Afraid that, to a non-tech type like me, this 'binding' business may as well be written in hyrogliphics. Can't figure it out at all despite having tried everything the posted instructions say. I brought a wireless xbox controller for this game and now can't use it.
Not sure if anyone else here is encountering this, but thought I'd ask - I used the keybind guide from the OP to set up space controls with RTrigger assigned to Fire All Phasers/Cannons/Turrets and LTrigger to Fire All Torpedoes. Works very well for the most part but annoyingly, if I'm in the vicinity of an object that can be interacted with, double-tapping the torpedo trigger (as I often do since I'm not always in the fire arc when I first try) seems to trip the "Interact" setting. This occasionally gets as far as pulling up the "Take Items" dialog box which blocks my POV. Wouldn't be an issue if there were so many anomalies right where fights take place... any ideas how to stop this?
not being rude or anything, but this might be ok for people that can follow these type of instructions. Some are a visual learner like me Need a video with step by step instructions to be able to do it with no problems.
Better still, cryptic and PWE need to implement a better setup where everything is already in place, all we have to do is assign the buttons we want to use. sort of like a PS3 game, where the controlls are already setup, but you choose the setup thats better for your play style.
I see lots of binds for ship controls but almost none for ground. What is the command for the manual aim? And crouch? If possible I would like a list of actions and commands so I can map my controller to my gaming style. Over all this thread has been a lot of help. My ship battles are less frantic key hunting and more actual ship hunting.
But a list of commands that can be bound for ground and ship would be nice. This way I can finish my controller map.
hmm not a fan of a controller to play computer games like this, racing games yes, this not so much.. none the least it good for the players who do use an controller! great job
i must ask playing with a controller you do that in RPG mode or FPS Mode ?
I downloaded an app called Xpadder (costs 5 or 10 bucks, I forget) to set up my gamepad, it let's you bind whatever you want, including mouse controls, to your gamepad.
The process was painstakingly tedious, but eventually I arrived at a set-up that works for me. For ground I can literally do everything with the gamepad (I always plat in shooter mode). In space there are a few things I usually have to point and click, but I can fly, shoot, move the camera, switch targets, distribute power to shield facings, use all my BOFF powers and some of my captain powers without having to do so. I do have to manually click on devices, powers such as go down fighting, and to activate multi-vector modes on my escort.
If you, like me, are not used to playing games on mouse and keyboard, it is totally worth it. All depends on your playstyle, but I think customizing the interface to suit your strengths pays off in the end.

I don't have time to put it all in, but for example: I crouch by clicking the left stick, toggle shooter mode by pressing down on the d-pad, and enter "zoomed-in shooter mode" with a click of the right stick. The R1 and L1 buttons are R and L mouseclicks, repectively, so I shoot with those. I basically have directions on the d-pad (up, dwn, etc.) as they are, and each corner has a number. Numbers 5,6, and 7 I bind to "select, start, and L2" respectively, and R2 is spacebar. One of the face buttons is Alt, so with those number plus Alt variants I can map in everything.
I should stress that I came up with this on my own, it has nothing to do with the binds described at the start of this post. But in the end, I set up everything just as I want it, and it works pretty well. I use an app called Xpadder to map mouse functions and various keys to my gamepad, so as far as STO is concerned I AM using good old mouse and keyboard.
I am trying to use the 360 controller, but have been having trouble.
I can map out commands to the D-Pad, and Left Stick, but that is it. I cannot map anything to the A,B,X,Y buttons, or Left/Right Shoulder buttons, or L/R Trigger. Also, the Right Stick cannot be mapped.
I have tried to switch from game pad to 360 game pad, but nothing. I have tried to do the key binds in the chat screen like some post have said, but I have trouble keeping up with what button does what. And I can't figure out what command matches what phrase to put in for the button I want. (Not to mention that I don't know what button is what number on my controller. Is Y joystick number 1 or 12?
I don't need everything mapped to the controller. Heck, I can't keep up with what I eat some days. Trying to figure out what button pressed with what other button does I don't how how many other things is beyond me.
All I want is this:
SPACE CONTROLS
Left on left stick = turn left.
Right on left stick = turn right.
Up moves the ship nose down, and down moves the nose up.
Click left stick = Target next enemy.
The right stick movements always pans the camera.
Click right stick = maximum impulse.
D-Pad up = shields forward.
D-Pad down = shields aft.
D-Pad left = shields port (left side).
D-Pad right = shields starboard
Left shoulder button = increase impulse speed
Right shoulder button = decrease impulse speed
Left trigger = fire all phases
Right trigger = fire phases and torpedoes.
A button = Interact
X button = crew member 1 powers
Y button = crew member 2 powers
B button = crew member 3 powers
GROUND CONTROLS
Left stick up = forward
Down = back
Left = strafe left
Right = strafe right
Click = toggle run
Right stick up = look up
Down = look down
Left = turn left
Right = turn right.
Click = crouch.
D-Pad up = target friend 1
D-Pad left = target friend 2
D-Pad down = target friend 3
D-Pad right = target friend 4
A = Interact
Y = switch weapons
X = m?l?e attack
B = target exposed
Left trigger = fire main weapon
Right trigger = secondary feature
Left shoulder button = skill 1
Right shoulder button = skill 2
The start always goes to game menu, and back always goes to map.
I don't have to have everything set to the controller. I will have the keyboard with me. I just need enough to not have to use the mouse at all during battle. I am fine with using it between battle, and having to hit the number pad to activate skills.
Any help would appreciated. I have been trying to map these things out, and have done nothing but messed things up. I don't have the slightest clue how to properly enter in commands in the chat window, and the 360 controller options in the key binds menu of the game are very limited, and restricting.
Thanks for any assistance,
Tim.

I personally use a program called X-padder, it lets me remap my controllers to do anything i need them too, and it's quite handy, granted i have it set up considerably different that you do. My suggestion would be to download it, set two profiles for STO, one for ground, one for space, and a hot key on the controller to switch between the two profiles. One profile might be possible but it would require you to remap most of the games controls and most of which (like the D-pad) would overlap, so switching over to the other profile with a single button would probably be easier.

Pinnacle game profiler is actually better than X-padder. With Pinnacle you don't have to set multiple profiles for space, ground, etc as it will automatically switch what you've set based on space or ground.
I have tried both, but can't understand what to put in to remap the controller for my needs. I am REALLY STUPID when it comes to understanding this stuff. I just figured out how to type the commands into the chat screen to get the ship to do something. And I have been working on that for two days.
I am going to use what I have found to try to map it in the game itself. If it doesn't work, I will just play how they have the KB and mouse set up. If I die, I don't get a penalty, so I don't mind if I die all the time. I just won't play with others so I don't ruin their game.
Besides, I don't have a headset, so playing with others will be hard enough with how slow I type.
Thanks for all the help. I am just excited to be able to play the game. I have wanted to since before the game came out.

Guys, it's much simpler to just use xPadder or a similar program opposed to mapping it the way they make you. I'm not sure why they even have the option for the 360 controller when they don't give you option to bind the keys they way they do with the joystick. And the way it is bound is ridiculous.

Hi... I'm maybe having a little problem here, not with the Hydra itself but clearly related.
I found that my Xbox 360 wireless controller no longer works with some of the games that are on the supported Hydra games list, I tried with Bulletstorm, Mirror's Edge and Assassins Creed Brotherhood, they only works with KB&M and the Hydra.
Oddly; The Witcher 2 and Crysis 2 seems to work well with the controller.
I "unticked" those games from the list and the problem persists.
It is possible that the Hydra drivers are somehow overriding the Xbox 360 wireless controller?
An update of the keybind threads from Open Beta (original sources used are here and here)
Thanks to all the original posters!
The available buttons on the Xbox Controller are:
Joy1 = Start
Joy2 = Back
Joy3 / Lstick = Left thumb depress
Joy4 / Rstick = Right thumb depress
Joy5 / LB = Left Bumper
Joy6 / RB = Right Bumper
Joy7 / Ltrigger = Left Trigger
Joy8 / Rtrigger = Right Trigger
Joy9 / Ab = A Button
Joy10 / Bb = B Button
Joy11 / Xb = X Button
Joy12 / Yb = Y Button
Lstick_(up/down/left/right)
Rstick_(up/down/left/right)
Joypad_(up/down/left/right)
The one little thing I'm having trouble with, for this little xbox translation is, that when I try to bind anything with the "Back" button, which according to you is Joy2, nothing happens. I can bind what I want to any other button code like Lstick, or Rstick, or even Start, but Back does nothing. I'll post my bind command below to show you that I'm not typing anything in wrong. Can anyone else find out what the proper "code," "Syntax," or simply put, "name" for the button is so I don't have to go through the trouble of remapping the buttons to compensate?
Here's the syntax I'm using: /bind Back GenSendMessage HUD_Root FireTorps
*Edit*
I went on a hunch and instead of using the word "Back" I used "Select" and it worked! Just to let others know... supposing the same problem existed for them.
I painstakingly went through all the key bindings for the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, and came up with a "translation" for the controller binds. They are not in order of the list at the beginning of page 1 of this thread or in my quote of it in my prior post.
Leaving them AS DEFAULT, here's what the button assignments REALLY are, in joystick button numerical order: (( though I'm beginning to think it's like this for almost all sticks ))
Button 01 = Ab
Button 02 = Bb
Button 03 = Xb
Button 04 = Yb
Button 05 = Lb
Button 06 = Rb
Button 07 = Ltrigger
Button 08 = Rtrigger
Button 09 = Select (( in game, it would be the "cancel button" ))
Button 10 = Start (( in game, it would be the "accept button" ))
Button 11 = Lstick
Button 12 = Rstick
For the view switch nob... perfect for routing power to individual shields I think
Dpad up = Joypad_up
Dpad down = Joypad_down
Dpad left = Joypad_left
Dpad right = Joypad_right.
Simple binding command for those who don't quite know what to do... open your chat window to local or zone, then open your options window and go to key binds. Hover your mouse over the function you want, like, Fire All Phasers, you should see a tool tip appear under you cursor, that says "Use manually with /FirePhasers" To bind that to say... button 1... type into the chat window:
/bind Ab FirePhasers
and for forward shields:
/bind Joypad_up +power_exec Reroute_Shields_Forward
No need for the / to go before the name of the function like in the tool tip bubble. Just repeat the process for each desired function until you have the config you want.
Have to say I'm feeling very confused by the way STO handles controls. Basically, this is what happens:
I plug in Xbox 360 controller(Or alternatively, my PS3 controller with software that makes it emulate Xbox 360 controller). Then I make sure my PC recognizes it. I check every button, thumbstick etc is working properly on control panel. Then I start STO. In STO Options/Controllers, I make sure " Joystick" is DEactivated and " Xbox pads" is active. With this set up, buttons of the pad seem to work in log in screen. Thumb sticks work perfectly in-game&in space. However, once IN GAME every single button of the pad remains dead. I can't rebind anything in options. If they have any default binds at all, none of them is working for me. Problem is identical for both Xbox controller and PS3 controller emulating Xbox controller.
If I disable the emulator of my PS3 controller and simply use it as a Joystick, problem is identical. Thumbsticks work great, none of the buttons respond.
AArgh.
Is this normal? What am I supposed to do? This is first time I'm facing any compatibility issues with either of my pads in any game I've ever tried playing with either.
Thanks in advance

It's complicated but it was worth it. The most important part to remember is that to make binds I had to find the logical device name that STO uses for controller function that the buttons are mapped to in the controller configs area. Like I said, it's complicated. But it CAN be done!
hey all, after trying numerous keybinds others have posted then configuring and tweaking my own setup, I have concocted what I feel is an intuitive, easy to remember configuration for anyone that wants to play with an xbox controller. Beware, once you try this config you will never want to return to keyboard and mouse again! :cool:

Additional Notes:
- Joystick thumb buttons are left default with left being for movement and right for camera orientation.
- If you're a healer type person you can swap around team targeting with shield distribution or power distribution if you don't use these too often.
- I suggest using autofire till target change so you can quickly clear target if need be using both left trigger and bumper buttons.
- You can use depart system button to leave a lot of areas that may normally require mouse clicking. This includes when missions are completed.
- I don't recommend enabling targeting off screen. I tried this and it made tab targeting a nightmare. It is a lot easier to pan the camera with joystick to targets you want to cycle.
- I find I rarely use the camera zoom buttons so they're good candidates for mapping additional buttons or macros providing you with another 3 buttons for mapping.
- With this config you should rarely need to use keyboard and mouse. Only times keyboard and mouse needed would be when typing messages, managing inventory or managing doffs/reputation or other window related stuff. Also there is a mini-interaction window that can only be interacted with mouse clicking which can occasionally annoy you (if anyone knows the command to navigate to this window it would be greatly appreciated, typical interact button doesnt work for this). Everything else that is commonly used is bound to the controller.
- By default the dpad is configured for navigating interaction window text choices, A button accepts and B button cancels. This is only valid when you have an interaction window on screen that you have opened using interactwindow button.
- To use this config just copy paste quoted text into a text file and follow instructions on wiki on how to load keybinds. Lines with // won't break anything.
I kept Ground Keybinds very similar to the Space ones. This should make the controls feel familiar when switching between space and ground. There are very slight differences.

Additional Notes:
- As mentioned before, very similar to space buttons with slight variances, a fair amount of spare buttons remaining on directional pad so feel free to swap team targeting to dpad buttons if you are a healer.
- I'm inclined to swap places of crouch and roll backwards since i barely use roll backwards but crouch is used incessantly.
- Don't forget to enable autofire until change target. I tried using autofire until out of combat but I felt more control with autofire until change target. Feel free to try both and see which works best for you.
- If you want to clear target for your followers because they're attacking something 100m away deselect your current target then press attack my target button again (not the fire button which will auto-target enemies and tell followers to attack again), this will clear the autoattack command.
- As with space I found target off screen to be a troublesome option so I don't suggest enabling this.
- As with space the dpad is used to navigate interactwindows and A for accept B for cancel. In addition X yells out for help when you're unconscious if you like yelling help :cool:
- As with space almost all commonly used buttons are bound to controller so you shouldn't need to use keyboard mouse unless typing, navigating windows or because you cannot "beam me up", yes I'm looking at you academy instance... again if anyone knows the bind command to interact with this window it would be greatly appreciated.
- I tried experimenting with target exposed command but could never get this to work properly so I gave up on it.
- To use this config just copy paste quoted text into a text file and follow instructions on wiki on how to load keybinds. Lines with // won't break anything.

I hope you enjoy these keybinds. I have been tweaking these settings continously for over a month but if you have any suggestions for improvements please feel free to comment!
Major storm this is the pinnacle of excellence of easy xbox 360 controller keybinds... takes about an hour to get used to and keeping this link open and reading the // lines to tell you what stuff does and how it works is fricken easy way to learn, i played this game for TWO years darn near, and always have been trying to find a 360 controller set up as easy as your description here, all you need to do is read his thread as you go. like an old gaming manual.
I know there might be different ways to do this, but i want to say people who come across here, this really works wonders for PVP if yer used o responding as fast as this allows you too.
Many thanks amigo, this keeps me in the game for years to come cause now i can kick back and watch TV and not pay attention to what i am doing in game and still get STFS and pretty much everything else done, the proper super HIGH dps way.
For us old guys, Remember when you played mortal combat and were like zoned out and could beat the TRIBBLE out of yer buddy cause the key combos were so easy, not even paying attention to what you were doing?

A friend of mine is having some issues using his Xbox 360 wireless. any suggestions out there?
1)plug and play not detecting it; the green light on controler just blinks
2) tried switching ports , no joy
3) tried the unplug and take batteries out for 10 seconds, no joy.
Now for the record he is usinig it as a "wired" controler. Any help would be much appreciated.
does he have the wireless adapter for the controller plugged in?
Got a good deal on a wireless one on Ebay though - seems a shame to have to purchase another. But this binding business is simply beyond me.
Nothing really - just saying I can't figure it out, despite numerous attempts.
Better still, cryptic and PWE need to implement a better setup where everything is already in place, all we have to do is assign the buttons we want to use. sort of like a PS3 game, where the controlls are already setup, but you choose the setup thats better for your play style.
example :
for logitech controllers
button 1 jump
button 2 crouch
button 3 run
button 4 swap weapons
button 5 aim
button 6 shoot
similar thing for xbox controllers.
i have both a xbox and logitech controllers but i am having serious issues on tryin to setup key binds on both. Not easy in my book
But a list of commands that can be bound for ground and ship would be nice. This way I can finish my controller map.
(I can hear myself now)
i must ask playing with a controller you do that in RPG mode or FPS Mode ?
Down = back
Left = strafe left
Right = strafe right
Click = toggle run
Right stick up = look up
Down = look down
Left = turn left
Right = turn right.
Click = crouch.
D-Pad up = target friend 1
D-Pad left = target friend 2
D-Pad down = target friend 3
D-Pad right = target friend 4
A = Interact
Y = switch weapons
X = m?l?e attack
B = target exposed
Thanks for any assistance,
Tim.
Pinnacle game profiler is actually better than X-padder. With Pinnacle you don't have to set multiple profiles for space, ground, etc as it will automatically switch what you've set based on space or ground.
Tim.
I have tried pinnacle, is xpadder any better?
I found that my Xbox 360 wireless controller no longer works with some of the games that are on the supported Hydra games list, I tried with Bulletstorm, Mirror's Edge and Assassins Creed Brotherhood, they only works with KB&M and the Hydra.
Oddly; The Witcher 2 and Crysis 2 seems to work well with the controller.
I "unticked" those games from the list and the problem persists.
It is possible that the Hydra drivers are somehow overriding the Xbox 360 wireless controller?
If that's the case: Is there any way to fix it?

As completely unrelated sidenote, some over zealous community mod seems to be going around locking threads about this due to " Internet nercomancy" Unsure if non-solved technical isssues can get obsolete. In case you are reading this, your actions ensured top search results on the matter Google provides remain unsolved forever. GJ I guess.
It's complicated but it was worth it. The most important part to remember is that to make binds I had to find the logical device name that STO uses for controller function that the buttons are mapped to in the controller configs area. Like I said, it's complicated. But it CAN be done!
My character Tsin'xing
