Oh, and just to float some more problem solving intel here, since Branflakes has commented in this thread. The only changes I can fathom that have occurred with my system, since I was last able to successfully log in, were all on account of a Windows Update, which I installed on 8/14/2012. Here's what Windows Update installed:

And that's exactly why I didn't bother with this 'uninstall' and 'reinstall' business myself! Though, I appreciate you having been intrepid enough to try it yourself Bannon. Whilst I never thought such action would result in a solution, I was still hoping that it might work for ya and, consequently, all of us. Yet, alas still no STO luv.

While you were at that, despite the fact that I instinctively knew it would accomplish nothing that 'ipconfig' might've resolved, I just completely disconnected my cable modem (as PWE Support suggested). I left it completely unplugged for as long as it took me to cleanse my bowels and read a few paragraphs of a TNG novel I've been reading.

Reconnected the cable modem and still stuck with the same "Unable to establish connection to Patch Server" message.

Well, at least the bowel movement and TNG novel paragraphs were satisfying! Though, I kinda wish I had been able to print that PWE support response email on to toilet paper.:P

I used to like the Trek books when they revolved around the Enterprise-D days, Q Squared is by far the best. Have it on the iPad. I have tried the shutting down my router business, back in May when this nonsense began for me (yes its been happening this long) that trick worked, alas no more. I need some sleep, I hope the tech team doesnt take weekends off.

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed 'Q Squared'! Peter David writes some great Trek! I'm currently reading 'The Romulan Prize' and it's been an excellent read thus far. Truly makes me pine for a Romulan faction or more Romulan content in STO someday. That is, if I'm ever able to get back into STO at all!

I'm finishing an extra large glass of red wine and then hitting the hay myself. Equally hoping the devs somehow resolve this issue by tomorrow morning.

well I finally got in what I did was ran CMD and did ipconfig /release... /renew ... and /flush dns then I used Run then typed DXDIAG let it check the drivers to see if they were digitally signed. Then ran the launcher and I got through. It may have been that or it was fixed elsewhere but I've been able to run it a few times without fail. That may change tomorrow but wanted to let you guys know what I did in case it helps.

Hiya Macfelly! Wondering if you might've done anything special, like a systems restart, beyond, what you just described here? Anything special about DXDIAG, beyond simply letting it run and clicking 'next page' and verifying everything's okay (which I did twice, both in its default and 64-bit modes)? Most importantly, when you stated "It may have been that or it was fixed elsewhere", might that suggest that you may have done something else (other than ipconfig and DXDIAG)? If so, what?

I ran CMD and all the ipconfig commands, as you suggested and then ran DXDIAG as well. Still get the same nonsense upon clicking on the STO .exe icon on my desktop.

I've officially given up for the evening and sincerely hope this all gets sorted out by tomorrow morning.

I'm also having this same issue where I can't connect any cryptic's webpages: startrekonline.com, champions-online.com, crypticstudio.com. and Both STO, and CO launchers won't connect. BUT pidgin will connect through crypticspace.com.

I did a tracert for all the sites and seems to always die or not get a response after going through Congentco's Boston router.

Thats what happens sadly, you get this rare window where it just works again then not, which all the more points to this being an issue on their end. I am anxious to fly that Sovereign refit, come on guys!!

I also dont think the tech guys work over the weekend, but I could be wrong. I think we are waiting until some time next week and hopefully not much more. One more thing, the number of players not able to log in could be far greater, they just dont come to the forums to complain about it.

I got hit by this AGAIN last night shortly after exiting the game (I forgot to do something ingame and went to load up again). I just left it. Better things to do than stare at the autoupdater. I came back this morning (my system was hibernating), and it works again.

    Inconsistent issue is inconsistent.

I'm kinda shocked that you've been enduring this for six days now Warslord1! Best I can tell (from peeking at my game files), I was last logged into STO from late night this past Sunday, 8/12, up until about 3:30AM, in the wee hours of Monday morning, 8/13. This problem, at least for me, clearly started sometime between then and yesterday morning. So, potentially, I too have been unable to login for five days or so now.

Eeb3, your post really intrigued me. While I hadn't logged in since last Monday morning and only encountered this launcher failure bug just yesterday; I tend to make a daily ritual of checking in on these forums and a strange thing happened on either Wednesday of Thursday. Upon clicking my bookmark for this Forum, via both Google Chrome and Explorer, I kept getting a prompt that 'X couldn't open the page or the page was down'.

I finally thought to use Google search, and while I got the same page load failure, it allowed me to access a cached version of this Forum. I clicked on a link, to some thread, on the cached Forum page and it opened the thread. I then used the 'login' button from that page and I was magically logged back onto the Forum!

Now, here's the rub, as I discovered it; This is the address of the bookmark which allowed me to access this forum, before the mystery switch happened (on either Wednesday or Thursday):
    http://forums.startrekonline.com/

And this is the address of my current Forum bookmark, which works and allows me to be typing here, now:
    http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/index.php

The big mystery being...how did this change happen??!! I certainly didn't do anything to instigate the change, to the best of my knowledge. Yet, clearly, the address for this Forum changed sometime, of its own accord seemingly, sometime Wednesday or Thursday.

I can't help wondering if all this is tied into the problem that we've all been enduring here. As of now, my internet connection is somehow not connecting to the Cryptic Autoupdate Launcher, much like it hadn't been able to connect to this Forum at one point, before I found the new address.

Oh, and while I have been able to see everything here on the Forum, just fine, I have noticed that I haven't been able to access the C-Store, despite the fact that the top of the C-Store page shows me as logged in to my PWE account. Just can't see the store inventory window, as it states "The webpage is unavailable...etc., etc."

Sadly Bannon3, I too am starting to think that this isn't going to get resolved this weekend, on account of the devs likely being off. What's more, I too can't help wondering how many others have been effected by this problem and either are unable to post on this Forum or too frustrated or lazy to do so. I would think it's highly unlikely that those of us who have posted in this thread are the only ones who have been effected by this problem.

And, based on all the digging I did last night (via Google and searches on this forum itself), it's pretty evident that this exact same problem has happened a number of times before. Scary part is that, despite repeated threads like this one (going back to last year and beyond), I didn't find a single concrete solution to our problem.

Everything I found on this subject either suggested that this problem somehow resolved itself, assumeably via fixes by the devs, without any declaration on the devs part on why the problem had occurred or how they fixed it; or those folks that complained and brainstormed among each other, in threads similar to this one, quite possibly just gave up on the game altogether.

Giving up on this game is not an option, as I've spent wayyyyy too much money on it already, to simply walk away. So, I'm really, really, really, really hoping that this nonsense somehow gets resolved soon!!!

Oh, and one last thing. If you have received a response from PWE Support and none of their suggested fixes worked (as several of us can attest to), then please make sure to respond to their emails, until either they resolve this issue or the devs do!

I know, as I have said I havent been able to log in consistently since May. I really thought week before last when the launcher opened right away and kept doing so it had been fixed, and I too have sunk alot of money into this game, however I WILL walk away to make a point and deprive them of my money, Gotta hit them where it will be noticed sometimes although I dont want to cancel and walk away at all!! If branflakes hasnt forgotten us come Monday lets hope we see some movement on this problem, or just become real squeaky wheels. One more thing support has ignored me since Wednesday, I should send them an email like they do us, we havent heard from you so we will assume this problem is NOT solved!!! GET TO WORK!!! lol

Not so sure that I can say that I was fortunate, but I did receive an email from PWE support (the contents of which I posted earlier in this thread), just a few hours after I had put in a report to them. Yet, I have done absolutely everything they suggested, barring a reinstall of the game itself, as others here seem to have done that to no avail and I can't help thinking that might cause more problems than simply resolve this issue.

If push comes to shove...and it's looking that it might...if I reinstall the game, should I uninstall the game before doing a reinstall? Or will a reinstall give specific prompts for overwriting files? My suspicion is that, if the problem is on our end, rather than PWE/Cryptic's end, then I suspect that somehow the files associated with our Cryptic Update Launcher have somehow become corrupted. No idea how obviously, but it's a thought.

I like to think that I run my PC like a pretty tight ship. Always make sure Windows, all drivers and software are updated. I regularly update and run AVG scans (been using AVG's free version since last December and haven't had a single PC problem since). Always have AVG and my Windows Firewall up and running (except when I'm running STO, to reduce lag).

Seriously, I haven't had a single problem with this game until this bug we've been experiencing. And it's killing me that I haven't been able to find a solution (been troubleshooting PC woes since I was a kid, with a Commodore Vic-20, for frak's sake!) and PWE Tech Support's suggestions have been useless.

Yet, apparently, this issue isn't effecting every player, just some of us. And there's absolutely no indication as to why???!!!!

I'm gonna pop Malwarebytes on to my system and see if it pops up with anything that might resolve this issue. Haven't had to use Malwarebytes, since my PC's makeover last December. Yet, this login/update issue has got me at wit's end.

Keep ya all posted and please post away if any of ya guys finally found a solution!!!

I think I'm done, tired of not being able to play when my internet is quite capable of playing the game. I've dumped way over $300 into this game and I can't use any of the items I've purchased but others are able to play. Also seriously look into getting some actual tech people instead of the collage dropouts you have now. I want to play when I want, not when the server feels like letting me in.

Just a quick update. Downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware twice. Quick scan produced one item, which I promptly removed. Then ran a full scan (took nearly an hour) and that scan found absolutely nothing.

Tried to login to STO again and still stuck with the same bug. At this point, if the tech people have weekends off, then I think we're all screwed until at least Monday.

I did find something that peaked my curiosity in a thread related to this one though. Lance1967 indicated the following:
"Note: I even went to the extreme and redownloaded and installed STO all over again (before a brain cell actually fired and I thought about checking the forums for help). I've notice that the new install PATH for the 2 .exe files are now under:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Cryptic Studios\CrypticError.exe
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online.exe"

Funny thing about that is that my STO program files are located at:
    C:\Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios

I wonder who else might have their files located where mine are, who's also been suffering from this login/launch bug?

Thats where mine are too. I suppose you can always reinstall and put the files where you want them to go, thats what i did last night when I tried the download I made new folders for everything. For everyone posting and those quite upset I am there with you, I feel the pain. I too have dropped a TRIBBLE load of money on add ons and goodies in the cstore plus bought the collectors edition in the beginning, you know before this nonsense began I was seriously considering buying the lifetime, can you imagine how much worse the pain would be right now?!!

I too have dropped a TRIBBLE load of money on add ons and goodies in the cstore plus bought the collectors edition in the beginning, you know before this nonsense began I was seriously considering buying the lifetime, can you imagine how much worse the pain would be right now?!!
Intriguing that your game files are in the same location! My gut instinct tells me that this all boils down to some problem with either IP/ISP addressing or STO software file accessing.

For instance, previous patches might have been tuned in to certain IP protocols and cleared successfully, allowing for proper patching and login. Similarly, and with specific regard to our relative STO file locations, perhaps previous patches were tuned into specific locations on user hard-drives (likely both the location paths described above), in order to facilitate patching.

Perhaps that somehow got screwed up with the last patch protocols? So, that players with files located at 'C:\Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios' have been unable to get to the Cryptic Launcher Autoupdate? While players with files located at 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Cryptic Studios' have been able to patch and login properly?

I know that I've discussed game file locations with my pal who has been able to connect lately. And, if I recall correctly, his files are located at 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Cryptic Studios'. Whereas my files and Bannon3's have been located at 'C:\Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios'.

Can't help wondering if that might be connected to our problem!

With having had something like this happen, I would honestly hesitate from buying a lifetime membership, whilst I've contemplated doing so, once more income starts rolling in. That said, I have already spent somewhere around and likely in excess of $200 on all sorts of stuff for this game, 'cause I've loved Trek for about 38 years now and I'm always keen on maximizing my in-game experience.

When I was last logged in, I had just commissioned and named a Mirror Universe Assault Cruiser, which I had won through at an SSR party. I held off on customizing the ship and trying it out until next time. Also last time, some really nice fella had invited me to his starbase and I got inadvertently trapped there (yet another bug I've been meaning to write about!). He felt so bad about it that he gave me 30 Nakura requisition boxes as compensation for my trapped woe. I had only opened one and was intent on digging into and sorting the others next time. Then yesterday, I had discovered that I can use the Type 6 material for my Armitage again, which prompted me to log in at the break of dawn and discover this problem we've been dealing with.

Now, I have no idea whatsoever when 'next time' in-game is gonna be. And I'm pretty frakkin' peeved at being unable to rectify this problem.

So yeah, I'm feeling some pain, sadly. Yet, at least now I've got some whiskey to ease that pain a wee bit. Much rather go back to being a drunken Admiral though!:P

Something interesting that I just noticed: As of this writing, there have been 96 posts in this thread...and here's the important part...there have been 1698 views. I suspect that's fairly indicative of the fact that a whole lot more people have been suffering from this problem, than those who've been able to contribute to this discussion.

Really hate to throw a monkey wrench into this theory, but all of my STO files are located in my Steam folder. When I tried to download the game and run it separately, it was in C:\Program Files (x86)\Cryptic Studios and it still didn't work.

Hmmm...and this gets more and more intriguing! Yet, I should clarify that my pal, whose files are also located at 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Cryptic Studios', has never used Steam in conjunction with STO. Nor have I.

Yet, per your post Kirash1979, it seems as though Steam users have also been effected by this bug.

On my end, being at wits end, I took the liberty of calling my Internet Service Provider's, Road Runner's, Technical Support line, to see if they might be able to shed some light on this conundrum.

Apparently, as of this writing, they have no widespread reports of STO/Cryptic/PWE players, who are also Road Runner subscribers, having any issues.

The gal I spoke to was thankfully neither condescending nor presumptuous. She attentively heard my full description of this problem and every detail of my attempts to resolve it.

    Obviously, no resolution was found.

Pretty much think this, along with everything else in this thread, points to the ball being very firmly in your court PWEBranflakes!

Wowwwwwwwwww!!!! So, I finally just took that seemingly ultimate last step, on the form list of possible solutions that PWE Tech Support sent me. I completely and utterly uninstalled STO. And then reinstalled it. Took about an hour, maybe a little more, to do so.

    And guess what???!!!

Still dealing with the same frakkin' problem!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad:

Fix this nonsense already Dev people!!!!!!

I've been experincing this problem last 24 hours, seems like maybe cryptic need a better host server as sound slike its going offline/getting a bit ill. Other internet apps fine, I play through steam login and other steam apps a-ok.

Damned annoying, I've paid for a life subscription and stuck in money on top of that, maybe we should get some compensation for those of us who have paid money! At the very least an extra month stipend of ZEN for the inconvience.

Bannon3 Thanks for the support. Way I was looking at it though.

Is that its when companies have to PAYOUT money is when they do something about it.

If were unhappy with PWE service do they get audited by anyone we can complain to?

Dont think so, you could dig through the Internet and try to find out how to contact them by phone they must have a line running into the place. I have not been able to log in consistently since May, so some compensation would be nice but I dont see it happening. They didnt even throw us a bone when the server used to crash every Sunday night for 5 or 6 hours, no cpoint stipend for the trouble. The only thing keeping me hanging on right now is the attention by branflakes, I even sent support an email telling them in so many words because you haven't answered me since Wednesday you are admitting you know nothing of this problem and how to fix it so we are done then. Sigh

Sorry to say I also can not even start the launcher. I am a new player and this is the first tec fumble I have seen.
I am trying the game to see if it is truly worth spending some $$ on but unresolved tec issues make me loose faith.
And with no response or comment on the issue.
Logg in is step #1 guys. You must do better than this.

Okies...for starters...boys and girls, absolutely, positively NEVER troubleshoot PC problems whilst drunk!!!

Prior to finally succumbing to uninstalling and then reinstalling the game, I had tooled around with gods knows what (I seriously can't recall) and two of my desktop icons vanished. One of them was Explorer and I think the other one was MS Office-related. After a brief moment of panic, I performed a system restore, back to a point prior to my flub. Then that got me thinking...how's about going back to a restore point prior to the last time I was successfully able to log into STO? So, I rolled my system back to 8/7/2012.

    Made absolutely no difference whatsoever.

Eventually went back to a more recent restore point (night before last), then made sure everything was up to date. Then uninstalled and reinstalled.

    Still nothing.

I'm contemplating uninstalling and reinstalling STO once more. Yet, this time, I'm intent on changing the default locations of the game files. Not sure what difference that would make, given that the default/suggested location was exactly the location I had before all this mess started ( C:\Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios ).

Has anyone tried this already? Any thoughts on whether or not that might work?

Methos my friend, you are making alot of work for yourself. I dont think a reinstall will matter, I know you dont want to give up but for now I would forget STO and play something else until we hear something concrete. If it wasnt for Mass Effect 2 and 3 and all the replays you can do to affect the game turnout I would be lost. As it is, I have that, and some great Steam summer sale games lined up and GW 2 when it launches cuz I dont think Trek is going to be a viable alternative in the future, I hope I am proven wrong. One thing though, if you have the disc version of the game try instaling from that because it opens the old launcher which then will update with the new one, if it stays open you might possibly be able to log into the game when its done then just leave the game running until the patcher issue is resolved.
