My Mirror Class Cruiser is the ISS Janus
My Chimera Heavy Destroyer is named the USS Manticore

I thought they seemed rather fitting

I think it's just ridiculous how people think they can just come to the game a play how they want, or what makes them happy. This is Star Trek, and there are rules. People just need to live by them. You just can't come along and name your ship something silly, that would be like some director coming along and recreating Star Trek in his own vision with no consideration for canon...oh wait...never mind, carry on. :D

My ships for my main Fed toon have fairly original names. I name them after famous US Marines or battles the USMC was involved in. I have the USS Chesty Puller, the USS Iwo Jima, the USS Henderson and the USS White Feather. My klink tho, I follow nordic mythos
naming conventions for all her ships.

I don't mind the names from other series, etc. People will do what they want, those names have meaning for them. What I notice more is when I run across names I've used, or misspelled names -- I'm never sure whether it's deliberate or stupid.

My 5 Federation admirals are flying Odysseys:
    • U.S.S. Hornet - NCC-91714
    • U.S.S. Intrepid - NCC-91631 (with a Vulcan crew)
    • U.S.S. Lexington - NCC-91709
    • U.S.S. Potemkin - NCC-91657
    • U.S.S. Excalibur - NCC-91664

All names from TOS-era Constitution-class ships -- Hornet wasn't actually used on camera until TNG, but it was on some lists of possible names to be used. This convention "works" for me, since the Enterprise-F is an Odyssey-class ship. Registry numbers are from the original ships, with a "9" prefix as per STO conventions.

The Hornet's Aquarius destroyer is going to be named the U.S.S. Stinger, as soon as I can buy one from my fleet's shipyard.

My 4 Klingon generals are flying Bortasq's, named for Chancellors of the High Council:
    • I.K.S. K'mpec
    • I.K.S. M'rek
    • I.K.S. Kravokh
    • I.K.S. Kaarg

I had to go to Memory Beta for most of these names, since names like "Gowron" and "Martok" are restricted.

Whatever floats your boat ... or starship.

I came close to using Potemkin before settling on Albuquerque, and I also used ww2 carrier names for my other 2 fed cruisers:
    Valley Forge and Shangri La.

Great minds think alike (or lack creativity)

My first ship was the U.S.S. Soyokaze. My current is the U.S.S. Lues Rosaceae. (Calamities Rose) It's a phase. Some grow out of it, others don't. :P

Original names? Doubt there are many.

    Excelsior class: Mobile Bay, Birmingham

    (Battle and a City)

    Odyssey class: Aeneid, Bisei

(Roman Poem & Japanese for "Beautiful Star")

Reliant class: Salient, Resistance (pretty common)

Anything else? Oh "Galaxy Quest". ;)

And the "USS Dolby" for my science ship (after Thomas Dolby, for surround sound and "She Blinded Me With Science!"

My ships get their names from one of three sources:

Something funny (Bells 'n' whistles, kitty committee etc)
Mecha anime(Ra Cailum, Gespenst, Astray etc)
ship name elsewhere (Kuun-Lan, Faal-Corum, Tiger Claw), provided it fits the ship profile.

With the launch of the Vesta I rethought my Sci character's ship names. Originally planning to name his Atrox "Ra Cailum"(Char's Counterattack mobile suit carrier, limited capacity) I feel the name fits the Vesta line better, so I plan to use Tiger Claw(Wing Commander) instead, solely as the name fits.

A partial ship list for my main (Fed Tac, provides greatest spread of examples):
Defiant class "Gespenst"(SRW, fits as name is Ghost)
Prometheus class "Aquarion" (titular mech, nickname this one 'Solar Wing')
Prometheus class "Valsione" (SRW, highly mobile)
Odyssey class "Bells 'n' Whistles" (comic, has all 3 consoles on board)
    Atrox class "Kitty Committee" (comedy)
Akira class "Trombe" (SRW, my signature ship)
Steamrunner class "Ur fooked"(Irony, as I think the ship is poor compared to others on my roster)
Peregrine class "Hagane" (SRW, used to be named Falcon)
    Sovereign class "Justice"(Gundam)
    Galaxy class "Impulse" (Gundam)
    Galaxy-X class "Legend" (Gundam)
    Delta Flyer "Cherudim" (Gundam)
    Aeon class "Banjax" (Irony)
    Vesta class "Zeta" (Gundam)
    Intrepid class "Stargazer" (Gundam)
    Aquarius class "Apollonius" (Aquarion)
Gryphon class "Freedom" (Gundam, also my first T5 ship, having all my levelling ships also named Freedom)

I've seen more than a few "Justice"s, "Legend"s and "Freedom"s, but the rest of my ships I've yet to see their name adorned on the hull of another.
    Ikuzo, Trombe!

Skinfaxi and Hrimfaxi. Ace Combat 4. Awesome. I'd say those are damned creative names.

Considering the fate of those two subs, that is kinda like naming your ship the Titanic.
Current names I've gone with are the Tortuga, Solomon, Enuma Elish and Babylon. On the other end of the spectrum I have a toon named Donald Duck, captain of the Mythtanic, Scrooge and Duckburg.

Ive taken a similar approach .
ive taken my ship names for my fed eng and my klingon toons from Gundams universal century warships. , Ra Cailum and Nahel Argama being my eng primary 2 ships and Dolos and Musai and Chivvay for my klingon .
my sci fed toon takes spacecraft names from 00 gundam . Ptolemaios and Euclidies i think fits nicely with sci ships .

I tried going for themed ship names on my characters, but after I while began naming
the ships more on an individual basis.

My D'Kyr is called Kir'Shara ,after the Vulcan artifact (I loved that episode arc in ENT ).
My Defiant is called Anathema, since her captain is somewhat of a rogue personality...
My Mobius destroyer is called the U.S.S. Farscape, because I love that show as well and
it just fits very well for the ships crew :)
My main character's freighter is called the S.S. Sanctuary, because I spend a lot of time in that
ship and it kinda feels like a safe haven.

My silliest ship name is for my Klingon character's Bird of Prey: I.K.S. El Pollo Diablo ;)

How interesting. I guess my ship names are relatively original. Not that I really need anyone's approval. What is the point of this thread other than to bash people you don't know because you don't like their ship name?

While not original names, they are all cruisers and named them after similar starships from the shows.

Assault Cruiser Refit - USS Yorktown
Fleet Heavy Cruiser Retrofit - USS Endeavour
Fleet Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit - USS Lexington

I orignally named my D'kora the Jolly Roger, but never liked it. Once I decided on a theme for the ship (Debuff with Polarized-Disruptors and Attack Pattern Beta, while using DEM), the name USS Gremlin seemed appropriate.

Almost forgot... my Tac. All his ships (all escorts) have been named the USS Tuskegee.

I use Zetohavren, Zetoravren, Zeto-Jet(shuttle), and Zeto so on, because I like my name ^_^ and no one else has it.... I will crush the other Zeto Class Vessels out there!!!!!!!!!!!

I also name my ships according to the class...

My escorts i think are Zetohaven

My Science are Zetomavren, or Zetoreaper.

And my other ships are aptly nameed LOL only the modle number I use is like 939292-X or 9438328- S

I do have a science ship called the U.S.S. Carl Sagan. Yeah, it's unoriginal, but since I have deep, abiding respect for the man, I had to name it after him. It just didn't feel right otherwise.

I have seen a few Spaceball One's here and there, and those are always fun. :D

Yeah, they're not particularly original, but I at least try for something that sounds interesting. Perhaps only to me, I suppose. :P

My first Fed has flown the Ancalagon, the Artemis, the Athena, the Lovely Angel, the Succubus, and is currently tooling around in the Morning Mist.

My Orion, Dejah Thoris, and her crew of dancing girls have crewed the Barsoom, the Labrys, the Lovely Angel, and the Sol Bianca.

And my new Fed has so far had the Agamemnon, the Ariadne, and the Athena.

Not sure what I'll be naming my Breen ships. /shrug

I don't mind unoriginal names, as long as they fit the theme of the game. Mind you, I'm not going to complain about the dumber names, I'll just roll my eyes and move on. No doubt some hardcore Trekkies wouldn't be fond of some of my own ship names.

    My main character's ships include:
    USS Ginzuishou
    USS Dangunzelion
    USS Dragon Angel
    USS Misty Fencer

Spotted in Sector Space, a character by the name of 'Back in the'. The ship was called 'R'. So it looked like this:

    USS R

I tried naming a Luna Class "USS Io" but couldn't because you had to have more than three letters, is that still in effect then?
The Continuing Voyages of Bridge Commander
Captain Lee Drake - USS Sovereign
    Captain Draxon - IKS RanKuf
    Commander Torenn - IRW Soryak
Captain Gregory MacCray - USS Geronimo

Meh. I find people who use ship/character names as an outlet for their pretentious d-baggery to be just as annoying as the 50,000 "U.S.S. Serenity" out there.

And then there's the little kids who think it's a work of comedic genious to find ways to sneak in some toilet humor.

Best not to pay attention to it.

I can live with characters and ships named after tv/movie characters. Thankfully STO has been spared an abundance of repetitive names and most players will sit and think of what they want to call their character and ship and come up with something original. The name generator also does its job well.

One thing I am hugely thankful for is that STO seems to have dodged the bullet that all other MMO's were hit with and having umpteen characters on ESD all called Sephiroth or some sort of variation. Nothing more annoying than seeing "xxSephirothxx flying the U.S.S. Jenova 12".

I name my ships after famous desserts. I have USS Pancakes (Steamrunner cos its so flat...), then i have USS Pecan Pie (Chip loves pecan pie!), then USS Root Beer Float, USS Cheesecake, USS Apple Crumble.

Gonna name my Breen ship USS Fondue :-)

    Yummy!

    Veyron
    Lucrezia
    Meluhha

the only ship that i kept the name that it came with is the "Kashmir". i showed my wife when i got the defiant that is was named Kashmir. we both really liked it. our first cat was named Kashmir. he was a very cool cat.

Trying to keep thinking up original ships names across six characters got to be a bit of a chore, although there is very little overlap. Just for fun, I'll list off a few here

    USS Adamantium (Dreadnaught)
USS Hammer (Odessey, NOT stolen from the Matrix :P)
USS Hydra (Chimera, it seemed appropriate)
USS Black Dragon (Prometheus, I wanted a dark ship with a dark name)
USS Scorpion (Defiant, she lived up to her name :D )
USS Wayfarer (Vesta, not happy with it)
IKS PuQ (whatever the lifer Destroyer is. Not sure where I got that from)
IKS Sam'B (Negh'Var, named for the Dead Island singer "Who do you Voodoo?")

There are dozens more, but I can't recite them while I'm not in the game.

People are playing how they want and that is how they get their immersion. I chuckle at silly names. And this game is lucky in that we dont see XxlegolasxX and 30 variants of sephiroth.

I usually name my ships after the weapon skills of my monk ranger and red mage from my favorite mmo. FFXI. My escorts are asurans fists. And i have heavenly strike and howling fist.

My klingon are from my favorite book. Character Named Kvothe. And the IKS eolian. But for my bort i did use asuran fist again.
