorted at for your 'Nabukaneza'. I know Star Trek is the bastion of the Mary Sue, but dayumn, gurl..

I named my Odyssey Star Cruiser USS Leif Ericson, reasoning that the name theme is about famous explorers, mythical or historical. (well technically, Odyssey wasn't an explorer >.>)

I've seen "Tabloid Man" captaining the "U.S.S. Weekly", and Klingon General "Lemme" captaining the "I.K.S. You Somethin."

So yes, names are quite original, just not in the way you probably want.

I think the only time I ever named one of my ships after another ship that already had the same name was the USS Enterprise (though, since I couldn't use that exact spelling, it was the USS Enterprize) and that was only because it was a NCC-1701 Constitution Class. :)

Since then, I try to name my ship using last names of people from television shows I like, but I like to think that the shows I pick wouldn't be instantly recognizable by a lot of people, though, like anything else, it depends on the people I run into on my missions. :D

(for example, my current ship is the USS Callaghan which is named for Jules Callaghan of the CTV/ION TV series "Flashpoint") :) Though since it's not a fandom-specific name, it's random enough that, if someone saw it, they might not immediately get why I chose it unless they either asked me or they knew me well enough.

I saw a ship named Voiagher last night.

It's like..seriously? If you have to butcher a name that bad, it's probably a good idea to use something else.

I tend to be a little less creative myself. Though I generally don't go the scifi route, I do however have a habit of naming ships after anime girls... I dunno why, just looks good on a spaceship.

My Flagship, the Immortal however, is a name I have been using on my ships dating back to my pen-n-paper days, so I sorta just stuck with it (kinda like the Darkshadow handle which I've been using since the 70's.. though I tend to go by Greyshadow more these days...getting old)

My current and primary ship is the USS Odyssey.

Hardly original, given that there was a doomed Galaxy-class in DS9 and the class-leader for STO's Federation flagship by the same name.

Still, I feel that the name perfectly suits the spirit of Trek, as opposed to all the Enterprizes, D3f14nts and V0y4g3rs out there, not to mention "Destructors", "Invincibles" etc.

And don't get me started on non-Klingon names for Klingon starships.

I'm not sure if i'm being original, but i took some names from the norse mythology.
My main ship is an Oddyssey named U.S.S Brunhild (Well, to be honest, I named her after another fictional ship with the same name :P ).

My other ships are the U.S.S Niflheim , the U.S.S Jotunheim the U.S.S Gjallarhorn, the U.S.S Skinfaxi and the U.S.S. Hrimfaxi.
My only ship which doesn't fit the mythological theme is the U.S.S Pausanias.

But i agree with the OP, there are so many ships with weird names

Yeah, I don't know what I find more dumb: the U.S.S. Enderprise/Enterbrise with Kirc as Captains name or the U.S.S. Normandy with a captain named Shepard -.-

But still better than the U.S.S. L33T Warrior :-P

I have a friend who sets all the people with stupid names on his ignore list :-P

My ships are often named after villages in my country. Except for my Steamrunner: U.S.S. Haerzbexelchen xD

Of particular note is the Shepards flying the giant cruisers and dreadnoughts named U.S.S. Normandy. It's not only a lazy rip, but it's not even the right type of ship!

If you're going to pretend like you're in Mass Effect, at least fly a Defiant named Normandy.

Event Horizon (movie was OK, but I like the name)
    White Star
    Black Star

    Edit...almost forgot my favorite "Ecliptic"

Actually, the level of un-originality is quite wide spread indeed. Such as buying a Galaxy Class and naming it the U.S.S. Enterprise D, or buyng the retrofit of the Intrepid Class so you can name it the U.S.S. Voyager 2 (both of which I have seen), or the several copies of U.S.S. Defiant running around. Even worse yet are the dumb names like the I.K.S. Yer'Dead, or the U.S.S. Took'Yer'Pants.... I mean, really? Is creativity that difficult?

Take me for example. For my ships, I name them after historical and record setting aircraft, or the pilots themselves. For example, my Odyssey Tactical is named "Mriya," in honour of the Antonov An-225. And the registry number is taken in honour of the very first Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird." The tail number of the very first was 61-7950, but I changed the 6 to a 9 to suit STO requirements.
I completed a 2-man CSE, ISE, and KASE, Optionals included. And I soloed Winter Invasion.

I am not sure which class of names are more offensive to me :P

The lazy rip offs "The Enterpizzzze, the Normandy, the Serenity, a timeship named TARDIS"

    OR

The Lazy insults "USS I-KEEL-U. USS EATMYPLASMA USS OMGSTFU IKS KlingonStyle"

The Normandy's and the Serenity's I can ALMOST right off, as they can actually be ship names. but if it is a Shepard in a Normandy, or a Reynolds in a Serenity... then I am more likely to ignore you.

For a while I named all my ships after Greek Mythology, But after I while I saw how popular THAT was "USS Athena..." So with my Vesta I switched to explorers, The USS Magellan. Seemed to be unique and a classy starship name.

However, I would personally LOVE for soemone to name their ship after a noncanon explore/scientist/political leader of a canon race. Who was the first Trill to Circumnavigate the globe?? Who was the Andorian Astronaut to orbit their parent planet? Totally up for grabs and would be completely valid.

Humans aren't the only species with first :P

I name my PvP ship after my PvP tactics. That is, flying a Hegh'ta with a hit-and-run burst DPS build, intended to blast through enemy shields and maim the hull, hopefully killing them in 1-2 runs before my buffs turn off :P

    I.K.S. Sudden Death.
My PvP toon is Krov, of The House of Snoo. Beware of my Hegh'ta of doom.

I'm not a real trekkie to be honest, I've seen some movies when I was a kid, and the latest one. So I don't really know about ship naming in the lore, I try to make it sound "appropriate" however. The only lore I've searched about was the Romulan one. For some reasons, I love them.

My betazoid is using mostly egyptian mythology name. She is supposed to have been raised by human, and having unknown parents. A cheap excuse to use a non betazoid name, since I was lazy to check Betazoid naming and lore when I created her.
Her escort name is Sekhmet (goddess of war and destruction and revenge)
I use great creatures/god names for my shuttle, because it's somewhat ridiculous. Her shuttle is named either Fafnir (a dragon, viking mythology however), or Apep (a giant snake god).

My half Romulan/Human use latin mythology name. Obviously because she is half romulan (->latin name) and human (->human mythology). Sort of bridge between her two cultures.
Her escort is the Rhea Silvia, the goddess of war.
She used to fly the Lupus (latin word for wolf, the one who raised Romulus and Remus in the mythology).
Her shuttle is called Draco (latin word for dragon).

My other half Romulan/human (twin sister with the other one) is using either great scientist name/place (she is a science officer) or Romulan names.
Her science ship is named Rihan, Romulus name according to the lore, tribute to the destroyed planet and countless dead.
She used to fly the Alamagordo, the place for the first nuclear bomb test, and also part of several space project, including the first chimpanzee in space. But it's mainly a tribute to Screamers, a movie I enjoyed a lot when I was a teenager, where the hero use the password Alamagordo to unlock the shuttle and escape the planet in the end. Also, I love the sound of that name^^
Her shuttle is "Shrodinger cat". I though it was fun. I know it's Shrodinger's cat, but I was 1 letter short.

However, both my half romulan/human use Romulan naming for their second and last name. The naming used in the lore, and currently used ingame for New Romulus/Mol'Rihan content. And I used this naming before New Romulus was released, I didn't know if I should keep it, because according to wikipedia, it was not cannon.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rihannsu
Since season 7, it seems it's cannon, and the wikipedia is wrong, so I kept the name.

My primary is the U.S.S. Shining Armor, a Galaxy class ship.
My secondary is the U.S.S. Twilight Sparkle, a Sovereign class ship.

The rest of my ships are also named after My Little Pony, because I like My Little Pony, and these are my ships. I have earned them, I have bought some, but regardless, they are mine to do with as I please. I figure name your ship whatever you like, and enjoy your world as much as you want. It's not Star Trek, and it never really was, so make it feel the way you like, and I say that as a long time Trek fan.

I simply put every shipname or playername that I don't like on my ignore list and the name disappears. It doesn't hurt the other player nor me so everyone is happy ^^

There is also an option to hide other players name. So if you are annoyed by "USS Smurfette" with Captain "Papa Smurf" just turn it off. For me it works pretty well.

Oh, I have a wide array of ships, some original, some not.

Among my worst are the ships owned by my first Engineer. Each is named after one of the Divines from The Elder Scrolls lore; Arkay, Akatosh, Julianos, Zenithar, Stendarr, Mara, Dibella, Kynareth, and Talos.

I have a tactical toon flying the USS Uriel Septim as well, the name of an important Emperor and historical figure also from the Elder Scrolls.

Others are a little more thoughtful. For example, one of my science toons commands the USS Wild Hunt. Figured it made sense since it's an Escort Carrier, and I liked the sound of it.

Another toon commands the USS Raleigh, a sort of dual name as it represents both the state capital of my home state, as well as Sir Walter Raleigh.

Then of course there's my main tactical toon commanding the USS V'nashir. It is named after a character my girlfriend plays occasionally in Elder Scrolls titles. Incidentally, the ship's registry number corresponds to her character's birth era and year (with the addition of the 9 in front to meet STO standards).

I have various other ships; IKS Erinyes, after the three Furies; IKS Essenthor, a name I made up; USS Pentacle, named for the unfortunately misunderstood five-pointed star symbol often associated with Satan; USS Highmoss, named for another of my girlfriend's TES characters; and the USS Manchester, which has a funny story behind it. The character is sort of a gag character named Rip Manslab who was named in the tradition of this MST3K clip. I then claimed my TOS Connie to start him out. Naturally I LOL'D HARD when the name of my Generic Manly Man ship was the USS Manchester. Get it? Man chest? Get it?! :D So I kept it. Currently it is on its -D iteration, the only ship I have higher than a -B.
