Oh they can buy the game just fine on their own.

But you are are offering them in game money so they will buy it so it benefits you.

Actually no, I believe the in-game credits are being offered in exchange for simply using the referral code.

doesnt mean they will stay with the game, unless they choose to.

would you stick with a game and pay a purchase price and subscription fee for a game you dislike, merely because someone offers you credits which are only good in that game? No.

    ______

    look at it this way:

Cryptic sells the game and sub, new player pays the real money to Cryptic.

referral codes are being given away free AND so are the credits in-game. No one gets money for this transaction. One person may or may not recieve an in-game item (which also has no real value at this point since it is not currently in the C-Store with a listed price.)
    ______

    Also:
It will probably take more than 5 people to do this, since it is not likely all of the first 5 will stick with the game ( :( sad panda ). unless people do it themselves, buy 5 subs and 5 months playtime. (which I am sure some will.)

anyway, those are my thoughts on the subject.

If you're enjoying the free STO Demo and plan on purchasing the game, get started the right way. Use my referral key and get $1Million in-game energy credits!

I will give you 500,000 once the key is activated and the game is purchased, and 500,000 more in one month after the first subscription payment is made.

Get any ship you want, deck it out with top notch weapons and equipment, and fill your crew with purple bridge officers. It's WIN WIN !

First come, first served. Please PM me if interested.

Bravo! Excellent troll!! Not only have you shown one of the HUGE problems with RaF, you've got people discussing it. Nicely done.

But no matter how you twist and turn it... Offering in game currency in the hopes of someone spending real money so they will get the AGT is still wrong.

People are offering in game money in the ho... see above.
So even if there hasn't been any money exchanged there has been an item exchange... kinda.

    Hyptechically(spelling is soooo last season).
You give a person 1 million EC to use the referral.
They then go and buy the game for real money.
    You gain an item.

Can see it now on ebay... Referrals sold at prices that would cover the cost of the game.

    Also:

And Chat is gonna buy an account just for the BO. Will buy the account as a present for either the bf(that doesnt want the game) or a friend(that currently cant play the game on his pc).

Buy 5 for the AGT... Eeew no. Hate that ship. Maybe buy 4 for the spite. :p

Correct well said my friend :) the Energy credits were not sold or traded with money, because the money they spent was in buying the game if ever they were interested, it did not go into the hands of the person who gave the buddy key, a fact i dont know why people complain about this blinded or fail to see or does not know whats the definition of trading ingame money with Real money. i dont know if others cant accept the truth and keep whinning like little kids...

dang cant u get it? lol

they used the money in buying the game not buying the Energy credit we gave... u understand english?

of course they had to use money to buy the game, why is there another way to get the game?

EULA States Trading real ingame money for money. how did that affect giving away money for letting them use the buddy keys? wheres the money?

i repeat the money they used is in buying the game when interested,

when they get the buddy code, did they pay us real money? and if ever they got interested the money they used in buying the game was it overpriced? just to pay the energy credits?

Chat i guess your complaint is that we get the perk

not about the trading ingame money for real money in which EULA prohibits, whatever u say my friend they wont spend even a penny for the energy credits.

the only money they spend is the game on the market being sold. thats all, ahm we can do math lol

lol am i wrong? that what i see i even checked the dictionary for what is trading, and the energy credits im giving away is not in exchange of money, only for them using my buddy key... what wrong there? Real money is not involved.

the only way Real money is involved is when they buy the game, and they did not pay excess, to pay the energy credits i gave...

did they pay for the energy credits im giving away?

Ok I tried to look the other way for as long as possible but I am going to comment to keep it from getting out of hand.

The TOS/EULA are very specific (while at the same time being vague, neat isn't it?). We do not allow account trading/sharing, and we do not allow selling in game merchandise for real money out of the game.

This particular issue is neither of those.

In this case the theoretical "referral" is some happy go lucky Star Trek fan who is looking to try out the STO demo. They are going to sign up anyway, nothing is going to stop them. Joseph001 is simply attempting to incentivize the use of his referral code with the promise of some in game money. He is not forceing them to purchase the game, and he is not asking for anything in return for the energy credits.

If you break down the parts.
Is using his referral code against the TOS? No.
Is giving someone 1 million energy credits against the TOS? No.

It would be the same moral ambiguity if you offered to purchase a copy of STO for your friend/family member/significant other under the stipulation that they try it for a month as your referral. Or if you offered to purchase a time card for them so they could activate their accounts and you could get the bonuses.

Now Cryptic's stance on this subject could change. If it does then I promise nobody will get infractions for this first wave. We will simply send you PMs saying to cut it out, you will, and we will all go on our merry ways. Until that time though I do not see a problem with people looking to get more people into our game.

Now if you don't mind there are brand new feds out there for me to devour.

    Thinking this over...

The issue isn't energy credits for money as the OP isn't getting money but energy credits exchanged for a real life service.

In turn, a real life service for a real life service would be totally legit but you arguably couldn't offer it on the forums. (Ie. you could buy someone else a game and a gamecard or offer to mow their lawn if they use the referral. But not advertise it here.)

Your best bet is simply to offer someone an in-game service. (Ie. I'll level with you. I'll be your in-game friend. I want to lead a fleet of new recruits and offer guidance.)

the problem is you're not giving them the ec for using your key your giving them the ec for buying the game and subscribing (real money) if they don't do that you get nothing. Unless you're willing to let someone use your key and even if they don't buy the game or subscribe you still give them the ec.

Kind of reminds me of a MMO special offer. Join now and get 1 million energy credits! Except this time Cryptic has turned it's own players into their advertisement tool. Kind of like drug pushers.

Question is, what will the new customers think when they find out the product has been mixed with too much baby powder?

    :D

So technically speaking... You are offering them in game credits for real money.
And that part is against the TOS, EULA or whatever they call it.

ahm that did i get the money? :P

Sorry, but that only applies to if the person in question gets the money. If you say to your friend "hey bud, come play STO with me and I"ll give you a bunch of money to get you going" that isnt against he rules, even though that also involves them spending RL money and you giving them in game credits.

It's already getting out of hand. Why not create a subforum for these to get them out of sight similar to what was done with an actual valid discussion on the subject that had 25,000 + views? Not too surprising to see these left run for the weekend (Wow! An actual moderator on the weekend! Will wonders never cease!) This is beyond ridiculous.

But it feels like a very gray area. Offering in game currency in the hopes of getting an item with an actual value attached to it.
    More like gambling perhaps.

Which is all Chat has been saying.
